Wunderbar's charm lies in its quirky, kitschy neighborhood bar feel. Located in an historic building it offers a nice selection of draft beers as well as food. We went on a Saturday afternoon and noticed they also offered a weekend brunch menu. We ordered a tenderloin sandwich and a giant pretzel with beer cheese. Both were very good. Wunderbar has been on my list for a while, and this Saturday hubs and I finally made it over to Covington to check it out. It is as I have heard it described: a dive bar with good food. Perfect for our mission today. We ordered at the bar as a sign clearly directed. Friendly bartender took our order and later delivered our selections to our table. We had the pretzel (big! Crunchy outside soft inside, with 2 dipping sauces - I liked the beer cheeses best), the pierogi (so good!) and a bier brat with potato wedges (very tasty). Hubs had a bittberger (?) beer which he loved and I had water (lots of beer options and liquor as would expect in a dive bar, some soft drinks and water). I would say the food is German inspired -- sausages, pierogi and sides -- good and tasty basic fare. We enjoyed it. Sat at a table and felt lucky we arrived when we did because the place filled up after we placed our order. Lots of people there for the food during the day. We found easy parking on the street. Came here on the recommendation of a colleague. This is a small, cozy place with seating for maybe 30 inside, and a few tables outside. The employees were super nice, friendly and animated. They sell a variety of sausages, burgers, sandwiches and sides. Plenty of German beers to choose from, and everything is reasonably priced. The atmosphere is quiet and welcoming. I had the pork schnitzel sandwich, and a pretzel dumpling. The portions were generous, and the food was flavorful and tasty. This is going to be a new favorite spot in Covington. read more

Doesn't disappoint. Was in the area and decided to stop for lunch. You order at the bar and choose your seating. It's a dive bar with incredible German food. I had lunch here two days ago while in the area and it was pretty good! You order at the bar and then the food is brought out to your table. It's a small bar that also has some outdoor seating on the patio. I ordered the Doner Kebab with a side of Sauerkraut and my husband ordered the Polish Sausage, the Curry Sausage and sides of Baked Beans and Sauerkraut. The Doner Kebab was ok. I've definitely had better. The sauerkraut was good. My husband's sausages were both delicious! I liked the curry one better - as it was a flavor bomb. But both were really tasty. The beans were good too. A little salty for my taste but my husband thought they were great. My husband's coworker joined us for lunch - I think he's a regular there based on the interaction with the server/bartender - and he had the Doner Kebab as well and the Braised Cabbage. Since neither one of us could decide on the whether we wanted the sauerkraut or the braised cabbage - he asked if I wanted to split our sides and I agreed. So glad I did! The braised cabbage was yummy! The service was good and I 'd return for more of the curry sausage and braised cabbage. read more

The most recent time I had lunch at the counter of Wunderbar, I got to sit next to a group of first timers. It reminded me of how truly special this place is getting to see them experience it. Every bite is made with love. The staff make you feel like a part of their family. When the newbies had finished licking their plates clean, with ear to ear grins, they then declared Borden the best bartender in Cincinnati. And of course they are correct! This is such a fun place!! Definitely go when the weather is nice, though, because chances are you'll be sitting outside since there is not much indoor seating. The live music was incredibly loud, so I think we may have sat outdoors anyway, even if there was room inside! On a beautiful early fall weekend, we wandered into Wunderbar in the hopes of snagging some authentic German cuisine. Just a few miles away across the river Oktoberfest Zinzinnati was in full force. Heard reports of long lines and less food booths this year, so we tried something new on this day to channel your inner German ancestors. The space was dark and had lots of cool memorabilia on the wall. There was quite a bit of bar seating, which gave you a glimpse of activity through the front door at your left and the back door at your right. There were also several wooden tables for eating, but you have to order your food and drinks at the bar first. The food menu was pretty lengthy for a small bar (see photo) and of course, there was an amazing list of beers and ciders to choose from. The back patio was very pretty and a great place to sit back and enjoy your meal with friends. I had a Pork schnitzel sandwich on brioche bun with bacon slaw, and both tasted amazing and very, very authentic. Also tried the giant pretzel (and it was GIANT) with beer cheese. Love how the beer cheese was served steaming in an imperfect blue cup- just as if you had popped over to dinner unexpectedly and your host grabbed the nearest vessel to hold the fragrant liquid gold! Bartender/server was a super nice guy and very helpful with suggestions. Can't recall his name, but he's a redhead around 38-40 years old. We went here on a late weekday afternoon so it was just us and a couple of regulars. The bartender (owner?) greeted us as we were walking in the door, asked if we had been there before, then explained that we needed to order at the bar, then they would bring our food to the table. He was very personable and helpful when we had a few questions. We just got a couple of beers and a GIANT pretzel with beer cheese. The pretzel wasn't that good, to be honest but the homemade beer cheese made up for it! It had a little spicy kick that set it apart from other beer cheeses I've had before. I was on a road trip and wanted to try something different, saw this place and decided to give it a try. I got a a wonderburger with potatoes wedges and curry sausage with squash and cabbage. The burger had no seasoning at to be honest was bad ( i wish I could say something different) the potatoes were good tho. The sausage was good and the squash was good, cabbage was something different not bad at all. I wish I could give them a different review but I didn't like it. I would not really call this place a German restaurant. The selection of German food was pretty limited. Also, if I was still working for the Health Department, I would have sited them for several violations. I could see one employee in the back from where I was sitting, and he was making sausage. He was not wearing a hairnet, his long hair was pulled up in a man bun, but still no hairnet and, he had a beard which should have been covered, too. But, perhaps the worst thing was, he didn't have gloves on until he saw that I could see him, then he put them on. He also wasn't wearing an apron. Next, I saw the cook. He was bald, but still should have worn a hat, also wore no apron or gloves. The food was just okay. As I said, not very German, only a few choices. We were looking forward to some good food and left disappointed. We won't be eating there again. read more

