I was disappointed with what I received here compared to other Eat Street Vietnamese options. The good things: very inexpensive, the roast pork in the pork banh mi is juicy and flavorful, and the bread is on point, a perfect baguette. So why three stars? Taste and volume! The banh mi was like 75% bread by volume -- I had to hunt for my pork to make sure it was in there. But even the veggies were less than I'd expect, and they tasted more like raw shredded carrots/daikon than pickles. There wasn't a good balance of filling to bread, nor was that beautiful contrast of fat, acid, crunch, and sweetness that IMO defines the proper banh mi. Similarly, our fresh spring rolls were solidly sized, but they were primarily filled with noodles and bean sprouts -- with no mint or basil! I have trouble understanding a spring roll with zero herbs in it. If this were the only option in the neighborhood, maybe, but with Tau Bay and Lu's right next door, this will not be my go-to. read more

I've been visiting Jasmine Deli for over a decade. It was 5 stars when I first reviewed it in 2008 and it's still 5 stars today. For the record: they make the best banh mi in the United States, especially for vegans. This hole-in-the-wall is a staple for quick, delicious, inexpensive Vietnamese dishes with numerous vegan options. They don't label their vegan options, but do call out the vegetarian dishes (most of which are vegan, but ask questions to be sure). The deli revolves around their delectable banh mi. For vegans, you can get a tofu, mock duck or curry mock duck sandwich (mock duck is seitan from a can); just make sure to specify "no butter" and you got yourself the best vegan banh mi in the United States. The tofu banh mi ($4) is ridiculously cheap but oh so good. The tofu is fried and lightly covered in a savory soy-based sauce; the carrots, cucumbers, cilantro and daikon are fresh. And the bread---oh man, this is the best Vietnamese baguette around. It's light, flaky, warm and delectable. The vegetarian (vegan as long as you get rice noodles) noodle soup ($8) is hearty, savory and delicious. Parents and I make the visit to Eat Street at least once a month to indulge in good cuisine, whether Middle Eastern, American, or Asian. For Asian food, specifically Vietnamese cuisine, we have tried all of the restaurants around the area (besides Jasmine Deli). Yes, in my 22 years, I have walked past this place but have not tired it despite hearing good reviews and raves from my American friends. And so we ventured off to try Jasmine Deli. To sum it up, it seems to cater particularly more to Westerners, though the food is somewhat authentic. I ordered the bun thit nuong cha gio and thought it was fairly good. Portions are a bit low and prices a little higher, which could be the two points that may sway others to near by Quangs or My Huong. My parents had the pho and enjoyed the broth. However, there were barely any noodles in the dish. All in all, Jasmine Deli is a good Vietnamese restaurant. Is it the best in Eat Street? However, despite their increase in popularity, Jasmine Deli remains at the top of the list. The combination of a PERFECTLY crunchy outside/soft inside French bread with impeccably fresh vegetables plus choice of meet (I'm a fan of the roasted chicken), makes Jasmine Deli still the place to go for Bon Mi. But this is not a one-trick pony Vietnamese place. The Pho, noodle salads, spring rolls with peanut sauce and crispy egg rolls are equally high quality and super flavorable. My buddy and I hopped on the 18 down Nicollet down to 25th St. to a place I had seen on Yelp after visiting a few Vietnamese places on Eat Street. The establishment was empty when we walked in and it looks a lot larger on the outside. There are about 12 tables, but there were plenty on pre-made banh-mi sandwiches on top of the counter, so I am guessing it is pretty high on the take out menu for workers around here. The menu is pretty large with a bunch of options for pho, banh-mi, the noodle salads, and egg rolls. I ordered a combo pho bowl with egg noodles and my friend got the pork egg rolls and a banh-mi sandwich. We sipped waters and discussed life and about 8 minutes later our food came out. The bowl of soup looked huge and had some bean type sprouts on the side and some HOT! jalapeno pepper slices. I tore up the peppers into the bowl and dumped the additional veggies in as well. Everything I touched for about the next hour or so burned from the the pepper slices. I mean everything. Ahem! The broth was perfectly salty and I added some Sriracha sauce to it. This was some spicy soup after that. My eyes were watering half the time. But a good type of water. There was a big shrimp in there and a couple of hunks of fresh calamari, which had a wonderful rubbery texture. There was also some kind of pork ball I think, cut up in there and slices of pig as well. With the egg noodles, it was a solid bowl of pho. Not the best I have had, but