Oh the memories that this restaurant brought back to me. We lived in Japan for five years, and conveyor belt sushi was one of our go to restaurants. I was so excited to read that we had one local, so we had to try it out. We went for a late lunch so there was not a whole lot going around on the conveyor belt. We were fine grabbing what was available and did not order from the menu. The guy that seated us and answered our questions and was very nice. Our seating area was clean as well as the restrooms. The few plates of sushi that I grabbed were pretty tasty, but I will definitely try a variety of stuff next time either from the menu. My wife picked this place because our son wanted sushi and it was near the area we were. We lived in Japan for five years so conveyor belt sushi is something that we live for. Decent amount of sushi to choose from, but maybe because it was later in the afternoon for lunch there wasn't a lot of options to grab. I was hoping for a bit more variety, but what they had was decent enough. The three of us ate closer to 20 plates which surprisingly was less than 80 bucks. Context is important - this place is in Omaha. Anyway, the conveyor belt concept is cool, I like it quite a bit. This place has it but the food was mid. Mind you, quality was fine and no one got ill. But I've had better at similar in other cities. The plates that went by seemed... phoned in. There was an oyster dish that should've been removed at least an hour ago: you could clearly see the liquid drying at the edges quite a bit. All the plates that we tried were fine. Second time headed to Yamato and it was just as fun as I remember it! Such an awesome idea for a sushi train! I've been to a couple different trains and I'm always so excited! We had a mixture of rolls, apps, and desserts. We never grabbed anything we didn't like but you won't always have many options. It's up to the chefs on the variety. However, you can order directly from their menu which is very safe for folks who do not like sushi. It's fun but just know you will have some wait time before you find something new on the train! I went on a Sunday, about an hour after they opened. It was very quiet. I was seated in front of where the sushi was being prepared. At first there wasn't much going around, but as more diners arrived the selection increased. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The restaurant itself was clean and comfortable. I have dined here 3 times. The restaurant is clean, modern and entertaining. Even kids love it. Service is prompt and with a continuous fresh sushi train there is no wait if one wants to just "dig in" before receiving custom choices. The food wis ell prepared and the m, menu is the right size and encompasses traditional choices prepared very deliciously. The Sushi is reasonably priced and the variety of noodle dishes and elegant desserts, not usually offered in asian restaurants rounds it out. read more

My friend and I decided to give Yamato a try, since we had never been to a sushi belt/train and this is the only one available in the area. When we walked in we got to choose where we sat since there wasn't very many people in. There was options to sit at tables with a few people or by yourself right up against the belt. So options for those just grabbing a quick lunch during work hours. The waitress was amazing and walked us through the ordering menu. There was rotating sushi on the belt, but you could also special order sushi, appetizers, etc. on the iPad that was then delivered to you on a cute train. The sushi on the belt was cool, but was just ok. It seemed like it had been sitting for a while, and there were only a handful of options that were rotating around. The belt never seemed to be "restocked" or checked on in the hour that we were there which was slightly disappointing. The special order stuff was a slightly better quality since it was freshly made, but overall still ok. If you're wanting a quick, fun sushi experience this may be the place for you. But if you're looking for higher quality sushi, there are better options in Omaha. I may give this another try in the future to see if maybe it was just an off day! Let's start with the staff.... I feel she was friendly; when she was around... she was dang near nowhere to be found majority of the time my friends and I were there (about an hour and a half) The food was just ok, I came pretty early around 11:15 am so there wasn't very many options available when I arrived, still even after as long as I was there the options very slowly increased. I did however enjoy the crab rangoons. The price is pretty cheap but can rack up pretty quickly. Plates go from 3 bucks to 7 as well as a menu you can order from. I enjoyed the experience so I would recommend giving this place a try, hopefully when you do they'll have more options (I recommend maybe going later than I did) Overall I give this place a 6/10. They have the right idea, it's unique and a different experience from any place I've been, if they would just work on the service I'd definitely give this place another shot. read more

