The food here is decent but the service is terrible! Took forever to take our order tried waving people down and no one even cared for us. When we asked someone to take our empty dishes away this Asian lady said okay and then waved to the Latino worker in an extremely rude way and made him do the work. The owner was just yelling at the workers in front of everyone. On the bill there was a charge of 18% and it's actually tip but they said it's service charge. The worker told us to not tip again cause they already charged us. The restaurant is just so shady I would never come back! This place is used to call "Zen Peninsula". Never try that one but I'm intrigued by the new management "Yan Peninsula". Went for dim sum lunch at around 12 on a Saturday, we were a group of 6 (4 adults and 2 kids) and we were able to get seated within 5min. I ordered a few classic HK dim sum dishes like har gaw and siu mai, plus some fun steamed buns and deep fried dishes for my family. Generally we really enjoyed the food and the service. My father in law took the check but he wasn't aware that they included a 18% tips in our bill already. He added another round of tips and the server informed us carefully that they already included tips so we didn't need to add tips unless we wanted to put more. She said it in a "don't worry about adding tips, it's done" way that I appreciated her honesty. Will definitely come back to Yan Peninsula and try other dishes next time! read more

This place recently changed ownership. The food and atmosphere improved from its predecessors. Parking lot is small and full, but there's plenty of free street parking. We came on a Sunday expecting a long wait, but wait ended up being about 20 minutes. The restaurant ambience is clean and modern. We ordered through a check off menu. After ordering, items came out quickly and presented well. Food was fresh and tasty. Complaints we had is that they do not enforce when people smoke in their doorway, so smoke odor will get to you if you're sitting near the door. Zen Peninsula was a restaurant that holds a dear place in my heart as it was a frequent main stay during my dim sum craving episodes back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I was devastated to hear that they close during the pandemic, so it was nice to see that they received a spiritual successor of sorts on the same premises as the old restaurant. While a lot of the facilities - interior restaurant layout, parking structure - remained the same, there are some distinct differences. They've traded the traditional cart and order systems you'd find in older dim sum parlors for a more efficient serve as you order system. Service was fast - we got all our food within 35 minutes, and management was attentive to any of our party's needs. We did come in early (around 10 AM) so that definitely played a factor. Here are the items that we ordered: Spareribs with Black bean sauce: typical dish you'd find in most dim sum parlors, seemed smaller of a portion than expected Crispy Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls: Was heavily disappointed. Probably my fault for expecting it to be a hybrid fusion of a shrimp rice noodle roll and a Fried dough noodle roll but it was nothing like those two dishes in a bad way. Barely had any shrimp and the crispy interior paled in comparison to a crispy yet fluffy piece of Chinese Youtiao Tangerine flavored Beef Rice Noodle Rolls: They weren't lying when they said it's tangerine flavored because you can really taste the tangerine zest. It heavily overpowered the nice natural beef flavor you generally get from a beef cheung fun. Personally would avoid. Fried Salty Pastry: Skip this and get the Deep fried meat dumplings instead. Literally the poor man's version of that dish for a higher price. Is supposedly the taishan version of a deep fried meat dumpling so maybe someone with Taishanese roots would enjoy it more than I did Salted Egg Yolk Lava Black Buns: Lacked salted egg yolk flavor and the consistency of the filling was too runny. Corn Shrimp Dumplings in Goldfish Shape: Was ok. Basically a Ha Gow (shrimp dumpling) but with corn and peas mixed shrimp paste filling instead of having actual shrimp. Salt and Pepper Squid Tentacles: Wanted a dish that would fill the nostalgic hole left behind by one of my favorite dishes from Zen Peninsula's menu: the salt and pepper fried tofu and chicken knees. It utilizes the same seasonings as that dish, but the squid tentacles lacks the textural satisfaction from the crunchy chicken knees. Pan Fried Rice Noodle w/ XO sauce: Maybe it's due to my love for XO sauce that skewed my opinion, but I thought this was the best dish out of everything ordered. Simplistic yet flavorful and delicious. Eel Fried Rice: Generous portions of eel and eel seems to have been marinated with unagi sauce. Otherwise, pretty bland. House Special Lava Soufflé: Has the same runny filling as the salted egg yolk buns, which honestly worked better for the soufflé. The buns already made me sick of the filling by then though. With the plethora of dim sum options in the area and in the bay in general, I probably would not come back as there's nothing that would entice me to choose Yan Peninsula even over the other surrounding options (Tai Wu, Asian Pearl, The Kitchen - just to name a few). Nonetheless, will keep an eye to see if any improvements have been made and may check it out once more in the distant future. read more

