This is only my second time here. My first visit roughly 5yrs ago, which was takeout because it was too packed, left such a lasting flavor memory I couldn't get it out of my mind. Getting a seat here has still proven completely impossible but if you're lucky or have time to kill waiting for a seat is definitely worthwhile. Sadly they cater to larger groups for reservations but the restaurant is set up for couples mainly.... The tables aren't wiped down to a point of cleanliness or even dryness. Ours and the two on our sides were oily and moist. Then to make all that better the contents of the table are lapped up by the floor oppose to the rag or a hand. Anyhow that's that and although it's been a long while since I've been in a place that does this I was hungry and excited to finally be back. The only con was the sesame noodle. The flavors were quite tasty but sadly the noodles were over cooked to the point of mush in you're hand :( I loved the tofu rice dish however, if they had add ons it would have been greatly improved with an animal product. From my first bite I would have liked to taste lamb or rooster, but even pig or a perfect sunny side egg. The eggplant appetizer was on of the highlights of our eats. I wish the cuts were uniformed and thick as the thinner pieces were more chip style (which was nice but seeing as majority of the pieces were meatier it's clear to say that was the style they were aiming for). The sauce in the eggplant dish *drool* I'd liked that bottled please! The clam basil although I devoured I can't get over how salty it actually was. The basil was so fresh, clams perfectly cooked and the scallion pancakes I have no words. They were just perfection. After having the saddest scallion free dough pancakes at their other location these were a welcomed sight. The cocktails are perfectly mixed. The flavor of the Buddha bless had an interesting flavor. The flavor was faint but a hint of licorice definitely shined, if licorice was actually tasty. I used to really like this place, but I feel like this last visit went downhill 1. The wait: we went on a Sunday and I understand that it gets busy, but it took over 1.5 hours to get seated :( 2. Sesame noodles: For almost $30, these noodles were not worth it. It was good, but there weren't a lot of noodles and it was cold. There were also a looooot of peanuts so if you're into that it could be nice. Personally I felt like it overpowered the sesame flavor and the roasted peanuts were too hard for my liking. 3. Lu rou fan: I did not like this. There was way too much rice and not enough meat - and this dish was again close to $30. Not worth it in my opinion, and the meat sauce lacked flavor. Wouldn't get again and wouldn't recommend. 4. Dan bing: this was basically a really thin scallion pancake fried with a layer of egg. This was delicious, it was soft, spongy and flavourful, but I didn't think it was worth $15. This dish is a really staple food in Taiwan and super easy (and cheap) to make at home, as much as I liked how it tasted, it was definitely overpriced. Overall in this neighborhood there's not much good Asian food so I understand why it gets so busy. The quality of this restaurant has gone down so much since I first tried it a year ago. The prices are also double what they used to be. I hate writing bad reviews but honestly this was such a disappointment coming back and taking my friends here. Before, I used to think this was an authentic delicious taiwanese restaurant but it's become extremely commercialized and Americanized and lacks any quality or flavor. For Asian food in Brooklyn--birds of a feather is THE best and wen wen is so much better for Taiwanese food. My favorite dishes here are the oyster omelette and the fried eggplants. Beef rolls - $31, tiny portions and honestly extremely lacking in flavor and quality. You can literally find better beef rolls at any other Chinese restaurant for less than half the price. I had heard a lot about this restaurant and knew I had to give it a try. I am so glad that I did. There was so much good food on the table! A fantastic dinner all around and a place I'll have to visit anytime I'm in New York. The service was also great. They don't take reservations for parties of less than 6 people so plan accordingly. On a weekday night the dining room was nearly full. Scallion Pancake - Light and fluffy. Dipping it into the chili sauce from the pan-griddled pork buns was transformative to save the least. Sloppy Bao - Really really good. The pork and peanut combo in the warm, soft bao was incredibly rich. If you're into textures, get this. Each order comes with two. Pan-Griddled Pork Buns - The dish