    Crispy chicken
    Jon S.

First time here from out of town. Something different to try for dinner even though it's more for drinkers. I ordered crispy chicken. As I said it was different but not my favorite. After I left to go to the park, my stomach started hurting. Whatever it was, I had a reaction to the food. That dinner gave me a stomach ache.

When they mention the level of spice, they aren't kidding!!!! My husband and I shared the beef rendang and cauliflower. Both dishes were incredible, but the beef dish.... Chefs kiss! The dish was savory with a gravy/sauce filled with heat, lemongrass, curry, & coconut milk. The beef must be slow roasted as it melts in your mouth. I'd definitely give the dish a 10/10!

My family and I ventured to Hai Hai after numerous recommendations for our large family dinner. We made reservations a few weeks in advance for our party of 11 and they were great about getting us seated quickly and in a private space with heaters. Our waitress was lovely and helpful. We ordered so many good dishes including the spring rolls, water fern cakes, salt and pepper tofu (several dishes), grilled shrimp skewers, chicken laab lettuce wraps, thai wok-tossed cabbage, vietnamese crepes and so much more. Everything was delicious and flavorful. Love the fun twists on southeast asian dishes. Specifically loved the thai wok-tossed cabbage and the crepes. The tofu was absolutely amazing as well. The sauce it came with was spectular. I liked the chicken laab lettuce wraps but they were a lot saltier than I had expected. We appreciated the kids menus - our kids enjoyed several plates including the rice bowl and the coconut chicken. Our family ordered various desserts as well including the vietnamese tiramusu, the guava lime posset, almond-lychee che (my personal favorite- i grew up eating similar dishes like this for dessert), and the warm bread pudding. Love the twists on these southeast asian flavors. Would recommend to family and friends! Can't wait to come back!

Wow! I cannot rave enough about this place. It's officially top rated on my "best restaurants to eat at as a vegan" list (I mean, it's not entirely vegan, but has a good amount of vegan options). I came here on a Friday night with a friend who is gluten-free. We arrived around 5:30 or so, and even though we didn't have a reservation, they asked us if we were okay sitting at a table which we had to be gone from at 7pm. This was fine by us, so we got seated right away. Our server was kind & attentive, even though it was a busy night. We decided to get everything to share, and got two starters & a main, ordering in two rounds. The salt & pepper tofu was incredible--whatever that sauce is that they have it (artistically) piled atop, it is pure gold. I didn't think they could top that, but then we tried the balinese cauliflower. Wow! I could not get enough of that one--and I'm normally kind of luke-warm on cauliflower dishes. Finally, we got the vegan version of the Vietnamese crepe. This was good, but didn't quite match the perfection of the first two dishes. It was a little confusing, because they told us that we should eat the crepe cut up & inside of the lettuce, but they only gave us around 3 lettuce leaves, which was only enough to eat around half of the crepe that way. It didn't matter too much, because even just having it with a fork & dipping in the sauces was good as well. Overall, highly, highly recommend! I cannot believe that the prices are so reasonable at a place that tastes this delicious!

Great place - it always lives up to its reputation. Friendly servers, Wonderful food (I wish the portions were a little bigger), fun funky atmosphere (although rather dark - couldn't read the menu without my phone flashlight), and fun beer selection. A Nordeast treasure!!

Hai Hai is basically a party for your taste buds. It's Southeast Asian joy in a bowl - and somehow manages to pull off *cool, cozy, and spicy chaos* all at once. I visited for an evening out with coworkers. this place is Tropical cocktail lounge meets Minneapolis neighborhood hangout! Pro tip: come hungry, order the most colorful thing on the menu, and trust that whatever they put in front of you will be delicious! 10/10 would recommend to anyone who likes flavor explosions and Minneapolis evenings that feel way too cool for their zip code. The service was friendly and helpful with ordering. They do have a small parking lot, but there is also a lot of street parking nearby

