I'm a huge fan of cool, hip restaurants, so walking in, I immediately noticed the ambiance - dark, candle-lit, hip. Came here with 2 other people on a Tuesday night, and for how busy it was I was impressed with how quickly we got seated. We were seated in the long family style table, so if you're okay with getting a little close to your neighbours, you won't have a problem seating here. Everything on the food menu looked delicious! If you're a fan of different bbq meats and family-style comfort food (with a twist), then you'll love this place. The portion sizes are made for sharing, so it's a really great way to try different things on the menu without committing to a full dish. The drink menu also looked awesome - I just got a glass of the feature red wine blend, and I was a huge fan. Being such small portions of food, everything came out super quickly, which I was also impressed with for how bumping it was. I got the small portion of the massive attack salad and wow was it good! It comes with tempura battered-deep fried broccoli, which is the perfect reason to get the salad itself. I would also recommend getting the mac and cheese, because it was amaze-balls. We were visiting Denver for the weekend and were overwhelmed with the number of amazing places to eat in the heart of downtown. However, a handful of locals recommended Work & Class, so we decided to give it a try on a Friday evening. As someone who is gluten-free and dairy-free, I wasn't sure how much I would be able to eat, but I decided to give it a try after perusing the delicious menu. We didn't have to wait for a table for two, and were immediately seated. The waiter was very knowledgeable about what I would be able to eat, and was willing to help make accommodations so that I could enjoy some of the tapas/family-style options. I ended up getting the cajun spiced rotisserie-style chicken and fried plantains, and everything was delicious! Let's also talk about the fact that my boyfriend ordered the lemon-butter rotisserie-style chicken and the mac and cheese, and literally wouldn't stop talking about that meal for days. The portions are on the smaller side, so it's perfect to order a few different sides/entrees and share amongst the table, if you're able to. Fantastic evening celebrating my husband's birthday. Wow! Matt was very knowledgeable, and told us he'd help us manage portions if we told him what we wanted. He brought the perfect amount of food for our group of 9, and everyone got to try a bit of everything. Incredible service. They don't take reservations, but they told us to get there right at 5 so we could snag the big table, which we did. It was a fantastic night of excellent food. I'd like to start my review with a shout out to Kelly T, with whom I had a lady-date for Work & Class. Not only did she suggest this spot, she was kind enough to turn up way earlier than me, put our name in for a seat and do the waiting (while drinking a beer of course.) Because of Kelly I essentially showed up and was seated immediately at Work & Class, a feat practically unheard of and one that made me happy because I hate waiting. Now for the details... the atmosphere is positively squashed. It's the price of being popular and it doesn't bother me, but if you don't like crowded places then this restaurant might not be for you. Case in point, we had to wait for 3 people to squeeze out of their seats and leave before we could squeeze down the "aisle" and get to our place at the community table. Once seated it's not too crazy though. Even at the community table I didn't feel any more crowded than I would at other restaurants. And the service somehow remains lovely, even in the face of the crowd and the coolness. I never felt ignored or unwanted. It was fantastic. Also, here's a secret - there is a reason it's crowded and that reason is the delicious food and the super hip environment. I like to believe my cool points percentage went up at least half a point for just having had one dinner here. And I know my tastebud satisfaction went to 11 after my meal. Kelly and I shared a number of things, from fried plantains (some of my favorites) to chickpea croquettes, from short ribs to empanadas. As you can see there is a definite Latin flair to this American menu and it's grand. As everyone else has said get the butterscotch pudding. You get to also pick the portions of meats with 1/4, 1/2 and 1 pounds and size of sides We had the lamb that was perfectly cooked, pink in the middle and lightly seasoned with peppercorns, we also had the goat that was served with a broth and was amazing and pork with slaw that was also tender and delicious. We went to Work & Class again last night. I think this is one of, if not my favorite restaurant in Denver. This time I ordered the Rosemary Chicken, plantains, and a biscuit. The chicken was so moist and delicious. These plantains may be my favorite plantains dish. They're served with a creamy chipotle sauce, which compliments with grilled sweetness of the plantains so well. The biscuit is warm and it falls apart while you eat it. For dessert, I ordered the strawberry rhubarb cobbler. This was warm and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delicious, although