I reviewed Shuang Cheng previously, and the last time was a bit more than a year ago. In re-reading my reviews, I stand by everything I've said about the excellent consistent quality of the food, the service, and how much I enjoy coming to this restaurant. I truly hope they are around longer than I am. I would hate to find out this was one of the choices no longer available to us. Please read my previous reviews for a more inclusive view; this review focuses only on their lobster. I had previously mentioned that they prices of their lobsters (I love the version with black bean sauce) have gone up tremendously. While true, there seems to have been a subtle change in their pricing strategy. Previously (as of before the pandemic), the lobster was priced by the pound, which is the conventional way of doing it. However, they seem to have two lobster prices. The first one is called "Big Lobster" and they say it's between 2 and 2 and half pounds per lobster. The price of that (as of this review) is $56 dollars, or $28 per pound. That's not really a bad price at all. It's expensive, but reasonable. The other lobster is called "Live Lobster" and is priced $10 less at $46. So the real question is how much does this second version weigh? I ordered the Big Lobster, but they said they were out of it. I asked the weight of the "Live Lobster" but I didn't really get a straight answer, but he seemed to say "about two pounds" which doesn't really make sense because that's the price of the larger, more expensive lobster. But I decided to go for it anyway. As I stated in my last review, I'm guessing this lobster is at least two pounds, based on many years of eating lobster. For this review, I had ChatGPT translate the the Chinese on the menu, thinking it was secret code for "if you can read Chinese, save ten dollars by ordering this version" but AI says the Chinese means "lobster" so if you spoke Chinese, you'd still be mystified. So my recommendation is order the version that is ten dollars cheaper and you may (or may not) be paying $23 a pound. Price aside, I love this version of lobster and it is certainly a better deal than what you would pay at an American style seafood or steak restaurant in the Twin Cities. read more

We have not been to Shuang Cheng in a while - it was one of our favorite places for seafood when we were younger/recent college grads. It was nice visiting and enjoying some of our previously go-to dishes. The soft shell crab made with golden garlic style was as delicious as I remembered, although at a much higher price now ($44+) for the dish. The seafood soup was a nice start to our meal, would have been even better if they had red vinegar. The mapo tofu and eggplant dishes that we ordered ended up being very similar in taste/sauce/seasoning but still pretty good. The service was pretty fast and the staff was friendly. read more

This is overdue! I've been enjoying lunches here ever since I started working on the East Bank of the U of M years ago ( I am retired now). The food is consistently fresh and top quality whether I was there for dinner, lunch or carry out. I am especially fond of the chicken in garlic sauce. It can get quite busy at lunch time while classes are in session, but they move efficiently. I have never had to wait long if I was picking up a carryout lunch special. The dining area is in several parts, so Shuang Cheng has a lot more space than you might guess from seeing the storefront. That means even if it is crowded and you are waiting, a table will likely open up sooner than you expect. I am kind of sad it's not so easy to pop over for lunch now, but if I have out of town visitors , this is the place to go for Chinese food. read more

This was a good place to get a quick meal before a game at University of Minnesota. We were seated quickly. There were several tables already eating and more people came in the whole time we were there. It's not a huge place. We were offered hot tea and water as soon as we were seated. It was a cold day so we appreciated the warm drink. My husband and I had a cup of egg drop soup to start. I had chicken with snow peas and my husband had stir fried vegetables. They call their sauce gravy which is appropriate since it is on the thick side. The white rice was very nice. I wasn't a fan of the egg drop soup it was pretty bland. I would definitely try one of the others. The veggies were nice and crisp. The chicken was tender. The speed of service was good. read more

After seeing a lot of buzz on Yelp, I had to check this place out. Many people raved about the wontons, egg rolls, and orange chicken -- so my group tried all three, plus an extra dish: cashew chicken. First off, I have to give credit where it's due -- the portion sizes here are generous. Too often, spots skimp on rice, but not here. Both main dishes came out big, and definitely worth the price in terms of quantity. The wontons were tasty, with a thicker wrapper that made them heartier than usual. The egg rolls were decent -- enjoyable, but I've had better (especially at one standout spot I still think about). Still, they did the job. The cashew chicken was flavorful and balanced, but my personal favorite was the orange chicken. It stood out -- not overly sweet or artificial-tasting, and the pieces weren't overly breaded like at some places. Just solid, well-cooked chicken with a sauce that actually complemented it. The only downside? Parking. It's in Dinkytown, so if you're not familiar, be ready for a bit of a hunt. We showed up during a college bar crawl, which made things worse, and ended up paying over $5 just to park. Not the restaurant's fault, but something to plan for. The food here is always so good! Authentic Chinese food. Great place for dine in or take out. We did take out for a girls night and it was delicious. We got our favorites we usually order from Chinese restaurants. The Chinese broccoli, beef chow fun, squid and decided to splurge on five spice crab and everything was delicious. We ate every bite. Food hit the spot for what I was looking for and they have your standard staples for Chinese food which is probably why a lot of people seem to get takeout here! I found a little corner and ordered wonton soup and their egg foo young. I felt like the wonton soup was great and the soup wasn't as salty as some other places make it, but the egg foo young curry wasn't something I would necessarily go for again. Next time I would probably go for one of their seafood stir fried rice noodles, maybe the beef chow fun, or something different. Portion size was pretty great given the size though and I was able to take a bit home. Service was a little slow but quick overall. Per my rule of thumb for Chinese restaurants back in LA though, the service probably won't be the most prompt and might be a little curt (a little water was poured outside of my cup and wasn't even wiped away) but I think it definitely hits the spot and nostalgic in a way with the food and cooking style. In all honesty, it can't beat some of my fav hole in the walls in LA, but it hits the spot when you're homesick. Since it was in a college town the vibes were very college town. Parking is also difficult as a result. Overall though it seems quite popular and I'd be interested in getting takeout next time I'm in the cities with friends! :) read more

