For the cream cheese wontons they use the thinner wonton wrappers so they aren't as thick or chewy, just super light, crisp and perfect for popping in your mouth for a quick appetizer snack! I ended up eating the whole plate cause they just don't feel as heavy. My baking buddy and I needed something delivered as we did not have time to go out for dinner. We had this place delivered and tried their sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, and wontons. First I will say that there are some cheaper options which I love. Since I wanted to try to keep expenses down I chose the sweet and sour combo. It comes with fried rice and two egg rolls. I was hesitant because I over did this as a kid and this dish specifically is so different depending where you go. I have to say this was the BEST dish I've ever had of sweet and sour chicken. I couldn't believe you get two egg rolls either - all for $13. The egg rolls were tasty, but they were a little greasy and not completely crunchy - I chalk this up to the winter delivery though. I'll have to try them again. They were packed with filling. The wontons were great as well - they were light and crispy. Overall this was a good experience. I ordered the Cali pho special with all the beef and meatballs. The broth was n good and flavor. I didn't care for the rib as it was tough to get off the bone and would probably not order it again. We saw a good review for the Vietnamese Curry, and tried out the restaurant despite some negative reviews of other dishes such as Pho. The staff was friendly. The Vietnamese curry was the worst dish I have ever ordered at any Asian restaurant. The menu states that this dish was supposed to have had coconut milk in it. There was NO coconut milk- simply a plain brown sauce with virtually no flavor. The beef was tough, low quality and not tasty. I might have been spoiled living so close to Pho Tau Bay, Quang, and Pho 79 for so long, but this was so sub par... 1. no basil for my pho, only lettuce(iceberg) and parsley 2.the broth was lacking depth, looked a little like weak tea 3. the spring roll also only had lettuce, lacked flavor and the pork in it was super dry my Sig other fared better with his egg foo young combo, not the best he's ever had but passable. Yeah! I loved my lunch here today. The staff was quick to see to our needs and the food was great! A colleague of mine asked me to meet her here for lunch. The prices were reasonable and the food hot and fast. I ordered the Beef Pho (#1) and my friend special ordered shrimp pho (minus the noodles and added veggies). So we live in NE, have been here 15 yrs, live about 5 blocks from Cali's, and have been here a total of 3 times in that time. To their defense, they must be doing something right because they are still here. We came during Art-a-Whirl because we were nearby and on foot. Obviously we don't make it here when we're driving...read-on... For some odd reason Chinese and Vietnamese food establishments in NE STILL believe they have to serve up half-assed Asian...heavily Americanized menus to satisfy their neighbors. Well if they haven't freaking noticed NE has CHANGED...A LOT. Yet and still, the OG restaurants like Que Viet and Cali's remain. Kim's is now gone. It is beyond my comprehension. Even the newly re-vamped Lien Son is still the same story, though slightly in the right direction. Yet authentic Pho places ABOUND all around town, even in suburbs like Shoreview, New Brighton, Blaine, Shakopee, and Coon Rapids. (See my Suburban Pho bookmarks.) SURELY Nordeast can muster up some Authentic Vietnamese?? Seriously if Pho 126 off 126th and Central in Blaine can survive and thrive serving REAL Vietnamese, a place on B'way in the heart of NE would KILL it. There is ZERO excuse anymore. Well the Singapore Noodles and Bubble Tea are my recommendations here. Skip the Pho. I took one look at that broth with the brown hue and immediately knew to skip it. We Chinese call that "soy water" (translated) for cooks that skip the long process of properly making a broth, and use soy, msg, and/or bouillon instead. If you're desperate for Pho in NE go to Lien Son. It's passable there. The Singapore Noodles were a little heavy handed with the sauce, but tasty with big shrimps. I drive past this place all the time, so I decided to finally give it a try. Verdict: my search for good Chinese or Vietnamese food in NE continues... Cali's is a Vietnamese restaurant, but they have a really extensive Americanized Chinese menu, so I ordered from that. I got a small egg drop soup and the combo plate with chicken egg foo young and sweet and sour chicken. I have never not finished an egg drop soup. But, I guess there's a first for everything. First glance prompted the question, "why is it so bubbly?" (see photo). I have no idea, I've never seen an egg drop soup