I have been a regular here for about a year and a half. Today I ordered the same thing I order 2-3 times a week on my way to work. I had a brief window but it was doable. Especially because I figured at this point they would recognize me. Upon walking in someone else was paying for their food. I attempted to go to the man who usually helps me a couple times a week and leave him my money with a tip so I could grab my food and leave. Not only did him and the woman who works the front not recognize me, they had no idea what I order and my food hadn't even been started but they knew I ordered it. Extremely disappointed. Classic takeout: you call and within 20 minutes have a ten pound plastic bag of food for $20. The entryway/register does not give one confidence in the safety of the area but I try to be in and out so what can you do. For sure wouldn't recommend eating at the few plastic tables along the wall although I have seen people taking the risk. I ordered from this place through door dash. Probably won't happen again. I ordered General Tso Chicken, Chicken Pad Thai, cream cheese wontons, and buttery garlic stir fried Potatoes. Based on what showed up at my door this is not freshly made food. The General Tso Chicken was very sticky and didn't have much sauce, more like a saucy batter. The chicken was mostly the breading. I have had better frozen from the freezer section at Costco. Chicken fried rice was blah. Really not flavor. Chicken was such small pieces it could have been ground. But even with the SMALL pieces it was still very dry, The Pad Thai was so sticky and dry I couldn't even eat it. Wontons were ok but clearly cooked in dirty (too hot) grease. Pretty sure they use the same grease for everything, and the char marks show it hasn't been cleaned in some time. The price was extremely high for what I received. Had this been the quality of food I received in a mega mall food court by a large chain, and I only paid $8 for everything it may have been worth it. This certainly is not a go to Asian Place in St Paul. So many other choices. On a good note I feel if I called back and complained, they would most likely compensate me for my troubles. However, I am not sure I could stomach this place again even if it was free. Food was similar to one of these Asian Buffets that do not have enough traffic to keep the food fresh, but they let the pan sit in the warmer all day anyway. read more

Terrible service and bland food. I was walking by and decided I'd try this spot. It has been many years since I had tried anything from here. I walked in and the place was empty so I walked up to the counter and the 3 workers just stared at me. I asked to place an order and a elderly woman came up to the counter and said nothing to me. I asked how much rice you get with the combo and got no answer. I then asked could I substitute more Lo-Mein in instead of rice if I payed an extra buck or two and she pointed to combo page and shook her head. I was surprised as many places will let you do this but I thought ok w/e. I ordered the large House Lo-Mein payed for my order and left. Got to my office and opened it up to a rather foul smell. As I ate the food I noticed they gave me just shrimps and not many either. Ordered the Mongolian beef and pork ribs. Fried rice that came with the beef was plain and lack any sort of seasoning. The beef was tender but overly sauced. The onions and green peppers dominated the beef. The pork ribs were alright. Sweet bbq sauce but nothing to golt about. The vegetable egg roll that came with the dish was also plain. They unfortunately didn't deliver in our area but I am so glad I went and picked it up anyways. We ordered lunch special sesame chicken and crab Rangoon's and both were awesome. The sesame chicken is crunchy, delightfully sweet, and not overly loaded with brown sauce. The portions were good, for a lunch special. I have leftovers for tomorrow. The lunch special includes rice, the entree, and either soda or a side for $6. The crab rangoons were awesome. Crunchy, and filled with crab that was surprisingly tasty! (Not just a buncha cream cheese) The order was easy over the phone, was ready in 15 minutes. The shop is a little hard to find on University. But there is a little parking lot on the side. Once you're in the lot you have to walk on University to the front of the building to find China One. (If you enter through the door on the side you'll end up in the kitchen of another establishment like I did... oops!). All in all a great experience, and I'm not feeling sluggish and gross all day after eating it which is a huge plus! read more

The reason why I did not give them a 5 star is because I've been eating there for years and the taste along with the quality of the food Is not as good as a used to be. This year, I noticed the quality of the food along with the taste is not as good as it used to be compared to the years before. That's the only reason why I'm rating them a 4 star. My family go here once a month for take out. We usually order ahead and then pick up our food on the way home. It's always 20 minutes. The food is always fresh and they provide fast service. Portions are big (for me anyways) I usually get 2-3 meals out of what I order. Ever since my husband ordered general Taos chicken, that's the one thing I'll always order. Ive never had anyone else's general Taos so I was told it's normally more spicy but this one isn't at all for me. Ive also tried their cream cheese puffs/wontons, sweet and sour chicken (sauce isn't the best but I love how their chicken tastes/breaded-not hard), beef fried rice, beef and broccoli, egg rolls. Overall I love it. They deliver to me which is great when I'm lazy. Highly recommend. Sometimes I have a hard time getting through when calling but I just keep trying. Or drive there. We tried China One on a whim, after they left a delivery menu in the mailbox. I have to say I'm pleased with the delivery experience. The menu is wide ranging. We kept to the basics. Our shrimp egg rolls were big and crispy. The kung pao chicken wasn't overly hot, but did have plenty of fresh veggies and tender chicken breast. The tofu in the garlic tofu was fried up properly, and there were plenty of broccoli, green beans and peppers in the mix, though the overall presentation had a bit too much sauce. Shrimp fried rice did not stint the shrimp, and was properly savory. Food arrived 30 minutes after ordering, just as promised. We had enough to gorge ourselves for dinner, and still have two generous lunches left over for tomorrow. I'd order from these guys again, for sure. read more

