The evening started great. Upon arriving, the parking lot was closed due to a medical emergency, but there was tons of street parking. As you enter this establishment, it reminds you of a tropical oasis, and right away I started singing the Beach Boys. We were seated, and Lily was our server. We started with the Bird of Paradise drinks, and it was tasty and potent. Then came the very good spring rolls. The Ribs were divine and fell off the bone and were marinated in all types of goodness. The poolside in Koh Samui and who can forget the Luna Duna to go with the sticky rice and the crispy rice salad and pork belly. We continued drinking the night away and enjoying good food. We tried all of Lily's recommendations, and they were all fabulous. Time stands still here as you catch up with friends and enjoy a good time. Let's start with the vibe: Calgon, take me away. The atmosphere was everything--relaxing, calm, exciting, and effortlessly chill all at the same time. It was the perfect escape. Then came the food... absolutely incredible and beyond delicious. Every dish was packed with flavor--even the tofu, and I don't normally like tofu! That's saying something. The drinks were equally amazing, and the slushie? 10/10, highly recommend. And yes, we tried all the desserts (a little dramatic, I know), but honestly, there were zero regrets because every single one was delicious. This restaurant is highly rated and it deserves it. My wife and I split three dishes and had a very satisfying meal. Food: My wife had the "Beach Day Energy Cocktail" ($9) from the Happy Hour menu (Sunday through Thursday, 4:00 to 5:30 pm). It consists of Dragon fruit vodka, lychee, Cappelletti, lime, and mint. She said it was quite refreshing and tasty. We then had the Adobo Pork Ribs ($13). This was the highlight dish for us and it was fantastic and utterly cravable!. It was sticky, sweet, tangy and just all around yummy. Our next dish was the Thai-Style Viet Crepe Salad from the Happy Hour menu ($8). This consisted of a turmeric-coconut nan-style bread, with bean sprouts, cucumber, onion, chili, and nuac cham sauce. It was good, but I'm not sure the bread paired well with the salad and it was perhaps a bit too spicy for us. Next we had the Hat Yai Fried Chicken with curry dipping sauce ($23). We enjoyed this, and it was a good variation of Korean Fried Chicken. Finally, to celebrate my birthday, we had an excellent Tiramisu. This often is very dry, but Hai Hai's version was superb. It wasn't comped, but did come with a birthday candle. Service: The service was very friendly, warm, and competent. Our server was excellent and exactly the type of person we really appreciate. Ambiance: This place has a great vibe and a very mixed, eclectic, and diverse customer base. It has a large outside area, as well as the indoor restaurant and bar area. Hai Hai is a bright, colorful, tropical gem. It's the perfect summer dinner spot! We ate on the charmingly decorated patio. Even the dishes on which the food is served are thematic and beautiful. The menu has a lot of unique items and everything we had was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed my Vietnamese crepe. It's on the pricier side, but I think the prices are worth it because you can't get this type of food (for this quality) elsewhere in the area. We also appreciated the plethora of mocktail choices! Oof, my rating started with 5 stars in 2018 to 3 stars in 2020, and they're losing another star in 2026. I miss the 5 star days. I keep wanting to love this place, and there are things that I still enjoy - specifically, the vibe, the friendly staff, and the potential of the menu. Unfortunately, the quality of the actual food just keeps declining. Last night, we arrived right at 4pm to take advantage of the HH menu. We ordered the Popcorn Chicken and Wonton Nachos of the HH menu, and the Crispy Rice Salad (Nam Khau), Vietnamese Crepe (Banh Xeo), Chicken Laab Lettuce Wraps, Shrimp & Perilla Rolls and the Balinese Chicken Thai off the regular menu. Generally, I love the idea of all these items. Unfortunately, all of the food tasted old and heavy. All of the fried items tasted like they were fried in old oil, making the dishes greasy. The herbs that came with the crepe were wilted like they were sitting out. And, nothing tasted made to order and came out luke warm. Nothing tasted fresh. The interior is going for pacific coastal vibes with fun colors, bountiful foliage and tiki decor. We started with the English Pea Wontons which provides a few bites of wontons soaked in the delicious Tom Kha coconut broth. Next, the Fried Brussel Sprouts with the sweet and savory dressing and pork belly is a new personal favorite take on the popular side dish. Came here for a birthday dinner and was impressed from the moment I walked in. The atmosphere was inviting and lively, and the staff were on their A-game