I've been going Vietnam Star Restaurant for over 10 years. Love to support local business but I feel the quality of the foods isn't the same. Maybe different chefs? The last few times I ordered the eggrolls it was soggy and had a bitter taste. It also had an overdue smell. We couldn't eat it so just had to just toss it. read more

It's was nice to come back after many years, and see that they are still here in the same spot. I spoke to the owner, and they have been in this same spot for 23 yrs! I ordered the pho, which was simply beef and meatballs. The broth was homemade, basically the same as what a Vietnamese friend made when they had our family over. Yes, you have to adjust the broth, if you're into pho. And yes, you have to ask for the fish sauce, and the sugar is in packets. The service is impeccable. The dining room is in order, without stacks of boxes in the hallway, and clean. There's plenty of parking. The bathrooms are clean. The owners treat you with kindness, a smile, and gratitude for your business. All these things count a lot nowadays. By the way, their homemade Tiramisu is out of sight! Warning - rant and support for local business: I was sad to read all the 1 star reviews. Most of it was for the blandness of the broth, and comparisons of this place to authentic spots in Frogtown, St. Paul. A little bit of history: they were here long before Maplewood Mall food court is now filled with Asian fare; even before Pho King showed up in the food court for those who remember. Back then, Vietnam Star was the only viable Asian option in these parts. By these parts I mean around Maplewood Mall and Costco. Here's the thing, the primary clientele here are Anglos, not Asians. In fact, today for lunch I was only 1 of 2 Asians in the dining room. So my expectations are adjusted accordingly. It is not in Frogtown, even though that's technically not that far away. But when you're shopping in Maplewood, Frogtown might as well be in Wayzata. So when I'm around here, I know the food in the mall maybe more to my taste. However, sometimes I don't want to sit in a big mall full of people, watching my back, pay a lot of money for small portions, and be treated like crap on top of it. Sometimes, I just want to go to a nice place, be treated like a human being, and sit down in a booth to have a big bowl of pho. So what if I have to adjust the broth? I'm in Maplewood for crying out loud. Let's all be fair and support local businesses that are trying to make it work. read more

My friend took me to this place to eat Vietnamese foods. I ordered Pho beef noodle soup and it is great.

Solid 3 stars! Ordered Pho and spring rolls. Spring rolls were a little small and Pho meat balls were a bit small for my liking but overall I was happy. Very friendly owner and reasonable prices. If you need a Pho fix and you are close stop by! read more

We've tried almost every Vietnamese restaurant in Minnesota. This is our new favorite. Many strip mall Asian restaurants are just average, but Vietnamese Star is the real deal. Excellent food. Excellent service. Excellent ambiance. Pho is hard to fake. You know when you walk in the restaurant. The herbal fragrance is unmistakable. And the oolong tea and eggrolls were so good. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable, unhurried and cozy. Kristy the hostess is just a peach. read more

Dang I love this place. I've been coming here since they opened. Best eggrolls in this hemisphere and look at that shrimp they're servicing with the EFY. Yum! I can't stop giving them five stars, especially after putting up with my friend "Karen" with dietary limitations last Saturday. So sorry on her behalf. I love you all read more

Amazing pho, kind and very attentive service, great atmosphere. Will definitely go there again

People were very nice But the spring rolls were warm and the rice paper seemed gooey. I couldn't finish them because it seemed as though they were sitting out for awhile and I did not order ahead. It doesn't seem safe to eat food/meat that is warm and not From an oven. read more

We tried the pho and it was very bland, no flavor. I had been here in the past too and wasn't excited. My husband is Vietnamese so my review is backed up read more

My second visit and the food and service were just as good as the first time. The staff (owners?) were super friendly and our food came out quickly and did not disappoint. I recommend the spicy chicken, the pho, egg rolls, and wontons. The store and restrooms were also well kept and clean. I was shocked to see the approx 3.5 yep rating as of my writing this, I expected to see a 4.4 - 4.6. Keep up the great work and food! read more

