Wunderbar has been on my list for a while, and this Saturday hubs and I finally made it over to Covington to check it out. It is as I have heard it described: a dive bar with good food. Perfect for our mission today. We ordered at the bar as a sign clearly directed. Friendly bartender took our order and later delivered our selections to our table. We had the pretzel (big! Crunchy outside soft inside, with 2 dipping sauces - I liked the beer cheeses best), the pierogi (so good!) and a bier brat with potato wedges (very tasty). Hubs had a bittberger (?) beer which he loved and I had water (lots of beer options and liquor as would expect in a dive bar, some soft drinks and water). I would say the food is German inspired -- sausages, pierogi and sides -- good and tasty basic fare. We enjoyed it. Sat at a table and felt lucky we arrived when we did because the place filled up after we placed our order. Lots of people there for the food during the day. We found easy parking on the street. We will be back -- maybe for the short brunch menu we saw listed on a side board!

Came here on the recommendation of a colleague. This is a small, cozy place with seating for maybe 30 inside, and a few tables outside. The employees were super nice, friendly and animated. They sell a variety of sausages, burgers, sandwiches and sides. Plenty of German beers to choose from, and everything is reasonably priced. The atmosphere is quiet and welcoming. I had the pork schnitzel sandwich, and a pretzel dumpling. The portions were generous, and the food was flavorful and tasty. This is going to be a new favorite spot in Covington.

Doesn't disappoint. Was in the area and decided to stop for lunch. You order at the bar and choose your seating. It's a dive bar with incredible German food. The giant pretzel is incredible with the most delicious beer cheese. I switched it up this time and ordered the broccoli. It hit the spot. When I am in this area, this is my go to stop!!!

Went on a Saturday for lunch. Street parking. Order at the bar. Friendly bartender. Really Enjoyed our giant pretzel with beer cheese (served hot) and our entrees of sausage with sides of: potato salad, pickled red cabbage, & bacon slaw.

I had lunch here two days ago while in the area and it was pretty good! You order at the bar and then the food is brought out to your table. It's a small bar that also has some outdoor seating on the patio. I ordered the Doner Kebab with a side of Sauerkraut and my husband ordered the Polish Sausage, the Curry Sausage and sides of Baked Beans and Sauerkraut. The Doner Kebab was ok. I've definitely had better. The sauerkraut was good. My husband's sausages were both delicious! I liked the curry one better - as it was a flavor bomb. But both were really tasty. The beans were good too. A little salty for my taste but my husband thought they were great. My husband's coworker joined us for lunch - I think he's a regular there based on the interaction with the server/bartender - and he had the Doner Kebab as well and the Braised Cabbage. Since neither one of us could decide on the whether we wanted the sauerkraut or the braised cabbage - he asked if I wanted to split our sides and I agreed. So glad I did! The braised cabbage was yummy! The service was good and I 'd return for more of the curry sausage and braised cabbage.

Amazing Sausages and the pretzel with beer cheese was massive! Hilarious bartender/waiter. Walked in, ordered at bar, sat down, amazing food delivered, housed it, walked out 30 minutes later. Great experience.

Wow, what an experience and I'm so glad I said yes when my daughter asked me to meet her out. It's not often that we meet up for a pub crawl. We tried the pretzel, braised cabbage, potato wedges, cucumbers salad and the Pierogies. So glad that we did. Look forward to coming back again!

This is such a fun place!! Definitely go when the weather is nice, though, because chances are you'll be sitting outside since there is not much indoor seating. The live music was incredibly loud, so I think we may have sat outdoors anyway, even if there was room inside! The food was so good- all of the sausages tried between the four of us were excellent, especially the Polish! Still drooling over that. The bacon slaw was absolutely the star of the show- I would order it again and again!

On a beautiful early fall weekend, we wandered into Wunderbar in the hopes of snagging some authentic German cuisine. Just a few miles away across the river Oktoberfest Zinzinnati was in full force. Heard reports of long lines and less food booths this year, so we tried something new on this day to channel your inner German ancestors. The space was dark and had lots of cool memorabilia on the wall. There was quite a bit of bar seating, which gave you a glimpse of activity through the front door at your left and the back door at your right. There were also several wooden tables for eating, but you have to order your food and drinks at the bar first. The food menu was pretty lengthy for a small bar (see photo) and of course, there was an amazing list of beers and ciders to choose from. The back patio was very pretty and a great place to sit back and enjoy your meal with friends. I had a Pork schnitzel sandwich on brioche bun with bacon slaw, and both tasted amazing and very, very authentic. Also tried the giant pretzel (and it was GIANT) with beer cheese. Love how the beer cheese was served steaming in an imperfect blue cup- just as if you had popped over to dinner unexpectedly and your host grabbed the nearest vessel to hold the fragrant liquid gold! Bartender/server was a super nice guy and very helpful with suggestions. Can't recall his name, but he's a redhead around 38-40 years old. Don't judge this sweet little spot by its exterior cover- wander in and get lost in the goodness that is Wunderbar!

GIANT pretzel and beer cheese

We went here on a late weekday afternoon so it was just us and a couple of regulars. The bartender (owner?) greeted us as we were walking in the door, asked if we had been there before, then explained that we needed to order at the bar, then they would bring our food to the table. He was very personable and helpful when we had a few questions. We just got a couple of beers and a GIANT pretzel with beer cheese. The pretzel wasn't that good, to be honest but the homemade beer cheese made up for it! It had a little spicy kick that set it apart from other beer cheeses I've had before. I'd definitely return here if I'm in the area.

