I was in Minneapolis for a work trip and found this spot while searching for some Asian food nearby and I am SOOOO glad I did. First of all, the restaurant is super cute. It has this tropical and airy vibe with a bunch of plants everywhere. It's partially open air with indoor seating too. I sat at the bar and they had all the windows open and the whole atmosphere was just perfect. It's a Vietnamese fusion spot and apparently a James Beard Award winner which I can definitely understand after eating here. To start the bartender recommended the shrimp toast so I ordered that along with the sweet corn wontons. The shrimp toast was SO interesting!!! It was like a shrimp mousse on toast. I honestly loved it but fair warning, it was reaaaally spicy with the fresh jalapeños on top. Still so good though I pushed through. The sweet corn wontons were AMAZING. They came in this super flavorful broth that I drank by itself after. For dessert, I tried their version of mango sticky rice, which was probably one of the most interesting things I had. They don't actually use rice and instead use this jell-o??? but somehow you still get all the flavors of mango sticky rice. So different and SO delicious. My fav of the night! For drinks I tried with the Life Aquatic which was a mezcal cocktail with cucumber and it was smoky, refreshing and overall just amazing. Then I asked for a lychee martini which wasn't even on the menu but they attempted to make one for me anyway. 10/10 execution because it was also amazing! I was genuinely impressed by everything...the food, drinks, atmosphere and the service. They even gave me a little taste of their slushies to try at the end which were super tasty too. We decided on Hai Hai for Independence Day dinner as it was one of the few restaurants on our to-try list that was open. While we made a reservation a couple of weeks in advance for an earlier 5PM dinner, it wasn't busy at all at that time. We easily could have gone without. Hai Hai is a really large restaurant, far larger than I anticipated, with plenty of spaces on the back patio, a large bar area, and a lot of seating indoors up in front. We were led to one of the indoor tables which we appreciated immensely given the heat outside. We found the service to be prompt and efficient. The food came out fast, within 10 minutes or so. They must be really efficient in the kitchen. Hat Yai Chicken ($23) - I've eaten this dish several times in the past, but always bone in. This one, on the other hand, includes two pieces of fried boneless thigh, mostly cleaned and stripped of skin. I say mostly because one thigh still had quite a large chunk of cartilage attached. Unfortunately removing the skin also removes a protective layer to help the chicken from being drying out. And overfried this is, making the meat somewhat tough and stringy, although there's just a bit of intermuscular chicken fat to moisten things up a tad. The hard fry does allow the breading to develop into a robust crunch, however, and with the fried garlic, fried curry leaves, and sliced Thai chili on top, makes a flavorful and texturally interesting bite. The chicken is served on top of a piece of roti. I assume it's homemade since it's on the denser side of things and is floury, without that glass shatteringly crisp skin of some other roti varieties I've had. There's a dip of red curry on the side, which is aromatic and flavorful, sweet with coconut milk to start, then the aroma of curry leaf and spices, and finally a small bit of heat to warm the mouth. It's strangely served lukewarm instead of hot. Finally, there's a small pile of home made pickles. Nice to eat, but the rest of the dish isn't fatty, oily, or heavy enough to really require them. Then again, it's nice to have as a palette refresher between bites of the flavorful chicken and curry. (4/5) Vietnamese Crepe, Pork & Shrimp ($23) - I've only eaten banh xeo once before and I found it to be a greasy, soggy mess. This one is anything but. The pancake stays completely crisp, almost shatteringly so, even on the bottom surface facing the plate. Of course it's still a messy dish to eat, due to having to cut it up to eat in lettuce wraps, mixed with herbs. Four large lettuce leaves are included, along with cilantro and some (holy?) basil. The banh xeo s not easy to cut with the provided butter knife, so I asked for the steak knife - still not easy to cut! Inside the crisp crepe are several pieces of shrimp, tender and not overcooked at all, a bunch of almost melt-in-the-mouth cubes of pork belly, then