Visiting Covington/Cincinatti for the weekend, my roommate and I went to Wunderbar on a recommendation. We went for drinks, so I can't comment on the food. The tap list was diverse and reasonably priced. What really sold this place for us was the bartender, Borden. Upon hearing we were from out of town, he gave us a wonderful verbal tour of the area, and let us try some of his favorite local beers. He then gave us a few Covington/Cincinatti post cards, that I guess he'd been keeping behind the bar. Friendliest guy imaginable. Vote for Borden. read more

We loved this place. The location is small and you order at the bar but the food was delicious! Everything we got was really good and for a party of 4 we would recommend getting the following to share: a famous giant pretzel with beer cheese, a wunderbar burger on pretzel bun (ask to cut 4-ways), a pick-two with the curry-wurst, another spicy sausage &2 sides. A little hole in the wall! A co worker had told my husband about it so went there and I was thinking where in the world are we going? The Food was amazing, start with the pretzel and beer cheese! I wish I new about this place earlier! It is awesome! It is very very small and intimate. There was live music Friday night, they were really good and played a couple of original songs. My bf and I both tried the Wunderbar burger. It was alright, nothing exceptional. It was a huge portion of beef and there were sides available other than fries (zucchini, potato cake, etc.) The burger was missing some spices and it was a bit too done on the outside; but, I loved the atmosphere too much to give four stars. I have been going here for lunch every Wednesday for about a year now. They make their own sausages every day along with a few they get from Avri-Bleh. They are always fantastic. The side dishes are also fantastic. They have lots of great craft beers on tap which run around $5 a pint, a real bargain! Decided to check this place out after reading reviews as I'm a big fan of German food and beers. Was pretty disappointed with what I found. The atmosphere is pretty cool including a chalk board menu, a friendly server and a cool VW bus front that's perfect for photo-opps, but the food and drink options were sub-par. From their admittedly wide-range of beer selections, there were 2 German choices. From their food menu the incredibly large 'German Pretzel' is more akin to copious amounts of Pillsbury dough that can fill anyone's stomach. Unfortunately the food menu at this point is very limited and could use some improvement as well. After yelping for a new place to try my BF and I stumbled upon this cozy German spot. upon walking in you just grab your own seat and order at the bar. The menu is written on the blackboard behind the bar. I would suggest you try to grab a spot at the bar, you will be able to see the entire menu, and get better service since the bartenders double as servers. When it got busy, alot of people were huddling next to the drafts to flag someone down. The food was great. They have small draft selection, but many bottles on top of that. We ordered the Giant pretzel with beer cheese and these were as good as they get. Freshly made and they are the size of my head. The beer cheese was also rich and creamy. They have an awesome selection of rotating sausages. We tried a smoky mango, and wine and sage sausage. The mango was nice with a little hint of sweetness. The char on the skin also caramelized the sugars. The wine and sage was less memorable and lacking any distinctive wine flavor. There were so many other sausages we wanted to try though. Defiantly want to come back. I'm eyeing that bourbon sausage. The pick 2 also came with a side, and we chose the butternut squash. The squash was sauteed in butter and was ok, a little bland compared to the strong sausage flavors. Many people around us ordered the brussels sprouts so I would try those next time. We also ordered some pierogies which were divine. No sour cream on these though. They come 6 to an order and cover the entire plate. Each one has a nice and creamy bechemel-like sauce ontop with bacon. The dough is nice and toothsome, but the mashed potato insides could have used some herbs. Pros: great sausage selection, some German food favorites, German beers, cozy atmosphere, great vibes, Cons: service can be slow since bartenders double as servers. Cooks are also sometimes food runners. Go in expecting to get up and grab someones attention. My girlfriend and I decided to hit up Wunderbar last weekend after a couple beers at Braxton Brewery. Needless to say, it was a good decision. A friend from Covington had recommended Wunderbar quite a long time ago but I never got around to trying it. You could say I've been missing out. I didn't really know what to expect as we walked in. A crowded and small, no-frills bar is what appeared before us. What I didn't expect was how much I enjoyed the close-quarters company at the communal bench seating inside or the friendly banter that grew out of it. Everyone seemed in a good mood with the employees equally chipper and accommodating. I went with the wunderburger while my gf went the more authentic german route with a kraut/caraway sausage, brussels and kraut. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The burger was thick and juicy, just the way I like it. The bar just had a really nice, friendly and close-knit vibe to it that I feel is lost on most bars these days. My first experience at Wunderbar was a good one! We ordered a soft pretzel with beer cheese for an appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised with how huge the pretzel was! It was delicious and perfect to share. I opted for the 1 sausage/1 side option since the bartender told us that many of their sausages are made in house. Again, it was delicious and a perfect amount of food. I really want to give this place 5/5 but for some reason I feel like something is holding me back. Wunderbar is a small, family friendly bar tucked away in Covington south of Mainstrasse. It is definitely worth a visit. A group of friends went on a Saturday evening. There were a number of adults and kids ranging in age from preschool to high school. During the course of our visit, some musicians set up and performed a nice selection of tunes that added to the positive vibe of the place. You order at the bar, which can be a little confusing when the bar is a little crowded (as it was on a Saturday evening.) They are super accommodating of special dietary needs, willing to answer questions about the menu and offer up suggestions on what to order. My vegan friend was accommodated with a portobello/hummus wrap. After discussion with the chef, I ended up with a plate of veggies: asparagus, brussels sprouts, and braised cabbage. Yum! The vegetables were some of the best prepared veggies I've ever had. The BF ordered the potato soup and said it was excellent. The large pretzels and the beer cheese dip were also quite tasty. In fact, everyone that ordered items from sausages to sandwiches seemed very pleased with their food. Since I don't drink, I can't speak in regards to the beer, but I didn't hear any complaints from anyone and they seemed to have a wide variety of selections. Excellent inexpensive food in a visually-interesting location. We visited because Wunderbar was #24 on Cincinnati Magazine's top burger joints list, and we were not disappointed. Just like everyone else has said, the gigantic pretzels are delicious and the beer cheese is to die for... The bacon/cheddar burger was one of the best hamburgers I've ever had - easily in the top three of all time. The green beans and potato wedges were delicious, and although I'm not a fan of Brussels sprouts several family members said they were fantastic. 