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in TC, and we have been here dozens of time. The food is good, less "americanized" as in other places, it's a favorite for a diverse crowd of patrons, and is always busy. It's not as good as, say more authentic Chinese places on the coasts that are lucky to have China Towns, but itnis a gem for the midwest for sure. The drawbacks are - long waits - even when you have a table secured, it takes a while for you to get your food (it's a big place- lots of people to serve). This was the worst dining experience ever, on mother's day at that! We made reservations for 1pm, this place, was very busy with very little staff. It took 30 minutes to get our appetizer order, the chicken wings were flavorless, hard, dry and big as my baby finger or less, the wontons were also hard and fried in old grease. They gave us sauce in the smallest paper cups ever, about 1 in high and wide, we couldn't find a server to even ask for more, it was 3 of us so we got 3 of the tiniest cups ever, which was good for1 wing, 1 wonton for each of us. Next, someone finally came to take our entree order, 40 minutes later, the server bought out 2 half orders, my daughter's and mine, it looked horrible, I ordered shrimp egg foo young, the sauce was dripping down the plate, and her chicken chow mein looked like snot! They also forgot our egg rolls and my husband's walnut shrimp. We were suppose to eat dinner together! After complaining about his food missing and our egg rolls, they bought his food 15minutes later.I never seen fresh shrimp formed into rings, and only half the sauce on the shrimp! That was the last straw for us, we never got the rest of our food. We spent a total of 1:45 minutes there, we laid $20 on the table for the terrible appetizers and walked out the restaurant! Shuang Cheng is so delicious and authentic! The beef watercress soup is so healing. The whole fried fish is so crispy and there's enough for the table. Absolutely one of mu favorite Chinese restaurants. The menu is huge and everything I have had is great. Anything with the black bean sauce is delicious and the green beans are so garlicy and perfectly Sliced. The orange chicken is nice too. The service is friendly and efficient I appreciate that everything is served Chinese style, meaning things come out asnthey are finished, so not everyone gets their food at once. This is annoying to some, but it's very authentic and the dishes are often meant to be shared in China. The ambiance is low key and inviting. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

I've been going there for over 30+ years. Food has stayed consistently delicious. Whenever someone asks me for a recommendation I always tell them Schuang Chengnin Dinkytown. However one thing has changed in the owner isn't around as much. He was always quiet and kind. The servers are great as well, but the younger male cashier can come off a little disingenuous. I still recommend the place because of the food and the wait staff. I recommend getting the steam fish and love their fun noodles dishes. Noodles are called "fun" not because they're fun, but it's a flat white rice noodle. Super delicious if you've never tried. Love their eggfu young too though it's not a true Chinese dish per se, but the gravy they make is delicious. Fried rice too! Now I'm getting hungry. Definitely try them out. I've been here a couple times now and always had great food every time. Shuang cheng has delicious Chinese food that I've liked when dining in and takeout. The quality doesn't change like some places. I usually get their chicken in garlic sauce and the hot and sour soup. I've also tried their fried rice and noodle dishes which are really good! The chicken in garlic sauce is definitely my favorite. You can choose to have only the chicken or add mixed vegetables in it as well. When I order this to go I feel like the rice portions they give are a little small compared to dining in, but the entree always taste the same. They have great lunch specials too for a steal. You get a lot of food for what you're paying for which is always a plus. I wish they had dinner specials too but the food is still great. read more