My son decided to be adventurous a couple of days ago and decided we should try Wunderbar. We are definitely glad we did. The bierbrat and polish sausage I ordered was fantastic. He got a house made garlic and pepper sausage along with a bierbrat. The only issue we both had was that the potatoe wedges were pretty bland. I did like the fact that they didn't throw a bunch of onions in the potatoes though. For me that makes up for them being bland. Lol. I also got the sauerkraut (as good as it should have been) and he got the roasted broccoli which he did enjoy. Our server was awesome and answered any questions we had quickly and easily. The seating is....different. instead of individual tables their setup is kinda like big picnic tables. To me...that could be good or bad. While we didn't have any issues with it at the time I could easily see being seated by someone intoxicated when it gets busy. If you haven't tried Wunderbar I would definitely suggest you do so. read more

Every time my sister comes to town, this is her first choice for a meal. Old school bar, menu on a chalk board, friendly bartenders who also wait tables. It just works. I prefer vegetarian, so I usually do pierogis which are very good, but my sister digs the wunderburger. It looks spectacular. Can't say a whole lot about this place. Stopped on after a baseball game. Not my kind of vibe but my mom Picked it. We both got the giant pretzel with beer cheese. The pretzel was very good but the so called beer cheese tasted and looked like white gravy. Some seasoning would have helped. My mom got the schnitzel sandwich. She was not aware of the spicy mustard that comes on it because no where on the menu did it say what is even on the sandwich. That quickly killed her taste buds. It is very dark and small. While exploring northern Kentucky, the Fat Man and his wife wanted to check out a little bar/restaurant, and German food sounded like a good option. We wandered into Wunderbar! in Covington, KY. Wunderbar! Is a funky neighborhood nook with homemade sausages & other German nibbles, plus craft beers & a patio. My wife decided to try the Reuben with yellow squash. This sandwich was made with corned beef, rye bread, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. The corned beef was tender, sliced slightly thicker than usual, and tasted great. You got several slices. The rye bread was fresh. The sauerkraut had a good crunch with a pleasant vinegar brine taste. The Russian dressing was sweet and complimented the corned beef and kraut. The Swiss cheese melted into the sandwich, adding a nutty flavor and gooeyness. The yellow squash had a good char on it and was fresh. The Fat Man ordered the Pork schnitzel sandwich with braised cabbage, lettuce, Swiss cheese, tomato, Dijon mustard, and a garlic sauce. The pork was a good portion, pounded thin, breaded, and fried. It was juicy but slightly overcooked, giving the outer edges a burnt taste. The inner bites had good flavor and crunch. The sesame bun was fresh; the veggies were crisp. The mustard helped cut through the pork by adding an edge to the sandwich. The cheese added a salty, nutty bite, and the garlic sauce offered a mellow taste. The cabbage had a nice sweet and vinegar crunch. Wunderbar! has a full bar and an extensive beer selection; they had a live band when we were there. The place is small and offers bar chairs and small tables. The menu changes regularly; no menu is printed but written on a chalkboard at the bar. The Fat Man says that Wunderbar! is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

When I lived in London, my husband and I had a "local," a neighborhood pub where we felt welcome at any time. I'm so excited that Wunderbar is our new local! The staff is wonderful and quickly set out to get to know us. It's got a lovely outside patio area for warm sunny days and a cozy inside space. I've sampled the burgers and the sausages and the food is really, really good! My mushroom Swiss hit the spot and the side of zucchini was remarkable. Doggies are allowed outside and Clarke is partial to the pretzel (the size of a loaf of bread) and beer cheese. There's a fabulous rotating beer list and so many vegan and vegetarian options. My wife and I came here last night. I love German food, so we were definitely excited. We walked up to the bar and studied the menu for a couple minutes before ordering 2 sausage with 2 sides and the Doner Kebab, which came with a side. We sprung for the curry and cran-sage sausages, and roasted broccoli, potato wedges, and braised cabbage for the sides. My wife ordered a beer as well (I'm not much of a beer guy myself), and we took a seat. She said the beer was decent, but nothing special. Our food came out about ten minutes later and we dug right in. The potato wedges were good. Simple, but cooked through and well-seasoned. Plus they came with a bit of ketchup, and my wife's always raving about how good restaurant ketchup is. The braised cabbage was decent; good vinegar flavor. The roasted broccoli was slightly raw, unfortunately. Crunchy and not quite up to par with the other sides. The sausages were really good, though. The Cran-Sage tasted almost like a breakfast sausage, and was phenomenal with the German mustard that accompanied it. And the currywurst was spicy and filled with flavor. The Doner Kebab was not quite what I was expecting, and it was a bit inundated with sauce (tasted like mayo and sriracha, but not really sure), but overall it was very tasty. Decent kebab meat, pickled onions, tomato, and lettuce. The prices were also very reasonable for some decent food and the variety we got. The 2 sausages and 2 sides was $14 and the doner kebab plus side was $13. Either of which was plenty for a single meal. Overall, we had a good experience and will likely be back next time we're craving German food! read more
