The space was much bigger than I expected; they use a back area as well, which isn't as posh, but the service and food were still really good. Unfortunately, our experience at Diane's Place was disappointing. Two of the front desk servers were not very helpful -- when we asked for a cold drinks menu, they told us they didn't have one. However, after we showed them the drink menu listed on their website, another server from the back was able to provide it. On top of that, our order was incorrect and our food was packaged to-go even though we requested to dine in. The food itself was decent, but it was frustrating not receiving what we actually ordered. Where do I even start? We were seated almost immediately upon arrival thanks to the advance rsvp made by my friend. Inside the restaurant is cozy and intimate. The food was so good: we ordered a variety beginning with the croissant that was beautifully decorated too pretty to eat. I thought I was about to eat just another chicken noodle soup but boy was I wrong. The presentation was delightful and one slurp of the soup. Wow. Tasty. Warm. Amazing. Service, food and ambience are all first rate. It's no surprise that Diane's place is on the Michelin team's radar. If we'd had another couple of people with us we would have ordered ALL the pastries but as it was just my brother and me we made do with the green scallion danish and the pink champagne kouign aman. Both were delicious. I continued along a decadent path with my order of Thai French toast. Made with a croissant bread it is creamy and lighter than it looks. An order of the vegetable egg rolls with peanut sauce brought a more savory balance to the table as did my brother's order of a sticky rice/sausage dish. Was really excited to come here because I have read so many good reviews and heard so many good things, but the only word that comes to mind is.. underwhelming. We came here on a Monday morning and since we had a larger party we were sat in the back area (which is totally fine, I understand this) but there was a lot of weird construction happening while we were back there, the ambiance was not great because it was loud and it just was not ideal. The front area looked lovely and very fun though, so there's that, but unfortunately, just not our experience. I will confess, the pastries were great. We ordered the vast majority of them and they all were simply delightful. However, at a place such as this, if you have amazing pastries.. I would like to think that the coffee options would be great too.. the coffee was underwhelming. I got ube matcha which initially I had ordered half sweet and it came out literally a sugar bomb.. so I ordered a second and she ensured it was half sweet. It was ok, not great. I ended up ordering the glass noodles with chicken. The chicken was good. It had a nice sear and was tasty.. nothing special. The veggies in the noodles were good but in all honesty, this dish was REALLY HARD to eat. It was a mountain of noodles served in this tiny lil bowl and it just did not make it easy at all. Also, someone at my table ordered the papaya salad and it was the same thing.. a small bowl for a large serving. Just not great. Had a beautiful and very fulfilling brunch. FYI- get a reservation! We had to book out several weeks because they were all full. The main dining area is low lit and has an elegant feel. (All tables were full and once one emptied, it was quickly turned over.) We had heard rave reviews about a few items and so we ordered a few main dishes to share: Thai tea French toast, the (Hmong) sausage egg and cheese croissant sandwich, and the sweet pork bowl with sticky rice. The best fusion food I have had in the Twin cities! One thing to note is that a reservation is needed to eat indoors at Diane's place. There is a open area with a lot of benches right next to the restaurant, so a pickup order could be placed and eaten out on a nice sunny day. I went for brunch, as I heard so much about their brunch menu, and was not disappointed at all. We first ordered a couple of their pastries. The scallion butter danish was so hevenly. The Ube milk tea as so frothy and delicious. We also ordered their famous thai tea french toast, it was so unique in flovors and the bread was just melting in the mouth. Finally after many months of waiting for a reservation and one reschedule I was able to get one booked. Atmoshpere is quite cozy as the tables are really close together. I am glad we were able to be seated at one of the more open tables versus ones against the wall which looked quite close for comfort. Our server was absolutely amazing! Reminded me of one of my favorite servers in FL. Very outgoing, the right level of attentive and really on top of it and very personable. Food ordered: Coconut Croissant