The interior is going for pacific coastal vibes with fun colors, bountiful foliage and tiki decor. We started with the English Pea Wontons which provides a few bites of wontons soaked in the delicious Tom Kha coconut broth. Next, the Fried Brussel Sprouts with the sweet and savory dressing and pork belly is a new personal favorite take on the popular side dish. The Beef Rendang was a delightful mix of spice, herbs, coconut, and tamarind. The beef was tender and the broth was perfectly rich! Hai Hai definitely provides a twist to SE Asian cuisine. But to me, that twist was so far removed from actual SE Asian cuisine that instead of a unique experience compared to my usual home meal, it felt more like a subpar one. Instead of tasting the work of a Vietnamese chef who strives to set herself apart, it was more like eating the work of a Westerner who traveled once to SE Asian then returned home to replicate the meals and drinks without knowing the original recipe. That being said, I'm only taking one star off because to be fair, Hai Hai never claims to provide authentic SE Asian cuisine. The restaurant itself was absolutely beautiful, and the staff were friendly and professional. We were there Friday night, and the restaurant was packed, but our waitress Alex still checked in on us regularly, and we didn't have to wait too long for the food. I will personally never return to Hai Hai, but I'm not trying to ridicule it. The restaurant was packed, so clearly they are doing a good job. I'm only leaving this review here to forewarn fellow SE Asians that Hai Hai was not created for us or really for anyone who has been to SE Asia. read more

My family and I ventured to Hai Hai after numerous recommendations for our large family dinner. We made reservations a few weeks in advance for our party of 11 and they were great about getting us seated quickly and in a private space with heaters. Our waitress was lovely and helpful. We ordered so many good dishes including the spring rolls, water fern cakes, salt and pepper tofu (several dishes), grilled shrimp skewers, chicken laab lettuce wraps, thai wok-tossed cabbage, vietnamese crepes and so much more. Everything was delicious and flavorful. Love the fun twists on southeast asian dishes. Specifically loved the thai wok-tossed cabbage and the crepes. The tofu was absolutely amazing as well. The sauce it came with was spectular. I liked the chicken laab lettuce wraps but they were a lot saltier than I had expected. We appreciated the kids menus - our kids enjoyed several plates including the rice bowl and the coconut chicken. Our family ordered various desserts as well including the vietnamese tiramusu, the guava lime posset, almond-lychee che (my personal favorite- i grew up eating similar dishes like this for dessert), and the warm bread pudding. Wow! I cannot rave enough about this place. It's officially top rated on my "best restaurants to eat at as a vegan" list (I mean, it's not entirely vegan, but has a good amount of vegan options). I came here on a Friday night with a friend who is gluten-free. We arrived around 5:30 or so, and even though we didn't have a reservation, they asked us if we were okay sitting at a table which we had to be gone from at 7pm. This was fine by us, so we got seated right away. Our server was kind & attentive, even though it was a busy night. We decided to get everything to share, and got two starters & a main, ordering in two rounds. The salt & pepper tofu was incredible--whatever that sauce is that they have it (artistically) piled atop, it is pure gold. I didn't think they could top that, but then we tried the balinese cauliflower. Wow! I could not get enough of that one--and I'm normally kind of luke-warm on cauliflower dishes. Finally, we got the vegan version of the Vietnamese crepe. This was good, but didn't quite match the perfection of the first two dishes. It was a little confusing, because they told us that we should eat the crepe cut up & inside of the lettuce, but they only gave us around 3 lettuce leaves, which was only enough to eat around half of the crepe that way. It didn't matter too much, because even just having it with a fork & dipping in the sauces was good as well. Overall, highly, highly recommend! I don't get over to high high that often because I'm in Saint Paulette and it's hard to cross the river. And I'm always a little bit worried about the crowd here. But even on the Saturday night we were able to find a couple