So, I've thought long and hard about how I wanted to review this place. I rarely leave negative reviews and that's because I generally try to take into account as much as I can, and under certain circumstances giving the restaurant an opportunity to try again. My family and I went here a couple weeks ago to celebrate. Some of us love sushi but trying different types is sometimes difficult and not cost-effective. I also thought the sushi train (conveyor belt) was an awesome idea and I was excited to see it in action. We arrived after dinner hour (probably around 7 or so). There was a lot of open seating, but no large tables so we were asked to sit on the edge (long table bar-style seating which was right by the sushi making station (which is not viewable from the restaurant or these seats). "This is great", I thought. But that is pretty much where the optimism ended - there were a few high notes but many things that left more to be desired. Let me get to those details now. Food Quality: This was one of our greatest concerns about this place. The food was tasty, but we noticed one BIG RED FLAG about the foods on the conveyor as we sat there. It appeared that nobody was monitoring the length of time that items stayed on the conveyor. We noticed this on multiple occasions. One of the items had the orange sauce ("special sauce", maybe), but we noticed that a couple plates that were back to back on the belt were *different colors*, meaning that it had been exposed to air and had been so for a while (as it changed from a bright orange to a burnt orange). On another occasion, I noticed that one item was not being grabbed and one of the plates had a chip/mark so I took note of that plate as it came around - it was on the belt for over 30 minutes. Having worked in fast food and taking food safety courses, food is not safe to consume the longer it sits at room temperature. There were hot and cold items on the belt, so it wasn't temperature controlled. It solely depended on people taking the items, but if they weren't, it just kept rolling around. I'm not sure if it was someone's job to monitor this, but I didn't feel comfortable that it was being done that night and that was my wife's and my greatest concern about this place. Service: There were at least two servers there when we got in. Our server came to get our drink orders, explain the process, and once to ask if we wanted to order anything. (Side note: In addition to the sushi train, you can order items off the menu in different portions or to try things that wouldn't be on the train for some reason or another). After that, our server never returned until it was time for the bill (probably 45-60 minutes). At one time, we did want to order a few items, and I had to walk to the register, wait for her to look up from her phone, and place an order with the inattentive staff member. Service was not very good on this particular evening. Food Selection: The conveyer had a variety of items on it and I was impressed with the selection, including dumplings, fried items, vegetarian salads, a few traditional sushi items, drinks, fruits, cakes and desserts, plus some more unique options like mini octopus. However, in our party of six, three of them aren't huge sushi fans and traditional seafood-free options would have been nice but just weren't featured heavily on the conveyer belt. My 9-year old had only chosen chocolate cake and Ramune, 15 minutes in (the belt goes constantly). Similarly, two of them aren't extremely adventurous with regards to raw seafood. But a lot of the items contained raw seafood. I placed a special order for rolls with peanuts and another with cream cheese. There just wasn't a lot available for non-adventurous types and that was disappointing, especially if you are trying to bring young kids. The other thing to mention was that our "great" seats by the sushi table meant that we were at the END of the conveyor belt, so lots of good things were probably being taken before we saw them (the restaurant got busy after we arrived). Price: The pricing is per plate. Each item is on a different-colored plate. When you pick an item, stack the plates and they total them up at the end. There were five different price points. Our family of 6, spent around $180 w/ tip. This seems reasonable to me for sushi in the volume we ate. General: The concept's super easy and I was very excited for it. However, the selection wasn't the greatest and the quality of the food and service were severely lacking. Due to the questions we had about food safety, my wife and WILL NOT come back here again to give it a second try. If you like sushi, the experience is kind of cool and it might be worth a try. Just not for us. If I found this concept somewhere else or maybe in a busier area, I would try it in a heartbeat, but I won't recommend Yamato. I gave 2 stars for the concept and selection, plus the ability to order fresh items. read more

I got chicken fried rice and was able to make it spicy, (portion sizes were huge) you can't tell in the picture how big the portion was but it was. The chicken fried rice was good but it had way to much onion for my liking and the chicken could have been cut a bit smaller, more bite size. The chicken wings were crunchy, juicy and delicious! Great idea, great food, very poor execution. I have tried this place three times and all three times it has been a terrible experience. One of the best parts of going to a sushi train is to see several different types of food come by and pull them off the conveyor belt. This gives you the opportunity to try so many different things. However, the first time it went was during the lunch hour. We were the only table in the place. All the food that came by had been sitting out for a very long time. It was dry and crusted. I told the waitress I was going to leave because of it and she immediately said we could order anything we wanted off the menu and the chef would put it on the belt. So great. Problem solved. Thank you. I decided to give it another try during a weekday dinner hour hoping there would be more people, and it would be better. There were several more people in the restaurant. However, the same food kept coming by with no variety, and about 50% of it dry and crusted. I brought a friend the third trip, hoping to have a better experience because it was a weekend evening. There were four other tables in the restaurant. Again, food came by that was dry and crusted. Rarely was anything new placed on the belt. In order to get food, we were going to have to order it separately, negating the whole belt experience. Another part of the experience is having an iPad to use to order plates that aren't on the belt. The little train comes and delivers it to you, so that's neat. Our table was missing the IPad so I asked the waitress to bring us one, to which she informed us it was charging. I asked her if we could be seated at another table that had one. She looked at me, completely irritated and said "well, I would have to clean that other table in order to seat you there. Just go ahead and order everything from me that you're wanting." Again, I did not get the full experience to show my friend what it was like to order from the iPad. But OK. Back to the conveyor belt. The three of us sat there for an hour, and were only able to pull off a handful of dishes off the belt because nothing new was ever placed out. Every time I wanted to try something, I had to call the waitress over. Every time, she looked completely annoyed and inconvenienced. The last thing I ordered, a deep fried roll, I waited forever to receive. When I saw the chef sit down at a table and eat his dinner, I figured my role would never arrive. After a solid 15 minutes, I told the waitress we were done and we were going to leave. She said, "but you ordered a roll. Do you not want that?" I said yes, but it never arrived. She said "it's a deep fried roll, that takes time". She then proceeded to walk back to the kitchen where a different chef arrived to start making my roll and send it out. Again, the food here is good. But don't expect to be able to get much of it and make sure you're prepared to just have to order everything and not actually get the full experience of pulling items off a conveyor belt to try various things. And certainly don't expect to get friendly, welcoming staff. All around, for a third time, I left hungry. Such a disappointment. After giving this place three tries, I will not be back. Nor will I recommend anyone to them. read more