Sigh...Many times I have eaten here. Tried several dishes, mainly Pho. I...okay, the service is great, the restaurant clean, and yet, I give such low marks because the food is just...sooo substandard. I ordred two different variations of Pho. Both equally disappointing- watered down, barely flavorful broth, like star anise, cloves, cinnamon sticks, black cardamom pods, fennel seeds, coriander seeds??? 48hour broil? Tastes not at all like actual Pho. A watered downed version to serve to unbeknownst suburban ignorants. I know, I probably sound arrogant. I am writing for those who are true foodies looking for a Pho fix and are contemplating Vietnam Star. Take the extra 15 min to go to Pho 400, Pha Ca Dao, or the many other better Pho restaurants in St. Paul along University Ave. The portion here is TINY for a base of $16, with very little meat, noodles or aromatics. Mainly broth, which, as I mentioned beforehand, is quite watered down and lacking any flavor, and some pieces of what you had ordered RE: meat, cilantro, onions, etc. The host/ess, servers and workers are EXTREMELY NICE AND ACCOMODATING! Why I feel bad giving such negative review for the food. It is obvious that there are people who come regularly, and that is a great community support system. However, I come for the food. Because I'm a foodie. So that is my take. If you just want great service with half@$$ed food, this is great for you. If you are looking to satisfy that Pho, Vietnamese HỦ TIẾU, or BÚN BÒ HUẾ, you will be disappointed. read more

What a very welcoming restaurant! After driving 3 hours from Hayward WI to MSP, we decided to exit from the highway to look for lunch options. It was a blessing stumbling into the Vietnam Star Restaurant. The food was heartwarming. The atmosphere was amazing. The best part is Christie and her brother. Christie was an amazing host. She made us feel right at home. She suggested amazing food options. We will be coming back the next time we are in the MSP area. Highly recommended! read more

Food is excellent. Service is friendly and quick. I used to live in the area and moved 25 miles away but if I am down in the area and it's meal time it is our favorite place to stop. read more

I recently visited this restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised about the new look of the place. From the floor to the ceiling was everything changed. It is clean, friendly, nice pictures on the wall, flowers on the table. Very welcoming. We ordered some spring rolls, Wonton soup, (tried their Tamarind soup too.) Entries were Tom Rim shrimp and Singapore noodles. All were very delicious. Lots of flavors, good portion, affordable price. We were lucky having Christy, the owner to serve us. She is kind, attentive, very professional. She cares about her business. I loved the relaxed vibe in the restaurant. I highly recommend Vietnam Star. I will return to this place read more

Excellent pho! Friendly service. Tasty food. Potato stir fry is very good and unique.

After moving we haven't been to Vietnam Star in several years but when in the area today, we were happy to see they were still there and were pleased to know their service, ambience, and food is still excellent. We enjoyed the mi ga chicken noodle soup, egg roll salad, and beef and potatoe dish. Everything was delicious. It feels like you dropped by your friend's place, who happens to be a great host and cook read more

Hands down the BEST Vietnamese restaurant in the metro. Christy, the owner makes everyone who comes in feel like family. The food is of the highest quality, fresh and large servings. Prices are very reasonable. Personally I love the Pho, beef and potatoes and the tofu noodle salad but it's the authentic Vietnamese egg rolls that will keep us coming back. ;-) read more

I really hate to post any negative reviews during a really trying time for the restaurant industry, but Come on Vietnamese Star!, make a frigging effort here to cook something edible! I ordered the shrimp in garlic sauce and the chicken pad thai. I would give the shrimp dish a solid 5 out of 10. Good flavor and there was some effort here. But the Pad Thai was an abysmal dish! A negative 10. It was like someone took 5 day old fettuccine noodles, reheated them, threw some old ass chicken in there and called it a day. No flavor, no spice, no good Sorry Vietnamese Star, but no bueno. read more

It's finally raining so I decided to celebrate with curry chicken from Vietnam Star. As always, great service, great food. And, this time I pulled something valuable out of my fortune cookie. If I understand the message correctly, worry and work are exhausing. So, I'm going home! read more