Almond Croissant- very good, the filling was amazing, but the outside was a little too crunchy for me. I like em soft. Sticky rice with Hmong Sausage and Egg. Was looking forward to the sausage, but was not a fan at all of the taste. Pork belly bowl- the pork belly was all fat. Pan Fried Bean Thread Noodles- very tasty. Finally got to try out Diane's place last night for dinner and it certainly lived up to the hype! The restaurant was very busy and it's a pretty packed in space but it also feels very cozy and warm. Service was super friendly and helpful! Ended up ordering the scallion croissants, egg rolls, and pork short ribs to start with the Hmong sausage (add egg) and pulled pork for mains. It was the perfect amount of food for our group of 4 (2 of which though we're 88 yo women though so if you have a group with bigger appetites at least one more main would be good). There were no misses in any of the dishes. Highly recommend getting all the sauces on the side to try too. Make sure you leave room for dessert especially since chef Diane's roots are as a pastry chef. We got the Vietnamese coffee affogato and the chocolate torte. Fantastic! read more

From the moment we shook off the cold in the entryway to the time we left this was perfection! Diane's Place for brunch the other day was amazing...just amazing! The host quickly seated us upon arrival and our waiter was quick to take drink orders and answer any questions we had. Our group got the mushroom Danish, 2 orders of Diane's Hmong sausage(one with hot sauce one with sweet & sour sauce), Thai Tea French toast, and the Sweet Pork bowl. For our cocktails I ordered the Lucky Litchi and my wife ordered the Croissant at Sea. I'm going to start with the Hmong sausage. It may not have been the star of the meal, but it was a satisfying, savory delicious meal far better than my Jimmy Dean sausage links and eggs at home. Next up, the meal I ordered was the Sweet Pork Bowl. At first glance I was a little disappointed as it seemed pretty light on the pork, but as I dug in there was pork a plenty! It was all of what I wanted when I ordered and then some. It had a touch of sweetness and plenty of savory and spice to tickle my tastebuds...for me it was a homerun! The final meal was the Thai Tea french toast. If you like French toast this has to be tried out. It had to have been two inches thick if not more. One would think it wouldn't be good in the middle, but you would be wrong it was perfection. Normally I'm not a fan of sweet breakfasts like pancakes, waffles, French toast, but writing this I want to go back just for this. It was take a bite, DAMN THAT'S AMAZING! My wife got me to start liking cocktails so whenever we go somewhere we try ones we might not consider making at home. The Lucky Litchi was it for me with Mezcal. I'm not a huge fan of smoke in my drinks and some Mezcal can be way too smoky. This was the perfect blend of sweet to balance the Mezcal's flavor. For my wife the Croissant at Sea was kind of a take on my wife's favorite drink the Mai Tai and with the almond croissant orgeat we definitely wouldn't have on hand at home. I've been wanting to try Diane's Place for months and finally made it to their brunch service! We started with a few pastries, my favorite was the calamansi raspberry danish, the mango passionfruit lychee croissant was really good too but i wished there was more lychee. The scallion danish with garlic butter was disappointing because i couldn't taste the scallion at all, it tasted more like garlic bread. The Thai tea french toast was amazing! I came here for a birthday dinner and was so happy I chose to celebrate it here. So many things stood out--the food, the ambiance, the service--everything was exceptional. The food was phenomenal. Since the restaurant is known for its baked goods/brunch, I was worried I wouldn't get to try many of them during dinner, but the mini scallion croissants and the croissant à la mode more than satisfied my pastry cravings--and they were absolutely delicious. Beyond the baked goods, the short ribs, Hmong sausage, and egg roll-stuffed chicken were all stellar. The ambiance is cozy yet lively. Diane's Place is one of the hottest restaurants in Minneapolis right now, serving Hmong-American cuisine in the cozy Northeast neighborhood. Although the menu wasn't the largest, there were a lot of dishes I wanted to try. The brunch menu uniquely blends Southeast Asian flavors into traditional Western breakfast foods. Notably, there are two savory croissant dishes: the sausage, egg, and cheese croissant with Hmong sausage and scallion cream cheese, and the spam and nori croissant. Additionally, the menu features a Thai Tea French Toast, made with croissant bread, vanilla whipped cream, and raspberries. There are also