I was on a road trip and wanted to try something different, saw this place and decided to give it a try. I got a a wonderburger with potatoes wedges and curry sausage with squash and cabbage. The burger had no seasoning at to be honest was bad ( i wish I could say something different) the potatoes were good tho. The sausage was good and the squash was good, cabbage was something different not bad at all. I wish I could give them a different review but I didn't like it. They had live music that day and that was pretty nice.

For drinks I had the hurricane, the espresso martini, I left my heart in Nola and sazerac. The alligator had good flavor but it was a tad bit tough. The fried green tomatoes were thin and I was not expecting that. The pasta, Mac and mussels had very good flavor. The blacked fish could have had more flavor in my opinion. My favorite drink was the espresso martini. It was one of the best I've ever had.

I sat in the bar so I could watch the band Mystic Mile perform, and they were great. I wish I could say as much for my Po' Boy. As shown in the photo, it was huge! As soon as I saw it, I knew I was going to need to eat some of it with a fork before I could get it down to being a manageable sandwich, especially since it had 13 nice-sized pieces of breaded shrimp. There was so much on the French bread roll that I could not even see the roll. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and tasty, and the homemade pickle slices added a nice touch. However, once I got to the point of trying to eat it as a sandwich, I was very disappointed to find that the roll had a hard crust and tough interior. It definitely was not crisp on the outside with a flaky, paper-thin crust and airy on the inside, which is how Po' Boy rolls were in NOLA. I took two bites of the roll and decided I would finish the shrimp with a fork. I ordered the Bananas Foster bread pudding for dessert. It had a great flavor, but the banana pieces were hard, like biting into an undercooked carrot. Overall the bar service was good, but the food quality was mixed since it tasted great but had some big flaws. BTW, if you're a big fan of root beer, try their draft root beer. It was extremely tasty. I wanted so much for this to be a great experience, but I have yet to decide if I'll return to give them another try.

I ordered online for pickup. I chose the federal burger (with onions, tomatoes, and provolone cheese - no grand slam sauce, which is a thousand island type of sauce, but I asked for it on the side when I got there) and a tray of smoked nachos with no jalapeños and no sour cream. I also opted to do cheese sauce on the side so that way when I got to my hotel, the nachos wouldn't be all soggy and soft. When I picked it up, I was completely impressed with the look, feel, and general ambience of the restaurant/bar. It just had a general feeling that made me wish I had been able to go with some friends. I was impressed. Unfortunately, after I walked with the food, back to my hotel, I ended up finding out that they had neglected to include the cheese sauce on the side. When I called and was directed to the manager, Rebecca, she was extremely apologetic and offered to either credit me or refire my the nachos. I said that I would love to come get them, but my burger would be cold by the time I got back she offered to re-fire the burger as well. I really wanted to have the full experience for my first time eating from Smoke Justis. Rebecca was absolutely amazing and made sure that I was taken care of well despite the issue that I had. I agreed and said that I would give the original meal to the front desk attendant at the hotel. He ended up being very excited to get a free meal, especially one from Smoke Justis. (Hint: Remember to make sure they put your cheese sauce in the bag!) Now for the food: The tray of smoked nachos were amazing and I definitely I'm glad that I got the cheese sauce. It completely pulled the dish together and it was absolutely amazing. The only problem is that they were so good that I had a harder time getting to the fries and burger. By the time I got to the fries and burger I was almost completely full. The fries were really good and they were seeming to be homemade sliced fries, but either way were great. Then I tasted the burger... wow, just wow. The flavor from the burger, was one of the best I have ever had. No sauce or anything else. Whatever they used to season the meat was incredible. Bottom line, I definitely will be back. Their commitment to excellence, both with the food and with the service, is apparent. Be good to you. Eat here.

Our server, McKenna, took great care of us the whole evening. She was friendly, engaging, accommodating, and just did an overall great job. Pro tip, go during happy hour for great prices on appetizers and drinks. The appetizer pricing was so good we were able to order more than planned. We got the duck fat fries, brussels sprouts, and buffalo chicken. The duck fat fries came with a delicious garlic aïoli. The brussels sprouts were just perfect. And the buffalo chicken with some of the best I've had in a long time. I had never had cock-a-leekie before, so I tried that too. It was a nice, warm, comfort food. For our entrées, several of us got fish and shrimp. It was delicious and the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce sauces were perfect. The highlighter of the evening for me was my mocktail. I noticed the drink menu had a cucumber elderberry drink, but I do not drink alcohol, so I ask if they would be willing to make something like it as a mocktail. It was genuinely one of the best mock tails I've ever had. It was so good. I asked if the bartender would mind sharing what she did so I could make some version of it at home. She happily obliged and wrote it down for me. Overall, a wonderful experience that will definitely have me recommending Nicholsons to friends and family!

We decided to grab two burgers and two hot dogs, the Trailer Park and the FC Dawg. We sat at the bar, just getting a couple waters, and our food came out about fifteen or twenty minutes later. We started with our burgers, not expecting much from them. But they were actually really tasty. Even for a thin patty, they were well-cooked and a bit juicy. Thin onion slices and thick tomato--exactly my preference. And the burger sauce was tangy and a bit spicy. A really great burger for just $5. Then we split the hot dogs in half. the Trailer Park was topped with Coleslaw and Grippo's. The slaw was decent and the chips weren't out of place, but as a whole the dog was a bit underseasoned. The FC Dawg is their version of a Kony, with chili, cheese, and fritos. The toppings weren't bad, but similar to the first dog, it was a bit bland. We'd both skipped lunch and for $5, we couldn't resist grabbing a couple more burgers. The dogs were 3 stars, but the burgers for the price were 5 stars, and we'll definitely be back for them.