    Pho-spiced Negroni

I don't get over to high high that often because I'm in Saint Paulette and it's hard to cross the river. And I'm always a little bit worried about the crowd here. But even on the Saturday night we were able to find a couple spots at the bar. I am so glad we did. I love this place. Stunning with a cocktails, they have quite a few takes on traditional cocktails. I tried their pho inspired Negroni. I love Negroni, and generally when people try and do their own spin on them they're terrible. But this one seem to capture the elements of a Negroni yet it really stood on its own. It was a really good drink. We started with the salt and pepper tofu. My companion wished there would've been more salt on it. I really liked it, but I don't have as much to compare to. We also split the sweet potato dish and the green curry barramundi. The green curry was one of the best I've had in a long while. I'm not sure if it was the lime or one of the other fresh herbs, but it was so flavorful and it hit all of the right notes in a fresh way, that I rarely experience at most Thai restaurants. The sweet potato and peppers were also terrific. I just loved everything about this meal. I will say the staff was super helpful and it really is just such a cute location. I love this restaurant.

Best food I had in Minneapolis. The James Beard award is well deserved. I went through almost the entire appetizer list. The thing that wasn't that impressive -- shrimp toast. What I liked most was pairing the chicken laab and some sticky rice. Hits like homemade from someone who knows what they're doing. Other standouts -- the ribs. Falls off the bone. Don't miss the dumplings... and definitely save room for dessert. Drinks have a good twist and themed flavors to make it interesting. The service was impeccable... but seating, even with reservations, took time.

This place was so insanely good and so innovative I'm just in AWE right now!! The decor is gorgeous - the restaurant is decked out in greens and hanging ephemera. Our waiter was the nicest guy - asked him for recs and he was so detailed about every explanation. We started with the sweet corn wontons - oh my goodness!!! The sweet corn with cream corn puree, the lemongrass infused tom yum broth, the grilled corn bits, the thinly wrapped wontons... I was actually insanely obsessed with this. The creamy corn inside complimented the tangy soup perfectly!! I was under the impression this would be like a fried crab Rangoon which I LOVE, but this was infinitely better. We also tried the pork belly and shrimp Vietnamese crepe, which was TO DIE FOR!! At the risk of sounding like a robotic food influencer LOL! The flour crepe was not super thin but stayed crispy for a long time, the fillings and variety of herbs (basil, mint, cilantro, etc) combined with everything else made the perfect bite. You chop up the crepe, wrap it in lettuce, then dip in that fish sauce. The Balinese chicken thigh was honestly a bit dry especially for chicken thigh, but the coconut cream and the rice made is sooo satisfying. I was just ok with the macerated kale and bean sprout salad, though it did add a tangy and crunchy note to the dish. The piece of crispy chicken skin was fun to chew too! We couldn't resist dessert and got the warm bread pudding and almond and lychee Che. The bread pudding was soo crispy on the outside but so moist on the inside, but that dollop of crème fraiche was wayyyyy too much. The end of our plate was just a whole creamy mess. Almond and lychee Che was very refreshing - I think the perfect way to end a meal!!

    Tofu and Malaysian popcorn chicken

Just went here for the first time and really loved the unique entrees and presentation. The service was really quick on the weekday that we went and all the staff were accommodating and friendly. The bonus was the free parking lot! There's also plenty of neighborhood street parking nearby. We had a large group with toddlers and I felt like the place was very family friendly and sweet. No one made us feel like we were a bother with our kids which is always a plus to me! :) We ordered several items for appetizers: salt and pepper fried tofu, eggplant sambal dip, Malaysian popcorn chicken, Coconut shrimp toast, and lotus ginger and shrimp salad. We also ordered the Balinese chicken and beef rendang, and the Ba spirit free drink. Everything was incredible. The eggplant sambal tasted kind of like hummus but not as creamy. Malaysian popcorn chicken and the coconut shrimp toast were my favorite appetizers ! The Balinese chicken tasted similar to entrees I've had before in Bali - though the chicken was on the drier side. The beef Rendang was delicious and reminded us of South Asian curries. Loved the spice level on everything - it was actually spicy, not MN Spice! Really loved the ambiance of the green walls and beautiful mural in the bathroom too. Everything was clean and scenic looking with the hanging greenery and lights.

Great spot with fun decor and outdoor seating! The menu has a lot of food and beverage options and the waiter explained everything well. For appetizers we got the Burmese Tea salad which was incredible. Really enjoyed the various textures from the different ingredients, also flavored very well. For entrees we got the Balinese Chicken Thigh, the sticky rice and the sea bass. Happy with all the options. Note some dishes come fairly spicy, but delicious! Overall a great spot for dinner, recommend!