was so nice I had to order it twice. The thickness of the skin is less like a bun and more like a dumpling. However they've definitely pan seared the outsides to make them delightfully crispy. I'd buy the chili vinaigrette bottled. It was that good! The whole table found themselves adding it to other dishes. Lu Rou Fan - Was it otherworldly? No. But it's the kind of comfort food you crave and they nailed the flavor. It was a great dish to share. Danzi Mian - My least favorite dish of the night because the broth lacked flavor. Again, I was reaching for the chili  vinaigrette to spruce it up! The pork also got a little lost. Win Son has been on my bucket list for a long time, so when I saw they were finally on Resy i made a reservation immediately! This restaurant easily deserves its hype, and has made it's way on my NYC favorite restaurants list! I made a reservation for 6 people, but ended up having to increase it to 7; I called in advance and the host was super accommodating and changed my reservation with no hesitation! We ended up sitting at a round table with a lazy susan, which was perfect for our group. We ordered 9 dishes for a party of 7: pea shoots - 4/5: garlic pea shoots are a staple at Chinese restaurants for a reason, a solid vegetable choice here egg bomb - 3.5/5: beware this is *very* difficult to share. the beef tartare was good! i thought this dish was very unwieldy and hard to eat, which is the main reason for stars off. pan-griddled pork buns - 5/5: delicious, savory, spicy, comforting. clams & basil - 3/5: i thought the combination of sweet potato and clams was slightly off-putting and the scallion pancake was soggy. if clams are your thing though, you'll probably like this! guojie salad - 4/5: (we asked for shrimp on the side) the peanut sauce in this salad is divine, I want to replicate it at home. big chicken bun - 6/5: definitely order this! i love chicken sandwiches, but i especially love this one. we ended up dividing this among the 7 of us, but i could *easily* eat this whole thing on my own. so good! lu rou fan - 5/5: another must order! lu rou fan as a concept will never taste bad, but win son's take on it is full of flavor and texture. sesame noodles - 5/5: if you don't like mushrooms, this is not for you! the mushroom flavor in this dish intertwines beautifully with the sesame sauce. this dish is a true umami explosion zhajiangmian - 4.5/5: this is not a korean jjajjangmyeon-- it's light brown and mostly flavored with fermented bean sauce. the lamb in this dish is delicious! Between the 7 of us, this was just about the perfect amount of food! Overall: Win Son does a really good take on Taiwanese-American food full of comfort and familiar flavors with excellent execution. This place is probably one of the best spots I've tried in NYC. Given that it's New York, I think that's saying a lot. We walked in as a party of four with no reservation and we're seated immediately (around 7 pm on a Tuesday). The staff is quick to greet you and take your drink order (the cocktails and the beer are equally good so do either!) I think this was one of the first times I've had Taiwanese, but absolutely not the last. We started with a scallion pancake burrito that was crispy, tender, juicy, and delicious. We got two different rice bowls and both were amazing. I especially loved the abundance of cilantro in all the food (warning if you don't like cilantro make that known). I recommend doing a mix of the noodle and rice dishes as well as the pork buns to try all the variety. 5/5 experience - will be going back soon. Definitely a Brooklyn favorite. read more

3.5 This review is for the restaurant and not for the bakery. Ambiance is a bustling American diner with tight seating but not too overcrowded. Service is curt and straightforward. I really wanted to like the food and was curious to see how Taiwanese food would be fused with Western elements. Ordered Lu rou fan, sesame noodles, scallion pancakes, Wu yu zi noodles and oyster pancake. Food started off strong! Scallion pancakes had a chewy/crunchy texture. Would say texture was done so well that it's worth ordering. Oyster omelette exceeded my expectations. Now, I think they made it so omelette that it tasted less like a remix and more like a different dish. But it was a positive innovation. They had a green sauce that paired well but most importantly, the gelatin part of the pancake did the og justice. Wu yu zi noodles was a sleeper. I would compare it to a saucy uni garlic noodles and glad I ordered it. Usually the Wu yu zi is pungent on its own. Get it if you want saucy noodles! Sesame noodles was wtf. Not thick enough to be sesame and