a bed of wilted onions, green onions, and bean sprouts. I love how the bean sprouts are cooked here instead of being raw like in so many Vietnamese dishes. This dish is served with two sauces. One a sweetened fish sauce Nước Chấm. For some reason I taste some fruity elements but I could be imagining things. The other is a barely spicy sriracha-ish sauce. (5/5) Visiting Hai Hai was definitely a good choice for dinner. Hai Hai is a bright, colorful, tropical gem. It's the perfect summer dinner spot! We ate on the charmingly decorated patio. Even the dishes on which the food is served are thematic and beautiful. The menu has a lot of unique items and everything we had was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed my Vietnamese crepe. The evening started great. Upon arriving, the parking lot was closed due to a medical emergency, but there was tons of street parking. As you enter this establishment, it reminds you of a tropical oasis, and right away I started singing the Beach Boys. We were seated, and Lily was our server. We started with the Bird of Paradise drinks, and it was tasty and potent. Then came the very good spring rolls. The Ribs were divine and fell off the bone and were marinated in all types of goodness. The poolside in Koh Samui and who can forget the Luna Duna to go with the sticky rice and the crispy rice salad and pork belly. We continued drinking the night away and enjoying good food. Oof, my rating started with 5 stars in 2018 to 3 stars in 2020, and they're losing another star in 2026. I miss the 5 star days. I keep wanting to love this place, and there are things that I still enjoy - specifically, the vibe, the friendly staff, and the potential of the menu. Unfortunately, the quality of the actual food just keeps declining. Last night, we arrived right at 4pm to take advantage of the HH menu. We ordered the Popcorn Chicken and Wonton Nachos of the HH menu, and the Crispy Rice Salad (Nam Khau), Vietnamese Crepe (Banh Xeo), Chicken Laab Lettuce Wraps, Shrimp & Perilla Rolls and the Balinese Chicken Thai off the regular menu. Generally, I love the idea of all these items. Unfortunately, all of the food tasted old and heavy. All of the fried items tasted like they were fried in old oil, making the dishes greasy. The herbs that came with the crepe were wilted like they were sitting out. And, nothing tasted made to order and came out luke warm. Nothing tasted fresh. This restaurant is highly rated and it deserves it. My wife and I split three dishes and had a very satisfying meal. Food: My wife had the "Beach Day Energy Cocktail" ($9) from the Happy Hour menu (Sunday through Thursday, 4:00 to 5:30 pm). It consists of Dragon fruit vodka, lychee, Cappelletti, lime, and mint. She said it was quite refreshing and tasty. We then had the Adobo Pork Ribs ($13). This was the highlight dish for us and it was fantastic and utterly cravable!. It was sticky, sweet, tangy and just all around yummy. Our next dish was the Thai-Style Viet Crepe Salad from the Happy Hour menu ($8). This consisted of a turmeric-coconut nan-style bread, with bean sprouts, cucumber, onion, chili, and nuac cham sauce. It was good, but I'm not sure the bread paired well with the salad and it was perhaps a bit too spicy for us. Next we had the Hat Yai Fried Chicken with curry dipping sauce ($23). We enjoyed this, and it was a good variation of Korean Fried Chicken. Finally, to celebrate my birthday, we had an excellent Tiramisu. This often is very dry, but Hai Hai's version was superb. The interior is going for pacific coastal vibes with fun colors, bountiful foliage and tiki decor. Next, the Fried Brussel Sprouts with the sweet and savory dressing and pork belly is a new personal favorite take on the popular side dish. Two of us went to Hai Hai the other night and had a great experience! We started off with the Bun Cha Lettuce Wraps and the Adobo Pork Ribs. The ribs were PHENOMENAL!!! Highly recommend!! For the vegetable we got the Fried Brussels Sprouts were amazing as well. The flavor that was in this dish was amazing. Our main course was the Balinese Chicken Thigh. It is very coconut forward, which was not my favorite thing. It is my fault for not reading the description, but I felt like the coconut cream sauce on the rice really overpowered the dish. Came here for a birthday dinner and was impressed from the moment I walked in. The atmosphere was inviting and lively, and the staff were on their A-game throughout. Our group shared several appetizers, some favorite being the Adobo