throughout. Our group shared several appetizers, some favorite being the Adobo ribs, coconut shrimp toast (so much so that we ordered it twice) and tofu. The song wat slushie was another table favorite! My family and I ventured to Hai Hai after numerous recommendations for our large family dinner. We made reservations a few weeks in advance for our party of 11 and they were great about getting us seated quickly and in a private space with heaters. Our waitress was lovely and helpful. We ordered so many good dishes including the spring rolls, water fern cakes, salt and pepper tofu (several dishes), grilled shrimp skewers, chicken laab lettuce wraps, thai wok-tossed cabbage, vietnamese crepes and so much more. Everything was delicious and flavorful. Love the fun twists on southeast asian dishes. Specifically loved the thai wok-tossed cabbage and the crepes. The tofu was absolutely amazing as well. The sauce it came with was spectular. I liked the chicken laab lettuce wraps but they were a lot saltier than I had expected. We appreciated the kids menus - our kids enjoyed several plates including the rice bowl and the coconut chicken. Our family ordered various desserts as well including the vietnamese tiramusu, the guava lime posset, almond-lychee che (my personal favorite- i grew up eating similar dishes like this for dessert), and the warm bread pudding. When they mention the level of spice, they aren't kidding!!!! My husband and I shared the beef rendang and cauliflower. Both dishes were incredible, but the beef dish.... Chefs kiss! Wow! I cannot rave enough about this place. It's officially top rated on my "best restaurants to eat at as a vegan" list (I mean, it's not entirely vegan, but has a good amount of vegan options). I came here on a Friday night with a friend who is gluten-free. We arrived around 5:30 or so, and even though we didn't have a reservation, they asked us if we were okay sitting at a table which we had to be gone from at 7pm. This was fine by us, so we got seated right away. Our server was kind & attentive, even though it was a busy night. We decided to get everything to share, and got two starters & a main, ordering in two rounds. The salt & pepper tofu was incredible--whatever that sauce is that they have it (artistically) piled atop, it is pure gold. I didn't think they could top that, but then we tried the balinese cauliflower. Wow! I could not get enough of that one--and I'm normally kind of luke-warm on cauliflower dishes. Finally, we got the vegan version of the Vietnamese crepe. This was good, but didn't quite match the perfection of the first two dishes. It was a little confusing, because they told us that we should eat the crepe cut up & inside of the lettuce, but they only gave us around 3 lettuce leaves, which was only enough to eat around half of the crepe that way. It didn't matter too much, because even just having it with a fork & dipping in the sauces was good as well. Overall, highly, highly recommend! I visited for an evening out with coworkers. this place is Tropical cocktail lounge meets Minneapolis neighborhood hangout! I don't get over to high high that often because I'm in Saint Paulette and it's hard to cross the river. And I'm always a little bit worried about the crowd here. But even on the Saturday night we were able to find a couple spots at the bar. I am so glad we did. I love this place. Stunning with a cocktails, they have quite a few takes on traditional cocktails. I tried their pho inspired Negroni. I love Negroni, and generally when people try and do their own spin on them they're terrible. But this one seem to capture the elements of a Negroni yet it really stood on its own. It was a really good drink. We started with the salt and pepper tofu. My companion wished there would've been more salt on it. I really liked it, but I don't have as much to compare to. We also split the sweet potato dish and the green curry barramundi. The green curry was one of the best I've had in a long while. I'm not sure if it was the lime or one of the other fresh herbs, but it was so flavorful and it hit all of the right notes in a fresh way, that I rarely experience at most Thai restaurants. The sweet potato and peppers were also terrific. I just loved everything about this meal. I will say the staff was super helpful and it really is just such a cute location. Best food I had in Minneapolis. The James Beard award is well deserved. I went through almost the entire appetizer list. The thing that wasn't that impressive -- shrimp toast. What I liked most was pairing the chicken laab and some sticky rice. Hits like homemade from someone who knows what they're doing. Other standouts -- the ribs. Falls off the bone. Don't miss the dumplings... and definitely save room for dessert. Drinks have a good twist and themed flavors to make it interesting. This place was so insanely good