Yoshitomo is a FANTAASTIC eatery in the Omaha area that I'd recommend to locals, tourists, or anyone just passing through looking for one of the best places to eat in Omaha. We've dined there a few times, and each and every time. They have hit it out of the park in terms of quality, service, and ambiance. The interior is not too fussy or fancy, so don't come here in your Sunday's best if you don't want to. They focus on the food way more than the pomp and circumstance. Now that's not to say your meal will not be top notch. The chef and owner has been nominated (and been a semifinalist) for a James Beard award. The restaurant or chef will win one someday, for sure. Is it an inexpensive place to eat all the time? Not so much - but they do have a happy hour most days during normal happy hour times, and then all day on Sunday. So if you're price shy to try it for the first time, go during one of these happy hour times and try a few tings to get your feet wet before going back for the full experience. Onto the food I keep hyping up! We have always done the a la carte menu so we can choose a few things. But one of these days we will go to try the omakase and let the chef's vision be our menu. Hama Toast is one of our faves. Yellowtail tuna and brown butter on a nice piece of sourdough. It literally melts in your mouth! The Aburi Wagyu is another go-to, topped with uni butter and a nice soy. Another delicate plate of a few bites that will feel filling, but actually be very light. We also love the Osaka roll, which has shrimp tempura, crab flakes, and kewpie mayo - yum! And the last smaller plate we love is the Abura Miso, which is tender pork belly wrapped in nori, atop a miso paste for a full flavor explosion in just a few bites. Even their Caesar salad is impressive. Perfectly dressed and gigantic - it could be a meal in itself, if you're looking for something lighter when you visit, and like salads as your entree. For our entrees though, two of our favorites have been the Kani Miso (super delicious snow crab and roe over a flavorful sushi rice) and the KC Kama, which is a perfectly smoked yellowtail basted in BBQ, over a dill cream with potato salad (which doesn't sound like it would all work together but it DOES). These are just our favorites that we return to again and again between all the different things we've tried - but you can't go wrong with ANYTHING at Yoshitomo. With the awesome food, very cool/minamilist ambiance, and great service to boot, you will have a great experience - I guarantee it!

Two days later of craving more, I must add a few newbies for me. Darcy & Kelly were great! Fukui Vodka Cucumber Drink 5 Star so refreshing! I had two! Sakeviche 5 Star - the Tonburi or Caviar of the land is a must for my pantry now. Loved Darcy's recommendation on this! Khaleesi 2/5 - I thought the sundried tomato would be more sweet, but it was more of a paste & have me immediate heartburn. Megami 5 Star & a total palette cleanser to me! I'd order this first to eat between bites & entrees. It was fresh & wonderful! Kobayashi Maru 2/5 - very plain, nothing really standout for me. I also ordered my favs from last time & know next time what to start with & try the rest of the magnificent menu. For the experience, I did the cereal milk & dole pineapple ice cream. Very cute accompaniments. Side point, they have to get the reservations for sushi bar situated or have the bar be a first come, first serve missing out on customers due to no-show bookings just FYI.

Enjoyed a date night here. This is a gem for Omaha with incredible options to choose from. The parking lot was busy, but inside it was a pleasant, dim setting with few people while we were there. My favorite was the wagu with rice. For something that appeared so simple it had great flavor. All of the sushi we tried was well made and tasty, but for the price I think we have some other pretty great sushi places in Omaha. I definitely recommend trying some of the more unique dishes. The service was exceptional. This is a great spot if you are looking to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion.

We were able to snag a reservation at Yoshitomo while in Omaha. We sat at the sushi bar, which was so fun! We don't eat a lot of Asian food and aren't super familiar with the flavors, but we aren't picky eaters, so we followed our server's recommendations, which were spot on. Everything we ate was delicious, service was perfect. Definitely my favorite stop in Omaha. Highly recommend stopping by!

Second time here and even better than the first which was hard to beat. Honestly the best sushi we have ever had and the presentation is amazing as well. Some of the standouts were the uni egg, baraniku, sb&j ,kobayashi maru, yellowtail and striped jack nigiri.

A wonderful experience. The ingredients are impeccably fresh and the dishes are well-developed with a traditional Japanese base and Chef Yoshitomo's unique twist that surprises and delights while still lifting up the seafood as the star of the show. I had the oni egg (deviled egg), kaki (oysters), hama toast (yellowtail), foienagi (smoked eel), sakeviche (salmon), megami (vegetarian), shima aji (striped jack, dry-aged in house), and uni (urchin, flown in weekly from Hokkaido). The deviled egg with Japanese spices and fish roe I can only imagine was a respectful nod to the Midwest--served on potato salad, no less. It was a delightful beginning that set the scene for the surprises to come. The oysters were next, speckled with a bright green dill and green apple mignonette that I could have eaten with a spoon, and carefully-placed melt-in-your-mouth dashi gelee that created the perfect sweet, sour, salty, umami, and texturally pleasing bite four times in a row. Next was sweet and buttery yellowtail served not on rice, but on a cube of toasted sourdough doused with a tamari brown butter that turned the umami up to 11. Then the foienagi, a pairing of foie gras and smoked eel with a cherry pickled in Japanese fashion on top uniting the two salty, rich stars with a sweet and tangy accent. I could go on and on, but it's best to just go and eat everything yourself. If you enjoy seafood and excellent cooking, you will leave happy. For all of this, a carafe of sake, dessert, and tip, I was in for $207-well worth the price, in my opinion. In addition to the food, the dining room is intimate and minimalist with a nod to Japanese aesthetics. Staff were knowledgeable, service was quick, and everyone was warm and welcoming. Omaha, Nebraska has something special.