Solid new dim sum spot in the Millbrae area! Although it gets pretty busy on weekends, the wait goes relatively fast because of the large space. Service can be a bit iffy, but I think this is pretty typical of most dim sum restaurants. The best part about this place is their variety. They have a pretty extensive dim sum menu, and offer an assortment of other classic Cantonese entrees. The best item is probably the baked bbq pork buns, and they're clearly a bestseller because they come out super fast, and freshly baked. first things first, parking is nearly impossible here!! they do have a lot but it can maybe fit 15-20 cars? and there are a lot of residential areas here so you can't find parking there. the only other parking available is on the big street and rarely is there parking so just be warned that parking is tough! we arrived at around 11am and waited maybe 15 minutes for a table. it was pretty crowded when we got there and i noticed there were always folks waiting to get seated. we ordered way more food than we needed hahah but overall all the food was tasty. we ordered all the typical dim sum dishes and a few others that we've never tried before. we ordered a "rainbow" dumplings dish and let me tell you, it was basically just one of each of their top selling dumplings. it shouldn't have been called rainbow haha. another thing was we got the salt and pepper tofu but it was not your regular salt and pepper tofu so be sure to ask your server for the little salt and pepper cubed tofu if that's what you want. the price was actually not bad for all the food we ordered and i think we took half of it home! read more

Yan Peninsula is a solid and newer dimsum spot! We decided to come here because of the adorable Shin Chan (or Jjangu if you are Korean like me) custard buns! We noticed that they have other cute and unique items like coconut bunny desserts and swan shaped puffs. We arrived at 10AM on a Sunday and it was pretty empty with no line, so we were seated right away. This restaurant gives you a menu where you select which items you want, they don't walk around with the carts like in other dimsum spots. I didn't know the names of a lot of the dishes, so I did a lot of pointing at photos and asking what other people ordered. The staff was super busy and running around, but willing to help. Some of my favorite items were the Portuguese egg tarts (LOVE that they have the flaky crust), noodle rolls, fried shrimp balls, and shumai. The custard tart was super cute but the custard was a little over baked. The place is super spacious and it started to get crowded around 12pm. I love that this location is newer so it is not as crowded. They also have ample private lot parking in the back, which is another plus. Just beware when you are leaving through the back, it is a steeper ramp so you maaaay accidentally scratch the front bumper of your car. You've been warned! read more

This used to be our go to spot for family gatherings. However the last time we went my 80year old aunt was charged $700 (that is not a typo) for the crab special?! They quoted her $50/lb beforehand -- pricey but it was a special treat. Afterwards they told her it was a 14.5lb crab. Noticed Zen Peninsula went out of business during the pandemic and ownership changed hands recently to Yan Peninsula. The interior had a new coat of paint, the ceiling was updated, new carpet, new chairs, and a Jumbotron on the back wall. We ordered their Spare Ribs, Siu Mai, Har Gow, Shrimp Rice Rolls, and Turnip Cake. The food here was very decent and up to standards with most Chinese restaurants in Millbrae. The service here was decent if you're able to get the waitstaff's attention, as they appeared to be a little short staffed for the busy weekend lunch rush. The staff here do fill your tea cups for you and swapped our plates throughout our meal. The menu price is competitive with the are, so look to pay ~$25/person. Nothing wrong about them including the service charge, but the thing I really wished the staff did was to verbally inform the customers about the service charge included on the bill, as there's a suggested tip table on the bill that is misleading for those who can't read English. read more

Having just returned from Vancouver, B.C., I can say this place wouldn't last two months up there. Dim sum was very mediocre and had a ton of MSG. Our mouths were left with the dry acrid after MSG taste. The pork cheung fun was so so. Meat filling was kind of chewy and not smooth. The cheung fun itself was too thick. Chiu chow fun gor skin again had too thick of a skin and it fell apart easily indicating it had been over steamed. Lo bak goh (daikon cake) could have been crispier and was very salty. The big beef meatballs were mostly filler. We had a bunch of other dishes and they all kind of lacked finesse and were very salty. I was very thirsty afterwards. Worse yet one of our party had the runs afterwards. This is a nice decor restaurant with mediocre food. read more

I used to go there a few time before it was called "Zan Peninsula". I recently went back there to try out their food and most of them were pretty good. We ordered some special dishes for bday and I think their prices are reasonable considering the size. The only complaint I have was I ordered Malaysian noodles and they gave me beef chow mein without beef. Basically just plain rice noodles with some bean sprout. In the recipe it said "beef chow mein". I didn't even bother asking them. Another disappointment dish was Uni fried rice. A few bit and pieces of uni and some tiny frozen shrimps. Everybody favorite were chicken ginseng soup, crispy beef with Japanese tofu, big surf clam, bbq pork cheek and string bean with pork jowl. Over all a solid dim sum restaurant. Everything we ordered was above average. Service was quick and attentive. I felt you can order anything and be satisfied. Would give 5 stars but there was an odd exchange near the end where I asked the server to cancel a couple of dim sum dishes and rather than obeying my wishes, she chose to bring the dishes out instead, probably because she didnt want to get in trouble for not having brought them out already. It was sticky rice and chicken feet. These items are made in large numbers every day, it's not like my particular order was made to order. Also don't like that there's a built in 18% service charge. I very much appreciated that the dishes were hot because many dim sum places when the food arrives it's not particularly hot and it cools down quickly and you cannot really enjoy it as much in comparison to some more contemporary dim sum, places that take liberties with the dishes and end up actually falling short of the originals and not improving on them except in perhaps presentation. read more
