Wow, what a Cincinnati gem! It's a short way off the beaten path- but so worth it! Located off of Dalton street near Union Terminal it is hidden away in part of an old factory. Don't be fooled by this- definitely one of the most authentic and best tasting German style meals I've had in a while! They offer seasonal dishes as well as standards. We tried the Jäger schnitzel and the stuffed schnitzel- both with spaetzle as the side dish. The schnitzel was huge and hand dipped and fried perfectly. The spaetzle was also yummy. They serve a nice selection of draft German beers as well as some local ones. We decided to split an apple strudel- also scrumptious! A Little Piece of Bavaria Hidden in Cincinnati (and Yes...Even a German King Approves.) As the 98 th King of Cincinnati Kolping Schützenfest, I recently joined a dozenn fellow Kings to welcome our newest member, King Ralph, at Kantine Biergarten Eatery. Understand something: You don't invite a room full of German Kings to a German restaurant unless you're either extremely confident...or completely out of your mind.. Germans can be wonderfullly warm people. We can also become unpaid food critics the moment someone says, "authentic German cooking." Thankfully, Peter had absolutely nothing to worry about. From the first bite it became obvious this wasn't "German-inspired." This was German. The seasoning isn't loud or gimmicky. It's what German cooking should be: layered, balanced, savory, comforting, and tasting like someone has been perfecting these recipes since before Cincinnati had streetcars. Every spice knows its job. Nothing screams. Everything sings. Our group ordered nearly everything on the menu: Schnitzel Wiener Art, Kässspatzen, Bratwurst, Currywurst, Leberkäsee, pretzels, potato salad, red cabbage, desserts. If it had a German name Americans struggle to pronounce, somebody ordered it. The remarkable part? Nobody said, "Mine was okay." Instead it was, "You've got to try this!"..."No, YOU have to try THIS!"..."Wait...who ordered THAT?" For a table full of Germans who are admittedly a bit snooty about German food, that's about as close to a standing ovation as you'll ever get. Peter is one of the great pleasures of visiting. His accent is still gloriously German, thick enough that within thirty seconds you're convinced your passport should be stamped before dessert, but his English is excellent, and his enthusiasm for food, beer, and hospitality is contagious...I'm still recovering from the joyful experience. Then there's Donna. She somehow manages to be hostesss, bartender, server, diplomat, and air traffic controller depending on what the room needs. She has a timeless elegance that reminds you how genuine hospitality used to be. Friendly, quick with a smile, completely unflappable, and somehow making controlled chaos look effortless. The entire staff deserves recognition. Everyone was upbeat, genuinely happy, and seemed to enjoy working there. That kind of atmosphere can't be faked. The beer selection deserves special mention. Traditional German imports share tap space with outstanding local German-style brews, including Hofbräuhaus Newport favorites. Whether you're craving a Helles, Märzen, Dunkel, Pilsner, or Weissbier, there's something for you. Do yourself a favor and order one of the giant German beer mugs. Life is simply better when you're drinking from something that could double as emergency home-defense equipment. The setting is exactly what it should be. This isn't polished, corporate, Instagram-engineered authenticity. It's relaxed. It's comfortable. It's Cincinnati. It's Bavaria. More than half the seating is outdoors, conversations linger, strangers become table mates, and nobody seems interested in rushing you out the door. One tiny suggestion, and I truly mean tiny. The century-old building has wonderful character, but it occasionally carries a faint musty aroma. Peter, invest in an OdorStop commercial ozone generator for occasional after-hours use. It's an inexpensive fix that would make an already outstanding experience even better. But that's like criticizing the Mona Lisa because the frame needs dusting. If you want white tablecloths and waiters whispering French words they don't understand, go somewhere else. If you want authentic German food prepared by an actual German who refuses to compromise, outstanding beer, wonderful people, fair prices, true Gemütlichkeit, and one of Cincinnati's best hidden gems, go to Kantine. You'll leave full. You'll leave happy. And if you're anything like our group of German Kings, you'll already be planning your next visit before you've backed out of the parking lot. This is a truly hidden gem. On a dead end street at the beginning of Harrison Ave where it's "interrupted" by I-75, there's plenty of street parking. You've got to be observant or you might miss the place. Housed in what I suspect is an old factory and operated