I can't wait to order from these folks again! They got on my radar since they recently launched vegan cream cheese wontons - I can make these at home but they are not the crispy kind that I like so I was stoked to try these (always one of my go tos before I turned veg). Since on their online ordering there are two options for the won tons, one of them saying they are out of vegan cheese and to check back on Monday - the message had been up for weeks so I called them to make sure they had the cheese before I sent my order in. The employee I spoke to was very helpful and kind, he directed me to search for them on Google and order from there versus on their website since it wasn't accurate. He said he'd watch for my order and confirmed they had the cheese. When our food arrived the wontons were fairly cold but tasty, the rest of our food was hot thankfully. I got mock duck chow mein, general tso's tofu and my husband got the vegetarian egg foo young. All was fantastic and my chow mein lasted me for three meals. The mock duck was tender and juicy and veggies were fresh. Tofu was delicious and not spicy. Their menu is huge! I'm so happy they deliver to my work and my home. Lucky Dragon is a quiet Vietnamese place in Cedar-Riverside that packs one of the singular best bites in the Twin Cities. Disclaimer: I honestly have not tried anything else here, but all you need to know is LARGE FRIED TOFU TO GO. Call them (with a 10-15 min notice) and order a large fried tofu for pickup. It'll come out to just over $15 after tax, and it'll change your life--beyond the garlic, scallions, and cilantro, I couldn't tell you what the seasonings are (possibly some combination of five spice and MSG?) but oh my god is it the most delicious thing ever. This is my absolute go-to lunch anytime I'm near campus and need to grab something quick and filling--pro tip: keep the lid on the takeout container open until you're ready to eat to keep it crispy!! read more

Hi everyone, My wife and I (vegans for seven years) just ate at the Lucky Dragon, next to Hard Times Cafe....wow. Now, most spots that offer Vietnamese food and food like it, taste about the same. Lucky Dragon has VEGAN CREAM CHEESE WONTONS! These are very hard to find and they were delicious! The general Tso's tofu, Amazing! But the crowning achievement that we had was their "Fried Tofu" now....sounds boring, it's anything but! Combined with their house made chili oil, it's divine. Go in, tell em Youre vegan, they'll take care of you. The staff is incredibly friendly, asked us how our food was, made recommendations, it's a true mom and pop stop and I couldn't recommend this place more. I found this hole in the wall randomly as I was trying to find a quiet place to meet with a girlfriend. The two coffee shop diners were closed, despite being listed as open. The hole in the wall, dimly lit coffee shop next door was blasting loud heavy metal and so Lucky Dragon was my only option. As an Asian, I normally avoid places like these without a true Chinese restaurant named. That said, the customer service was amazing. I was immediately welcomed by an elderly grandfather type and then served by an older woman (I'm assuming - likely inappropriately - the wife and chef!). She had amazing customer service and the owners are SO sweet and kind. I asked for recommendations and went with hers - fried tofu (SO GOOD!) and the beef chow fun. This is a classic Asian restaurant. It's got dated furniture and is quiet. I went for lunch around 11-12. The service was my favorite part of it. I loved my waiter, she was nice and tried her best for being the only waiter there. She asked me how I was doing, and The food was delivered quickly, within 15 minutes. I got wonton soup which was my favorite. I didn't care for the chicken aftertaste as much but the price makes it okay. It was $12 bucks. read more

Hits and misses. Definitely dependent on which dishes. Tried this restaurant via Uber eats. The hits, the spring rolls and pork egg rolls were very good. The Mongolian beef is also very delicious. Good flavoring, spicy (you can determine spice level). The shrimp and chicken LOOK good, key word look. Chicken was super bland...I know? How can it look like that but have no flavor? I can't explain how but it is so. The shrimp also looked delicious, not over cooked and I ordered it with added veggies. This one had flavor, but very off flavor...like not good. So unfortunately, we ended up chucking these two dishes after trying them several times. All else was good. read more

