Chinese Express has a drive-thru and I do not come across many Chinese places that offer a drive-thru option. Genius! Not only is their food cheap, you can quickly pull through to their window to grab your grub and exit for those that are on crunch time. Although the surrounding area and parking lot is a bit run down, the food here is great. When my boyfriend and I lived nearby, whether we wanted to take a break from cooking on certain days or we were just in a rush, we would stop by Chinese Express. They have 28 different lunch specials and my favorite dish to get was their chicken lo mein ($7.89) and my boyfriend would get their Szechuan beef ($7.89). Although it's not the best Chinese food I've ever had, it is among one of the better spots in Minneapolis. They actually season their food well and when you request spicy, they really make it SPICY. I'm not the biggest fan of their egg rolls, but they make up for it with their chicken wings and egg drop soup - my favorite soup to get at Chinese places since I was a little girl. Surprisingly not bad! I was craving fried chicken wings on National fried chicken day last Friday and while I work I figured I better get something delivered. Searched google and found this place across from my work and decided to give it a try. I ordered online at 11:02am and received food at my office door at 11:27am. I ordered: Steam chicken vegetables with garlic sauce on the side - um so healthy! Different varieties of vegetables with soft chicken. I took a few spoons of the sauce and drizzled it over and to be honest, it wasn't terrible. Somewhat healthy and yet being able to control how much sauce (calories) you put in it! Fried chicken wings - they weren't the best but still crispy and gave enough satisfaction to fulfill the cravings. I could've just ordered wings and seafood To go that is only a few blocks away. I"m on a quest to find the best cheap Chinese in Minneapolis, so I am trying out at least one new place per week. Only in the city, and I only opt for lunch specials. Five stars in terms of the bang for your buck, 3.5 stars for the food. For less than $6 after tax, you get your choice of an entree, rice, and soup/egg roll. I opted for General Tso's extremely spicy (I spent a bit of time in China) with fried rice, and hot and sour soup. The Tso's was fairly typical. Sauce was a bit sweet for my liking and while they seemed a bit afraid of making it too hot (not possible for me), they did offer a ton of hot oil and sriracha to me, so I can't complain. The rice was pretty typical and the hot/sour soup was a 4/5 for sure. All said, you probably won't find a better bang for your buck in terms of Minneapolis Chinese lunch specials, but go into the situation expecting slightly above average food. read more

I have seen this place a thousand times from 35W and always wondered about it. I was walking around the area and was super hungry. I ordered and they brought the food out to the table. Just a cool place! The food wasn't greasy, it seemed like they took extra special care in the sauce. It wasn't spicy, it was just perfect fast, American, Chinese food. This place is awesome. I got the seafood special. There were probably 8 big shrimp and lots of scallops. The sauce was fantastic. It was the king of Asian take out. I've learned that at the expression "you get what you pay for" applies no where more than at Chinese restaurants. I've had the 7 Stars Around the Moon, Kung Pao Chicken, and Szechuan Chicken, but everything here tastes exactly the same no matter what you get, so it doesn't really matter what you order. The lo mein noodles taste like earthworms that drank from bright orange pools of grease, painfully and with lots of burning manged to excrete the grease into a dish, and then proceeded to swim around some more in their own greasy shit. The same goes for wontons, dumplings, fun noodles, fried shrimp, and anything else I've ever eaten from here but substitute "earthworms" with a more appropriately shaped but equally-disgusting vermin. Also, they have a $13 minimum for delivery so when it's all said and done you have to order too much food and spend way too much money on some truly putrid shit that surely under FDA regulations cant be referred to as 'food'. This place is really a 3.5, but I'll give it a 4 to help it out here. I am in the area all the time for work and driven by this place tons of times, and everytime I remark about how it has a drive thru window. I thought I had read glowing reviews about it before, but I now realize that I mistook it for China Express. I have no idea what the heck is on the menu, the drive thru menu lists the standards. I ordered General Tso's, and apparently there is a lunch special for $7 (it was on the menu for $8.95) It was a good amount of chicken, rice, steamed brocolli and a 24oz bottled coke. It wasn't the best, but it definately wasn't the worst. I added some of the hot sauce they provided. I'll probably be back, as it was cheap and pretty good. Oh, and for those complaining about the lack of Chinese in the area, there is another place around the corner at Nicollet and Lake by the Subway. First, "express" meant, "wait 20 minutes for your food as one guy is spraying crap on the floor, the other is cooking something, and one other guy is just standing around... observing?" This place is a solid 3 stars. The food is just what you'd expect from a quick hole-in-the-wall type restaurant. I ordered the lo mein and orange chicken plates with a side of cheese wontons, of course. The food was tasty and for the price -- you can't beat it. Grease seems to be the theme of this restaurant. Both of our dishes and egg rolls were possibly the greasiest I've ever had. We also had some of the pork fried rice which also wasn't very good. She had the General Tso's chicken and it wasn't very spicy, but they give you packets of hot sauce you can put on it and that seemed to help quite a bit. I had the chicken broccoli and it was edible but I won't be ordering that again anytime soon. However their plain rice with a a little of the soy sauce on it was pretty tasty. I can't imagine I would be back here anytime soon, but it doesn't seem like there is much else around in the way of quick Chinese takeout in the area. And the last funny part is this is the first chinese place I've been to that has a drive-thru window. I've only started grabbing take-out from Chinese Express since Covid hit, so I have no idea what eat-in and delivery might have been like in the pre-pandemic days. I can say that I think a whole bunch of Minneapolis residents know that this is an under-the-radar cheap Chinese gem, because whenever I DO get take-out, there's a lineup of cars at the drive-through/pick-up window. This place is very affordable, generous on portions, pretty fast, polite, no-frills, and has my favorite lemon chicken in the city. OH, it's so good -- real white-meat chicken with no skeevy creepy "parts" mixed in, in breading that is NOT overwhelming and lets the chicken taste come through, with very decent lemon sauce that's not goopy or cloying. It's really ruined me for all other lemon chicken. The fried rice is great. The wontons are great. Nothing that I've ordered tastes soaked in grease, though I haven't made my way through all that much of the menu. This little hut of a restaurant has been around forever, and hey, if they could make it through the George Floyd Uprising and Covid, they're probably immortal. :) read more

