Now this is Phó!

Fabulous!! We are in our happy place! We were cold but it wasn't going to keep us away from supporting our wonderful ethnic restaurants and grocery stores! They are so friendly even when it's crazy busy, which it was. I got the deluxe Phó And loved it! The broth is amazing as well as all the ingredients and greens. Being from Iowa we know how lucky it is to be with people whose stories are different than our own. They enrich and strengthen our lives in so many ways! Get out enjoy, you won't be disappointed!

Shrimp chow mein

Food: everything was sweet Service: excellent Ambiance: mom and pop vibes My family and I ordered: -shrimp chow mein -mi trieu chau -bun bo xao -hu tieu satay -tri-color Everything was not that good. The broths for the mi and the hu tieu tasted the same without the satay. The broths also tasted sweet. The chow main was decent. The noodles were crispy and the shrimp and veggies were fresh, but the sauce also tasted kind of sweet. The bun was bland even with a lot of fish sauce mixed in. The beef was missing seasoning, and there weren't really any herbs that normally would go in the entree. The mi was ok. I liked the noodles, but the char siu was dry and the soup was sweet. Lastly, the tri-color was not bad. I think it was missing a lot more yellow bean or even red bean to give it more flavor. Overall, I'm glad I tried this restaurant, but I would go somewhere else for Vietnamese food.

Lunch combo : spicy and sour chicken $12

Phở Tái Bò Viên (#134)

This is probably my favorite Vietnamese food spot in Saint Paul, and on a street where there are so many, I still think Trieu Chau is the best. Having bún bò huế, which is basically thick rice noodles in spicy broth with flank, tendon, steak and pork, on their menu is already a big plus, so when my friends and I went there, I ordered that right away, knowing that it would be a true testament to their food authenticity. It did not disappoint. The broth was very flavorful and really enhanced the flavor of both the noodles and the meat. I didn't feel the need to add any sriracha or hoisin sauce to anything because by itself it was just solid. My friends ordered phở tái bò viên and a chicken & mixed veggies lunch combo, and both of them had great things to say about their respective dishes. The phở contained steak and beef meatball, and my friend specifically mentioned that the broth was flavorful, and even proceeded to drink the entire bowl of broth afterwards. Knowing that it's the broth that counts, I believed what he said, and he was a relatively picky eater when it comes to Asian food. Last time I came to Trieu Chau was more than 5 years ago, and it is great to see that the business is still running. It was also pleasant to see many Asians dropping by the restaurant to have some food during their lunchtime like this place is a neighborhood working class lunch spot for the Asian communities around Frogtown. I would always support the business for that reason. It reminded me of home.

Tasty pho, easily accessible to the Light Rail. I stopped by here after needing to burn a few hours waiting for my car to be serviced. It's on university, so it's easy to walk and once you regain your energy from eating, there's a few Asiatic grocery stores in the area to stock up for home. The place is a quaint stand alone restaurant. Fairly small, but has a big heart. Once you enter the restaurant you see all the places you can sit and can immediately order for take away or dine in. The staff sat out front and let you have your table of choice. They stopped by with a water and handed me the menu. Unfortunately Bahn Mi are only sold on the weekend, so I settled just pho for a late lunch. 135. pho dac biet The house or combo pho entry. It has all the meats. This joint serves Thai Basil, bean sprouts, and a slice of lime as the accoutrement. The broth wasn't overly spiced and had a slight sweet taste. I'm not a fan of meatballs, so I asked for a substitution with extra tendon instead. The tendons weren't as gelatinous as I would liked. I want my tendons with the consistency like a jello, but meat flavored. It was a little... al dente. The tables have your standard sauces; fish, hoisin, sriracha - Tabasco branded instead of the Huy Fong. Overall fairly tasty and ample supply of meat for the order. Would stop again if in the area and try other things on the menu.