spots at the bar. I am so glad we did. I love this place. Stunning with a cocktails, they have quite a few takes on traditional cocktails. I tried their pho inspired Negroni. I love Negroni, and generally when people try and do their own spin on them they're terrible. But this one seem to capture the elements of a Negroni yet it really stood on its own. It was a really good drink. We started with the salt and pepper tofu. My companion wished there would've been more salt on it. I really liked it, but I don't have as much to compare to. We also split the sweet potato dish and the green curry barramundi. The green curry was one of the best I've had in a long while. I'm not sure if it was the lime or one of the other fresh herbs, but it was so flavorful and it hit all of the right notes in a fresh way, that I rarely experience at most Thai restaurants. This place was so insanely good and so innovative I'm just in AWE right now!! The decor is gorgeous - the restaurant is decked out in greens and hanging ephemera. Our waiter was the nicest guy - asked him for recs and he was so detailed about every explanation. We started with the sweet corn wontons - oh my goodness!!! The sweet corn with cream corn puree, the lemongrass infused tom yum broth, the grilled corn bits, the thinly wrapped wontons... I was actually insanely obsessed with this. The creamy corn inside complimented the tangy soup perfectly!! I was under the impression this would be like a fried crab Rangoon which I LOVE, but this was infinitely better. We also tried the pork belly and shrimp Vietnamese crepe, which was TO DIE FOR!! At the risk of sounding like a robotic food influencer LOL! The flour crepe was not super thin but stayed crispy for a long time, the fillings and variety of herbs (basil, mint, cilantro, etc) combined with everything else made the perfect bite. You chop up the crepe, wrap it in lettuce, then dip in that fish sauce. The Balinese chicken thigh was honestly a bit dry especially for chicken thigh, but the coconut cream and the rice made is sooo satisfying. I was just ok with the macerated kale and bean sprout salad, though it did add a tangy and crunchy note to the dish. The piece of crispy chicken skin was fun to chew too! We couldn't resist dessert and got the warm bread pudding and almond and lychee Che. The bread pudding was soo crispy on the outside but so moist on the inside, but that dollop of crème fraiche was wayyyyy too much. The end of our plate was just a whole creamy mess. Just went here for the first time and really loved the unique entrees and presentation. The service was really quick on the weekday that we went and all the staff were accommodating and friendly. The bonus was the free parking lot! There's also plenty of neighborhood street parking nearby. We had a large group with toddlers and I felt like the place was very family friendly and sweet. No one made us feel like we were a bother with our kids which is always a plus to me! :) We ordered several items for appetizers: salt and pepper fried tofu, eggplant sambal dip, Malaysian popcorn chicken, Coconut shrimp toast, and lotus ginger and shrimp salad. MENU REVAMP! We were lucky enough to dine here a few days after a menu switch, so if you have not been to Hai Hai in a while, come on back and check it out! Who needs paintings when you have plants? This is my preferred mode of decor, and Hai Hai does it beautifully. You feel like you are sitting in a cozy jungle in this Southeast Asian restaurant. Our cocktails were all fun, and there were several on the menu I was interested in trying. I got the Bestest Life and the Tour Bus Tales and enjoyed both, thought the flavor was stronger in the Bestest Life. For my main, I ordered the pan seared- sea bass with green curry and it was delicious! (but watch out for the tiny sprinkle of hot pepper). The only reason this gets 4.5 stars and not a full five was because I could have eaten more. I would suggest ordering an appetizer along with your main course, depending on what your order. The two of us who ordered the sea bass with green curry ate every bite, and were looking for more, and the two people who ordered the Hanoi Sticky rice had a little left over. The desert was actually the best thing out of the whole meal. I am obsessed with their bread pudding with pandan (yes, it's green). The crispy flavor, the melty umami and the hint of banana (I don't even normally like banana. It was THAT good). My friends enjoyed