Placed an online order and received a confirmation email stating it would be 30 to 35 minutes before the order is ready for pick up. We ordered a general Tasos chicken, fried rice and a potato stirfry. We arrived about 32 minutes after placing the order and told they would go look for the order. A woman came back and asked what items we ordered. This was my first sign that something was off. When she came back we were informed it would be a couple of minutes and that next time we should call instead of placing the order online. It should be noted that their website tells you to place an order online multiple times in big letters. It's sort of felt that we were being reprimanded for the fact that we placed an order on their website. In total after placing the order it took 55 minutes before we left with our food. They really need to sort out their online ordering system. If they aren't going to check orders and fulfill them they need to get rid of the option. Most people do not have an hour to wait for food during their lunch day. The food was piping hot since they literally just made it but wasn't worth the ordeal. All these years later, and still the best food around. I'll be at a five star restaurant in New York City eating some overpriced plate of nonsense dreaming of getting back home to Lucky Dragon. Louann the owner has become like family through the years, and often adds a free vegetable dish to my order so I stay healthy. The tofu appetizer alone could get this place a Michelin star, but the tofu chow fun and mock duck with potato push things over the edge. So, do yourself a favor and get dinner here. I do feel bad for the folks calling the food tasteless though, it's a shame the effects of Covid can be so long lasting. read more

I want to love this place more than I actually do...darn it! This place is super close to my office on the West Bank, right next to Viking Bar. I first tried this place when I got take out. Food is cheap and it's on bitesquad, but they also do their own delivery for cheap too! I got their vietnamese bun (rice noodle salad), and it was DELISH! So much food at a great price point. That experience gets a 4.5/5. I went back with coworkers for the lunch buffet, and that's where the 3 came in. The buffet was pretty picked over, pretty average, and very basic Chinese food. I was more excited for some Vietnamese options, but they had fallen into the orange chicken rabbit hole. Things weren't overly flavorful or visually appealing. I went back a third time and just ordered off the menu for lunch instead of doing buffet. I got bun again, and it was good again! Coworkers got noodles and stir fry and appetizers. The stir fry got good remarks, but the egg rolls were greasy and hard. So I guess I recommend ordering Vietnamese dishes off the menu rather than doing buffet. Decor is kitschy and hilarious (murals of dogs and fish on the tables), so the atmosphere is fun and random. If you're near the West Bank regularly and want yummy Vietnamese, I do recomment this place! read more

Lucky Dragon is a great establishment for Vietnamese and Chinese food. This is a hidden gem on the West Bank campus. There is a comprehensive buffet for like $6 and a lunch/dinner menu for those looking for more of a sit-in experience. Some dishes I have enjoyed in the past were the hu tieu xao (stir fried noodles), dau hu com chien (tofu fried rice), cha gio (Vietnamese egg rolls), and the canh chua (spicy, sour fish soup). The dishes were fairly authentic and resemble the cooking that I have when I come back to my parents after exam season. The best part about this restaurant is the friendly, quick, and great customer service by the waitress (older lady who wears red). Overall, this is a superb place to enjoy some good Asian food. read more