more traditional Hmong dishes, such as Hmong sausage, papaya noodle salad, rice and meat plates, and more. We wanted to try a little bit of the Hmong side as well as the fusion dishes. The service was a little slow. The food came out in reasonable time, it just felt like our server wasn't always able to help us. Our water was sometimes empty, and there was a large gap in time between the first time she was at our table and when she came back to take our order and answer questions. However, our server was extremely kind and knowledgable. She was able to field off all questions we had about the menu and was able to accommodate anything we asked for. We started with the Hmong sausage with sticky rice. This dish comes with the choice of a sweet and sour sauce or Hmong hot sauce, as well as an optional fried egg for an extra three dollars, which we chose to add. I thought everything about this dish was perfect. The edge of the sausage was crispy, the meat itself was still moist, and it had amazing flavor. The side sauce added tanginess, sweetness, and spice to cut through the richness of the sausage and egg. The rice and garnish also helped to contrast the bold flavors of the sausage and side sauce to make for perfectly balanced bites. This was a classic dish executed flawlessly. Following the sausage, we went for the Thai Tea French Toast. I thought this was the most unique item on the menu. I rarely see French Toast adapted from its traditional preparation, and the Thai tea aspect really piqued my interest. Visually, the French toast was stunning. Two large pieces of toast stood on top of each other, perfectly rigid on the sides, topped with oozing whipped cream and raspberries with a side of syrup. The edge of the French toast was unbelievably crispy. It held its structure and was so satisfying to bite into, in contrast to the bread's fluffy, soft center. The bread also took on a surprisingly strong Thai tea flavor. I wasn't expecting it to come through so prominently. The raspberries were a perfect choice to cut through the sweetness of the whole dish. With all of the components being so sweet and rich, the tartness of the raspberries made each bite so much better while also adding a visual contrast that brightened up the plate. On the other hand, the Sweet Pork Bowl was not my favorite. All of the garnishes were delicious again, but the pork wasn't perfect. The flavor was spot on. It featured a deep and complex flavor that was not too sweet, but was deeply engrained in the pork. The accompanying sauce really enhanced the flavor and once again made for balanced and delicious bites. My only problem with this dish was that the texture of the pork itself wasn't great. Although the meat itself was really flavorful, it was dry and a little chewy. Despite this, I felt that the flavor was really impressive, and everything else about the dish was still great. The portion sizes were very reasonable. We couldn't even finish all of the food we ordered, so we took the leftovers in addition to some pastries to go. I would say all of the food was fairly priced, although the pastries trend towards the more expensive side. Just to try a pastry I was more familiar with, I ordered a chocolate croissant, but we also got the mango, passion fruit, lychee croissant, and the coconut pandan croissant. While still yummy, the chocolate croissant wasn't mind-blowing. The texture was flaky but not as chewy as I'd like, but the chocolate inside was delicious. As for the coconut pandan croissant, I actually thought it lacked flavor. It is filled with cream, which was rich but the flavor of the cream was very subtle. The mango, passion fruit, lychee croissant was definitely the hit for me. It wasn't exactly a croissant, but the filling was super delicious. Each of the fruits absolutely came through and the texture of the pastry was perfect making for a delicious dessert. When it comes to Diane's Place, expect bold and harmonious flavors with high levels of execution. The Thai Tea French Toast is a must order, but I also believe that the kitchen is talented enough that most dishes are probably equally as strong. It's a cozy restaurant with all the great smells wafting through the air. The hubby and I went for breakfast and ordered a few things to share. We had the Thai tea french toast which was super thick, creamy, and delicious. There was a ton of fresh whipped cream on top and didn't think the maple syrup was necessary. I ordered a side of the house made breakfast patty which was nice and crisp and very spicy. I couldn't eat it all due to the spice level and wish the server would've warned us about it. I also got a side of the pickled mustard greens which were bright, tangy, and cut through all the spice and richness of the sausage and french