I FINALLY got the opportunity to go to Saigon Uptown Bistro Restaurant in Minneapolis. My mom was in town and wanted a great treat. I was not disappointed. Finding out that the restaurant had existed for over 40 years a regular mentioned that was also dining at the time, at least 20 years I hear from another. I was able to even speak with Tom, a regular mentioned that he doesn't bother to buy many groceries because he enjoys his meals everyday at Saigon Uptown. OK. What did we order? Vegetarian Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls, Sweet & Sour Chicken (mom), Vegetable Stir Fry (me), and Bubble Tea. DE-LI-CIOUS. AND each dish was enough to share for us but had plenty to take home. My advice tho... don't go when you are really hungry because you may have a hard time trying to choose from the delicious options on the menu. Or, want to order more than what you will eat. AND - soooo happy by the way that there are so many vegetarian options that I can choose from on the menu. Will I go back? HECKIE YEA! I will go back definitely to try as many options as I can! I love this spot. It's so cozy, and it's regulates my nervous system each time I stop by! The service is exceptional, they make you feel like you're at home. The interior has beautiful paintings, and the offer jasmine iced tea! We grabbed that, and some cream cheese wontons to start with. We both got the chicken pho, and I loved all the seasonings in it. Saigon has been around for a long time in uptown. It's basically one of those places that makes their living at takeout but what the hell let's throw some tables in here. But you don't eat here for the ambiance and that's totally good and fine. Last time, we got Pho with brisket and meatball, Chicken w broccoli, chicken wings and Mock Duck fried rice. Lemme tell you, that was some of the best fried rice. Could have used more egg but the flavors and textures were on point. Could ALMOST be satisfied with just that but let's not be crazy. The Pho kicked ass, all you want from vietnamese soup and oh so comforting in the cold winter months. Chicken and broccoli wasnt super flavorful but it hit the spot and portions were good. The wings were surprisingly good. I'm used to most asian restaurants offering wings as a little unremarkable add-on, cooked to that certain dryness. But not these! I don't know if they marinade them or what but these were really unique, juicy and delicious. Will always get the wings now. I was there yesterday. 2-28-26. It was my first time there in over 20 yrs. I ordered safe; Vietnamese egg roll and Chicken Chow Mein, Vietnamese style. They even make their own crispy chow mein noodles! Come on! Both were SO WONDERFUL! I would like to broadcast to the entire Twin Cities. No, it's not fancy, far from it; looks like all of the upheaval in Mpls in the last few years have really taken its toll. Don't let that stop you. This is my roommates favorite place for egg rolls. He was craving them so we went. There were any 2 other tables. Though the decor is dated the egg rolls are amazing. It looks like this place has been open for 12 years and has so few reviews...they must have a lot of regulars that sustain them. This place is not visually appealing, but the food was GREAT and the guys that work there seemed so nice. The server and the cook independently brought out a fortune cookie for my 3-year-old, haha. The prices are as if they haven't been updated in 5 years. There were entrees for $11 and $12 dollars! We will definitely be back!! I used to go to this restaurant for many years. But in about 2023 they raised their prices astronomically. A meal for two, for lunch was about $25. Now you are going to pay $45 - $50 for a meal for two. I can forgive the décor is 1975 , I can forgive the service is slow, and the perpetration is slow ( take a book - it will be atleast 20 minutes ), but a 100% price increase - I don't live it that much. read more

We wanted to try something in our neighborhood. Parking was simple and we ordered our food online with ease. We ordered the wonton egg noodle soup and bun/vermicelli noodles with stir fried pork. Plus we got the appetizer combo. I liked my soup, and would get it again. So filling and it had fresh simple ingredients. I don't care for soap aka cilantro, but I really enjoyed the soup. It was not over powered by that taste. It had more taste from the broth. The noodles we're so soft in both our dishes that we couldn't really use chopsticks. We got it to go and they know exactly how to package pho. And the order was done when they said it was when we got there. The chicken wings seemed to not be fried hard enough to me. Ordered last night. 