and so innovative I'm just in AWE right now!! The decor is gorgeous - the restaurant is decked out in greens and hanging ephemera. Our waiter was the nicest guy - asked him for recs and he was so detailed about every explanation. We started with the sweet corn wontons - oh my goodness!!! The sweet corn with cream corn puree, the lemongrass infused tom yum broth, the grilled corn bits, the thinly wrapped wontons... I was actually insanely obsessed with this. The creamy corn inside complimented the tangy soup perfectly!! I was under the impression this would be like a fried crab Rangoon which I LOVE, but this was infinitely better. We also tried the pork belly and shrimp Vietnamese crepe, which was TO DIE FOR!! At the risk of sounding like a robotic food influencer LOL! The flour crepe was not super thin but stayed crispy for a long time, the fillings and variety of herbs (basil, mint, cilantro, etc) combined with everything else made the perfect bite. You chop up the crepe, wrap it in lettuce, then dip in that fish sauce. The Balinese chicken thigh was honestly a bit dry especially for chicken thigh, but the coconut cream and the rice made is sooo satisfying. I was just ok with the macerated kale and bean sprout salad, though it did add a tangy and crunchy note to the dish. The piece of crispy chicken skin was fun to chew too! We couldn't resist dessert and got the warm bread pudding and almond and lychee Che. The bread pudding was soo crispy on the outside but so moist on the inside, but that dollop of crème fraiche was wayyyyy too much. The end of our plate was just a whole creamy mess. I usually love unique flavors, but some of what we got was just hard to eat. The fried chicken was very dry and disappointing since it came highly recommended. Just went here for the first time and really loved the unique entrees and presentation. The service was really quick on the weekday that we went and all the staff were accommodating and friendly. The bonus was the free parking lot! There's also plenty of neighborhood street parking nearby. We had a large group with toddlers and I felt like the place was very family friendly and sweet. MENU REVAMP! We were lucky enough to dine here a few days after a menu switch, so if you have not been to Hai Hai in a while, come on back and check it out! Who needs paintings when you have plants? This is my preferred mode of decor, and Hai Hai does it beautifully. You feel like you are sitting in a cozy jungle in this Southeast Asian restaurant. Our cocktails were all fun, and there were several on the menu I was interested in trying. I got the Bestest Life and the Tour Bus Tales and enjoyed both, thought the flavor was stronger in the Bestest Life. For my main, I ordered the pan seared- sea bass with green curry and it was delicious! (but watch out for the tiny sprinkle of hot pepper). The only reason this gets 4.5 stars and not a full five was because I could have eaten more. I would suggest ordering an appetizer along with your main course, depending on what your order. The two of us who ordered the sea bass with green curry ate every bite, and were looking for more, and the two people who ordered the Hanoi Sticky rice had a little left over. The desert was actually the best thing out of the whole meal. I am obsessed with their bread pudding with pandan (yes, it's green). The crispy flavor, the melty umami and the hint of banana (I don't even normally like banana. It was THAT good). My friends enjoyed their tiramisu and dessert cocktails, but holy cow that bread pudding. There is a small parking lot next to the building, but I parked on the street (for free) as it was full. I made a reservation after learning this restaurant won a James Beard Award, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The Southeast Asian street-food-inspired dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavor. I dined on the tropical-themed patio, which was vibrant, fun, and surrounded by live plants and landscaping stones--such a unique atmosphere. I didn't see the interior, so I can't comment on that. The restaurant is dog-friendly, but only on the patio. Since the seating area is built on landscape rocks, it's not the most comfortable surface for pets, so I recommend bringing a blanket for your fur baby to sit or lie on. Service was wonderful. Our server was incredibly sweet and even tried to befriend my anxious pup with a piece of chicken skin. He didn't eat it at the restaurant, but he devoured it at home! We were lucky to find spots in the bar area (glad they allow walk-ins). I really liked the selection of cocktails. Glad they have approachable non snooty drinks, like some bars these days (full of bitters and manly ingredient pairings ). I got the Next Up with vodka and really enjoyed it but would try it with rum next time. Ok, now to the food: the spring pea wonton dish was my favorite I've