toast. On the side was a double espresso, drip coffee, and a mango, passionfruit, lychee croissant. The croissant was my least favorite item and I wouldn't recommend it. It was packed with filling and way too sweet. We cut it in half, scooped the filling out, and only ate a quarter of the croissant. My family and I are visiting for a week, and I saw a video on Instagram about this restaurant. I looked at their menu, and their food seemed delicious. We went to the restaurant without a reservation but were told that we could sit outside on the patio without one. We were given a menu, and when we were ready to order, we could go back inside to place our order. Two female staff members were looking at us from head to toe. We ordered our food and drinks and told them we would be eating on the patio. It was pretty much self-service since we had to get our own water and silverware. They packed our food and drinks to go even though we clearly told them we wanted to dine in. The Ube Matcha and the Matcha Latte were both too sugary. We got seated right away. It didn't seem too busy though and they have both indoor seating and a large outdoor grass area. We decided to get mostly pastries but did order a side of the Hmong sausage. For pastries we got the Vietnamese coffee croissant, the mango passion fruit lychee croissant and the coconut pandan croissant. They really filled each croissant to the brim which I appreciated. From the really pretty ambiance, to the solid service and check-ins, to of course the amazing food-it's got everything down! Omg, Diane's Place was to die for. I had to come here on my short trip to Minneapolis. I made a reservation on Resy and was the first one in on a Tuesday morning. It definitely packed up in the hour I was there. You walk in and just the ambiance assures you're going to have a good experience. I was kindly greeted by the hostess and brought to my table, a cozy corner booth towards the back of the restaurant. (Though I think there's another back room with seating?) Perusing the menu, I was tempted to get the chicken noodle soup because I was sick and needed it. But I knew the Hmong sausage, sticky rice and overeasy egg would speak to my Filipino soul, so that's what I got. Anyway, soup in the morning? Too early! I absolutely savored the sausage, rice and egg. Put the hot sauce on the egg- mmph. It was a heavy meal, but it healed me. And cleared my sinuses. I took home a lil treat too, because I deserve it. The inventive take on Hmong-American cuisine is the real draw here. Getting a table can be a bit of a challenge, and the noise level rises when it's busy, but for the quality of food and the experience, it's well worth it. Another amazing experience at Diane's Place. Finally got to try the dinner menu as the last two times I went for brunch (I'm in love with her pastries). The musts on dinner menu in no particular order: 1) The steam rolls - This is a popular Vietnamese dish called banh coun and her version is better. The crepe is light and its generously filled with meat medley. Other versions I have is mostly dough. 2) pulled pork - I've had this at other places and it's oftentimes very greasy and with too much pork fat pieces. This one is light and not greasy and quality pork. 3) the bamboo lettuce salad - can't put my finger on the dressing but I really like that it's kid of eggy tasting without heaviness of a ranch or that type of dressing. 4) carpaccio - very delicate. Flavors on point. Great for an appetizer. 5) sausage and sticky rice (also in the brunch menu) but so good. I love the glutinous texture and pepper to dip. I always get this. We had other dishes but at one point I was so full I couldn't eat anymore. ...But not too full for dessert. I did get a bite of the Costello cake with coconut ice cream. Muah! So good. Ambiance: We had a private table in the back for a party of 9. It was lovely. We could enjoy conversation but also laugh loudly without disturbing anyone else. And Diane of course visited us and made sure our night was perfect. She is not only a great chef, but generous and kind person. Diane's Place lives up to the hype! The Hmong sausage was incredible. So juicy and flavorful, and the rice was the perfect amount of sticky. The sweet and sour sauce paired well with this dish. I also tried three of the croissants. The croissants were flaky and buttery and each were unique with the different fillings. The coconut pandan croissant wasn't too sweet and the grassy vanilla of the pandan was prominent. I loved how much filling this one had. The almond croissant was awesome and had this almond paste type filling with lil chunks of almond inside. The Vietnamese coffee croissant was my least favorite -- the flavors didn't seem to go as well as the other two, and I didn't like the texture combination of the coffee jellies and the croissant. I went around 11am on a Saturday and was able to snag a table outside. You order and pay at the outdoor counter, take your number with you, and then your food gets brought out to you. read more