I use to get delivery from here about 2 years ago, and really liked the egg rolls. So I stopped in today for that and house special fried rice. Well all was pretty good. The fried rice seemed a little dry, meaning it was spicy, but doesn't taste like it was cooked in any oil. Maybe I have had to many oily plates lately. But the eggrolls were crispy. I love this place! I've been getting take-out Chinese from here since 2019 and the food and service have always been great. They give out large portion sizes, one plate of General Tso's take-out lasts me the better part of a week, and it's very reasonably priced. We have ordered from here twice now. The fried tofu is amazing! Don't pass it by. No sauce needed, flavorful and crispy and surprisingly light. We also ordered the Vietnamese egg foo young. Another delicious surprise. Not greasy and again very flavorful. I didn't give 5 stars just because my stir fry had red peppers that were not listed on the Ingredients list. I've loved Lucky Dragon for years, but as of tonight, I think I'm officially calling it my favorite Asian Food On A Budget in Minneapolis. So, tonight was the first time I've ever gotten Lucky D delivered (by Bite Squad). Previously, I'd either gotten takeout, or gone in for their lunch buffet, which is really excellent. Let's cover that first: It's affordable, there's tons of choices, and it's not at all the grease-fest that one often finds at Chinese buffets -- Lucky Dragon's dishes are much more nuanced, with lots of fresh veggies, meats that aren't hidden beneath breading, and lighter sauces that tilt more towards a stir-fry feel than corn starch glop. (Honestly, I'm trying to remember now if I've EVER had a typical "sweet and sour chicken" ovoid at Lucky D -- you know, tiny parcel of chicken in a big costume of breading and bright red sauce? I don't think I have! Or if I have, it wasn't the dominant food at the buffet.) There's two things they make for the buffet that I just freaking love. One is their cream cheese wontons, which are like little crispy ruffled hummingbirds filled with sweet cheese. (Okay, that was a disturbing simile. Let's move on.) Another is their...well, prior to tonight, I would have said "tofu chow fun." It's something that's almost always a mainstay at the lunch buffet: wide, chewy, pan-fried rice noodles, with cubes of fried tofu, tossed with scallions, scrambled egg, chow mein strands, and some other veggies. It's mild, a tiny bit omelette-like in feel, hearty, and just really yummy. Once I got to Lucky D for lunch, and this dish wasn't there, and I asked about it, and the server said they'd run out, and I got very sad. She apologized, and said that they hadn't planned on making more, but they could if I wanted, and I said no, no, it was fine, there were other things to eat...but a few minutes later, she brought out a plate of "tofu chow fun," just for me! Omg! What a gift. ANYway, point being: I was quite fond of Lucky Dragon prior to tonight. Tonight, I was craving that "chow fun" that I just described, and I thought, what the heck, I'll get Lucky D delivered. (I'd never looked to see, previously, if it was listed with one of the food delivery services; it is, with Bite Squad.) So, I ordered pork fried rice; fried tofu; barbecued pork and veggie stir fry; and chicken chow fun (thinking it'd be like the buffet entree, but with chicken). Delivery arrived -- excellently large portions -- and it turns out that whatever that was I was eating at the buffet was NOT named "chow fun," because what I got was...not that. I got white meat chicken pieces with mushrooms, green peppers, onions, broccoli and garlic flecks in a mild sauce over much smaller flat noodles, like linguini. Does not resemble the now-mysterious "chow fun." Here's the thing, though: it's fantastic! Whatever I accidentally ordered, I love it, and clearly we were destined to meet. :) All the other dishes I got are great as well. Again - literally nothing is greasy or gloppy or overstarched. The container contents aren't congealing and sticking together, as Asian deliverables so often do. There's enough here for easily four more meals. Lucky Dragon is really special. I hope they never close (as so many places in this town do). I also hope I someday solve the mystery of what the heck that mainstay entree is at the lunch buffet. I've definitely found my new favorite takeout place. I've had a hard time finding cheap Chinese takeout with any flavor--a lot of the places around here have cheap food options but are super bland or full of sugar. We ordered the fried tofu, Szechuan shrimp, cream cheese wontons, mushroom stir fry with mock duck, and tofu fried rice. The woman who handled our transaction was so sweet and thoughtful. When she found out my partner is vegan, she told us next time we can order fried rice without eggs to make it fully vegan, then recommended the Imperial tofu for next time when I told her I like spicy things. She even gave us a free bag of Chinese donuts! I wasn't expecting much for how cheap the food is, but everything was perfect. The shrimp and mushroom stir fry were both really flavorful, the wontons were crispy, the fried rice had great flavor and generous amounts of tofu, and most of all the, the fried tofu is AMAZING. Most fried tofu from other restaurants is pretty bland and comes with sauce to make up for it. I don't know how they make it, but it's so full of flavor and has the perfect crispy outside and soft inside. They don't even give you sauce with it because you don't need it! It's gonna be hard not to get the fried tofu every time I get takeout. We paid $35 for a TON of food that has lasted both of us about 3 meals. I haven't tried the Vietnamese food yet, so I'll definitely be back. read more

