I've been ordering from this spot for over 2 years and I love it. For the price, this sushi is delicious. I get delivery about once a month. It's a bit tastier when you go to eat it in-store, but that's probably just because the atmosphere is really nice. Favorites are spicy tuna, sweet potato roll, and any of the fancy rolls. The fact that I haven't puked my guts out from this shithole yet really shocks me. Also, the blue lights are a nice new addition. It's almost like the K-Mart blue light special "Come get our cheap shit...and shit it all out as soon as you get home!" The fish always tastes/smells a bit off. It's never made me sick, but you can tell it's not fresh...or terrible quality? I used to only go here when I NEEDED a sushi fix, and would always leave unfulfilled. I would recommend the sushi from Mr. Coco's a few blocks away or Koto Sushi. I will never eat here again. I have been to Yamashiro twice. I have been looking for good sushi in my neighborhood for a while and this is it. The fish is fresh. The prices are VERY reasonable. The sushi is presented with style. The restaurant is small but the service is excellent. They start you with a small complimentary starter from the sushi bar and end with a delicious, sweet orange. I see that some of the other "sushi restaurants" in the area are noted for their Ramen and receive high ratings for that. My rating is for the sushi...which is awesome. read more

Servers were very friendly. However, don't eat here if you're in a hurry, our sushi took a little long. The prices are very fair though. We ordered a lychee mojito and a sake tini. Tiny restaurant. Calamari was bland and cheaply prepared. I suspect it was made from frozen pack. Sushi was ok. Why I gave it 1 Star is bc the way we were treated. We were treated differently from other customers. Small restaurant so u can watch all interactions w/every table and the waiters. Every table was greeted w/cleaning hand towels, we weren't. At the end of meal all tables got complimentary orange slices w/check we didn't. We were the only black patrons then. Prob assume we wouldn't tip. After being offended, we still left a tip. We didn't want to live up to the stereotype. This is not the first time I've been out to a restaurant and experience this kind of treatment. I love this place. I find the delivery a little slow but take out is super quick. I get pretty basic sushi rolls - tuna and salmon, and miso soup but both are really delicious! The fish is fresh and NOM NOM NOM. The staff is nice here too, the place is pretty tiny but it's always dead when I stop in for my 2 roll $9 lunch. I agree with another reviewer. Hit or miss. Sometimes i left saying WOW and sometimes i left saying did i actually eat there? I have been going here for about 5 years and the prices are not cheap than most but it is the comfortability of being one of the few sushi restaurants in the area. However it better step up it's game because another just opened right down the block. They need to change the menu design and liven up the place a bit. It can be dull and dark and maybe they should change to be a take out sushi joint only? Overall the sushi is not bad...so i am thinking the experience can affect the food. read more

I wanted to like this place so much. And I did, until my boyfriend bit down on an expensive roll and a huge salmon bone was pulled out of his mouth. We mentioned it very nicely to the waitress who took the roll back and showed the rest of the staff. Her manager proceeded to make excuses for it and offered the other pieces back. Frankly, we were a bit scared to eat the rest of it and declined. We ended up being charged for the bony roll we didn't eat. We weren't even offered a replacement and we were charged for the food we couldnt eat. What restaurant does that??? Such a bummer, seeing this is a few blocks from my house. Nothing exceptional but a fairly inoffensive if not a bit overpriced sushi joint. There are definitely better sushi spots in Manhattan and I've heard that there is a rotary sushi spot in Brooklyn, however if you are a Pratt student or you live within walking distance of this place, you can certainly do a lot worse. Usually the best approach for this place is to order a variety of items and then split them up with a bunch of friends. I'm very fond of their Shu Mai and Dragon Rolls but most of their appetizers are pretty good too. If you are on a college budget, the prices of most of the entrees will definitely take you back a bit. The fried ice cream here is also very good and definitely a step-up from the usual overpriced desert nickel-and-diming tactic. I agree with Katie here, the waiters are pretty bad at knowing when to actually hand over the check but if you go up to the counter they'll listen and get it to you. The place is very small and pretty much every time I've went there has only been about one table available to sit at. This is probably more because they are the only halfway decent sushi spot in the area (the only other place I can think of is the borderline abysmal Sushi Okdol) than it is anything about their actual quality. read more

