Kung Pao Chicken & Mei Fun thin noodles

First time ordering and I think I will be back! Kung Pao Chicken (not overly breaded and good amount of green peppers and peanuts) & Veg Mei Fun noodles fresh with good flavor.

    Beef and broccoli + eggroll
    Ethan H.

This is a classic, no-frills American Chinese takeout spot. I'll preface this review by saying I can only speak for the beef & broccoli lunch special. The dish was piping hot, service was super quick, but disappointingly restrained when it came to flavor. The lunch special comes with a choice of rice and side along with an entree. I got chicken fried rice and an eggroll. Each item shared a similar flavor profile that was led by salt, the rice too salty to eat. I hate to say it, but Trader Joe's frozen beef and broccoli is more flavorful. This place's saving grace is the freshness of the ingredients they use-- the meat and veggies I had were top notch! Frustratingly so, in fact, since it shows the potential this place has.

Our little spread of food ordered

We love ordering from Xin Wong whenever we are in the mood for Chinese delivery. They are always very quick and food is fresh. Just wish that they would put more veggies in the lomein. Any dish that is marked spicy will come with a kick. We've been very happy with our food orders. It's nice that they are not so far away as well from our house. Prices are reasonable especially with the combo dinners. I love their Sichuan and Hunan style most because I like spicy. Loved that they have online ordering. We've done catering trays here too and they are very accommodating and very reasonable too. Would recommend it.

    "Chowmein" noodles

Our dinner was well, just awful. Gelatinous comes to mind. We ordered. Chowmein, Mongolian beef, chicken, wings, and cream cheese wontons. I was really craving chowmein and was so disappointed to open the bag and see a prepackaged fried noodle. Not to mention the sliminess of the sauce. Honestly, it went directly into the garbage after a few bites. The layer of grease on everything was stunning. Never again. A complete waste of money. The only upside was a super quick delivery.

General Tso's Chicken - not bad
    Rachel W.

Mostly disappointed. I am on a mission to find a good Chinese takeaway and was hoping this would be it. My criteria was someplace that had good (notice, I wasn't expecting delicious or out of this world), or even relatively mediocre. Price for the amount was really the only redeeming quality. We tried the General Tso's chicken with pork fried rice. The chicken was not bad (but not that good either). The fried rice was *bad* - not sure it was even fried rice; it was reminiscent of microwave dinner rice but sadly less flavorful. Needless to say, my search continues...

    Singapore Chow Mei Fun

I ordered in from Xin Wong after a long day out celebrating with friends, I was craving some good food and wow did this deliver! I ordered a quart of wonton soup and the Singapore Chow Mei Fun. The wonton soup quite literally made my night, it was so flavorful and comforting. It tasted just like the wonton soup my family used to order when I was younger. The Singapore chow mei fun was also delicious! It was perfectly cooked and had a great curry flavor. I also loved that it came with shrimp, roast pork, and chicken! Portions were very large and I was left with several servings of leftovers for the week. I am still thinking about the wonton soup and will absolutely be ordering from here again soon!

I ordered takeout from Xin Wong late on a Sunday night. The restaurant itself is not meant to be overly utilized as a seating area so takeout is the way to go. I ordered the cream cheese wontons and the sweet and sour chicken. The cream cheese wontons were great. There was 8 of them in the order and had the right amount of breading, which for me means really light breading with no excessive crust surrounding the pocket of cream cheese. Upon opening my sweet and sour chicken I noticed the chicken was dry and I was to use the wonton dipping sauce on my chicken. I thought this was a bit odd and by the time I got to the chicken I was tired of the wonton dipping sauce after having eaten it with my wontons. I recommend ordering a noodle dish if you go here as my friend got one and it looked far superior to my chicken.