I'm from San Francisco, and generally a jerk, so please take it as high praise when I say this place is great. This isn't the highest end joint, nor is it the most aesthetically pleasing, but if you order correctly, damn is it good. The pho is great (particularly the broth), the Vietnamese/fried noodles always great, and fresh spring rolls are delicious. But really, I keep coming back here for the wonderful woman who works the front of the house. She remembers me every time, chit-chats without being intrusive, and looks excited to be here. Around the West Bank, I haven't met someone as happy with their job, and it really rubs off into the rest of the restaurant. She also remembers all my orders, which is shocking/impressive. Lucky Dragon is a great option for a quick & pretty cheap lunch when on the West Bank. All you can eat, of all your favorites, at a mere $6.50. Did i mention you can get yourself a soft serve ice cream cone at the end to boot? The service here is really great and makes it a fun place to go. I may be biased, as my friend's parents own the place, but they always go above and beyond to please customers. One example: Anna P. wanted a serving of their hot and spicy soup, however it typically comes in a standard bowl. She asked our server if they could double the serving and put it in a larger bowl & they did exactly that. The largest bowl of soup I have ever seen, let me tell you. I've stopped by a few times with friends who live in the neighborhood. Both times, there was hardly anyone else in the restaurant, which I always love. I don't really like to fight with huge crowds of people or wait to be seated, especially if I just want some simple Chinese food. They have a pretty big menu with lots of options for Vietnamese and classic Chinese dishes, but what really caught my eye was the incredibly low prices. They also have huge portions, so you're paying next to nothing and getting plenty - enough to eat your fill and then get a take out container for the next day. The people are also very friendly and provide good service. I'd definitely recommend this location. It would be a good place for a group of friends because there is ample indoor seating. It has pretty interesting decor, too - decorative table tops and some interesting things that look like shrines or temples in the front of the shop. Definitely a worthwhile stop. read more

This is one of the most dishonest restaurants I've ever been to! I purchased a tofu fried rice (to go) and provided my debit card for $7.50. The lady swiped my card at the POS terminal and the receipt didn't come out. So I paid in cash and left. However, my debit card was charged $12. When I called my bank, they said the $12 transaction was for $7.50 for the food and $4.50 as a TIP!! Which I had never authorized because the receipt never came out from the POS terminal. When I went back to the restaurant to dispute the transaction the lady said it never appeared when she was reconciling the transaction and was very very cold to my face. We were en route to Afro-Deli and passing through the West Bank, the sign of "Vietnamese lunch buffet" was simply too much to pass up. While there weren't signs on any of the foods and I literally had no idea what I was eating, it was outstanding. There were a number of spicier chicken dishes and an outstanding spicy/sweet pork dish. The only gripe would be that we got there a half hour after opening and the food wasn't quite ready yet, plus the fact that we didn't really know what we were eating. The price, quality, and bang for the buck definitely make it worth checking out if you're in that part of the city. read more

Leaving another review a year later because Lucky Dragon NEVER misses!! The food is consistently good, and the staff is so kind and willing to tweak dishes as you wish. The woman who works in the front has put together custom dishes for me & she gets to know regular customers to the point that we get excited to go back and say hello. I can't recommend the fried tofu enough for vegans AND non-vegans. The pad thai and egg rolls SMACK, but as far as the vegan dishes go (all I have tried) you really can't miss. A group of three of us all ordered food from here for the first time... and it was awful. The vegetables weren't cooked, the sesame chicken tasted like they slathered on some sweet and sour sauce and then sprinkled sesame seeds on top and threw in some raw broccoli. The lo mein had raw AF cabbage mixed in with noodles. The ONLY good things we had that were edible (and the saving grace for the 1 star review) were the delectable cream cheese wontons, they had a slightly coconutty after taste, and the fried donut wedges were delightful. BUT none of those made up for the pieces of moldy sprouts we found in the lo mein.... 10/10 would NOT recommend. read more

We had some delivery from this place and it is OK. The servings are food-coma-burst-your-belly huge and the food is rather aspecific, but the spicy orange chicken is pretty tasty and so is the steamed chicken with garlic sauce.
