Two old ladies hold down the front. When I saw a giant bowl of Bue Bo Hue at the next table, I had to order it. And the old ladies kill it with their great hospitality. So this happens to be the best bowl of BBH in Frogtown! It's not an exaggeration. The broth is deep in flavor and very satifying, with Copious portions of meat. I'll have to try other dishes next time, but I don't know...sometimes when you find a good thing it's hard to switch... There is a small lot adjacent to the building. I ordered delivery from here and liked the food. I would actually rate it a 3.5 because it was good, but it didn't really stand out or wow me. I ordered a Rare beef, brisket, flank, and tripe pho, and a tri-colored dessert. Initially, the noodles and beef looked minimal, but after adding the soup, the whole bowl of pho was very filling. The soup was flavorful and light (not too overpowering), so I enjoyed the pho. It was worth the price! The tri-color dessert (Che ba mau) was good too. I was craving it, and it hit the spot. It's funny because I remember when my Uncle first bought this building, I recall his tenant downstairs was Tayho... I recall eating here merely because it was underneath the offices and convenient. With time, it gained popularity amongst my Spoken Word artist friends, my theatre friends, my party friends, my old high school friends, my professional colleagues... and I didn't realize just how the taste was just a bit distinct and different, but one thing was for sure, I was always VERY satisfied with their Pho. I recall generous flavors and evidence of onions... sweetness... larger portions of broth and noodles (when compared to Pho ca Dao). I remember maybe 10 years ago, all the servers were always very attentive and friendly. I am Hmong, and the Hmong community was a large part of the customer base... I always remembered how the employees treated EVERYONE equally. It might be a funny thing to say, but I have seen otherwise (just saying). I now live in LA - and when I get into the pho debate - no one here (or San Jose, even Sac) believes when I tell them MN has some of the best pho.... I just tell them they haven't tried some of my favorite places yet. Sometimes.. I miss Tayho Pho, sure it's been a while since I've been back, but I sure hope the recipe is the same. This is the best authentic Vietnamese food I've had in the state, however, their banh mi was disappointing considering that their pho, bun rieu, and bun bo hue is excellent. The banh mi isn't all authentic. It's missing the meat spread, so no condiment with it whatsoever besides a packet of soy sauce. Not my favorite banh mi style. read more

Tay Ho is a fun whole in a wall type of restaurant. It really is a cute family owned restaurant served by aunties who have been there for years. No frills straight to the point, menu is clear- has both Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. Pho is good but light in flavor, on the sweet side. There are 2 sizes, I think for the price protein is somewhat lacking. There are other options around the city if preference for pho is more beefy and rich in flavor. The grilled pork Banh Mi is good, chewy bread crunchy texture. I would return for the Banh Mi. I recently went to Tay Ho, a small Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall located in St. Paul, MN. I grew up on Vietnamese food, so naturally, I have a big love for it and Tay Ho did not disappoint. My mom and I were there for a lunch date and she got their B1 aka "Bun Dac Biet" ($12.95) which is a vermicelli noodle salad with an egg roll, grilled pork, pickled veggies & a grilled pork meatballs skewer (skewer was on the sweeter side). It was the perfect summer option! I opted for their M5 "Mi Hoanh Thanh" ($12.95) which is their egg noodle soup with wontons & sliced pork - a soup for the soul). The wontons broke a part a bit in the broth, but the filling tasted great. All in all everything was tasty, and prepared fresh! I loved my mi's broth - slurp ready. Portions were generous and compared to other Viet places in the Twin Cities, it's cheap for what you get. I would go to Tay Ho again for their service alone. Our server (also named Kim) was a sweetheart who was on top of it & so welcoming - left me wishing service was this good at every local establishment. Haven't been there for years so decided to go and it was a waste of time and money! Food and service were horrible! Pho tastes like bland non authentic Vietnamese Pho. We were the only customers there and they still forgot one of our orders! Seems like the hostess knew but didn't bother. When it came time to pay we just told her to take the item off since we didn't receive it. She didn't argue and agreed to take it off. Sad. Tay Ho is a pretty good place. I have been here a couple of times. Here is what I got... i got the fried rice special which has chicken, pork and shrimp. The flavor of fried rice was kind of plain, however my niece still like it . The chicken wings was a good decent size which is great it was plain looking however the flavor was well salted. The eggroll was good as well, however the outside looks like it was super fried up. Also, I got the