Let me preface this by stating that I LOVE Chinese food. I love authentic Chinese food (I spent a few months in China), but I also love Americanized Chinese food. I am in the search for the best cheap Chinese lunch special of any sort in Minneapolis and while I have been to Xin Wong before, I forgot to review it. It's located in a safe neighborhood in South Minneapolis. There is parking inside of the strip mall and there are a few small tables if you choose to dine in. I got the General Tso's lunch special, extremely hot. They did a good job of giving it some heat and the chicken was quite tender. One plus that I really liked about Xin Wong is that they offer chicken fried rice as an option as opposed to the traditional pork fried rice. Very nice combination of flavors on things with the sauce not being overwhelmingly sweet. Lone downside was that the egg roll was a tad subpar, both in terms of size and taste. Overall, it was a nice deal for $8 for entree, fried rice, and egg roll or soup. Living just a few blocks south of downtown, it's a little bit of a hike depending on traffic, but I'll definitely be hitting it again when over that way. P.S. Sorry for the picture, as I was starving and one of the few humans left on earth who still use a BlackBerry.

Bean curd home style ($8.75). Not bad, but oily.
    Kedar D.

I had hopes Xin Wong would be my bulletproof, affordable and slightly-above-average-in-flavor Americanized Chinese food stripmall joint. It's not quite that, but it's decent, if oily. Pro-tip: their website is old-school (and made me worry it's not secure) but I successfully placed an online order and don't have credit card fraud! The vegetable rolls ($1.50 each) had good texture but were full of celery, which ruined them. The vegetable fried rice ($5.25), which I asked to be made without egg, was bland. The kung pao tofu ($8.75) was decent, but full of celery. It's always a crapshoot whether or not kung pao will have celery, so be warned. The vegetable chow fun ($8.35) lacked flavor and featured overcooked, mushy noodles. Take a pass. Lastly, the broccoli with garlic sauce ($8.25) and bean curd home style ($8.75) both tasted all right, but were drowning in oil. If you're looking for Americanized Chinese food in Minneapolis, Xin Wong isn't bad and I'm not sure there's any place significantly better. Hunan Restaurant in Bloomington is solid, but a longer drive. For authentic Szechuan/Chinese food, check out Grand Szechuan in Bloomington, Szechuan Spice in Minneapolis, or Tea House/Legendary Spice/Lao Sze Chuan in Stadium Village/Prospect Park.

Veggie lo mein combo (w/ veggie fried rice and veggie only egg roll)
    Cassie M.

Holy fast, Batman! If you want Chinese takeout at lightning speeds, this is your place. I'm talkin' like we literally ordered our food via phone (although in the past have always ordered online) while leaving the Super America parking lot on 35th & Nicollet, and by the time we scootered the 12 blocks down Nicollet to Xin Wong, it was already ready for pick-up. That's mind-blowingly fast service. We brought it home to devour, and devour we did. I'm not going to play-by-play this whole meal because it's just easier to tell you that it was all great. Cream cheese wontons to share, veggie lo mein combo platter for me (with veggie fried rice and veggie only egg roll, did you guess I'm vegetarian?), and General Tso chicken combo platter for my boyfriend (with pork fried rice and regular egg roll). Everything was hot, flavorful, salty, filling, delicious. The perfect dinner at home with Netflix after a progressive happy hour of cocktails out on the town. In the past, I've had the mixed veggies which are hit and miss, sometimes soggy with too much brown sauce, but other times fresh and crunchy. The white rice is always well cooked, but tonight went for the fried and it was good, too. My boyfriend almost always gets the General Tso chicken and considers it among the best anywhere. Everything comes with extra sauce packets (sweet & sour, soy, spicy mustard), chop sticks if you want, and fortune cookies. My fortune is too funny not to share: "Watch your relations without other people carefully, he reserved." Um, your guess is as good as mine.... Again, the speed tho. It bears repeating. Called, drove down the street, and it was ready for pick up. Literally less than 10 minutes.