2 out of 3 of us didn't love our food and they didn't deliver Vietnamese Coffee we ordered. They asked for feedback this morning, I let them know about the coffee and they promised to do better, but no offer of a refund or discount off a future order. I'd maybe call this a hidden gem of Uptown/LynLake? I don't hear much about Saigon and have never visited until now! When you walk in, the first thing you'll notice is how much space there is and how clean it is! They are currently only open for takeout but post-covid I can imagine this place will be full of life, they've got huge booths and tables perfect for groups! Also spotted a coatrack aka Minnesota essential. I was greeted by a very kind gentlemen who gave me a few minutes to look at the menu. After deciding everything looked too good to decide, I just asked him what he recommended which was the Hot & Spicy Lemongrass Chicken. I ordered this mild, cream cheese wontons, and a crispy coconut roll. He told me it would only be about 10 minutes and it was! The grand total for 3 items was only $13!!! What a fantastic price! The entrée came packed with white rice separately. The lemongrass chicken was truly mild for my lame low spice tolerance, but packed huge flavor! The chicken was cooked with some sauteed onions and I can see why he recommended it! The cream cheese wontons came with a ton of wontons, maybe 7, and they were all HUGE! Seriously the biggest cream cheese wontons I've ever gotten at a restaurant. These came with the classic red sauce as well. The wontons were not as crispy I've had in the past but they also weren't as oily so I think I prefer it this way! They're also cream cheese wontons so you can't go wrong. Lastly, I got a crispy coconut roll which they had in a jar by the register. I've never really seen this at a restaurant but for $1 it was a no brainer! It was light, airy, yet crispy! Don't be fooled by first sight when walking in. The ambience, decor, dark lighting and actual menu book made me feel uneasy (and let me point out the at there was one other set of guest and it was 9pm). Minus one point for this (which in my opinion seems so unfair) BUT YOOOOO....... The food was DE-LI-CIOS. I was apprehensive at first looking at the menu as I only came in looking for authentic Vietnamese food. I was not disappointed; actually quite impressed. I had both the vegetable egg rolls and pork egg rolls- the pork were my favorite. I also had the BBQ pork with vermicelli noodles- FRICKEN YUMMO. This used to be my favorite restaurant in uptown. Their food is basic Chinese but it's consistent and delicious. Today I was ordering some Saturday lounging lunch and I noticed my previous standard order (wontons, sesame chicken, mock duck fried rice, and extra veggies) came out to be $45 on DoorDash. I was shocked. I looked at my old receipt from the last time I ordered and it was $23 for the same thing. I figured this had to be a mistake so I called the restaurant. Someone I talked to confirmed that a few months ago they updated prices and a lot of them DOUBLED. I understand inflation is out of control and their raw materials costs went up, but for no portion increase at all, doubling prices is insane. Won't order from here any longer. We weren't aware that we had to order through a QR code and waited about 10 minutes before figuring it out ourselves. The person who waited on me was friendly and prompt as best possible with closing duties on consideration, didn't realize when I say down it was close to closing time. Really enjoyed that the food was very hot and fresh but was disappointed that it wasn't what I expected. Ordered the pad Thai with chicken, usually just noodles, eggs, carrots, bean sprouts, and peanut topping. Saigon Uptown is a standout. Certainly the best value for Asian food in Mpls. My favorites are the Beef Pho and Tofu Fried Rice. During Covid I ordered fried rice from more than ten different places (when Saigon was unavailable), it's genuinely the best fried rice around this area. read more

The first exposure to this restaurant was through a family friend's recommendation when I wanted one of my favorite vietnamese dishes, Banh Cuon, for my graduation party. This is probably the best catered banh cuon in town. Parents approved, saying, and I quote, "reminds me of eating this fresh in the streets of Vietnam". They only make banh cuon Saturdays and you can pick your catering Saturday morning. That's it for Banh cuon. Now eating at the restaurant itself was alright. We liked the banh cuon enough that sometimes we go on Saturday morning and to eat it there. It is a very empty restaurant though. The two times I have eaten there, there was only one or two other groups there. A lot of people order to go because