Came to this place for the first time with a friend who said it was a great staple for him when he was in law school here. It started out great and the waitress was really kind. We sat down and waited for our food. After 30 minutes we noticed that everyone was getting their food before us. I went up and asked the waiter if our food was almost ready. She unfortunately forgot to put in our order. She was really kind about it and offered to give us our food at a discounted price and offered complimentary drinks. I asked her how long it would take cause by that time we were in there for 45 minutes. She said it would be about 15 minutes. We sat down again and everyone was being served again except us. I took another 30 minutes for us to get our food. I thought she would've maybe put our order to the front of the line but that didn't happen. By the time we got our food I wasn't really hungry anymore because of the poor service. For my first time here it was pretty disappointing and the food wasn't that great either. Maybe someone else will have a better experience but probably wouldn't recommend or come back to this place. read more

I haven't been here in years, and boy did I forget how amazing this place was! It's more amazing than I even remembered. The menu has definitely expanded and I'm excited as there are so many more things I need to come back and try. I met 3 other people and we all sampled each other's food, which was a treat as it was all so good. I had 2 different sausages. They were both great dipped in the homemade mustard, which is amazing, but if eaten alone, the garlic pepper sausage was still amazing and the other one was just good. I wish I could remember what it was called but alas... I can not. I ordered a giant pretzel to share and I was torn between the beer cheese or the spundekas. Luckily they told me I could do half and half which was awesome as they were both delicious. I seriously don't know which I prefer. The pretzel was huge, and was even delicious plain. We only ate like half of it so I got to bring leftovers home. Yay for me. It's definitely a great app for a group. My sister got pierogies to share. They were really good, but compared to the amazing quantity and pricing of everything else on the menu, they were overpriced in my opinion. Still, not enough to lower my rating of the place as I don't have to order those, there are a lot of other amazing things to eat. All of the sides were so good, that I'd honestly be fine with eating only sides lol. Apparently there are a lot of people who feel the same as they have an option to buy 4 sides for a meal @ $13. That is not bad at all! The sides I chose were the pretzel dumpling and asparagus. That pretzel dumpling though! I have never tried anything like it. One, it's super cute. Two, it's delicious. It tastes kinda like stuffing, made out of a soft pretzel that crumbles into perfection with sauce on it. It's hard to explain, just trust me, give it a try. The asparagus was perfect as well. We started with the pretzel which everyone really liked. The Pierogies were kind of bland and didn't arrive until the main meal, so much for an appetizer. I had the club and it was decent, nothing special but certainly edible. The wife had the Reuben with roasted broccoli. The broccoli was cool and the florets looked like they had been burned off with a torch. Certainly not roasted. I love divey bars that serve good food. This was my first visit to Wunderbar and it was everything I had hoped. There seemed to be a good number of regulars. It has that divey feel, but in a cool way. Our bartender was so nice and helpful. I was really happy with the sausages and the burger looked great. I have to go back to try it, but I just wanted a smaller lunch. I can't remember exactly which 2 sausages I got, but they were great, the sauerkraut was good, and even the brussels sprouts (which I normally don't like) were decent. I found Wunderbar through Yelp. They did not disappoint. If I had not been looking for this little pub, I would have missed it, I'm sure. They have one bartender, 5 large picnic type tables with benches, and something like 7 or 8 barstools. You have to go and see the bartender for any food or drinks service. You're making an Indie flick and you need an opening shot in a sketchy neighborhood. You know, you want full Halfway Houses cheek to cheek for blocks with people milling on porches filled with tank shirts just gettin' high and just gettin' by. Open your eyes and there you are at Wunderbar, a star of a dive bar just kitty corner from the corner boys. Wunderbar? I thought ample Milk Maids with braids in dirndls slingin' Pretzels and room temp beer. Oompah music blaring and sloshed beefy brawny men in Lederhosen mad clog dancing in the aisles. Nein! No reservations in any sense of the term. None needed or taken. The Decor: Pickers delight. German beer emblems, license plates, farm tools, anything and everything that can hang on a wall all anchored by the front end of a VW Bug headlights illuminating the communal picnic tables. It's the Ocktoberfest that time forgot. The room is about 60 X 20 feet. That's it. There's a Rathskeller feel to the place. Several nights a week they have live music which will change the vibe from a spot to start one of your worst hangovers to gettin' a good head knockin' and a great knockwurst at the same time. A bar tender workin' the handles like an engineer on a coal burning train greets you. Enjoy a number of rotating local craft brews and get ready to kick it. I squinted at the ceiling high ever changing chalk board menu featuring bar nibbles and substantial plates to please any trencherman or Rhinelander coal mine mole and tried to decide. A local Pierogi Princess supplies the kitchen with the Pierogi of the day. One order has 5 slider sized ravioli stuffed with whatever (potato on the night I was there) and buried in sauteed Mushrooms, Bacon, caramelized Onions and then drenched in Cream Sauce. (Think gnocchi that went to luncheon in Munchen.) It's food that will stick to your ribs and any other part of your body it comes in contact with. In 20 degree weather it would've been perfect. In 85 degree weather it was, well...perfect. I should've and could've quit there but I couldn't and wouldn't stop. My eyes had glazed over at the wonderful Wunderbar options. I asked for a Kuchenspule which is either a key instrument for performing a colonoscopy, a ritual German folk dance involving hairy chested bear hugging, or an all the way Burger the size of the Michelins on your Mercedes. This beef construction was a scaled down version of the Reichstag. A half pound of juicy prime Beef, smothered with wild Mushrooms, Swiss, Cheddar, Gouda, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Pickle all housed in a house made Pretzel Bun. Ja, Jungs and Madchen, es war toll. The only minor, minor note was that the Bun came dry. So, either ask for the German Brown Mustard or bring your own Curry Gewurz Ketchup from home. Problem solved. The next course was a platter of six house made sausages. They even make a Vegetable one which is as wrong as Tofu in Texas. There was a Hot Bleu (The Stormy Special?), Curry (three from the key), The Fever with Cayenne that would make a trophy run through a trophy wife, a two stepper Garlic Pepper and the Kraut Caraway which carried me away and finally a Hott Mett which was a spiced and cased link using everything from the kitchen sink, and none of them were a weak link. They came with Rotkraut and Bacon Slaw if you ask politely. Finally, as the EMT's were strapping me on the gurney, a voice asked if I wanted the home made Peanut or Chocolate Pie? No, I thought, who could manage that after the anchluss von essen, the Blitzkreig of Burgers and Bangers? Me, that's who. The Gym will still be there. I won't be though, I'm still immobilized just thinking about it. So, yup, I had both. They were made by the local Pie Princess daily just for Wunderbar. Both pies were as rich as Trump and just as dense. Delicious. Zo, Wunderbar es einfach Wunderbar. read more