it was pretty darn good. My only complaint was that the noodles were all stuck together, so it was a little tough to eat. #EdinaProblems. I tried a slice of my friends fried egg roll, and it was a solid 10. Super flaky and lots of protein. Good stuff. He also stated that his sandwich tasted healthy and flavorful. The service was awesome and our check was about $10 a piece after tip. Not too bad at all. Very fair. While we were waiting, the place filled up and patrons were swiping banh-mi off the deli counter. Seems like this is a popular place for a great banh-mi $4 take out sammy. Spring roll was ok, not the best I've had, not the worst. The bahn mi sandwich bread was delicious. It looked thick but it really isn't. The top is super crispy, the middle part of soft, perfection. (Bread was better than Lu's sandwich). Eaten a score of times. This deli differentiates itself from all the other Vietnamese deli's on Nicollet by not using MSG, fraternizing with the white folks, and priding itself on quality over quantity. Given how it seems that almost every Asian place uses MSG, I'm surprised Jasmine doesn't advertise it's abandonment of this malicious ubiquity. I've enjoyed the chicken broken rice, pork vermicelli salad, and curry noodles many times. The Vietnamese sandwiches may be great, but I get mine elsewhere because I like the meat hot off the grill. For some reason it seems to be a favorite of the white, neighborhood people, whereas a place like Quangs teems with Vietnamese driving in from outside the city center. This makes Jasmine no less "authentic" however, this small, family run place just seem more involved in the neighborhood and more gregarious with their customers. More about it: Café Sua Da: Serviceable and packs a punch, but I think the coffee could be a bit stronger. 3/5 Goi Cuon: Although the dish was presented beautifully, I wish there were more flavors coming from the peanut sauce and spring rolls. Especially the pork. It just tasted old and dry. 2/5 Hu Tieu Dac Biet: The broth was fine, but I think it could've used some dried shrimps or scallops to give it more of an umami flavor. It's okay. 2.5/5 Prices were very affordable (I paid under $17 total) and the service was solid. With some positive experiences long ago in the past, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and rate them a solid 3 stars. I hope the food improves. I've had Vietnamese sandwiches before, but this place rocks! They have inside and outside seating, and their sandwiches are pre-made so you can grab and go...can't get better than that. They're $3.75 each, and then there are also some pre-made packages of spring rolls for about $4.00. Today was my first visit and I got both, but I should've gotten just one because they are both SUPER filling. I am very impressed. The service was also very nice. Unexpected gem on eat street. I always drive by this place but never thought to go in. I finally convinced my husband to come with me even though he wanted Lu's! I was craving Asian food after eating countless enchiladas over the past week, I needed a place close by and it needed to relatively cheap. I've only ever walked by this place and finally decided to enter. Though the bare walls made me not want to stay for a sit down meal, I was instantly greeted by smiles and a menu for a take out order. After ordering I was offered water while I waited, always appreciated. I waited for about 7 minutes for my Fried Tofu Noodle Salad and Shrimp Spring rolls, not bad at all and for roughly $11 I was feeling good about my choice especially the weight when it was handed to me! I got home and opened my styrofoam container to reveal some beautiful looking food! I don't know if I've ordered a noodle salad before, but it was awesome! The vinaigrette that came with it was phenomenal, I could have ate that by itself. The tofu was cooked great with some lovely onions and very fresh greens! Very good, though I don't know about completely authentic, the noodles struck me as spaghetti-like right away, and the flavors not as in depth as other Vietnamese food. But I'm in no way in expert in this, just an opinion and I would get this again. The spring rolls I could leave, not my favorite, they are pretty small with no basil or mint, which left it kind of flavorless and the sauce was a little too sweet for me. (I dipped them in the vinaigrette!) I'm excited to try the Bahn Mi, they were staring at me from the front counter ready to be eaten by someone else! Walking back from Miss Bertha's with a big ol' vase of flowers (and three balloons flopping around in the breeze), I swung in to Jasmine Deli to grab a quick bite to take home with me. I had long ago tried their Bahn Mi sandwiches, but it was high time to refresh my memory, especially since on my first visit I didn't really understand vietnamese cuisine. I got a mock duck bahn mi, and even a thai bubble tea. It took a few minutes to prepare, but when it was ready I whipped