I reviewed Shuang Cheng previously, and the last time was a bit more than a year ago. In…read morere-reading my reviews, I stand by everything I've said about the excellent consistent quality of the food, the service, and how much I enjoy coming to this restaurant. I truly hope they are around longer than I am. I would hate to find out this was one of the choices no longer available to us. Please read my previous reviews for a more inclusive view; this review focuses only on their lobster. I had previously mentioned that they prices of their lobsters (I love the version with black bean sauce) have gone up tremendously. While true, there seems to have been a subtle change in their pricing strategy. Previously (as of before the pandemic), the lobster was priced by the pound, which is the conventional way of doing it. However, they seem to have two lobster prices. The first one is called "Big Lobster" and they say it's between 2 and 2 and half pounds per lobster. The price of that (as of this review) is $56 dollars, or $28 per pound. That's not really a bad price at all. It's expensive, but reasonable. The other lobster is called "Live Lobster" and is priced $10 less at $46. So the real question is how much does this second version weigh? I ordered the Big Lobster, but they said they were out of it. I asked the weight of the "Live Lobster" but I didn't really get a straight answer, but he seemed to say "about two pounds" which doesn't really make sense because that's the price of the larger, more expensive lobster. But I decided to go for it anyway. As I stated in my last review, I'm guessing this lobster is at least two pounds, based on many years of eating lobster. For this review, I had ChatGPT translate the the Chinese on the menu, thinking it was secret code for "if you can read Chinese, save ten dollars by ordering this version" but AI says the Chinese means "lobster" so if you spoke Chinese, you'd still be mystified. So my recommendation is order the version that is ten dollars cheaper and you may (or may not) be paying $23 a pound. Price aside, I love this version of lobster and it is certainly a better deal than what you would pay at an American style seafood or steak restaurant in the Twin Cities.

It was nice visiting and enjoying some of our previously go-to dishes. The soft shell crab made with golden garlic style was as delicious as I remembered, although at a much higher price now ($44+) for the dish. The mapo tofu and eggplant dishes that we ordered ended up being very similar in taste/sauce/seasoning but still pretty good. The service was pretty fast and the staff was friendly.

I ordered the Stir Fry Spicy Beef, Mapo Tofu, and the Pork Belly. Everything was tasty and have no complaints as far as the actual flavors. I do think that the Mapo Tofu should always be soft tofu rather than firm, but that's just a personal preference. The beef was plentiful and extra tender and the pork belly was perfectly melt-in-your-mouth, so good that I felt like I had to ration it throughout the next few meals. I do wish it came with more rice. I ordered three sides and only got one box of rice. I was hoping to have at least two so I can eat it for several days. However, to end on a positive note, when I walked in to pick up my order, the woman (owner possibly) was incredibly friendly and spoke Mandarin to me. She was welcoming, funny, and we briefly argued how spicy food should really be for it to be enjoyable. "The spicier the better," me thinks. Come show these guys some love!

This is one of those low key hidden gem restaurants that serve authentic food without a doubt,…read morebecause it's not only difficult to locate, but also relatively exclusive in terms of its clientele. I enjoyed everything I have had here so far and definitely appreciated the authentic aspect of the food they have. The only improvement I could suggest was the taste of a lot of their dishes, as flavors tended to be on the mild side. It doesn't mean their food is any less authentic, though, and I would recommend all that are looking for authentic Chinese food to visit here. Individually, I ordered dishes that I would normally order in Chinese restaurants, so while I am not sure if there's anything I can necessarily recommend yet, I will say that I thought every dish I have had were above average in comparison to the same dishes I have had elsewhere. My favorite so far is the fried pork in scoop (锅包肉) and I don't even regularly eat pork. There was a nice layer of sweetness and sourness witht the sauce outside the pork pieces. The vegetable dishes like eggplant in garlic sauce (鱼香茄子), green beans with garlic (干煸四季豆), and Chinese cabbage (手撕包菜) are all tasty enough. The Chinese cabbage contained a lot of vinegar, and I bet some people would enjoy that. I didn't taste enough cumin in the cumin lamb (孜然羊肉) dish, but there was an abundant amount of lamb and I appreciated it. The spicy pepper chicken (辣子鸡) was very delicious and had the right amount of spice in my opinion. There is a Relaxing Healthy Center that's connected to the restaurant and apparently that establishment has been very popular, especially in the evenings. I have not visited there yet but I heard that it was similar to saunas in China, and I would love to visit there soon. Regardless, this is a hidden gem, hole in the wall, type of spot and I would definitely recommend everyone.

There is a small parking lot in back, but you have to walk around the building to get to the door. I would say it is not handicapped friendly. If you park in back it would be hard to get to the door unless you are able to make it half way around the block. If you park in front it is just street parking. My dad uses a walker and we were lucky enough to get a spot right in front of the restaurant, anything else would have been a problem. Spacing inside the restaurant is pretty tight as well.