vermicelli salad ( meatball, eggroll and pork). The taste of the fish sauces after pouring it into the salad got water down, which to my surprising it doesn't happen often but it happens. Sat down and was given water that was less than 3/4 filled with no ice. The pho dac biet was ok. It had a sweeter taste. It had one piece of tripe and maybe a piece of tendon. The service was good as I believe it was the manager who took my order. She refilled my cup of water with out me asking seeing that it was less than 3/4 fill, I barely took a sip of the Luke warm water. This is heads down one of my favorite places (if not my favorite) in the Twin Cities for PHO! As a local, growing up in the Frogtown neighborhood too, I always felt lucky to be surrounded by authentic cultural food on University Ave and I always leave here as a happy camper. I am always so excited to eat my food here that I forget to take pictures every time- even when I do take out! The eggrolls (A1) and beef pho (P2) is my to go but I have also enjoyed any of the refreshing rice vermicelli salads on a hot summer day or the hot bun bo hue (B10) on a chilly fall evening. For me the pho broth is clean and just the perfect level of savory for my taste and Tay Ho is never cheap on giving me handfuls of veggie toppings of bean sprouts, lime, basil and jalapeno for my preference. My only feedback is that I wish they gave a little more meat. To be honest, I have never got Chinese food from here lol but there is a lunch special for that. For COVID, Tay Ho is doing take out only and face mask is required. If you order pho or a soup, they always put it in a take out bowl (noodles, toppings and stock in different containers to keep it fresh) with plenty of napkins and plastic silverware- which is really nice is you are going back to the office or some where where you dont have access to silverware. And I did notice that the prices went up a little- which I think is normal. On my birthdays growing up, we would have entire weekends of rolling our own, a delightfully colorful spread of shrimp, pork, greens, noodles, and rice paper enticing us to have fun and enjoy. I've tried every spring roll in my path in the Twin Cities thus far, and there are far too many amazing spring rolls in the area to settle for subpar fare. The one thing I like about this place is that they are open pretty late compare to all the other Asian restaurants on University Avenue. It's convenient and they do have a small parking lot and some additional street parking. Hands-down, they have one of the best eggrolls I've had from any Asian restaurant. They also have some Chinese dishes on their lunch and dinner specials menu. I'm not a big fan of their pho broth, but they have plenty of other delicious dishes to pick from. Their R1 Combination Rice Platter with pork chop, pork loaf and pork skin is bomb.com! Sometimes, restaurants will have dry porkchops that are precooked then heated when ordered. Not Tay Ho - well, not tonight anyways. The porkchop was juicy and tasted like it came right off the grill. Their sesame chicken wings are a great starter too. When I get pho from Quang's, I get bad headaches and the feeling is terrible. I think it's due to the MSG, but not 100% sure. The soup base at Tay Ho is not bad, but not amazing. I usually get the combo pho here and while it's cheaper than some other places, they don't give as much meat like tendon, tripe, meatballs and etc... The egg roll here is not that great though. We had dinner here on a Friday night. We came for pho and banh mis--except they ran out of banh mis by 6:30 PM (darn it!). We decided on eggrolls and the pho special, one size L and one size XL. The eggrolls were a good size and very crispy! The sauce had a distinct sour yet fishy smell, but tasted light and sweet. The XL bowl was intimidating, and broth was sweeter than what I am used to. I've been here countless times, however this is my first review. Fast service, flavorful dishes. Perfectly priced. I love that this place is generous with portions. I like to have a few pieces of meat with every bite of pho since some places offer little to no meat at all. This place is great with matching the ratio of meat with pho. Always a good time at this place, my favorite for Wonton Soup. At a very reasonable price, it comes in a bow of fresh broth and spring mix of chopped veggies, a couple of slices of slowly steamed beef, and of course, an ample amount of dumplings. Today I didn't get wonton soup (I call it light Pho on a budget, great for cold days or if you're feeling a bit under the weather), I instead opted for a bit heavier fare of sweet & sour chicken with steamed white rice. Firstly...yes, I know going to an authentic Asian noodle soup restaurant is not the place for sweet & sour chicken...but the way the chef prepares this American staple is so delicious! Everything is fresh; I think they even steam the rice to order. Fast, superb, delicious, and my water glass must have been refilled three times without asking by the young man running the register. Everything on the menu is exceptional, but he warned if you order any noodle soups: the portion is mammoth! The bowls are HUGE!