ribs, coconut shrimp toast (so much so that we ordered it twice) and tofu. The song wat slushie was another table favorite! My family and I ventured to Hai Hai after numerous recommendations for our large family dinner. We made reservations a few weeks in advance for our party of 11 and they were great about getting us seated quickly and in a private space with heaters. Our waitress was lovely and helpful. We ordered so many good dishes including the spring rolls, water fern cakes, salt and pepper tofu (several dishes), grilled shrimp skewers, chicken laab lettuce wraps, thai wok-tossed cabbage, vietnamese crepes and so much more. Everything was delicious and flavorful. Love the fun twists on southeast asian dishes. Specifically loved the thai wok-tossed cabbage and the crepes. The tofu was absolutely amazing as well. The sauce it came with was spectular. I liked the chicken laab lettuce wraps but they were a lot saltier than I had expected. We appreciated the kids menus - our kids enjoyed several plates including the rice bowl and the coconut chicken. Our family ordered various desserts as well including the vietnamese tiramusu, the guava lime posset, almond-lychee che (my personal favorite- i grew up eating similar dishes like this for dessert), and the warm bread pudding. Wow! I cannot rave enough about this place. It's officially top rated on my "best restaurants to eat at as a vegan" list (I mean, it's not entirely vegan, but has a good amount of vegan options). I came here on a Friday night with a friend who is gluten-free. We arrived around 5:30 or so, and even though we didn't have a reservation, they asked us if we were okay sitting at a table which we had to be gone from at 7pm. This was fine by us, so we got seated right away. Our server was kind & attentive, even though it was a busy night. We decided to get everything to share, and got two starters & a main, ordering in two rounds. The salt & pepper tofu was incredible--whatever that sauce is that they have it (artistically) piled atop, it is pure gold. I didn't think they could top that, but then we tried the balinese cauliflower. Wow! I could not get enough of that one--and I'm normally kind of luke-warm on cauliflower dishes. Finally, we got the vegan version of the Vietnamese crepe. This was good, but didn't quite match the perfection of the first two dishes. It was a little confusing, because they told us that we should eat the crepe cut up & inside of the lettuce, but they only gave us around 3 lettuce leaves, which was only enough to eat around half of the crepe that way. It didn't matter too much, because even just having it with a fork & dipping in the sauces was good as well. Overall, highly, highly recommend! I don't get over to high high that often because I'm in Saint Paulette and it's hard to cross the river. And I'm always a little bit worried about the crowd here. But even on the Saturday night we were able to find a couple spots at the bar. I am so glad we did. I love this place. Stunning with a cocktails, they have quite a few takes on traditional cocktails. I tried their pho inspired Negroni. I love Negroni, and generally when people try and do their own spin on them they're terrible. But this one seem to capture the elements of a Negroni yet it really stood on its own. It was a really good drink. We started with the salt and pepper tofu. My companion wished there would've been more salt on it. I really liked it, but I don't have as much to compare to. We also split the sweet potato dish and the green curry barramundi. The green curry was one of the best I've had in a long while. I'm not sure if it was the lime or one of the other fresh herbs, but it was so flavorful and it hit all of the right notes in a fresh way, that I rarely experience at most Thai restaurants. It felt like we were an inconvenience. Also, it's 2026 so it's weird when the server dismissively leaves one check without asking how to divide it for a party of six. Pretty weird. This place was so insanely good and so innovative I'm just in AWE right now!! The decor is gorgeous - the restaurant is decked out in greens and hanging ephemera. Our waiter was the nicest guy - asked him for recs and he was so detailed about every explanation. We started with the sweet corn wontons - oh my goodness!!! The sweet corn with cream corn puree, the lemongrass infused tom yum broth, the grilled corn bits, the thinly wrapped wontons... I was actually insanely obsessed with this. The creamy corn inside complimented the tangy soup perfectly!! I was under