Overall good experience! Service was great, they take reservations, and good options for gluten free, gluten free, and celiac. I think I expected more because of all the recognition and buzz. Food was good, nothing disappointing, but also nothing with a wow. We ordered -Crispy Rice salad with pork belly (3/5) expected more vegetables or greens and the cold rice left a greasy film in our mouths -taro and shrimp fritters (5/5). This was crispy and came with 2 dipping sauces. -hamachi crudo (4/5) a nice fresh starter. Fresh fish in coconut milk with a nice citrus finish -turmeric sea bass (4/5). A nice piece of fish on top of rice noodles and crunchy peanuts. -curry beef (3.5/5). This is spicy. Be warned not MN spicy but Asian spicy. Comes with coconut rice and cauliflower greens. Wish there was something acidic or pickled with it. Tasted heavy. Would I return? Not sure but glad I tried it. Cute decor with covered patio and a bar area. Very small parking lot. Will probably need to search for street parking.

There were other great options too! So this would be a solid date spot or meeting with friends so everyone can get something they like. There is a fair amount of seating inside and a fair amount of seating outside on a patio. There really isn't a view for the patio. There are free parking lots across the street though! Service: This is where they lost a star from us. The woman who took our order had no energy, wasn't very friendly and just looked annoyed we were ordering. I had heard good things about the service, so this was a bummer. The food: We got them take out wings and each got the pork ramen. The wings are very good, but best in twin cities? No. Are they worth getting? If you love a crunchy wing, then yes! The ramen had the most flavorful broth!! Oh my goodness it was rich and full of flavor! The noddles were cooked perfectly! Definitely one of the best ramen dishes I have had in the twin cities! We would have tried the ribs but they were all out of :( Definitely check this place out!

I lived in the Houston and Garland Texas area all my life where there is a large vietnamese population... and for the past 5 months, I have just been exploring Minnesota and Wisconsin and Illinois for vietnamese food. This evening... I was just craving pho. lets start with the ambiance. Its a pretty hip place once you get inside. I do like the cultural blend of modern and old school, and you see it with the different type people that come in. The staff there was prompt, and unlike my old school favorite in Richardson Texas... the staff to customer ratio was high. So the service was quick and attentive. Now for the pho. I went with the Dac Biet because I never know sometimes if I will get tough precut preprocessed meats... not in this case. I felt that all the ingrediants were fresh...and catered toward the old school viet palette, which I thank you. I understand a lot of pho house have to stay in business and cater to the local palette but this one was spot on. You can just breath in the right mixture of ingrediants. The bowl was reasonably priced, and the portions were similar to what I am used to having in Houston. It was fantastic as I scarfed it down to quick and forgot to take a picture. However, all the pictures that I have seen associated with this location are accurate. Overall, I would come back here. I am interested in trying their Stone pho next time as th emenu advertisement made it look tasty.

Service staff was as expected for a busy day and we kept getting the wrong items sent out but they were nice and apologetic, it was just a busy day and had newer staff. Parking is limited, be sure to pay attention to where you're parking since certain spots are meant for businesses nearby. They have patio seating but I don't know if they actually provide food service outside. Bathrooms are currently out of service so they have two port-o-potties outside. It's a nice space and gets lots of natural sunlight, I do wish they had some tint or blinds though because we were seated next to a window and it was a bit blinding especially with the sun reflecting off the metal cups and laminated menus. I've heard great things about their food but for me it was a miss. We all had pho but the amount of herbs and fresh toppings wasn't sufficient for 6 phos. They were accommodating and gave us additional items we asked for. The calamari was on the greasier end and was bigger than expected. For my palate both the banh mi and pho were lacking in flavor. I put a lot of things into my pho but it just didn't taste like anything to me except for pho powder. The ribeye pho had a generous portion of broth but only like 5 slices of meat. The oxtail stone bowl pho one looked hot and didn't have enough space to add everything in without it overflowing while the other didn't look like the broth was hot enough to cook the noodles. I will say though their ordered drink cups and to-go containers game was top notch. I received a reusable bag with my two banh mis to go instead of a plastic bag. It's probably not somewhere I'd return to unless someone else absolutely had to have it but to each their own.
