Stopped in on a weekday night and the place was very chill. Plenty of parking outside the strip mall. We ordered the steak pho- one with brisket added as well as the cream cheese wontons and chicken fried rice. This is such a find I can't believe it. I seriously didn't expect this level of Vietnamese food south of the river. We came for take out, and ordered Vermicelli Salad with Grilled Pork and the Grilled Pork Chop Rice Plate with Meat Loaf. The ambiance is a bright and simple hole in the wall, but with amazing original murals on the wall! The food here is on the level with some of the best Vietnamese establishments on Eat Street and Frogtown. The pork was well marinated and charred. All the ingredients were very fresh. We will not go back. I will say this. The food is always very good. The reason we won't go back is due to the way I was treated. The employees were staring at me, whispering and laughing at the way I was eating. I am white and I have never been taught "how" to eat Pho. But clearly in their opinion I was not doing it correctly. My husband is Asian and we were there with our son. It is their favorite place and we have gone there multiple times. I am almost always the only white person there so I suppose I must stand out to being a good person to get some fun out of. But they have now lost our business. However!! We've had this place on our to try list forever and finally made a date night out of it. What a fun experience! The place is small, tucked away in the strip mall with Cub and a handful of other places but don't be fooled, it's a gem! We arrived and it was empty which I'll admit did give me a little pause, but after we had been sat and our orders taken the place filled up within 10-15 minutes! We absolutely loved this place, it was our go to spot after countless tries trying to find the perfect Chinese/ Vietnamese restaurant. Sure the menu was expansive and a little overwhelming but the food was made with care and "love." They now have new management and after tonight's visit we'll probably be back looking for a new go to spot. The food was uninspired and felt like it was something you'd find anywhere else. Egg rolls felt like they were from a box that you'd get out of the freezer section at the Cubs next door and the steamed dumplings lacked flavor. The seasame chicken was far from spectacular and had an almost soapy taste to it. The kung pao chicken was halfway decent but lacked any "pao" and the vegetables were huge. Alright so I know the name says pho. Don't go for the pho at least one time try something else. You want to ask for the Hu Tieu Nam Vang and you want it Dry. It does come with a mini bowl of broth. So it's pho noodles with some seafood and pork and they've adjusted to other meats or just made it all seafood for me before. And then it comes with beansprouts and lime. And then at the bottom of the bowl is this awesome oily sauce that you stir the noodles into after you put your sprouts in and you can either slurp your broth as you go or pour in the broth as you go. If you like it spicy ask for chili garlic oil. read more