out my credit card to pay . . . Yikes! Cash only! My total was $7.50, and I only had $7 in cold hard cash. They let me slide. How nice is that? The bahn mi was righteous, but I was a little a let down by the bubble tea. I have been ever since the first time I had one. The first time I had a bubble tea was in Boston, and it was actually tea, and I loved it. Every bubble tea place I find here has these slushie tea drinks. I don't think they're nearly as good. The one from Jasmine was okay at first, but only half of it could be acquired via the straw. I had to wait until I got home to spoon out the last of it, and it wasn't worth it by then. So skip the bubble tea, and stick with what Jasmine Deli does best: bahn mi, pho and spring rolls. read more

Authentic - yes. Nothing like walking into restaurant that is aesthetically careless and has questionable sanitation to make you feel right back in Asia. But authentic isn't synonymous with deliciously good. I came in with my friend and ordered a: Grilled Pork, Chicken, and Egg rice plate, grilled pork banh mi, a bowl of won ton soup, and eggrolls. You gotta do the staples right. We weren't too impressed with what we ordered. The grilled pork was really dry on the rice plate, there was too much bread to meat ratio in the banh mi, and the eggrolls were average at most. The only thing I liked was the won ton soup probably because I love the dried shallots (the little brown things) in the soup. The won ton soup is the only thing that I will ever come back to Jasmine Deli for. It was authentic in that the food felt very home-made. There was something about the food that made it not restaurant quality but more resembling something you'd find eating in a Vietnamese family's home. The way the grilled pork tasted resembled my aunt's grilled pork. Not that home-made isn't good.... but usually it's a lot different than what you'd find in a restaurant. For example, a home-made steak on the grill vs grilled steak at the Capital Grille or a home-made sandwich vs. one at Jimmy John's or Potbelly's. But on the flip side, the woman serving us was so sweet and nice and the service was so good, you felt like you were in her home and she's showing great hospitality to her house guests. I always love to see non-Asians embracing and enjoying the food that I grew up eating. It makes me feel like the world is moving toward being more open minded about other cultures. Food is so cultural and such a part of a person... I mean you do eat 3 times a day! However, when non-Asians outnumber the Asian people in a restaurant, it should cause you to think twice. I've been a fan of Jasmine Deli since my first stint living in the Twin Cities. I can't think of one thing I've had that isn't just totally delicious, and I've always found the owner and the other staff very friendly. The Banh Mi is always good (their bread is so awesomely crusty and chewy at the same time), and my favorite is the Curry Mock Duck. The veggie-friendly noodle salads are always really good, and the tapioca in the bubble tea always tastes fresh. It's also one of the few places I feel completely comfortable going for lunch/dinner on my own without a book or paper, and it seems cleaner now than when I used to go before 2009. My ONE gripe is that they haven't partnered with one of the delivery services in the area so I can enjoy their tastiness at home without having to walk the 4 miles roundtrip or hop on the bus. After a long lapse - who knows why - I stopped in at Jasmine Deli yesterday. The restaurant was empty!! This was a first for the dozen or so times I've been there. The server assured me they would fill up by 6pm, in another 30 minutes. Since they don't accept credit cards (Sarah, add this to your list) and my wallet generally has everything but cash, I had come prepared with paper money. I was short 4 cents and they were okay with that. 1 order of shrimp spring rolls, 1 mock duck curry banh mi and a mango bubble tea - for under $12 - an inexpensive dinner for two. The spring rolls were very well made, no complaints - theirs is the best I've had in the TC. The mock curry duck banh mi was too sweet and I could not detect the curry flavor - but the cucumbers and cilantro and carrots etc. achieved a nice balance of crunch and taste The mango bubble tea is what my husband thinks they do best but I find it toooo sweet . However, driving back home with the take out bag, I started sipping the bubble tea and ,,,had to drive faster to get home with enough tea left for him. The straw was HUGE and from the very first sip those tapioca pearls were sliding into my mouth. I still couldn't do a full size of bubble tea but a few sips would be good. Jasmine Deli has a good choice of vegan and vegetarian items and they will oblige if you request modifications. When I get the vegetarian soup I ask for no noodles, and more veggies, and have never been able to finish it all. I cannot remember if they have salad on their menu