had in a long time! So i was in town for work and was told about this place so of course i had to fire up the Yelp App and check it out. The food looks amazing and the reviews were just as good, so decided to give it a try. We had reservations for 8pm, but arrived at 630, we sat at the bar, so glad we did, we sat by two young ladies and we all hit it off. We ordered the Shrimp Toast, that was amazing!!! Highly recommended it. We also has the fried Brussels Sprouts and again amazing!!!!! I had the Port shoulder and my buddy had the Sea Bass, that was incredible!! The portions are perfect to share. We both had an Old Fashion to drink. This was place was soo busy, I'm happy we sat at the bar. Very bright and flavorful. Tocino Grilled beef - I didn't eat any of this as I don't eat beef but it looked amazing and a hearty portion! We got an array of items from the starters menu which included Salt & Pepper Fried Tofu (10/10: Toasted rice powder, lime leaf tofu sauce, Thai chili), Malaysian Fried Shrimp (9/10: Buttermilk-dredged & fried shrimp, Malaysian curry spice, fried curry leaves, red onion, ginger-sambal aioli), Tocino Grilled Beef (100/10: Grilled boneless short rib in sweet & savory Filipino tocino marinade, atchara pickled veg, fermented fresno cane vinegar, sticky rice), and Chicken Laab Lettuce Wraps (8/10: Ground chicken, lime, fish sauce, lemongrass, herbs, toasted rice, chili, baby gem lettuce, cucumber, sesame-shrimp chips). Everything was excellent, I loved the Asian flavors, everything worked so well together and was so savory. My favorite was the Tocino, classic Filipino flavors reminded me of my time in San Diego with my pinoy coworkers and their delicious food. Tocino is close to my heart! During the day there's plenty of light throughout the restaurant, at night it's very dimly lit. The noise level is pretty high as well, I had to shout across the table so that my friend could hear what I was saying. The acoustics of the restaurant aren't great, but the vibe and aesthetic is wonderful! I would gladly come back to Hai Hai any time! read more

This place is a vibe. Super colorful inside, tons of plants, excellent layout of a space. The service was fantastic. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and came with good recommendations. The food - AMAZING. Probably my favorite food experience in Minnesota. We ordered family style, sharing between 4 people. Spring rolls: a perfect way to start the meal. They each had a crispy eggroll skin inside, which I loved. The sauce was also better than your traditional peanut sauce. Fried Brussels sprouts: I love Brussel sprouts, so I knew I'd like this. Lots of crispy cubes of pork belly mixed in, which was a nice bonus. Hanoi sticky rice: the density of this rice was perfect. Loads of pork floss, sausage, pickled veggies, crispy garlic, and other stuff to mix in. Top it off with their sauce, and you've got yourself a solid meal. This was probably my favorite at the table. Malaysian fried shrimp: large battered and fried shrimp with crispy basil leaves. It reminded me of popcorn chicken from my favorite boba shop back home. The sauce it came with was fantastic. Def recommend. Lettuce wraps: lettuce wraps, shrimp chips, larb - had a spicy kick that I wasn't expecting but enjoyed! Balinese chicken plate: coconut rice with kale, grilled chicken thigh, and veggies. If you don't like coconut, don't get this. The coconut flavor is v prominent. Neede a gluten-free/friendly place to meet a friend, and Hai Hai was suggested closeby to where we were heading. This place was excellent! First and foremost, they do have a parking lot on the back of the restaurant, which is very convenient. Walking in, got hit with the scent of evrything cooking and smelled amazing. Made me hungry just standing there. The space itself is kind of a fun island decor. I had the cauliflower, which was delicious. Had a lovely heat and the coconut sauce balanced it great. Drinks were also good and got some tiramisu to take home for later. My friend also was very happy that most items were gluten-free and the things that weren't were kept separate, so she didn't have to worry about an allergy breakout. This place was so good. The space is nice. It has a lot of plans and he feels tropical. There is also a nice looking patio, but we didn't see it outside. The food was great, so full of flavor. We shared an appetizer, a salad and an entry and we had a couple of drinks each which were also very nice and refreshing. I cannot remember what we had and tried to look at the menu but seems like it changes quite a bit. Our server was great and kept our water refilled. But it seemed like empty cocktail glasses sat on the table for a while, and even when our server came by a couple of times, they didn't clear them. Not sure if that's just how they do things, but it was the only small issue. read more