Despite the fact I read earlier Yelp reviews of this place, my fiance had seen good reviews of it elsewhere and we figured we'd try it. Worst case scenario, we would never order from there again, and I'd rant about it on Yelp. Clearly, we're in our worst case scenario mode. I should have known better. Contrary to what earlier reviewers had said, it was not very greasy at all. In fact, I had the driest egg rolls I've ever seen. The issue with the food was that it was completely devoid of flavor. The afore-mentioned eggrolls had to be drenched in duck sauce to be even moderately enjoyable, and even then I pretty much only ate the doughy casing because the inside was comprised of more flavorless, slightly soggy, shredded lettuce, cabbage, or some sort of other vaguely green (in actuality, mostly white) leaf vegetable. My fiance did a little better with one of his chicken dishes, which we decided got a firm "edible, but not enjoyable" rating. Two stars for apparently correcting their grease problem (at least for me) but that's being generous. read more

I'm surprised this place has such a low rating, because our experience was fantastic. My fiance and I were just leisurely walking down the street and decided to stop in. The staff was super nice, and didn't pressure us to order immediately. The wait was short, and the food was fantastic. I think we paid about $16 total, and we both had leftovers. Delicious leftovers. Its small and basic, but you do get table service and real dishes and cutlery. They were even cool when we split a soda between the two of us. This place is clearly a family-run operation. During our meal, the mom brought out a couple of very well behaved children for a treat of chicken fried rice. So cute. We have yet to order from them, but I definitely plan on it soon! read more

It's 10:02pm right now. The restaurant doesn't close for another 28 minutes according to the hours on their website. Although, in the on-line ordering tool, it states "Sorry, we're closed right now." Apparently there is conflicting information they are communicating. My guess is that they don't take on-line orders after a certain time. If that is the case, they should state, "we're sorry but we are no longer excepting orders for the night." Also, they should list the hours they do take on-line orders on their website. read more

I ordered the General Tso's, but I ordered it extra spicy, since I had learned from previous experience and like other yelpers have mentioned it is sort of weak. The white rice was great and the cream cheese wontons pretty good. No problem with grease for me, so maybe it was a one time thing for others. The food isn't great, but it isn't horrible either. Frankly, I am not expecting a gourmet dish when I order from a Chinese restaurant with a drive through. A real gem. I love this place. Maybe because it's close, and maybe because it's one of the few non-pizza places that delivers to my house. I think everyone can agree that it's rare to find great tasting chicken and beef from a Chinese delivery joint. It's sketchy at best and if it's not bathed in a decent tasting sauce, it generally tastes like week old, reheated meat. Horrid. This place is fast, cheap and always gets your order correct. This is a big thing for me, as I hate having to call back. I've had their chicken and probably wouldn't order it a second time. I've had their beef and pork, and probably wouldn't order that again either. Their saving grace is their fried rice. If you are a fan of shrimp fried rice, I have not found another Chinese delivery spot that can rival it. Ask them to add a little extra spice or extra shrimp and you will not be disappointed. So, you know those evenings when your mind says, "Let's do something regrettable" and your heart fixates on egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken and fried rice? When I have nights like that, I order from here. I order from here every. single. time. This food is NOT foodie-fare. It's cheap, Americanized, Chinese-style awesomeness, but sometimes that's exactly what this girl needs. Chinese Express is standard, but in the best possible way. They make their own egg rolls, and they're well-seasoned and cabbage-y (which is the way that I like them). The portions are generally enormous, but you can order many items in smaller sizes (so, if you're feeling like doing something regrettable but don't feel quite prepared to cry into your pillow later, then you can order a smaller portion). The vegetables that they put into their stir-fried dishes are never overcooked. The little fried chicken pieces that they use for their lemon chicken and sweet and sour chicken are always light in color, crunchy, made from all-white meat, and delicious. The peas and tiny cubed carrots that they put into their fried rice are just adorable. I've tried pretty much every chicken-based item on their menu over the years, and I'd order any one of those items again (the lemon chicken is my go-to, however). Food aside, I like to order from here because they make it easy. They had online ordering available years before others in the area began offering it. I like that you can log on to their website, choose whichever embarrassing items you want, pay with your card, tip right away, and never have to exchange a single sheepish word with anybody, the whole time. They always deliver quickly. Tipping up front has one other giant plus: when the delivery guy comes with your food, there is no awkward conversation involved while you fumble in your doorway while trying to sign the receipt. I will agree that the food here is a bit greasy, but what fast food chinese restaurant isn't? If grease is a problem for you, you could always ask them to minimize the oil. I've been coming here every now and then for years and i have many friends that love this place. We usually do a take-out or pick-up and bring it home to eat in front of the TV. The price is cheap and affordable for those in the area and most of the time the service is quick. I really enjoy eating their dumplings (for their thicker skin), chicken wings, fried bean curd, shrimp with broccolli, and sesame chicken. I also enjoy the lo mein here because they are just like a thicker form of spaghetti. Of course it is no 5-star restaurant but the food is very delicious especially for its price. read more

They are fast, friendly and the food always arrives hot. We get the sesame chicken and I LOVE their pork fried rice. The cream cheese wontons are crispy and delicious. I live at 40th and cedar and though the online ordering won't allow me to place an order for delivery, when I call it in its no problem.