Honestly, this is just a decent Japanese restaurant. I've almost tried their entire menu, so I usually stick to my usual. It's either a few sushi rolls and appetizers day for me or a bento box day. For sushi, I don't know why, but I like their spicy tuna. I usually order seaweed salad to pair with it. For the bento box, I like their katsu; their tempura and teriyaki is just ok. I hate the shumai that come with it though, it's so greasy and gross. Do not get their tempura ice cream either, it's disgusting. I come here fairly often when I have to get my Japanese food fix and because it's right by Pratt . Other than that, I would not go out of my way to eat here. read more

The smoked salmon sashimi is like butter in your mouth! It's a bit dark inside and definitely small, but it makes for a cozy environment. Staff to me is 1/2 if the dining experience and I would give them 4.5 out of 5 stars. Only because I believe in no service is perfect and there is always something that can be done better. read more

Terrible, overpriced sushi. Unfortunately it's one of the few places that delivers to my area of Bed-Stuy, so once every couple months or so I'll break down and order from this shithole. The only reason why I've ordered from them multiple times is bc it was really good one time about a year and a half ago. It's not good anymore. Ordered delivery: Coconut shrimp roll, which sounded great, came as a shrimp tempura roll with nothing coconutty about it. It was a good shrimp tempura but I think they forgot the coconut. Sushi joints usually don't mess up vegetable rolls, so that was perfect. It has good ratings and looks interesting to visit. I am still actually wanting a coconut shrimp roll. I really like Yamashiro and have gone cross-boro to get to it. Well, it was more like we had business in Brooklyn and remembered that we love their rolls. Truth be told, the girlfriend and I went here for our Valentine's Day dinner. Fully intent on breaking the bank, we somehow managed to keep the bill at around $40, which considering that we actually had food to take home was a bit of a delightful surprise. And, happily, for the first time, I tried an actual entree instead of wolfing down fifteen thousand different rolls. I had the yaki udon and boy did I learn I loved udon. The beef was good -- not chewy, and had time to soak up whatever delicious sauce was in there. I know I like sushi and I know I like teriyaki, so maybe it's time to branch out. But, of course, there were rolls. Oh, God, yes there were rolls. The dynamite roll is exactly that -- an explosion of great flavor and texture in your bewildered mouth. It's spicy, tempura-fried, and filled with crab. Other favorites include the shrimp tempura roll, eel avocado and caterpillar roll. The presentation is always charming. The waitstaff can be a little. . . odd, though. There's one waitress who seems permanently annoyed and does a bad job hiding it. Despite fairly mixed reviews from others, I'd have to say that Yamashiro is definitely above average, bordering on very good, with bonus points for being good, within 2 blocks of my house, and pretty quick. Price is good in the grand scheme of things, sushi is always fresh and tasty, and the other dishes I've had (mostly fried rice and some others) are very good (perhaps better than the sushi even). Just ok. I ordered delivery, which was very fast. The food, however, mediocre. The Tiger Roll sounded very exciting in the menu, but not so much in real life. The Phoenix Roll was ok. The Udon was soooo bland, but had an undercurrant of MSG. If you are expecting this place to be some kind of incredible high end sushi bar then the prices on the menu should let you know you may be disappointed. But if you're looking for decent quality neighborhood sushi this place is excellent. This place hits the spot whenever I have needed my sushi fix. Which is pretty often actually. This place is very accommodating for vegans/vegetarians. Miso soup was well done, as well as the shiitake mushroom soup. Vegetarian sushi entree was delicious and well presented, and they were careful not to put any mayo on the sushi (vegan). Also, they checked to make sure if butter was okay on the vegetable yaki udon, and after we said no they accommodated by cooking in oil instead. Prices are reasonable. Would go back. read more

They make the best pan fried rice I have ever had. I will be transparent and say that and the gyoza are all I have ever had from here. Thats all I need though! The fried rice comes with different meat choices and it always is enough for two meals for me. So even though it might seem a tad pricy at first, it actually is a really good deal. They also have friendly staff that seem to care about customers. The place is small, but what isn't in nyc. I wish I lived closer because I am just out of delivery range, otherwise I would have this several times a month! Even though I have only had two things from the menu I have been with others that ordered sushi and loved it. I have one friend who goes to Pratt who eats here all the time! Delivery review: I ordered the seafood ramen and shumi and it arrived on time or early. The shumi was fine but the ramen was barely edible. The noodles were under cooked and there was a brown? possibly burnt? Hard boiled egg in the soup, that was awful. There were two whole clams at the bottom which might have been better for dine in if they were on top. The crab was in strands through out the soup I found that slightly strange. The broth was awful and tasted slightly rotten. I will not be ordering from here again. read more