by a skeleton crew, this place gets it right. Order at the counter and they'll bring your food to whatever eclectic spot you choose to sit. The food is prepared where you can clearly see the cook. The care taken when preparing the food seems extraordinary in today's automated rush rush world. I would recommend this place without hesitation. The people here are very kind. I came in for Easter and they were short-staffed due to call outs. We reserved a table for Easter. The food was good and the drinks were poured heavy. I got the sweet pancakes which had nutella, bananas inside, and strawberry outside. They taste like crepes. The environment is family friendly. When you get drinks you have to individually pick them up, but they bring the food to you. I would definitely come back and try the Avocado Tomato Egg sandwich. What to say first....Let's start with the friendly faces that greet you as you enter this fabulous eatery. Every single person is as kind and helpful as the next. They are also kind to one another! You'll order at the counter by the menu board. They'll give you a number, ask if you're dining inside or out, and you find yourself some seating. Easy peasy. Oh, and if you fancy a beer, try the Veltins Pilsner --I typically do not even like beer, but this one goes down smooth! Next--the food. It's all delicious, but you'll definitely want try the goulash or bavarian fleischpflanzerl, whenever they run it as a special. This was a great find for a recent Saturday lunch. It was a warm day for April and it was pretty warm inside, but luckily we got a picnic table in the shade right out front. There seemed to be just one front of house person taking orders and pouring drinks, so there was a bit of a wait to order. They were unfortunately out of the cheese/onion spätzle so my fiance ordered currywurst instead. The rest of us ordered schnitzel with buttered spätzle. When the plates were set down, my finance immediately said he had plate envy. The schnitzels were huge and amazing. The buttered spätzle was the best I've had locally, both in texture and taste. The pork was pounded thin and fried but remained so tender and juicy. The currywurst was a bit of a let down for my finance. He said it seemed like regular wursts, with regular ketchup and some curry powder sprinkled on top. There was also not much ketchup. Maybe we are just used to Germany where they are swimming in a curry ketchup. The potatoes were great however. My wife and I went on an underground tour of Cincinnati and learned about the German beer making history of the city. One question I asked was - Is there a decent German restaurant left in town? My wife and I just love this place and have been here several times. You'll need to forgive the odd location; an industrial area off of Spring Grove Avenue and almost underneath the Western Hills Viaduct BUT IT'S WORTH IT! You place an order at the counter then the food is delivered to your table while they pour you a draft that you take on your own. A gem of an eclectic German oriented restaurant in a slightly out-of-the-way place with great food, Beer, and occasionally music. The schnitzel is as good as you've had. Our meal was delightful, we especially enjoyed the authentic German offerings. 2 of us had salmon with risotto ( not on the printed menu , a special written on a light-up board) and they are still talking it up ! The dessert offerings were less than we wanted and I hold out hope that a real fruit strudel will someday be offered. Okay, no one comes here by accident. It's in a warehouse at the end of a dead-end street; you have to know that it's there. It has a small parking lot and then you need to park out on the street, and you have to walk up from the parking lot to find the entrance, which was propped open to allow for entry. Inside, the atmosphere is very laid-back: a small space, a scattering of tables -- it's a cross between a beer hall and a German friend's home. You order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. I ordered the Wurstsalat -- basically a salad of sausage, pickles and cheese. This is German food -- there wasn't a piece of lettuce or other salad green in sight. But it was plentiful, delicious and authentic, with a nice vinegar dressing to give it a zing. It came with generous slices of Blue Oven wholewheat bread that was hearty and filling and complimented the salad well. For dessert I had their "Bee Sting cake:" decadent layers of cake, caramel, and a cream filling that was delicious and satisfying. This is definitely legit food -- made from scratch on site, and so authentic to the German culture you expected to see a generation of family pictures on the wall. One proviso: this is a place to savor. The food is made from scratch, so most dishes (excepting the salad and other cold dishes) will take 45 minutes to prepare, while you conversate with friends and enjoy the ambience.