Wow! We are so lucky to have this gem of a restaurant in Omaha! We love the bar seating to see the sushi chefs working to make each dish a delight! The staff is attentive and welcoming. Beyond the presentation is the flavor of each dish - it's like a Japanese flavor safari. The quality of the fish is beyond comparison - the color, texture and flavor is something to experience. I learned they dry age 75% of the fish to optimize the texture (you can see the coolers in the front). They also make all their wasabi fresh. Looking forward to making another visit soon!

Best sushi in Nebraska. I was recommended this spot by a local and it did not miss anywhere. Great service. Great ambiance. Great food. Food comes out as it's ready, so everything is fresh.

Yoshitomo remains my top sushi spot in Omaha. It never fails to impress! We sat at the bar this time to see some prep in action. The chefs have their process perfected, and it made dinner more interesting. The food of course was top notch. The fish was the best quality and the new dishes on the menu were delicious. Favorites remain Hama toast and wagyu beef nigiri. Anything with scallops is always my favorite as well. It was crowded on a weekday but service was still excellent. This remains a chill spot for a date night or small intimate group dinner.

An amazing place, great service, delicious food, and a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a date. My girlfriend was very happy, and the experience was excellent.

I think if I reviewed everything away then this review would be way too long to write. We were celebrating and decided to head to Yoshitomo. We made a reservation on their website since it was a weekend which was really easy to do and the hostess sat us right away. We started with some wine and they had an impressive selection of well curated wines. No mass produce labels on this menu. The prices were also reasonable for dine-in. We started with the Oni egg and some edamame. You might think that an egg sounds so simple but the amount of effort and care that it takes to make this one egg dish is so impressive and it's worth every penny. Imagine eating a devil egg but that deviled egg was crafted by an angel in heaven and sent down to you on a little floating cloud. That good. Another highlight was the Hama toast. My husband is a sourdough connoisseur, and he was impressed by the sourdough pieces that came under this really light and tender piece of yellowtail. Then we got a bunch of rolls for the table, and every single role was completely different and unique in its own way! My favorite was probably the Simba, which was slightly smoky from the salmon, but had a good crunch in it from the crab and cucumber. The most interesting role we got was the rodeo which tasted exactly like a hamburger but in a sushi roll form. So unique and fun! Throughout the night, our server was incredible. She was really attentive and made really great recommendations. When she wasn't serving us directly, there were a number of other staff checking in on us bringing us our food bringing us our water, and it felt like you were really taking care of. We can't wait to head back to yoshitomo soon!

Abura Miso
Jeffrey L.

A visit on Christmas Eve. Always great service. Sushi chef recognized me and checked on my service. Plates: Saigon makimono and Abura Miso. My favourite was the Abura Miso. Also known as andansu in Okinawan, is a savory, slightly sweet, and versatile Okinawan condiment made by simmering miso paste with pork belly and seasonings. I highly recommend.. also a nice meal on occasion. Beer is too expensive :(

(although I think the fish is cured to retain freshness) We ordered a couple rolls, but mostly stuck to the nigiri. The Hama toast, prairie tuna, and yaki gindara were all ono. The yaki gindara tasted like butterfish sushi, but with sablefish rather than black cod. Also, the rice used for the sushi tasted similar to the rice used in sushi in Hawaii. We also tried some of the yakitori - grilled meat on sticks. I strongly recommend the tako yakitori. I'm not really into tako poke (Hawaii dish), but this tako with that miso panca sauce is super ono. Full of flavor with a touch of spicy. I could eat that all the time. The five-spice old fashioned they have is also delicious. Service was excellent for us. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself has a/c and gives an izakaya vibe familiar in Hawaii. Also, I saw people come in with t-shirt and shorts for dinner. So I guess there isn't really a dress code here. As others have mentioned, Koji is a sister restaurant to Yoshitomo, and the menus of both restaurants do overlap to a degree. However, Koji has MUCH better parking than Yoshitomo. Trying to find parking for Yoshitomo or Ota can be a pain since it's all street parking. Koji is in a strip mall with its own parking lot (free parking too). I will definitely return here whenever I'm in Omaha.

But there is a James Beard-level recognized chef here, in Omaha, that is delivering fresh-tasting raw and other omakase dishes week after week - geography be damned. His name is David Utterback. It's incredibly difficult to get reservations at this eight-seat omakase called Ota. Moreso than any omakase in my hometown on an island in the middle of the Pacific. In fact, I dont think he needs this review - the best don't need to advertise. I also don't think we have a sushi chef here in Hawaii that is as nationally-acclaimed as Utterback. So we were very interested to try. And we were very lucky to get reservations. I dont think there is a parking lot for this restaurant, which is tucked within his also highly-regarded Yoshitomo restaurant. So if you from Hawaii like me, and get lucky with the reservations, gotta roll da dice on parallel street parking. That's code for come early ;) (parking is free in the area) W-h-e-n you do arrive at Yoshitomo, there is a small - hidden - waiting area within Yoshitomo where you will be asked to wait for the omakase to begin. The dark photo with the lantern and Ota sign is in that waiting room. - And frankly - That's all that needs to be shown in a photo cause the omakase course itself varies depending on chef's tastes and what's available that week. The courses we had will likely not be the entirety of the courses you have. But the rice might be the same. There is a special black vinegar that chef uses to add to the rice. Ask him about it. There is a whole story behind it ;) So my photos are small in number. They are the highlights of our experience and what stood out to me that is beyond anything I've tried in Hawaii or elsewhere (including the black-vinegar sushi rice) Enjoy - cause we most certainly did :)