not flavorful enough to know what it is. Mushrooms is a head scratcher. Don't know who the demographic is for this dish. Lu rou fan was the biggest disappointment when comparing it to its og form. Lu rou fan is perfected based on how you utilize soy sauce, shallots and your secret ingredients. Five spice is usually optional and you have to avoid making the five spice powder taste too strongly. Cinnamon is one of the five spices and literally that's all I could taste. Broke it down because this taste is a big no no . It's like slapping ketchup on oyster pancake and saying that's American Taiwanese fusion. There was a lot of hype about this restaurant so I was excited to finally get to try it. The line was out the door on a Saturday afternoon. Once you get in, you place the order and the seating is first come first serve. Overall, I thought the scallion pancake sandwiches were a bit greasy and oily, but decent. The fan tuan was on the smaller side but it had a good ride to filling ratio. We also tried the Bolo bun and toffee chocolate chip cookie which were both excellent. I don't recommend the turnip cake. TLDR: Win Son brings a new kind of cuisine, Taiwanese American. Super unique dishes but all are packed with flavor and insanely delicious. It does get crowded, so plan your visit out or be ready to wait a bit. I had the pleasure of eating at Win Son prior to COVID-19 and also getting takeout during the lockdown. The menu now has been simplified but there's a lot of incredible choices. Lu Rou Fan - Braised fatty ground pork over rice. It melts in your mouth and it's easy to start shoveling spoons of this because it's so tasty. Sesame Noodles - Think of Chinese takeout noodles (not in a bad way) and imagine them at just the highest level. These are so flavorful, tossed with this black sesame and trumpet puree. When you think of noodles that make you happy, it's definitely something like this. Big Chicken - Massive fried chicken sandwich. The bun is super unique as it's almost like a pastry bun. Danzimian - This is a bit different than the actual dish I've had in Taiwan. The broth is what makes this dish so special, the flavors have almost been reduced down that the flavor is incredibly concentrated. It has a shellfish taste, it's porky, it's damn tasty. Don't worry, the open window isn't viewable from the street or apts, I think, don't worry, it's fine. So the food is spendy. Started with the sloppy bao...it's covered in peanuts (the sloppy part) and I found it to be more texture than flavor. Def pillowy tho! Had the pea-shoots and the flavor was really good! It was however pricey for a non-protein. Also had the chicken + sesame waffles... At almost $30 we felt there could have been more than 1 square of waffle cut into 4 smaller triangle pieces. The chicken was battered with what seems like the rice version of pop chips. Although crispy and light it easily separates from the chicken. I'm not sure if the chicken we got was 100% coated either. I really had my doubts about this place since sometimes fusion restaurants can be a little questionable - occasionally fusion places just do way too much that the food loses all original authenticity But not Win Son! Everything was incredible, with flavors I can't even describe but still tastes like the authentic Taiwanese dishes that I know and love. Went back for a second visit and the review still stands at a firm 3.5/5. We ordered a bunch of food this time, but my main gripes were portion sizes being relatively small compared to the price charged: such as marinated cucumbers. The pan fried buns being relatively undercooked (too doughy) and everything being wayy too over seasoned/salted. Lastly, I understand that the restaurant takes a different spin on Taiwanese food but you order the Zhajianmian for example and you have a familiar taste in your mind, but then you try it and it's pretty far away from the familiar taste. The food also came out kind of slow and scattered, so we were eating cucumbers as a table, pea shoots as a table and sometimes just the hot chilli oil on the table because we wouldn't have food for ~15 minutes or so. Went to this joint with my sister and it was great! They have my favorite beer on tap - Hitachino Nest White Ale - so I knew this was gonna be dope af. We had the fried eggplant, scallion pancakes, and the fly head's tofu! It was ALL SO GOOD! The staff are super friendly and helpful, and the space is inviting and warm. It was so nourishing and delish and refreshing and just about every other adjective you're looking for when describing a solo veg dish. tián dou jiang sweet house-made soy milk + you tiao when i say i was drinking sweet