possibly a little too sweet for my liking, but I'm very picky about desserts. The service, as before, was outstanding. Your needs are fully attended to the entire night, despite the fact that they're busy on a regular basis. Yes, there is a wait, but for a party of two, I think we only waited 30 minutes, which really isn't bad compared to other high-end restaurants such as Root Down and Linger. And they offer a $4 "wait cocktail" - this is a specialty cocktail that changes on a daily basis. It's sold for a bargain price of $4 as an offering for the wait. Check. This. Place. Out! Or don't... Good food and prices you can't go wrong here! Small restaurant with indoor and outdoor patio seating. Has a modern decor and feel to it. I sat at the bar cause it was the only place with immediate avaliable seating. I started with the shrimp and grits and the NJ meatballs. The shrimp and grits are made with roasted poblano and Anaheim peppers, garlic, parmesean, and cream cheese. Never had it with cream cheese! It was rich and creamy and tasty. The NJ Ernies meatballs are made with pork and veal on a bed of cheesy palenta with spicy tomato sauce and parmesean. Good tasting combination with the meatballs and palenta. For my main course I had the 1/4 pound of lamb and braised short ribs and a order of corn bread. The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned with coriander and spices. So tender and juicy. The braised short ribs were so tender and juicy you can cut it with your fork. The corn bread was hot and flaky. Complimented the meats perfectly. The staff was very attentive and friendly. This place has a trendy feel in a trendy party of town with a trendy menu to boot. I almost felt like I might not be cool enough to eat here when I first put my name in. But who are we kidding? I'm totally cool enough to eat here! First, the wait to get in was long - about 50 minutes on a Saturday night. The space is small, so seating is pretty limited, but once you get a seat, you'll be happy you waited. I dined here with the lovely Miss Tiffany N and we got a lot of yummy bites to eat: fried plantains, blue corn empanadas, chickpea croquettes, roasted brussel sprouts, short ribs and lamb. All of the dishes were great! I particularly liked the chickpea croquettes and the dipping sauce that came with them. My lamb came out too rare for my tastes (red in the center), but when I mentioned it, they took them right back and fixed them and they were delish. Lastly, we had dessert. If you get nothing else in this restaurant GET THE BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING. It's face meltingly good. A note for parties of two: the majority of the table in this place are four tops, so parties of two are typically sat at the long community table running down the center of the room, so be prepared to sit next to a stranger or make friends with a new person. read more

I think if this place weren't so super hypey, it would maaaaaybe be a four star spot to me. Approachable food, great happy hour, and a hip location inside of repurposed shipping containers. If it wasn't busy all the time, it would be pretty cool. But as it is, it's so cramped and loud that it's a little bit anxiety inducing to me. I just want to get my drinks and food and get the hell out (and I think the hosts/servers want that too since it's always busy and there's always a wait). The drinks are pretty solid. Not overly fussy and not overly priced. Pick a house made mixer and what kind of booze you want. Done. Decent beer list too. The food is approachable/hearty fare (although the portions are a bit on the smaller side). I haven't had anything that's blown my hair back, but it's solid. I've had the Massive Attack salad and it could use a little something. I like all of the ingredients on their own (avocado, tempura broccoli, asparagus, and cheese), but there's nothing that makes this salad pop and flavor is very one noted. Chile cheese fries are awesome, but no surprise there. I wish they had a veggie entree or fish entree that wasn't fried catfish. The entrees are fairly meat-centric and I think that's where the menu is lost on me. Would it be a great, casual HH spot if it wasn't so overly hyped? Absolutely! But as it is now with the tightly packed space and hour long wait, I don't see the appeal. Work & Class is worth the hype for 3 simple but elegant reasons: a cool space, a well executed theme, and excellent food. It's not a 5 because the service, while good, is not top notch. Let's break it down. The restaurant, a nearby coffee shop and an outdoor store are all inside a set of joined shipping containers; while brand new, the complex blends perfectly in the Rhino neighborhood. The only other time I have seen something like this is in downtown Las Vegas. I love that Denver has such a fun an innovative concept, and the shipping containers add an edgy, industrial feel to the restaurant. Well played. The theme of the restaurant is well executed from the typeface on the menu (with graphics from the logo), the decor and even the serving dishes (which are round metal pans). All add the "working class with class" feel I believe the restaurant is going for, which I loved. The food is also excellent. The