Diane's Place totally lives up to the hype. The Thai tea french toast is unreal, the pork belly bowl hits every flavor note, and the Hmong sausage might be my new favorite thing. It's easy to see why Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year. The vibe is warm, fun, and just a little bit "that girl" in the best way. Definitely one of those places you think about days later. I have been to Diane's about 6-7 times since they open and we always had great experiences. This time, we felt not as welcomed. We went and it was lightly drizzled outside. We were told we are able to sit outside where the patio is and can order by the server that's outside. We went outside, sit down and when we tried to order, we did not felt the server wanted to take our order. It felt like a really? Seriously you are ordering now vibe. We think it was because of the light drizzles. Then we saw another couple came and sat under the umbrella and was ready to ask for menu etc. the same server told the guests that "I m not taking orders, can't be outside like this" and the guests left with noticeable unhappy signs on their face. There are 4/5 groups of guests eating happy outside. I don't see the problem. I did not think a James beard award restaurant would have server like that. Food came out nice and quick, very yummy still. It did not totally ruined the experience. I rarely give low rating and just felt very uncomfortable for this visit. We might still come again as the food is very appealing. Hope to see improvement next time. read more

The food and service here is incredible! We've visited Diane's a few times in the last year and are always impressed. Top 10 on the TC! We would visit more if we could ever get a reservation, which is mostly needed! We did learn that if you swing through on a weekend mid-afternoon you can sometimes snag a spot at the bar. Plus they offer take out. Do not come here without your appetite because although the menu is not large (perfect size in my opinion), you will want to try all the things! Spontaneous trip to Diane's place hoping to get in randomly for 3 people on Saturday morning. There were no seats in the dining room, as expected, but we were lucky enough to sit at the bar!! Service was prompt. We tried the sweet pork bowl, Thai tea French toast, and sausage egg croissant. Everything was incredible! The sandwich egg flavor was great and the croissant was so soft. I loved the sauce. The French toast was amazing! The orange inside made me think of a sweet potato. I loved it so much. I like the thick cut pieces and flavor was top notch. The sweet pork in the bowl was delicious! I tried it with their peanut sauce and it was a great savory dish. I would repeat every dish we tried. 5 stars on everything! read more

It was about 9:30am on a Tuesday and I just got a haircut in the area. I was feeling like a pastry, Yelp searched pastry and Diane's comes up. I had no idea this place is a big deal. I roll up to the unassuming front door, walk in and BAM, the place is a beehive of activity. Even on a regular weekday morning, the place is jamming. I was not interested in sitting for breakfast, which was ok since there were people waiting. I just wanted some pastries. Upon examining the pastry counter, I started to get the hype. The pastries were exquisite. Of course I couldn't decide, so I got like 3 and brought them home. They were unbelievably good. Creative and super high quality. My favorite brunch spot in the twin cities! Beautiful interior, the aesthetics are very charming. And the service has always been friendly! I cannot emphasize more on how much this place is worth visiting. I highly recommend making a reservation. Sometimes you can get bar seating right away but don't expect it every time. They also only have street parking so plan on walking a block or 2. Also I highly suggest getting a pastry to go. I am a little late with this review. My sister took me to Diane's place for my birthday. We went for brunch on a Saturday before taking my niece to Frozen at the Children's theater. It's a cute little place, I highly recommend making reservations. Service was great. My niece opted for the Thai tea French Toast, my sister and I got the Pan fried Bean Thread noodles and the Asian Chicken noodle soup. My niece loved the French Toast, it's like a dessert. The Thai tea taste comes through really good. The noodles and the noodle soup were amazing as well. All in all we had a great experience. Can't wait to come back and try more things. read more