We've been coming to this restaurant for at least 15+ years. We love their food and often celebrate special occasions here. I feel compelled to write a review now to let others know that they can prepare gluten-free dishes! Not really advertised, no signs. But ask your server. They were able to make 3 out of 4 of the dishes we regularly order gluten free! My daughter recently discovered that gluten does not agree with her digestive system and it's been a challenge to stop going to our regular restaurants. The dishes were lighter in color but pretty much tasted the same. Everything was delicious and my daughter was so happy that she can enjoy Chinese food again. She does not have celiac or any other serious gluten allergy. More of an intolerance. For reference, we ordered the following dishes as gluten free: five spiced squid, orange beef, beef chow fun. I want to start by saying I only deducted a star based on the location and parking situation. It's in the middle of the Univeristy and you have to street park, which can be tough at times. The food and service were great. We had been searching for a good Chinese place since moving here. I like their lunch special. There's so many good options and the portion size is fair. You get the entree, chicken fried rice or white rice, and either an egg roll or cream cheese wontons. The cream cheese wontons were tasty. I do wish they had crab Rangoon though. I ordered the egg drop soup and it was just balance and salted enough. I will definitely order again. We also tried the lunch Mongolian beef with the chicken fried rice- level 2 spice. I found great Chinese here in the University area of Minneapolis. The location is convenient and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The place is large and clean. I've had wonderful lunch specials with an egg roll and rice along with the entree. The portions are enormous! I always say 'I'll take half back to the hotel' but it seldom happens. The place is always full. I've had a variety of standard Chinese fare, authentic dinners and vegetarian options. All yum! I can't wait until I'm sent back to Minneapolis for work. So good! read more

Visiting Minneapolis for the first time - we decided to have some Chinese food after we landed -ended up in the university district at this place. I had a roast duck special for $10.95 -so cheap -and my husband had the roast pork special for $10.95-again, cheap. We also had hot and sour soup with they called sweet-and-sour here and the wonton soup which I've read about is supposed to be great. The food was very good. This is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in Minneapolis! The food is so incredibly flavorful, and the portions are huge for a very reasonable price. We ordered chicken & veggies in garlic sauce and Beef chow fun. They had totally different flavors which made sharing the meals fun! The service is stellar. Right when you walk in there's a worker trying to get you seated asap! They're clearing tables extremely fast, making sure to get you seated quickly. Our waiter was so kind and smiling nonstop!! The best Chinese restaurant in Minneapolis. It's your traditional Chinese restaurant where they serve hot tea for free. I always get the seafood fried noodles which I don't know what's the name of it on the menu but it takes Foooooorrrrreeeeevvvveeerrrrrr for them to cook. The down fall is not all the food comes out at once. So you could be almost done eating and then the noodles will eventually make it to your table. read more

Been meaning to try Shuang Chang for a while now since it's close by and have heard rave reviews about it being a pretty authentic Chinese / Cantonese spot. It was packed when we got there but thankfully there was an open table for us, and we delve into their vast menu right away - everything looked very yummy. The prices were not bad and you can get some pretty value items from here, especially during lunch. For example our duck platter with Chinese broccoli and rice was only $10. We also ordered the scallops and Chinese broccoli and it had that kind of clear salty sauce on it - they were both delicious but nothing blew my mind exactly. Everything we had was SO good, and it was piping hot! When we got there the line was out the door, but we did get there right at dinner time. We were set down quickly thankfully we did not have to wait very long before being seated. At the very most we probably waited about five minutes. After being seated they brought us our drinks and took our order quickly, the food also did not take long to arrive after placing our order. I would say maybe 15 to 20 minutes. It was fast considering how busy they were. The food was amazing! Honestly I would highly recommend going here and trying anything, this was our first time there and like I mentioned before the food was piping hot. Sometimes you go to restaurants and the food comes out warm or warm hot but this was extremely hot which was nice I'm not complaining. We ordered a wonton soup, sesame chicken, potstickers. When we ordered the wonton soup I was thinking they were going to bring out a much bigger bowl but it was much smaller the I expected but it was very delicious! The potstickers were so good, I'm sure they were home made since the breading on the potstickers was so soft and spongy they were very good. The sesame chick had a saddle spice to it and sweet too, it was soft but also had good crunch. Finally was able to try Shuang Cheng Restaurant with my family. Ordered egg rolls, pork in garlic sauce, beef chow fun, a beef and broccoli rice plate, and chicken and corn soup. Overall, all of our dishes were good. Egg rolls were tasty. Probably could have used more cabbage filling to make it great but the filling was seasoned and tasty. Pork in garlic sauce is my taste test and it passed. Good amount of pork, bamboo strips, carrots. Would have like some sliced water chestnuts and celery strips for a bit more crunch in every bite. Beef chow fun was your typical dish. Good noodles, beef, and bean sprouts. Noodles were cooked well; not mushy and clumped together. The beef and broccoli rice plate my son ordered was large and tasty. Could have used more seasoning; would have been five star. Having a large bowl of chicken corn soup on a cold night hit the spot. Easy and simple we finished the large bowl you get with some white pepper on top. Seafood dishes here aren't cheap but what restaurant is. Love that they have some Cantonese dishes I haven't seen on menus elsewhere. Look forward to trying them our next visit! Our waitress service was good and attentive, especially since the restaurant filled up with tables soon after our arrival. This was probably the best of the three Chinese restaurant tried so far on the University Avenue row. One more to go. read more