What a great find. GPS really struggled to find, because of a median in the road. A little common sense and it's easy found. I Had the made in house spicy sausage with Brussel sprouts and my wife had the Reuben with roasted cauliflower. My sausage was amazing great flavor and texture the Brussels looked great but were extremely salty. My wife thought the Reuben was one of the best she has had, her cauliflower may have been the star of the show, fantastic. We also shared a giant pretzel with the two dipping sauces. Definitely get both, switching back and forth makes you appreciate them both even more. To top everything off, there was a solo guitar/singer playing who had a great voice. Pierogies were standard potato cheese, with some bacon and a few scattered fried onion bits, served with a good drizzle of cream. I have heard good things about Wunderbar for a long time, but hadn't made it there until last weekend. Cozy spot, order at the bar, a couple of live musicians, this place made me want to move to the neighborhood and make this my local hangout. Great bars aren't all that rare though. What makes Wunderbar exceptional is the quality of the food. We tried the giant pretzel, two of the sausages and a burger. The pretzel was good, but it was the only thing that wasn't great- it was just a little too big! The burger would compete with the best burgers in town, and the sausages were both excellent. The bar is on a dingy side street in Covington, far away from the glitz of Cincinnati. The pierogies were good. The dough was well executed. The filling was one-dimensionally potatoey but smooth. The sauce was well seasoned, savoury, and had pleasant hints of bacon crisp. The Kebab was good. A soft folded pita encircles a fair (but not generous) portion of meat. The lamb meat is nicely spiced but feel very processed on the palate. There was a lack of interesting sauces and toppings beyond the standard tomato/onion. A bite of the curry sausage I had was too finely ground (thus sandy in texture) and lacked the fat content to instill proper savouriness and greasy mouthfeel. My uncle and I were completing a Sunday morning hike one day when we decided we really, really needed food. Wunderbar has been on our radar for a while so we made the not very far trek from the westside of Cincinnati to this wonderful little place in Covington. It was bustling, but there were seats open and we got right in. I'll start with this; the place is small. It's really small, but it makes you feel right at home and maybe even a little special for getting in there and snagging a seat. It's very welcoming and friendly and the bartender is always nice. She seems like she always remembers us based on the fact that she's asked my uncle and I questions about the two of us, but when we've returned with friends and family she's asked them questions, but not us. I know that's a little out there, but it's kind of cool that she seems to remember us! When you order food you do so at the bar. If it's busy you'll get a number to take to your table, if it's not they'll just bring it out to wherever you sit. The food has always been phenomenal. We usually go for brunch on the weekends and it's always filling and delicious. My favorite is the biscuits and gravy meal. The beer selection is usually pretty good, I've never gotten a mixed drink there, but they definitely have the stuff to make them. Beyond that there decor is fun and eclectic ranging from beer signs to steins to historical drawings of Covington to decorated skateboards. There's a fun VW van in the corner that you can take your photo with and the kids always seem enamored with that. All in all I just love Wunderbar and always hope there will be an open seat for myself and my loved ones on a Sunday morning for brunch. It's a fun, intimate place to go and it always feels like home. I could spend hours there chatting with friends over a football game or just sitting at a booth by myself with a book and coffee... or a beer! read more

I really like the atmosphere of this place. It's a fun place to get a beer. I really admire that they make their own sausages in house however the fine ground of the sausage wasn't appealing to me. The flavors were great but the texture was just a bit off. Overall I would come back here for drinks and maybe try the pork schnitzel sandwich next time. This was one of the first places I 'discovered' in the Cincinnati area. It quickly became a favorite. Everytime I go, I get the same happy feeling when I enter the bar. It is just the right blend of friendly, hole-in-the-wall, and hip. It isn't trying too hard. The menu doesn't scream for attention. It's just comforting and homey food set in a random dark corner in Covington. The picnic table seating makes it even cozier. And you can catch live music, too (though it can be loud). I guess the VW bus shell on the back wall makes for a good photo op. read more

Fantastic! The bartender was very knowledgeable about food and alcohol and her recommendations were spot on. We both started with Westaphan beer which was so refreshing. We then ordered some beer cheese and a pretzel. That beer cheese was some of the best I've had and that was the largest, thickest pretzel I've seen. I ordered the Turkey Reuben and my boyfriend ordered a bacon cheeseburger. Man, like their pretzel, these sandwiches were not only delicious but massive. My Reuben probably had a 1/2 pound of tender, smoked turkey on it. Amazing! And my boyfriend's burger was juicy and flavorful. I definitely recommend this place!