there were people who came in got their food/catering and left. Their menu is really large and had a lot of dishes. I think this is the reason it take so long to get the food out because I am sure once something is ordered it takes a long time to prepare given the vastness of possibilities. Food-wise, we've almost just eaten the Banh cuon - a thin rice crepe filled with meat and eaten with bean sprouts, cilantro, pork sausage and dipped in fish sauce. I would not recommend the pork sausage that comes on top of the Banh cuon. When we cater, we usually eat it with our own pork sausage from home. Today I tried their combo appetizers which had cream cheese wontons, fried chicken wings and egg rolls. I thought all the fried appetizers were decent. I liked the chicken wings the best. I also tried the Mi Hoanh Thanh, which is noodle with dumplings. It started out decent but as I kept eating, I thought the soup was very bland. Not sweet like HK noodle. Like the reviews mentioned, the restaurant is run by a cute little old lady that reminds me of my grandma. She doesn't speak too much english, but means well. I would highly recommend this restaurant for ordering Banh Cuon when having a large vietnamese party. read more

I love their food and location and the prices are eye opening for how cheap they are. A meal of sweet and sour chicken is $6.05-I ordered that tonight. It was plenty of food and the quality is excellent. The sweet and sour was not a tub of red sauce either, it was a sauce that had pineapple chunks, onion, garlic, green pepper and carrot and was very, very good-a tad spicy. I absolutely love this place. It's a hole in the wall, but it's always clean and well taken care of - they recently got new menus and some new plates. The two brothers who serve are really nice (mom and sometimes dad are in the back cooking!), and the prices are really affordable. I often order a second meal to go for lunches for the next couple of days. My favorite is the kung pao chicken - I can tell the peppers are fresh and the sauce is delicious. Food here is super cheap - but when it comes to quality, service, and overall experience, you get what you pay for. I've tried a few of the stir fry dishes here, and they've all been just mediocre. The ingredients and recipes are not very authentic, and the meat dishes are diluted by so many extraneous vegetables (I've never before had a kung pao chicken with water chestnuts, bell peppers, peas, and the rest of the kitchen sink - it's supposed to just be chicken and peanuts). Dishes take quite a while to come out, so if you want takeout, you should definitely call ahead. And if you were planning to dine in, the restaurant itself isn't very well maintained - the bathroom door wouldn't even lock. On the bright side, the staff is very friendly and welcoming. And as already mentioned, you'd be hard pressed to find Chinese food this cheap elsewhere. But as with many things in life, you get what you pay for - so if you're looking for a meal that will delight and satisfy, look elsewhere. read more

In 1988 I first went to this restaurant. My husband and I first dated here. We returned on our 30th anniversary. The food is still the best. It seemed like everyone in the restaurant was a regular...many did not even get menus. They just ordered. People came in for take out too. In 2019 my husband and I ordered a dumpling appetizer which was delicious and fresh. So, do you think we got 2 or 3 dumplings? No, we got 6! Perfect for sharing with up to 3 people. The fish dipping sauce was good and spicy. I then ordered a number 11 which was all kinds of fresh vegetables, I got chicken but you could get pork or beef, with a spicy black bean sauce-excellent. I got it at a medium spice level and it was right on. My husband got beef and pea pods. The beef was super tender and just what he wanted. Sure it isn't some hip upscale interior space but it is very clean- even the restrooms. I sometimes think we forgot some of the good restaurants from over the years and abandon them for new trendy spots. Well, here is one to revisit and love..Love? Another thing to love is the pricing. Affordable restaurants in uptown are a novelty at this point. Make it local amd you have a rare gem. The food that you get here is nothing different from your usual Asian restaurants but its run by a family with some real sweet ladies. My go to is cashew chicken dish. I tries my friends dish and that tastes nice too. There is free restaurant parking at the back as well. Plus plenty of seating arrangement. The place also has its own particular smell. I've waited almost ten minutes after sitting for a menu and ended up getting up and ordering food at the register.