All of the food we had was really good. We tried the Vietnamese Coffee, Hot and Sour Soup, Egg Rolls, Potstickers, Singapore Noodles with Chicken, and Garlic Stir Fry with Chicken. I always love coming here! The family that owns this restaurant is amazing. You can tell they know their regular customers! The staff is friendly and attenative as well. There's parking, another plus! The food is always good, I know that I won't be disappointed. I ordered the grilled chicken and shrimp rice platter, sesame chicken, and iced coffee! The food was amazing and tasty! The iced coffee really hit the spot! I just wished there wasn't so much ice and more of coffee. Otherwise, it was really good! I'm glad there is a great Vietnamese restaurant in the suburbs, it's so hard to find one. I will be returning to this restaurant! read more

My husband and I wanted to find restaurant that had good Asian food & close to home. This place had 4.3 stars so we thought we would check them out. He ordered their "CRISPY SESAME CHICKEN" and I ordered the FUN CHOW. his food was soggy and bland..it was the CRISPY that caught his eye. My noodles were gummy and flavorless. The sauce was all corn starch it was thick with no flavor and no color. I tried to add chili oil and oyster sauce to give it flavor...it did not help. Oh yea, we also had a veggie egg roll, it was full of grease and really thick, unlike any Vietnamese egg roll I've ever had, it also had no flavor. $43 right in the garbage. I guess our search continues :-( read more

The best food, selection, and fresh ingredients for a fair price. My go to for lunch.

Great service and good food. Owner made a great suggestion and the Singapore noodle dish was excellent.

Went here since our usual place was closed and one of the worst pho I've had. Just water and a little oil with old (odd smelling) beef slices. My husband and I didn't even take more than 5 bites. The ambience: if you like an old man hacking a luggie every 5 minutes, go on ahead read more

Guys, I am disappointed to hear that this place is not honest. Had a close friend eat here earlier today, left his phone on accident came back not too long after and they claim his phone was not there even though he was able to locate it through finds my friends and GPS that clearly say it is in the restaurant. Always wondered if I should eat here since it is nearby a friend's place but seen the prices, and would rather go to Minneapolis, Saint Paul or back near my place in Brooklyn Park. Reviews on the food look decent but probably would never risk it knowing their staff is not honest. read more

My husband and I just left and honestly, this was the first time we left without finishing everything nor ask for a take out box...The restuarant location is not bad . There's parking which was nice . Its a cute family own restaurant.. The service is great. And the family are super nice, friendly, and energetic. However the food itself was pretty average. We both really liked the appetizer fried chicken and I think the tofu mix with chicken peapod stir fry was pretty good, just a lot of sauce but overall wasn't bad. However the fried rice and pad thai was a little dry for us . I dont think we both would be coming back here. Service was great but food was decent. read more

I ate here twice but forgot I ate here first with my wife. The place is a little hidden from Maplewood Mall. Anyways, I don't remember about my first time but it must have been decent. My co-worker and I just went there again last week. I had the chicken curry off the lunch special which was a generous portion. It came with egg roll which was nice and hot as well as crispy. Overall, the service was great and would come here again. Also, the spice level was pretty good for the curry too. read more

I ordered pad Thai. It wasn't padthai. It was drunken noodles stir fried in a cheap diluted soy sauce. It had all the wrong Veges in it and also the pork was the cheap processed block pork that is like the generic viet version of spam. Wtf with this dish! It fails harder than Gordon Ramsey's attempt at pad thai. read more

Missed it last time as they do not open on Sunday. Nice setup and decoration when u step in. Menu is with picture, always a plus for me. The vietnamese spring roll and pho are ok and not the best We had. The rest are highlights: grilled chicken rice and shrimp clay bowl. They are awesome, I really meant that. See the picture. The waitress is very nice and pleasant to talk to. Reasonable price too. 3.5 star but it's 70f degree and sunshine, that rounds it up to a four star. read more

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place. I'm there often. I almost always order the chicken and shrimp rice plate with spring rolls. Always perfect. Delicious! read more

A classic SE Asian restaurant. Their Vietnamese style egg rolls are delicious. I've eaten here a handful of times and found the service to be variable, but decent. Tonight my server was very good - prompt and attentive, but not hovering. The food is on par with other Thai and Vietnamese fare I've tasted. I'm fond of the sliced pork and egg roll noodle salad. Their cafe sua da and Thai tea drinks are well made. Definitely recommend! read more