but I saw the owners eating salad once and asked for the same. Cucumbers, carrots, some other fresh veggies, herbs - with lime juice for dressing. This little place has a "family restaurant on a shoestring" interior that belies the tremendous care they put into the food. You will travel far and wide to find food this good this cheap! The V6 (combo noodle salad) is sublime. I also particularly like the grilled shrimp salad. All the salads are fresh and joyously complex. It's food that feels alive and makes *you* feel alive too. The soup broth is a thing of subtle beauty -- far richer and more complex than the similar broths at Quang's. My favorite is the Jasmine egg noodle soup. I'll also call out the wonton, because who'd expect greatness from wonton soup? Boooring, right? Wrong! It's delicious. A small wonton makes a nice lunch paired with a sandwich -- or the hidden treasure of the herb basil roll appetizer. The pre-made banh mi they have in the deli case are merely OK; if you really want a delicious one, have them make it for you fresh so that the bread is a bit crispy! My white friends loooove this place. And I can see why. The flavors are all acclimated to appeal to the white person's palate. This isn't to say the food isn't delicious and good necessarily. But, it is to say, it is not very authentic...all the deep earthy Southeast Asian flavors are omitted. For shame. When I want Pho, I want Pho! Even so, it was interesting to try out this more delicate version. If you want to try a much different version of traditional Pho', Jasmine's Pho is very very different. It's a light almost flavorless broth. There is a hint of some sort of flowery flavor in the broth, but I can't quite put my finger on it. It is indeed delicious and a sophisticated and imaginative variation of Pho. However, if you love the dark, neurotic, fiery traditional Vietnamese Pho, I'd avoid Jasmine. I wouldn't take my Asian parents here, but I'd take my hipster friends, is all I'm saying. read more

I only come here for the banh mi. They make a pretty good sandwich. The BBQ pork is excellent and has the right amount of meat. They don't use pate though. The curry mock duck sandwich, which had blown to legendary status in Minneapolis, is all right. The reason it's so highly touted is that it is pretty filling for a vegetarian sandwich. Despite the curry sauce, it is strangely bland. I think they need to add a little salt. Still, their sandwiches are quite cheap, which is always a plus. read more

Have eaten here several times. I find some things better than others: bun salads, banh mi, spring rolls are very good. While I have never gotten it, the curried mock duck banh mi seems very popular with the hipster bicycle riding tattooed crowd. I did find the highly touted soups disappointing. There was no beef pho, only weird amalgams of seafood items, egg noodles, and whatnot. Soups seemed more generically "pan Asian" than what I associate with Vietnam. This was like going to a hamburger joint and discovering all the burgers are actually made from ground chicken. Are the owners Hindu, and avoidant of beef? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Buhn mi is the new burger. So what. Pho is what you SHOULD be ordering if you make a trip down Eat Street. Vietnamese noodle soup, or pho (said f-ah, for those of you looking to be pronunciatically correct) combines rice, egg or wheat noodles with the protein of your choice, bean sprouts, jalapenos, and veggies drenched in a salty broth. A great light meal, Jasmine Deli's pho is better than the rest thanks to their broth. Thick and salty, with complex flavors and spices, the pho broth at Jasmine is making my mouth water as I write this. Try the noodle salads if you're looking for a little more green. The reason I probably like this better is that it's low key and the waiter is friendly. He just likes talking to you. Their cute dog is nice too. My best friend from high school addicted me to many things over the course of our friendship--punk rock, beer, bleaching my hair, punk rock. But the most dangerous addiction he may have stuck me with was the bahn mi one. When the girlfriend had to deposit some checks at the only ATM of her bank in Minnesota that accepts deposits, I said I'd drive if she bought me a Vietnamese sandwich. She readily agreed to those terms, and off we went toward Jasmine Deli. We started our meal with the mock duck spring rolls. They had a really good flavor to them, especially when paired with the peanut-Sriracha dipping sauce. I ordered the chicken bahn mi, the girlfriend ordered the pork banh mi. It was a solid sandwich, albeit it lacked the spice component that usually sets the banh mi apart from other sandwiches. I, liking spicy things, resorted to dumping Sriracha sauce on the sandwich. I would of given Jasmine 5 stars, but on this last visit their bathroom was a pit. Their spring rolls are great, perfect and fresh, their mock duck sandwiches cannot