their tiramisu and dessert cocktails, but holy cow that bread pudding. There is a small parking lot next to the building, but I parked on the street (for free) as it was full. I made a reservation after learning this restaurant won a James Beard Award, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The Southeast Asian street-food-inspired dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavor. I dined on the tropical-themed patio, which was vibrant, fun, and surrounded by live plants and landscaping stones--such a unique atmosphere. I didn't see the interior, so I can't comment on that. The restaurant is dog-friendly, but only on the patio. Since the seating area is built on landscape rocks, it's not the most comfortable surface for pets, so I recommend bringing a blanket for your fur baby to sit or lie on. Service was wonderful. Our server was incredibly sweet and even tried to befriend my anxious pup with a piece of chicken skin. He didn't eat it at the restaurant, but he devoured it at home! We were lucky to find spots in the bar area (glad they allow walk-ins). I really liked the selection of cocktails. Glad they have approachable non snooty drinks, like some bars these days (full of bitters and manly ingredient pairings ). I got the Next Up with vodka and really enjoyed it but would try it with rum next time. Ok, now to the food: the spring pea wonton dish was my favorite I've had in a long time! So i was in town for work and was told about this place so of course i had to fire up the Yelp App and check it out. The food looks amazing and the reviews were just as good, so decided to give it a try. We had reservations for 8pm, but arrived at 630, we sat at the bar, so glad we did, we sat by two young ladies and we all hit it off. We ordered the Shrimp Toast, that was amazing!!! Highly recommended it. We also has the fried Brussels Sprouts and again amazing!!!!! I had the Port shoulder and my buddy had the Sea Bass, that was incredible!! The portions are perfect to share. Very bright and flavorful. Tocino Grilled beef - I didn't eat any of this as I don't eat beef but it looked amazing and a hearty portion! It was under the "snacks and starters" but it came out looking like an entree. He enjoyed it and loved the flavors. Overall, this is an amazing place to come and eat. The bar has a separate menu, so stop in multiple times. I recommend making a reservation if coming for dinner. Parking is mainly street parking and I had to problem finding a spot. We got an array of items from the starters menu which included Salt & Pepper Fried Tofu (10/10: Toasted rice powder, lime leaf tofu sauce, Thai chili), Malaysian Fried Shrimp (9/10: Buttermilk-dredged & fried shrimp, Malaysian curry spice, fried curry leaves, red onion, ginger-sambal aioli), Tocino Grilled Beef (100/10: Grilled boneless short rib in sweet & savory Filipino tocino marinade, atchara pickled veg, fermented fresno cane vinegar, sticky rice), and Chicken Laab Lettuce Wraps (8/10: Ground chicken, lime, fish sauce, lemongrass, herbs, toasted rice, chili, baby gem lettuce, cucumber, sesame-shrimp chips). Everything was excellent, I loved the Asian flavors, everything worked so well together and was so savory. My favorite was the Tocino, classic Filipino flavors reminded me of my time in San Diego with my pinoy coworkers and their delicious food. Tocino is close to my heart! They each had a crispy eggroll skin inside, which I loved. The sauce was also better than your traditional peanut sauce. Fried Brussels sprouts: I love Brussel sprouts, so I knew I'd like this. Lots of crispy cubes of pork belly mixed in, which was a nice bonus. Hanoi sticky rice: the density of this rice was perfect. Loads of pork floss, sausage, pickled veggies, crispy garlic, and other stuff to mix in. Top it off with their sauce, and you've got yourself a solid meal. This was probably my favorite at the table. Malaysian fried shrimp: large battered and fried shrimp with crispy basil leaves. It reminded me of popcorn chicken from my favorite boba shop back home. The sauce it came with was fantastic. Def recommend. Lettuce wraps: lettuce wraps, shrimp chips, larb - had a spicy kick that I wasn't expecting but enjoyed! First and foremost, they do have a parking lot on the back of the restaurant, which is very convenient. Walking in, got hit with the scent of evrything cooking and smelled amazing. Made me hungry just standing there. The space itself is kind of a fun