soy milk out of the bowl and licking my spoon, i mean it. did not like soy milk going into to it, now simply cannot live without it. Everything me and my friend had was excellent! We went at 550pm on a Sunday night and got a seat immediately at the bar or the backyard, but we didn't want to sit outside in 40 degrees so we sat at the bar. The seats are just stools, no backs but there's a place to hang your coat right near it. We got the cucumbers, sesame noodles, sloppy bao- these were my favorites and we also go the fly's head which was good but my least favorite. The cocktails looked good, especially there was one with lychee and gin but i didn't get a cocktail. My friend and i were able to sit and just drink water for a while and talk and were not rushed to go. Our food came out one by one and those 4 dishes were perfect for two hungry girls. We weren't starving but just hungry and left full. I've been to the bakery and that's excellent and easier to get, not much of a wait. read more

I think win son is doing Asian fusion the right way, with very interesting mixed drinks and a cool ambiance. Everything we tried was very flavorful and incorporated a western touch into some traditional dishes. The fried eggplant was amazing and had a sauce with sour cream as the main ingredient, which probably wouldn't be found in most Asian kitchens. The sesame noodles with mushrooms were also a hit, as was the egg bomb. I didn't really like the beef roll as much because I thought it had a gamey taste, but my friends enjoyed it. Portions were kind of small, but I was really full after lunch, so that was a good thing for me at least. I've been here twice now. The first visit I ordered the The Plant Daddy cocktail, scallion pancakes and the tofu flys head. The second visit, I got the same cocktail and appetizer along with the zhajiangmian. The plant daddy was delicious. It's a fantastic bright citrus flavor cocktail that cuts the dishes nicely. The scallion pancakes are good but definitely lacking a bit on the scallion. If there were more added then it would be delicious. The tofu plant sassy was good. The tofu is cut up into tiny tiny pieces which was a different way than I've seen tofu presented. The zhajiangmian was delicious. It was a lamb dish with fried onion, lemon infused greens and fresh noodles. The dish was delicious and paired well with the cocktail. Both swishes however have a heavy pour of sesame oil added with not enough citrus. With some rice vinegar or additional citrus these dishes would be great. But both dishes were overpowered by the sesame oil. My husband had the chicken sandwich which was very tasty and much larger than I expected. Was excited to try this restaurant as there are not many Taiwanese restaurants in the city, however, I left a bit disappointed. I arrived at around ~9PM with no reservations and was seated within 10 minutes. We ordered o-a jian ($19, oyster pancakes), fly's head ($23), danzi mian ($25) and white rice ($3), and some taiwan beer ($11, 20oz). Total with tip came out to a little over $100 with tip. Portions were also smaller than we had expected. A fair warning, Win Son is a Taiwanese-American restaurant, and you get what you get. Some dishes tasted familiar while others did not at all. O-a jian: Taste more like an egg pancake (dan bing), and had maybe a total of 4 oysters. Only dish I remembered to get a photo of. Fly's Head: Tasted the most familiar, and honestly wasn't bad at all. This comes with rice! Didn't know at the time so I ordered a separate bowl. Danzi Mian: Enjoyed the noodles (nice and Q) but the broth tasted bland. Taiwan Beer: No complaints really but came warm :( Food aside, ambiance and staff were extremely pleasant. Restaurant is dimly lit and plays r&b which I enjoyed! Definitely interested in coming back to try some drinks and the bakery across the street. This place did not disappoint. My only regret was not ordering the chicken and waffles. I didn't order the chicken and waffles because it's white meat. But ended up ordering it to go for my partner. Texture was soggy from sitting in the gravy but that's not their fault (but if you order it to go, make sure the gravy is on the side). I didn't order the o-a Jian because I don't like it but I tried this in Taiwan when I lived there and was told this is THEE most famous Taiwanese street food dish. And I rarely/never see it in the US. so once I saw this on the menu I was like oh this place is for real. Ya know, a lot of places just serve dishes that Americans will like and give it that Panda Express American twist but it was just so nice to see authentic gourmet Taiwanese-American restaurant. read more