be beat. Ask for their house made chili sauce!! I have had their soups and noodles and broken rice dishes, what I appreciate is they do use veggie stock and make special sauces for us veggie heads. They do a kick ass bubble tea that is great. I know everything is house made there. However----------clean the bathroom, gut it, start over, put a damn light in the john. It's like their bathroom is an after thought put into their storage closet and there is some cleaning supplies in there and a slop sink with a plant in it. Really an unappealing place to pee. Great prices, relatively quiet, great food ( i recommend the rice noodle soups which not only fill you up, have excellent flavor, but leave you feeling amazing, not like you are going to burst). Okay, everyone says that i will never find as good a banh mi in the Twin Cities as i found in Orange County. On the contrary, i have found banh mi here that i've enjoyed MORE than their " superior" counterparts. My favorite is the roast pork, so that's what i got. The bread was a little chewy...but i bet it would be good if you warmed it up in the toaster oven for a while. The balance of ingredients was really good, not too much meat, not too much mayonnaise, just right. The meat was like the kind of roast pork you'd have at home. For some reason, a lot of places in Orange County had this weird roast pork that they'd use that wasn't like this. They did not skimp on the pickles, which is a MUST for me when it comes to banh mi. And their addition of macerated scallion was quite welcome as well. A party of flavors and textures, just like banh mi was meant to be. And they don't make their sandwiches to order here...not complaining too much about that, but i've never seen that before! Maybe that way they can get each one perfect w/o having to rush to see customers? I don't know, even American sandwich places make them to order. Sandwiches cost 3.50. I am used to never paying more than 2.50 for banh mi, and that's from a fancy schmancy place, but i guess i'm not in Kansas anymore. Delicious! And amazing selection of vegetarian options, although I'd definitely recommend it to meat eating friends as well. I got the vegetarian egg roll noodle salad and was very satisfied. Especially since most places only make it with meat, I was happy to finally get to try it. I also had mock duck spring rolls and a Vietnamese coffee which were both excellent as well. We also got very prompt friendly service, it's a cozy little place and the service matches the vibe. It feels like you're an old friend even on your first visit. I'll definitely be back! read more

I think I'm removing JD from the restaurants that I frequent, which makes me sad since I used to love it so. Original review: I used to really adore Jasmine Deli, but it seems like they have been going downhill lately. The last several times I have stopped in, they have been out of key ingredients. A few times they were out of bread for the sandwiches and last time they were out of spring rolls. How do you run out of something this basic when they are 2 of the main staples of the menu? Jasmine Deli is gold. Pure gold. A neighborhood staple with hole-in-the-wall style and better yet, hole-in-the-wall prices, J-Del is where it's at. The original member of the Jasmine family, now including Jasmine 26 and Cafe Kem, Jasmine Deli has always been my favorite place to grab a quick bite. The unassuming appearance of Jasmine Deli should not turn you away from it, nor should its sometimes questionable choice of music. The food is excellent, the service is prompt and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. But really, really, it's all about the food. The Bánh Mì is AWESOME, and the Bánh Mì Chay is better than any other Vietnamese restaurant on Eat Street. The Mock Duck sandwich is delicious, and the Curry Mock Duck sandwich is out of this world. Seriously. I know many meat-eaters who prefer the mock duck or curry mock duck sandwiches. The fresh spring rolls are great, and along with the sandwiches, can be picked up from the deli counter in practically no time at all. The deli counter items make great choices for an impromptu picnic. If it's a beautiful day, grab someone you care about, 2 sandwiches and a pack of spring rolls, and find some nice grass on which to eat. J-Del would still be one of my favorite restaurants if they only had this deli counter. However, there is a full menu, should you feel like staying (and I think you should!) Their noodle salads are excellent, and have won multiple "Best of the Twin Cities" awards. The pho is good, but not great. Tasty and huge, but not the star of the menu. Anything on the menu will be delicious, though. That's guaranteed. As others have noted, Jasmine is Cash/Check only, but the prices are very reasonable, so you can get a good meal without carrying an overstuffed wallet. For delicious Vietnamese food, look no further than Jasmine Deli. You won't regret it. read more