short rib melts in your mouth and the gravy continues the flavor train. The sweet potato fries are the things dreams are made of (perfect blend of crispy, salty fun) and the desserts...Oh, the desserts! Do yourself a favor and order all of them, like our group did. The favorite was a tie between the apply whisky pastry (flaky, sweet without giving you a sugar rush) and the banana chocolate cake (a little more of a creamy, sweet sweet treat). We also tried the brussels' sprouts and macaroni and cheese; the consensus was that all were good, but not good enough to order again. So, the service was good. Food came out fast, when items didn't come out as planned, adjustments were made, and the server gave us the requisite spiel about the restaurant. However, he wasn't as engaged as I might have expect. That said, it was very busy and that may not have been feasible. I am a huge fan of W&C! Every single time we have been, we have experienced great service, solid drinks, and fantastic food! Once upon a time, this used to be a sketchy part of town. The first time I was asked here for a friend's birthday and I was a bit hesitant. However, all skepticism aside, this part of five points is getting revamped and is starting to look like much of the nicer parts of town! (Definitely don't let location put you off!) The food here is always top notch! Surprisingly, one of my main staples and new favorites to order here is their vegetarian (or vegan?) green chili... Trust me, I was just as skeptical as you may be reading this - but their green chili is the shiznitz! I am a full-on carnivore like most of you, and I will stand by my affirmation that their green chili is some of the best I have ever had! Other favorites that are a MUST when dining at W&C include their cornbread, Brussel sprouts, the short ribs, and the mac & cheese. What is nice about this place is the ability to order and try a lot of things at once. Their meat selection has been hit or miss for me, but never terrible. For example, the first time I cam here I ordered the rotisserie chicken, which was super juicy and flavorful, however the last time we went, my chicken was a tad bit dry and seasonless. It is still on the radar of many and is continually getting praise across the city, so suggestions would include getting here early if possible (especially because they don't take reservations!). We were told by our host that you should just order two or three things and then pass everything around. I think the six of us ordered 12-14 different things and everyone just tried every thing. It was outstanding! The brisket and mac and cheese were my favorites of the night. The drinks are very stout so be careful and have a ride home. However, if you are looking for a nice quite dinner, you should just turn around now. This place is LOUD! If you are hard of hearing and need people to repeat things often anyways, this is not the place for you. Last week we went to Work & Class with a party of 6. We knew that reservations were not accepted and went early (5:30)... Still a 2 hour wait!! Not a big deal... They took our cell number and sent us across the street to DaDa Art Bar with a 20% off card (great example of partnership marketing)!!! We were called for our table in less than the time quoted... AWESOME!!! But then were told us that if we were not across the street immediately the table would be given away. WHAT??? YOU sent us across the street and it's impossible to "immediately" cash out and get back to be seated. We negotiated 5 minutes. We were seated promptly upon arriving back, at the community table just beyond the front door. I get the concept of a community table "a place to satisfy our longing for community", but in my opinion, a community table is a way for restaurants to squeeze in more diners. In our case, it was noisy, awkward seating for a party of 6 trying to communicate. My poor left-handed husband spent the night apologizing to the right handed diner on his left. I think that the Work & Class community table would be great for happy hour... Not a dining experience. The food at Work & Class was unique in presentation and full of interesting, pleasing flavors. We started with the PEPPERS FIVE WAYS and BLUE CORN EMPANADAS. We then added the RED-CHILE BRAISED PORK, ROASTED GOAT, CITRUS-MUSTARD BRAISED SHORT RIB, CORIANDER ROASTED COLORADO LAMB, CHIPOTLE-CHEESY TOMATO MAC and BRUSSELS SPROUT, APPLE & BACON HASH. We LOVED everything!! NOTE: Our server asked if we were in for appetizers or dinner... We told him dinner. We also told him that we wanted the apps to at least provide one per person (6) and that the entrees (ordered by the pound) and sides (large or small) needed to be enough for a meal for each in our party. He stated that he is an expert at the menu and ordering for groups... We counted on this knowledge. The apps were enough for each person when cut into thirds and the entrees/sides were enough for a tablespoon of each item. All in all... I loved the building (made out of shipping containers), the decor, the atmosphere and the food. My husband and I ordered the roasted lamb, bbq brisket Mac and cheese, greens and a piece of the strawberry rhubarb cheesecake to go. Flavors were all really