island decor. I had the cauliflower, which was delicious. Had a lovely heat and the coconut sauce balanced it great. Drinks were also good and got some tiramisu to take home for later. My friend also was very happy that most items were gluten-free and the things that weren't were kept separate, so she didn't have to worry about an allergy breakout. I cannot remember what we had and tried to look at the menu but seems like it changes quite a bit. Our server was great and kept our water refilled. This a small, cozy and intimate restaurant. The service was attentive and speedy and people came around often to pick up plates. We tried different dishes and enjoyed most of them. Our favorites were the rib and fried shrimp appetizers. The flavors were wonderful and savory. The spring rolls were just okay. The noodle soup was a bit underwhelming, and the noodles had more of a pasta consistency than noodles, so it wasn't our favorite. The pork shoulder and beef entrees were very yummy too. The beef has some kick, but it is a very pleasant spice level. The drinks were tasty and unique. They have their own vodka soda "seltzers" and they are good! We had such a fabulous time at Hai Hai. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with a jungle-like atmosphere and some of the kindest staff I've interacted with in a restaurant in a long time! For starters, we had the spring rolls and the chicken laab lettuce wrap, both of which were absolutely tasty. For a main, I had the Vietnamese crepe, which was a huge portion size and also very good. For anyone with food allergies, this restaurant was very accommodating - my dining partner had celiac and they had many gluten free and gluten free friendly options, both of which were very appreciated. Fun happy hour spot. Love the feeling of sitting at this bar and enjoying a panda punch with in house made garnishes of dried fruit. Staff were attentive and fun. I wish there were more gf food choices on the happy hour menu. The chicken bites were basically gf battered chicken chunks with a spicy dipping sauce. I could have eaten 3 of these they were so good. The shrimp crackers and with spicy chili dip was unremarkable. The crackers were puffy and crunchy, not a lot of flavor. The chili dip was hot and tasted good, but the appetizer was unsatisfying. I had a lovely dinner with friends here and the service was so wonderful. The set up was a little tight but the lighting and vibe felt really nice. I got the BA drink and it was really minty and refreshing. We started with the wontons and they were spicy and so smooth! For my main, I got the Hanoi Sticky Rice and my partner got the Balinese Chicken. The sticky rice bowl was really good and flavorful and well balanced once I mixed the bowl. The chicken was overall good, but was a bit too rich with a lot of coconut milk. I love coconut, but it was overdone. We got the tiramisu for dessert and it wasn't my favorite, but my partner did like it. We also got the milk bread pudding, which was pretty good, but a bit too sweet for my liking. Hai Hai has a beautiful, jungle-like interior with lots of plants and bright colors. They have an interesting and creative drink menu, especially if you enjoy tiki-style cocktails! They've made some updates to their menu - I recently tried the eggplant sambal dip for the first time and really liked the bright, lime-forwars flavor. The salt and pepper tofu is one of my go-to dishes, it also uses kaffir lime leaves. I do wish there were a few more vegetarian mains - my parter loves the Hanoi sticky rice, but it just isn't as good without the pork floss and sausage. read more

I finally made it to Hai Hai tonight, after wanting to try it for a while. Friday night at 7:30, it was packed! We were glad we made a reservation. The restaurant itself is full of plants and fun decor. It was cozy! The bathrooms were also very clean. We had the Spring rolls, Pork ribs Ticino, Fried Brussel sprouts, and Beef rendang. Spring rolls- delicious, different than I've had other places, loved the warm sauce that came with it. Pork ribs- outstanding. Fall off the bone. Only complaint is the serving size is so small! I could've had many more haha. Fried Brussel sprouts- soooo good! I love Brussels to begin with but wow the tangy acidic flavor really worked here. Beef rendang- very spicy. The meat was juicy & tender, and the coconut rice was perfectly cooked. Lastly, our server Kelly accommodated my peanut/nut allergy so well!