I was here with my family and it's an all you can eat style sushi train. And there are five different price types ranging from green to black. It comes around on a conveyor belt you can order stuff directly from the staff and the restaurant is clean and not very busy. They have stuff ranging from sushi and ramune and desserts, such as cheesecake, chocolate cake, and Oreo cake. They also have exotic meat such as eels and octopus. I really enjoyed it except for the total price of me and my family was $147. For about 30 plates worth of food. If you're ever driving around this area and you have $200 budgeted for an expensive dinner I recommend this if you like Asian food. read more

I love this place. The conveyor system concept is pretty cool and while the bill can add up fast if you get too grabby, it was so fun to try a bunch of things. My friend and I came here for lunch. To keep us grounded, we started off with the soup, salad, two roll special for only $8! Wowza. Such a great price. Then we decided we'd share just a few plates. I can't name all the things we tried because nothing is labeled. The way it works is items are placed on specific colored plates and each plate correlates to a price and each table has a 'key' with the prices. Sometimes it's obvious (like the edamame which was salty, warm and so delicious) but other times you're like, well, lets give it a shot! For the things I did know what they were I was pleased. The spicy shrimp mango sushi is SO good as is the spicy salmon. I also enjoyed the white tuna with avocado. White tuna is always one of my favorite raw choices. We also sampled the egg rolls, which I liked but my friend didn't. The only thing I wasn't super crazy about was the miso, which was bland/needed salt. However, I think many places do this intentionally so you can season it as you like with soy sauce. I'm also crazy about the sushi taco, which the chef made special for us at the request of my friend. I guess this is usually reserved for the dinner hour, but he happily offered to put something together when he heard her telling me how awesome it is. The sushi taco is, well, er, it's kind of weird. It's a sweet mix of ahi tuna, spicy mayo, pineapple, and jalapeño atop a Pringle! It looks disgusting, sounds disgusting, but it's the right amount of heat, sweet, and crunch. It was for sure a treat. I'm not sure I could eat an entire plate of them but I recommend asking for it! Service was great. Easy parking. Fun experience. Every roll tasted very similar even though I ordered 3 different types. The rolls just had a mix on the inside, no fresh sushi at all. I was hoping for much better since it seemed like a fun place to visit, but I just did takeout this time. I did notice the plates on the conveyor belt were priced from $2.50-$5.00 each. Visited Yamato for their Valentines Day Special. $59.99 for two, all you can eat with two drinks was an amazing deal! If purely rating on taste and price Yamato would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, more goes into reviews. The selection on the sushi train was extremely lacking. The same five or six items kept rotating. All tasted great, but, you want a selection when going to this type of place. Initially the customer service was pretty good, once we got sat it all went down hill. Every time we needed something (water, soy sauce, more water, the check, etc.) we had to flag down the waitress. At no time did the waitresses initiate contact on their own. However, the bus girl did do an excellent job. Seeing as it was Valentines Day, with a cheap special and it was extremely busy, I'm willing to assume that the negatives we found were due to cost efficiency and time. Ordered some delivery from here for supper tonight. I got their spicy crunchy yellowtail, salmon lover roll, and their yellowtail jalapeño roll. I also got their shrimp and pork gyoza. The gyoza was very good and fried well. There wasn't much to the spicy crunchy and the yellowtail jalapeño didn't have much of a kick either unfortunately. You can tell when you walk in this is a family owned business with everyone helping. We went on a Monday night 1.5 hour before close. I think this may have been our mistake. Not a lot of people so not a lot of food on the train. You do have the options to order off the menu. It is a fun experience and what I did try was quality and good.