11/22/2017 UPDATE - yesterday I picked up lunch to go which included the bartender's suggestion that the curry sausage was good. It tasted great, especially with its spicy ketchup. I finally tried the beloved Brussels sprouts and totally get everyone's love affair with them. We went for a late breakfast and the three of us agree the overall rating is about 3 to 3.5 stars. The food was good as was the service. The pierogis were very good with the smoked gouda sauce and came out nice and hot and nummy. We were looking forward to the pretzel with cheese dip and were satisfied by it but not wowed. If you haven't been to Wunderbar yet, you definitely need to check this place out! Seriously, you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, everything is fresh and mostly made in house and cooked to order. The best thing also, most everything is sourced from within the local community, which is a big win for small business! For the sausage, I recommend trying the Tarragon, Atomikwurst, or the Currywurst...all three of these are amazing and I cannot recommend just one of them. If pretzel dumplings are offered that night as a side, definitely give those a try...they are AMAZING. And don't forget to get a giant pretzel, you get a lot for the price you pay but get a side of beer cheese to go alongside and I know you won't be disappointed. First visit to this casual establishment with a laid back vibe. The pretzel was huge and fresh. You order at the bar and find a spot to sit. I ordered the Reuben sandwich which was delicious--it was served on thick marbled rye bread with sour kraut and melted cheese. My husband ordered the pork schnitzel. Each came with a side and we chose a potato cake which was fried and the filling was the consistency of mashed potatoes. Again, hot, fresh and delicious. There is patio area for outside seating on picnic type tables and an area inside for live music. The interior is decorated with a super cool front of a VW bus at one end. I enjoyed my time here. Sunday lunch review. This place was really excellent. They make they own sausage and have tons of good beers to select from, both craft and imported german beers. Most of the german beer I haven't seen before either. The girl behind the bar was really nice and helpful and explained the menu since this was our first time. The pumpkin curry soup was terrific, a little chunky/thick but full of spice and flavor. I got the knockwurst and curry wurst and they were both good. You have to get the potato pancake and the gravy dumplings. They also make their own mustard and have 4 varieties. The pretzels are huge and delicious as well. The place overall was dead for lunch as we were the only ones in there. They don't allow smoking because it's such a small place and would stink up the whole joint. It's great for us nonsmokers, because now there is an awesome place in KY for food where you don't have to smell like cigarettes when you leave. Wunderbar recently opened in April and I'm not sure the location is that great, but I would definitely come back for some awesome german cuisine and brew. read more

Beer was cold and cheap, but based on my first time visit here - couldn't recommend it to anyone for anything beyond just a dive bar experience. I did go around 2:30 on a Wednesday so maybe this place changes rapidly when it gets busy at night but it was awkwardly empty in here while I was there. I ordered the pretzel and beer cheese... Wish I didn't. I could see this being somewhat popular with a group of people who were half in the bag but it was WAY too much for one person - not only was the pretzel huge but it was really, really dense and doughy. I ate a quarter of it and tossed the rest out. Waste of $8... I suggest that they highlight the density and size of the pretzel to those who order it in the future, just out of courtesy. No way this is meant for less than four people. Instead, my waitress just kind of laughed and tried to busy herself stocking the bar... She would have been better suited cleaning the place. I saw a few mouse or rat droppings in the bathroom. Not a very comforting feeling considering it's essentially attached to the kitchen. Came here seeking a quick beer and snack to hold me over before finishing my road trip back to Detroit. I make this trek between Detroit and Louisville pretty regularly, which has resulted in some pretty amazing dining experiences. This was not one of them. Saw a gift card on cincysavera.com for this place and decided to give it a try. Being a fan of another German restaurant in Newport I was hoping the food would be comparable. The food was better than I expected. We got the giant pretzel for a appetizer. I highly recommend this. It is a lot of food though. The homemade mustard was delicious. I had the curry bratwurst and my wife had the Reuben. We left very full and very satisfied. The guy at the bar was very friendly and filled our drinks promptly. You give your order at the bar. I wanted to surprise my wife at this place to tell her I got airline tickets to goto Germany to see her son getting married on July 23rd 2016. So onto the restaurant, it's very small and quaint, just a straight shot bar with a live band. The only issue I had, it was smoking place. My wife did not like it. So we sat outside in the back. I ordered a glass of Cabinet red wine for my wife. I ordered the most popular beer Spaten Optimator beer... Not too bad of a taste, so I ordered another one. The smoke bother her. After seeing a picture of the Wunderburger in Cincinnati Magazine, my 14 year old son declared that we needed to go to Covington and try this out. It was his birthday, after all, in a few days so we decided to make the trip. We were a party of nine. We arrived at Wunderbar and were welcomed immediately. We ordered food & drinks at the bar and then went to sit down at the picnic table running down the middle of the restaurant. The establishment is casual and fun. There is also outdoor seating, but we sat inside. The gigantic German soft pretzel came out pretty quickly with the beer cheese. It was hot fresh and awesome! The kids all loved it too. It was huge, but we ordered another and took some home. The Wunderburger came out and the boy was quite happy with it. We also ordered brats, which were very good, and the Brussels sprouts. Everything was great. It is hard to please four children with German food, but this was not an issue. They were all happy, full and ready to go back soon. read more
