WHOA MSG OVERLOAD! This is typical Asian street food. Fast & full of MSG! The bread here is very authentic Vietnamese.. It is light and airy and crispy on the outside. I ordered Bo Ko. The carrots tasted like they were from frozen. It was a weird texture. It was not from fresh. Their beef was extremely tender however I assume from the MSG because it's normally not this tender anywhere else that I've ever had. The taste of the broth definitely tasted like it was from a soup base powder mix from premade not in-house. If you've ever had this dish at Quangs which is another fully loaded MSG Asian restaurant they make it better there of a thicker broth, more like a curry beef broth. The service is absolutely incredible. You will not find better service at any other restaurant in your entire life, however, I do not believe in fully loading foods with MSG. So it definitely breaks my heart to give a one star review just because I feel like everything was cooked with sauce packets powder packets not like authentic individual spices. They're charging almost $20 when you could buy the sauce packets that are five cents each at the Asian grocery store stores. So the taste is a rip off here. This place has a lot of potential because at other Asian restaurants, the service always always horrible. You will be particularly surprised the service here is absolutely terrific. The dipping sauce for their shrimp and pork spring rolls tasted more of a sauce that you would get in Thailand, not Vietnam. They serve Thai food at this place and we all know Thai restaurants have the worst service you'll ever have in your entire life. Since this is a Vietnamese restaurant, it's highly unlikely that their Thai dishes are authentic. So I will give them three stars, five stars for the service one star for the food. P.S. For this being a Vietnamese restaurant, I did not see any Vietnamese customers in there although there were other Asian customers in there I would say they were Korean Filipino Hmong. Gion is another neighborhood restaurant that has been around for decades. It has a variety of very good Vietnamese food and is very consistent. My wife's favorite is the chicken Pho. The broth has a deep flavor that only comes from a very long cook time. The chicken pieces are high quality white meat, and it comes with a variety of fresh herbs such as green onions, mint, cilantro and bean sprouts. The noodles are good and very slurp-worthy. This time I had the Pepper Steak, which was OK, but not as tender as I had hoped. I have also had the Chicken Rice platter and the Pad Thai (I know it's Thai, but it's good). We have enjoyed their egg rolls, as well as their dumplings. The service can be slow, and it's another place that charges extra for using a credit card, although they will take debit cards without an extra charge. My husband and I went to Gion Restaurant at about 6:30pm on a Friday night. The restaurant was not too busy, I would say that about half of the seating area was filled, but we did see a lot of take out orders going out the door. I suspect that is how they do most of their business. They were also very attentive, at the end of our meal, after they brought the bill, I turned around in my chair to see if I needed to go to the counter to pay. One of the employees saw me turn and came rushing over to see what I needed. Excellent service. (I did not in fact pay at the counter, he took the payment at our table.) Even with all of this efficiency we did not feel rushed at any point during our experience. We ordered food and our food was served quickly. My husband had the Chef's Special Pho and he said it was very good. It had a tasty, beefy broth, nice fatty brisket, the tendon was slice nice and thin, everything was very good and had a lot of flavor. I had the grilled chicken bahn mi and oh my goodness! I have never had such a good bahn mi sandwich. It was SO good. The chicken was tender and grilled with some sort of delicious sauce on it. It was so good I ate the whole sandwich, which is rare for me, I usually only eat half. There was a lot of space for parking, the restaurant is in a very small strip mall. I don't remember if there was a ramp up the curb, but I would say it is pretty handicapped accessible. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was good as well. Pho broth was very deluded with waft of pho flavor , but that's ok I guess the worst part were the meat that you couldn't chew or even bite through it, the only thing you can eat in that bowl was meatballs and tripe, with minimal noodles . I got the chance to try a new pho place since I moved out to the west metro area. My favorite pho spot back in Saint Paul is IPho by Saigon and I can say Gion Restaurant will suffice for my new pho spot! I ordered the chicken pho and my partner ordered the Bun Bo Hue. I currently have a cough and my throat has been killing me but the warm broth soothed my throat! The broth alone is on the sweet side, I added my usual bean sprouts, jalapeño slices, lime juice, siracha, and hoisin sauce. I usually too will add chili oil but they did not have any at the table. However it was delicious nonetheless. I enjoyed all the cilantro in the broth as well. The bun ho hue was tasty, it is a spicy noodle soup with a thicker noodle and beef slices. All we added to this noodle was the bean sprouts, squeeze of lime and cabbage provided. It was delicious and had the perfect amount of heat. Service was alright, the servers were nice however we did wait awhile to receive our waters. This was a bit of an issue for me since my throat was aching and needed some replenishing. We also ordered the Saigon chicken wings that arrived at our table as we were wrapping up our bowls of soup so that was a bit disappointing. The wings were hot and tasty so we did appreciate this after receiving them so late. Next time we will possibly order an appetizer if we are hungry enough but we might just stick with our bowls of pho. One thing that did surprise me was that a bowl was $11. They usually do a great job with service but I recently had a not so great experience with them. They never checked in on us, not once the entire time and didn't refill our waters once. I ordered a chicken Pho. Which came out fairly quickly and was hot. The flavor of the broth is good and subtle. Not necessarily intense. This time around the chicken was a little hard which has not been my experience in the past. Not sure what was going on with that. The also have good Banh Mi and noodles. All of the food brought out was fresh, from the ingredients in the pho to the toppings - I was very impressed! The broth was also tasty, and was enhanced with the house made chili oil! I read some reviews saying the portions were lacking, but i did not believe that was the case. The soup had plenty of noodles and a fair serving of protein. I was not disappointed with the quantity and even had enough to take home for a second meal! The coffee was bold in flavor, smooth, and had just a touch of sweetness making it pleasant to drink. Overall, the food was high quality and delicious and the service was quick, polite, and attentive. The only thing lacking is ambiance, there isn't much going on. The only conceivable thought I have is that it is in the 'burbs, and said suburbian residents don't know actually good pho...in fact, they probably feel "woke" or "accepting and diverse" to be liking pho. From NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami, LA, and D.C. area as well as taught the actual traditional ancient recipe from nanna (friend is mad Vietnamese), 99% of the flavor comes from a well made broth - but to pay $11 for one type of protein in a tiny tiny bowl with barely any noodles??? And maybe 2 pieces of protein??? Um...can I say again how tiny the bowl was and how there were barely any noodles??? One should NOT be eating pho and run out of noodles within the first 3 minutes of eating! Period! The portions were just so lame. I saw the bowl and was all but to ask if I got the child portion, but then I looked around and saw that this appeared to be the standard sized bowl...for about $2 more than what is in the surrounding area...