Great prices for their combos. The shrimp fried rice is the best. Their Hunan shrimp, Hunan Beef, and Hunan Chicken are all great dishes. I love their Happy Family. I love their chicken chow fun when they don't burn it. The rations are very hearty. The lunch combos can probably feed at least 2 people. We always order their party trays. They have the best prices for large party trays. The prices on them keep going up, but it's still the best price in town. For around $35 you can get a large party tray of most of their non-sea food stuff. I catered a birthday party once for $100 and still had plenty of left overs. There are 2 things I don't like. Their egg rolls. It's more like fried spring rolls and the wrap is too thick. Some people may like that. Their fried fish doesn't taste that good. It's soaked with oil and the breading on them doesn't taste good. This is strictly a take out place, but they do have a couple tables inside. They have free delivery as well. The ambiance isn't too pleasing, but I'm able to get in and out quickly. The workers speak broken engrish which can sometime be hard to understand. Parking sucks. I just park in the street whenever I can find a spot or in the Life Track parking lot where I risk my car being towed. There is a parking lot dedicated to the complex, but it's always full. I highly recommend this place. It's 100 times better than Saigon, which is just a few doors down. read more

Not your typical Chinese fare, nor is it foo foo fusion this or that. This is an honest take on Asian cuisine with a focus on fresh ingredients without a lot of MSG or overly sugary sauces. You'll see your favorite numbers like General Tso and Orange Chicken, Kung Pao but there's a definite healthy edge at China One. Even when I overindulge in their shrimp with vegetables or Hunan chicken, I don't feel as bloated or food coma'd as I normally would at any other random Chinese place. I work at a hospital and ordered food for my coworker and I at 5:20, I was told it would take an hour but I said that's fine. Two hours later I had to call to see where my food was, he said on it's way. I finally got my food and the chow menu had leaked all over, my orange chicken was cold and gelatinous and the rice somehow smelled like cigarettes. Last night we ordered 41 bucks worth of food from China One and had it delivered. It literally took 2 hours for the food to arrive. When the delivery boy showed up, no apology but he did say 'it only took me 8 minutes to get here' and 'they were short 1 cook'. After the initial 45 minutes I called and they told me 'he was on his way'. 25 minutes went by and we called again only to be told it should be there in 10-20 minutes. Finally right at the 2 hour mark the food showed up. When the did did show up the food was cold! I called them and the lady I spoke with was arguing with someone in the background for about 2-3 minutes. Asked her what she was talking about and she explained the chow mein to me. Zero apology! I was hopeful when I read a handful of the reviews for China One. Alas, I can't contribute to the fanfare. While they took over an hour to deliver the food, I was prepared to withhold judgment if the food was good. It had substance, flavor, some nutritious value. But other than that, it was forgettable. Having tried the steamed dumplings, wonton eggdrop soup, and the shrimp and broccoli, I was hoping for something to tickle my tastebuds, but instead found partially deveined shrimp, oily soup, and doughy dumplings. The upside: Very large menu, wide variety of combos and make-your-own combo is an option (though you need to know ahead of time how this works, and this info is not printed on their take-away menu). Large portions are the norm, and the prices are low. Some of the dishes are quite good - I can specifically recommend the Singapore Chow Mai and the Beef Chow Fun. The service is reasonably fast, and I've only once had them make an error on an order (which they promptly fixed). The downside: Quality tends to be very middle-of-the-road on most items, and freshness can be a problem. Dishes like Orange Chicken, Sesame Beef and so forth are assembled from heavily breaded chunks of meat that are obviously cooked long in advance and tend to be tough, dry and occasionally turn out to be nothing but lumps of fried batter. The White Sauce (or as I call it, "What Sauce??") as found on Shrimp Chow Mein or Moo Goo Gai Pan seems to be nothing more than thickened salt water with perhaps some garlic added; it is very salty but otherwise bland. They tend to go heavy on the cheapest vegetables (bok choy, onions) and light on the portions of meat. Overall, you pretty much get what you pay for (...) and there are definitely some tasty, satisfying items on the menu. Find a dish or two that you like, and stick with them. They do have a couple of tables, but the dining-in experience is very sparse - and in the winter, you'll freeze to death every time the door is opened. Oddly enough, last two times I was in the place, it seemed that they weren't running any heat - during wintertime - relying only on the waste heat from the kitchen to keep warm. I went here with a friend a few weeks ago and the food was OK. Nothing special but not bad. Today I went in a ordered the orange chicken. Very standard dish. It was the worst orange chicken I've ever had in my life. The chicken was extremely crunchy and didn't even taste like chicken. Writing this a few hours later I still feel sick from the meal. This food is so good I'd drive 50 miles to get it. General Tsao's Chicken with Pork Fried Rice combo (comes with an eggroll and 4 or 5 stalks of Brocoli to separate the two entrees) is only about 7.00 and will definitely fill a big guy up. However today we had a very unpleasant experience and will not be returning customers. We called in our order; spoke with a woman gave her our credit card number as we were asking for this to be delivered. She told us it would be about 15 minutes, over an hour passes by and still no food. I called back and asked them where my food was, she then told me that the credit card number did not go through. No one ever never called back to inform me of this. I gave her my card number again and she tells me it would be 15 minutes for our order. The order finally came, and they gave us the wrong food. I called back and told the woman answering the phone we ordered beef and broccoli and instead got lomein. The woman told me that she would not have written that down incorrectly, and she circled the order (as her way of confirming this is what we ordered?). I understand orders can get mixed up and is why I called to get this resolved. Instead of having good customer service and trying to make a regular customer happy, she told me she would not correct this order free of charge. I highly do no recommend this place, would give them a negative star review if that were even possible. read more