with so many little bubbles in it. But that wasn't the problem. Flavor was...weird. Didn't taste like the standard egg drop soup. And HOLY SALTY. Way too much MSG, and I usually am ok with MSG. Honestly, I could have finished it despite the weird bubbles and flavor, but my god. I literally got 1/4 way through it when I gave up, just way too salty. The main entree was edible. Not bad, not good, just meh. Think mall food court Panda Express. Yeahhh the location is super convenient, and the fact that they deliver rules...but I probably won't be back. Restaurant traffic is on and off although lunchtime seems to be consistently busy. I love the thin egg noodles in the special Vietnamese lo mein as opposed to a traditional Chinese noodle, which is thicker. The Singapore rice noodles are much lighter and thicker than your typical Singapore rice noodle, which was quite unexpected. The Vietnamese Curry Chicken (Chicken w/ mixed vegetable stir-fried w/ curry and coconut sauce), $8.95 is slightly sweet and had lots of fresh veggies. Did they run out of cream cheese? This place offers free delivery if your order reaches a minimum of $15. Seems pretty easy with three girls for lunch time. We ordered about four orders of cream cheese wontons. I've never felt so ripped off from a wonton in my life. Each cream cheese wonton had about a nickel sized dollop in each one. I've been eating at Cali's since 2009. And it used to be good...well, the lunch specials were always good and fresh. The last 3 times I went have been terrible. This last fall, we ate in and the food was bad. In fact, there was plastic in my fried rice. The rest of the food was overcooked and tasteless. We simply chalked it up to being later on a weekday. The next time, about a couple weeks ago, we ordered delivery. They messed up my order and even forgot my rice that's supposed to come with my meal. From the looks of other reviews, they seem to forget the rice a lot. Weird... The last time I went, I simply got bubble tea. It was far overpriced and pretty gross. Plus, the boba was nearly none existent. The only thing going for them is that they're friendly and quick. So I feel slightly bad giving them this review. But, come on, guys. I've lived a block from this place for two years now and had yet to try it till this past weekend. I'm not sure why either. Maybe I thought I needed to speak the language before entering or something. For whatever reason though, man am I a boner. I grabbed some take out for my roommate and I and we were both very pleased with our chow. I don't claim to know the difference between different types of Asian cuisine so I can't comment on the actual authenticity of it but, holy shit was it good. The egg rolls alone make me gurgle like Homer Simpson thinking of Duff beer. We had a seafood chow fun with crab and prawns and something else from the sea. This place sucks! My boyfriend ordered chicken lo mein and I ordered mock duck lo mein. Sour and extremely disappointing!!!! Both of our dishes mostly consisted of rock hard cabbage and onion bits. I eat here frequently. The furniture is beat up and there is no ambience to speak of, but damn the food is good. It comes out hot and quick. The prices are reasonable. Tonight I had the Pho Bo Vien. (meatball soup) As usual it was backed with flavor and came served with peppers, cilantro and bean sprouts. The meatballs are made from beef and add a chewy texture to the soup. I like mine spicier so I add just a dash of siracha sauce. My wife had the Pho Bo. With drinks and tip, we got out for under $20.00 This is not fine dining, but if you want good Pho in a hurry, this is a great little place. read more

I've been here a few times now to have their veggie fried rice and egg rolls (I'm one of those weirdos who likes to eat a variety of side-type food vs. entrees). The fried rice is delicious and bursting with veggies and egg and perfectly fried up. The egg rolls are a bit dark/burnt (?) but they are DELICIOUS and make me want to give up my future children for ADOPTION to VIETNAM. That's how good they are. Meh, Cali's is a place I go to occasionally, not enough to say often, but I've been there a few times in the past few months. The friend rice is decent, and the portions are large. The service is friendly and the food comes fast. Plus, the prices are right on point. However, some of the food on the menu is sub-par. I would steer away from the friend chicken wings, and the cream cheese wontons. The plain fried rice that comes with certain entree choices is also very sub par and I would avoid at all costs. The wontons are overy greasy as are the egg rolls (although still relatively tasty). I don't know how else to sum up Cali's other than an ok experience. I'll probably go back for the house fried rice, but it isn't an overall solid menu. read more