Best pho in the TV and it's not even close. I used to get the rare steak one but have since switched to the tofu and veggies pho which is great. I'm not vegetarian but if you are it is made with beef broth. It's absolutely delicious and fresh. We always get the cream cheese puffs for an appetizer and you can't go wrong with these either. Love everyone that works there too. Service is super fast and friendly even if the place is crowded. Love talking to the owner Minh when we see him. Honestly if you like pho there is no reason to go anywhere else in the TC.

Bun Bo Hue

So I decided to come back here for Pho since its been quite a while...before the pandemic. Its a tiny little spot even as it is a standalone building. Pho Fawn/Trieu Chau has been around in Frogtown for a long time. It received the Best Vietnamese Restaurant award 3 times from City Pages, the most recent award in 2018. I remember back before they had the addition to the entry built, and whenever the front door opened the sub zero temps would pour into the dining room. The entry made it a lot more livable in that regard. I was seated right next to the door, and it was okay. But then it was a 30 degree day. If it's much colder it would jot have been ok. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue, which is my one of my favorite Vietnamese noodle dishes. The broth was heavenly...truly one of the best in town. The noodle portions were very much on the small side. I regretted not ordering extra noodles. Aside from that it was an excellent bowl of Bun Bo Hue, with a full bodied and amazing broth and flavorful meats. The missing one star is the reason why I don't come here often. I was reminded of that this time again: service. They do not have assigned tables per server. This ONLY works in big dim sum restaurants where there are 2-3 "Captains" watching the room like a hawk, and yells down folks to serve whom they see fit. Without leadership, which Pho Fawn absolutely lacks, we're at the mercy of the young waitresses who make minimum wage. I had to flag down someone to place my order. The food took FOREVER. Finally, I almost had to yell down the waitress to give me a check. Well the pluses are they have yummy food and off street parking. Strikes are terrible service and a singular stall bathroom for this whole place. Good luck if someone has a little gut problem (which happened to me as I had to wait 15min to get into the bathroom.) Unfortunately Pho Fawn/Trieu Chau will forever by my 2nd or 3rd pick Pho in Frogtown.

Spring roll

Trieu Chau has been a staple on University for many years and it's usually very busy, unfortunately it was not for me. I found the pho to be very mild to bland. The portions were generous. I also had egg noodle in pork broth which I found to be on the sweet side. Spring roll was cold. Pro-tip: payment is Visa or Cash Only.

#126 & fried pork egg rolls

Whoo hoo, they are back open and it's still fantastic! We went on a Saturday at 1pm and had to park on a side street and wait for a table. The place was jammed packed! I had the Hu Tieu #126 with rice noodles and their phenomenal fried pork egg rolls! Incredible food and service! 5 stars!

Bún Bò Huế: Very good. I enjoyed the various cuts of beef included in it. Mì Triều Châu: Tastes good! I liked the greens in it. Tri color chè: Good! Thai tea: Not homemade, they just gave me a can and a cup with ice. Still good, just good to know for future reference. Lots and lots more dishes to try in the future here!

Trieu Chau is a hole-in-the-wall spot that serves hearty, albeit oily, Vietnamese comfort food. As always, three stars is NOT a bad review in my book. It means a place is perfectly fine. We got the tofu chow fun ($12.25) which wasn't bad but wasn't amazing. The hot & spicy tofu w/lemongrass ($14) was super spicy but also crazy oily. The sauce also congealed into a gloop pretty quickly. This is the type of dish you wouldn't necessarily want to eat often, nor take home for leftovers. They also offer banh mi, but only on Fridays and Saturdays. We got their at 7 p.m. on a Saturday and unfortunately they'd sold out by 5 p.m. The service is fast and friendly. Expect to see a mix of families and single people eating pho.