the impression this would be like a fried crab Rangoon which I LOVE, but this was infinitely better. We also tried the pork belly and shrimp Vietnamese crepe, which was TO DIE FOR!! At the risk of sounding like a robotic food influencer LOL! The flour crepe was not super thin but stayed crispy for a long time, the fillings and variety of herbs (basil, mint, cilantro, etc) combined with everything else made the perfect bite. You chop up the crepe, wrap it in lettuce, then dip in that fish sauce. The Balinese chicken thigh was honestly a bit dry especially for chicken thigh, but the coconut cream and the rice made is sooo satisfying. I was just ok with the macerated kale and bean sprout salad, though it did add a tangy and crunchy note to the dish. The piece of crispy chicken skin was fun to chew too! We couldn't resist dessert and got the warm bread pudding and almond and lychee Che. The bread pudding was soo crispy on the outside but so moist on the inside, but that dollop of crème fraiche was wayyyyy too much. The end of our plate was just a whole creamy mess. No one made us feel like we were a bother with our kids which is always a plus to me! :) We ordered several items for appetizers: salt and pepper fried tofu, eggplant sambal dip, Malaysian popcorn chicken, Coconut shrimp toast, and lotus ginger and shrimp salad. Great lively spot in the area! They have a small parking lot beside the restaurant which fills up fast, but there is street parking available. There is lots of seating inside with patio and bar seating also available. We came on a Saturday night around 8:45pm and the restaurant was still full and packed! We ordered a cocktail and NA drink and it was delicious. For appetizers we got the Burmese Tea salad which had an amazing balance of flavor and texture. For entrees we got the Balinese Chicken Thigh, the fried rice and the fish. All had good flavor. Definitely a great spot to go and catch up with friends and have dinner! read more

MENU REVAMP! We were lucky enough to dine here a few days after a menu switch, so if you have not been to Hai Hai in a while, come on back and check it out! Who needs paintings when you have plants? This is my preferred mode of decor, and Hai Hai does it beautifully. You feel like you are sitting in a cozy jungle in this Southeast Asian restaurant. Our cocktails were all fun, and there were several on the menu I was interested in trying. I got the Bestest Life and the Tour Bus Tales and enjoyed both, thought the flavor was stronger in the Bestest Life. For my main, I ordered the pan seared- sea bass with green curry and it was delicious! (but watch out for the tiny sprinkle of hot pepper). The only reason this gets 4.5 stars and not a full five was because I could have eaten more. I would suggest ordering an appetizer along with your main course, depending on what your order. The two of us who ordered the sea bass with green curry ate every bite, and were looking for more, and the two people who ordered the Hanoi Sticky rice had a little left over. The desert was actually the best thing out of the whole meal. I am obsessed with their bread pudding with pandan (yes, it's green). The crispy flavor, the melty umami and the hint of banana (I don't even normally like banana. It was THAT good). My friends enjoyed their tiramisu and dessert cocktails, but holy cow that bread pudding. There is a small parking lot next to the building, but I parked on the street (for free) as it was full. Our server was friendly and gave great recommendations for favorite drinks and menu items. The food also came out SUPER fast. I made a reservation after learning this restaurant won a James Beard Award, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The Southeast Asian street-food-inspired dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavor. I dined on the tropical-themed patio, which was vibrant, fun, and surrounded by live plants and landscaping stones--such a unique atmosphere. I didn't see the interior, so I can't comment on that. The restaurant is dog-friendly, but only on the patio. Since the seating area is built on landscape rocks, it's not the most comfortable surface for pets, so I recommend bringing a blanket for your fur baby to sit or lie on. Service was wonderful. Our server was incredibly sweet and even tried to befriend my anxious pup with a piece of chicken skin. He didn't eat it at the restaurant, but he devoured it at home! I really appreciated the thoughtful gesture. I'll definitely be back to try more of their dishes. read more