good across the board. I'm not usually a big fan of lamb, but these chops were cooked perfectly and the coriander added a nice touch. The cheesecake was divine, sweet and tangy, creamy and crunchy, everything that you could want in a dessert. The brisket was roasted or braised, not smoked as I expected so it was quite soft. It was no biggie; we weren't starving and actually ventured off to Dada to have some drinks while we waited. They were nice enough to give us a card to get a discount there. We actually got to sit at the chef's table, which I LOVE doing. Love watching the kitchen going at full force. Work and Class is like a kids menu with adult food. Very trendy place in Denver. We decided to wait over an hour for a table and went to the bar across the street. The restaurant is really small (like the portions), so be prepared to wait and to be very comfortable with your neighbors. We didn't mind though! The food is very tasty, but I just wish the portions were slightly larger. Not sure if that is the gluttonous Texan in me taking. Their portion recommendations are "1/4 pound is for 1 person and 1/2 pound is for someone who can eat". There were 4 of us and we all ordered a different meat: lamb, goat, chicken, and brisket. The chicken was pretty much one wing. The other meats were really tasty and cooked well. We ordered 2 appetizers and had to he an extra of each since the meatballs only came with 3. They were about $9 which I thought was crazy. But again, they were good. The sizes are delicious and are good to order to share. We got about 4 regular sizes and shared. Definitely give work and class a visit if you're looking for a trendy spot on a night out, but expect to wait and to be served very teeny tiny portions. read more

I had to go here to see what the hype was all about. The atmosphere was great... A small restaurant with a fun vibe. We got there at 8:00 on a Saturday night expecting a wait...we got one. "45 minutes to an hour, but feel free to wait at the overcrowded bar that has 8 seats and has 25 people hovering over them right now" said the waitress (i might have fabricated that a little bit). We squeezed into a small nook and ordered a few drinks. I found their drink menu to be pretty impressive. Lots of good beers and wines, as well as some nice cocktails. I got the Spicy Basil Sour Vodka Cocktail. It was actually quite nice, and you could really taste the basil. However, it was really one of those drinks that you could only drink one of. We decided to order a couple appetizers from the bar while we waited for our table. We got the Peppers 5 Ways, and the Meatballs. The peppers were good, but nothing special. It came with a couple fried peppers, a couple bacon wrapped jalapenos, some picked pepper mixture, some grilled peppers and this awesome pepper jam. They also through on a couple pieces of grilled bread on the plate, which dipped in the jam was by far the best part. The meatballs, tasted like meatballs. Nothing special at all. The polenta it was served on top of was fine. Now our table was ready. We thought that it would be a good idea to order every entree item so we didn't miss anything...that's what we did. Now one thing I really like about this place is that you can order the entrees in 1/4 1/2 or full pound orders, allowing you to try multiple things. We ordered the Colorado Lamb, the Cochinita (braised pork), the Short Rib, the Roasted Goat, the Fried Catfish, and the Rotisserie Chicken Buffalo Style for the entrees. For the sides we ordered the Roasted Brussels Sprouts, the Sweet Potato and Bacon Hash, and the Cheddar Mashers. Here we go..... Why did I try the lamb first!?!?! The Lamb was absolutely fantastic leading everything else to go downhill from there. It was seasoned just right and cooked to perfection at a just over a medium rare temperature. However, we ordered a quarter pound of that, and it felt like the portion was much smaller. The Braised Pork was good, It came with a nice slaw mixture and a few tortillas to make tacos. It was nothing special, and a little salty. I was a little disappointed by the Short Rib, but this is probably because I am a Short Rib snob. It wasn't bad, but the Short Rib at Elway's and Bittersweet (just to name a couple places) destroys it. Decent flavor, and very tender. The Goat...who eat's Goat? I didn't even know what to expect. It was interesting, and I will probably never eat Goat again. My friends enjoyed it, so go for it if you want to order it. The Fried Catfish tasted like any good fried fish tastes. To me it was an unnecessary menu item at a place like this. Finally the Buffalo Chicken. This was actually very good. The buffalo sauce was pretty wonderful and the chicken very extremely juicy throughout. This was my 2nd favorite item on the menu after the Lamb. The sides were fine, but nothing unbelievable. The Mashed Potatoes were good as expected, the Brussels Sprouts were fine, and the Bacon Hash was ok. My friend loved the Bacon Hash though, so maybe I am wrong on that one (probably not). Overall this place is a lot of fun with a very eclectic mix of menu items. It is also very reasonably priced, and a great spot to go with a date or someone that is willing to share food.