Unfortunately, when we arrived around 6:45 pm, they were sold out. To me, this implies that the Banh Mi's are top notch so my goal is to return again at an earlier hour to snag one. There is a tiny parking lot which is nice otherwise I believe you will need to seek out street parking behind University. I don't know what to expect inside but I was surprised. The Bahn Mi has a little walk-up line similar to Subway where it's made on the spot. All other items can be ordered via table service. I got a passion fruit bubble tea smoothie with tapioca pearls to start and my friend and I both opted for pho since our planned menu item was sold out. Pho comes out almost immediately which is nice especially if you have places to be. It was fresh, hot, and came with the toppings on the side to add as you please. I'll definitely return! 4 stars due to the main item being sold out and really good pho but not outstanding blow me away good. Additionally, there are plastic spoons for pho and I was hoping for a regular utensil. Lastly, the waiter was really quick to ask us what we wanted to eat without much time to explore the menu.

However despite what people say I think it is too pricey for the food and service that you get. You go in and take a seat, eat your food, then walk up to the cash register on the left side of the restaurant when you're done. Oh and it's cash only, no check or credit card here. So I had the House Special #2 Pho whoch included beef steak, flank, tripe, and meatball for $13.95. I also ordered a side of egg rolls for $4. And the Bubble tea for about $4. I'm not sure why the price all of thar somehow became $26 which annoyed me that the fees weren't transparent. Pho: 9/10 Solid option and the broth was rich and flavorful, noodles were thin and tasted great. They gave lots of meat and honestly makes the trip here Egg Rolls: 8/10 Crispy and delicious, my obly gripe is that the sauce that I got was kinda mid. Must have just been old sauce because the flavor wasn't there. Bubble Tea: 7/10 More like dessert and a slushie texture so keep thar in mind. The taro is fine but not something I'd go out my way for. Now despite expecting hold in the wall prices, Pho Ca Dao is pricier than expected. I could compare to Lotus which I had a month ago for about the same price but they provided a far larger portion of sides including chicken wings compared to here, not to mention superior service. Overall if you're in the area I guess this works but note there are better Pho options.

I lived in the Houston and Garland Texas area all my life where there is a large vietnamese population... and for the past 5 months, I have just been exploring Minnesota and Wisconsin and Illinois for vietnamese food. This evening... I was just craving pho. lets start with the ambiance. Its a pretty hip place once you get inside. I do like the cultural blend of modern and old school, and you see it with the different type people that come in. The staff there was prompt, and unlike my old school favorite in Richardson Texas... the staff to customer ratio was high. So the service was quick and attentive. Now for the pho. I went with the Dac Biet because I never know sometimes if I will get tough precut preprocessed meats... not in this case. I felt that all the ingrediants were fresh...and catered toward the old school viet palette, which I thank you. I understand a lot of pho house have to stay in business and cater to the local palette but this one was spot on. You can just breath in the right mixture of ingrediants. The bowl was reasonably priced, and the portions were similar to what I am used to having in Houston. It was fantastic as I scarfed it down to quick and forgot to take a picture. However, all the pictures that I have seen associated with this location are accurate. Overall, I would come back here. Service staff was as expected for a busy day and we kept getting the wrong items sent out but they were nice and apologetic, it was just a busy day and had newer staff. Parking is limited, be sure to pay attention to where you're parking since certain spots are meant for businesses nearby. They have patio seating but I don't know if they actually provide food service outside. Bathrooms are currently out of service so they have two port-o-potties outside. It's a nice space and gets lots of natural sunlight, I do wish they had some tint or blinds though because we were seated next to a window and it was a bit blinding especially with the sun reflecting off the metal cups and laminated menus. I've heard great things about their food but for me it was a miss. We all had pho but the amount of herbs and fresh toppings wasn't sufficient for 6 phos. They were accommodating and gave us additional items we asked for. The calamari was on the greasier end and was bigger than expected. For my palate both the banh mi and pho were lacking in flavor. I put a lot of things into my pho but it just didn't taste like anything to me except for pho powder. The ribeye pho had a generous portion of broth but only like 5 slices of meat. The oxtail stone bowl pho one looked hot and didn't have enough space to add everything in without it overflowing while the other didn't look like the broth was hot enough to cook the noodles. I will say though their ordered drink cups and to-go containers game was top notch. I received a reusable bag with my two banh mis to go instead of a plastic bag. It's probably not somewhere I'd return to unless someone else absolutely had to have it but to each their own.
