Win Son is one of my ultimate favorite restaurants! I don't like talking about it too much because it's already tooooo popular! I have brought only my good buddies and my sister here. Even during covid times, people were sitting outside claiming tables. This is not a place that you snooze on. Either arrive early, skip the whole rush and do dinner or make a reservation. I was meeting up with two friends this recent brunch hang a couple weeks ago. (Ingrid, fellow Elite Yelper and Alejandra who has returned from her California and Mexico City time during covid) My two lovely friends had never been here. I love it! Alejandra got lost and Ingrid and I got on the list. We killed 30 minutes at the sister bakery kiddie corner from here. Sure we could have gone to another spot but why? Win Son is all about being the best. So why not get the best?! The line was huge and took a while. It was probably a chunk of us from the waiting list but also this bakery is such a fantastic solo brunch spot too, speaking from experience. Then after snagging the coffee and a "Mochi Donut" our table was ready. The trick with Win Son is that it's best to order a variety of plates so everyone can try a little bit of the menu. I adore this menu. I'm pescatarian and I feel like it truly knows how to highlight vegetables and flavors with sauces, herbs and vinegar. It is not reliant on cheese as most other restaurants. There's levels of freshness, earthy and umami. Our Brunch Selections - marinated cucumbers - fried eggplant - black vinegar, labne + spiced cashews - scallion pancake - sweet soy + chili - sesame noodles - black sesame and trumpet purée, oyster mushrooms, snow pea leaves + peanuts - tián miàntuán - fried sweet dough, golden sesame ice cream + sweetened condensed milk Cocktail plant daddy cilantro-mint tequila, matcha, lemon, simple + egg white The cucumbers are fresh and vinegary. The eggplant had this delicious sauce with crunchy cashews. I love all the parts of the tongue being awakened in one dish. Scallion pancake is a classic that does not disappoint. The sesame noodles are always the star. The sauce is ridiculous. You could probably do two orders since it's always a hit. I also always add the egg. Egg makes everything better. Dessert was a gamble but it was good but the ice cream was huge in comparison to the donut. A little less ice cream would have been a little better. We could not finish it with three ladies but others may rise to the challenge. The cocktail to me is always spot on. Love the matcha with that fresh herbs of cilantro and mint and that sourness of lemon and creamy of egg white. A perfect drink. I don't need to spread the word. Win Son, Lose Son. What we appreciated: We were seated relatively quickly on a Thursday evening, the hostess was incredibly nice, and the place was beautiful with the greenery and lively plants. The food: we ordered scallion pancakes and marinated cucumbers, chicken wontons, beef rolls and sesame noodles. The only half decent dish was the scallion pancakes. Everything else looked nice aesthetically but was beyond over salted. You put the food in your mouth and just taste an explosion of salt. Marinated cucumbers - plain and salty. Chicken wontons - drenched in sauce, soggy and salty Beef rolls - soggy and salty. Best part was probably the shaved cucumbers on top Sesame noodles - over sauced and salted. More so disappointed because was looking forward to the oyster mushrooms. Best part was prob crunch from peanuts. Now, I understand that they have a bar and more salt = more people buying drinks. But there has to be middle ground. Disappointing because we were looking forward to this meal based on the reviews the restaurant received. Win Son is a small, modern, Taiwanese fusion restaurant that's been getting a lot of buzz in various food blogs, so my husband and I decided to check it out for dinner with a couple of friends. It was pretty packed for a Sunday night, and they only accept reservations for parties of six or more people, but we were able to get seated immediately as a party of four. We shared the scallion pancakes, oyster omelette, chicken wontons, sesame noodles, and xiajangmyun. The dishes were all very tasty, but I would say the oyster omelette was my favorite. The scallion pancakes were pretty standard, as were the wontons (which could've used more flavor in the filling and perhaps less sauce). The sesame noodles were a great consistency and not too sweet, which I appreciated. I didn't really care for the wavy noodles in the xiajangmyun and the lamb tastes very gamey to me, so I would pass on that if I returned. The service was great from the start, and the ambiance is relaxed and comfortable. The prices are steep for the food that you get, but it's trendy Williamsburg, so if that bothers you, come check out some spots in Queens. :) read more

WOW this restaurant exceeded all my expectations!! I came here with a reservation for a large group of friends, knowing it'd be pretty busy on a Friday night, and it definitely was. The restaurant is dimly lit and a little tight on space, but still gave me elegant and trendy vibes. Their take on Asian dishes was spectacular and everything we tried was soo tasty! I especially loved their eggplant, stuffed scallion pancakes, and zhangjiamian. We did have to order two plates of some just to fill ourselves up since the portion sizes were smaller for their price, but I 100% think it's worth the splurge just to taste their amazing menu. Overall rating: 4.3 I've been back and forth with this rating. It has such high ratings and the food is really good. But I had such a terrible experience going solo, it really rubbed me the wrong way. Let me start with explaining that I've been here twice: 1) solo 3/5 - I had no reso and came the moment it opened. And the bartender is literally right in front of me. - being at an Asian restaurant, I oddly felt like I didn't belong. Isn't that weird? As an Asian, I haven't felt that in awhile. - food was good. Side of rice was def not needed. Somehow thought it would have some garnish. The sloppy bao was very good! - but I wanted to get out of there immediately. I'm not sure if I got judged because I didn't want to drink or maybe it was an off day for them on a Saturday. I just won't ever come back solo. 2) on a date 4.5/5 - I made sure I came back on a date to snag a table. We were lucky with a walk-in on a Tuesday around 7. We had to wait about 30-45 min and just chilled across the street at their bakery. - this experience was different. The host felt warm. - again seated at the bar, the bartender was A LOT nicer than my previous time. She was attentive, but still gave my date & I space. - Food was really good. The big chicken bun literally felt like an Asian McChicken & it was sooo good. I forgot what my date had, but I'm sure if you share a picture they'll know. It was pretty spicy but very good. Win Son offers a varied menu of shareable small and large plates, creative cocktails, and even a great selection of Taiwanese whisky. The interior is cozy yet elegant, perfect for a casual date night. They do not accept reservations, so expect to wait. I came here with a group of 5 on a Wednesday at 8pm. The wait was 45 minutes, which gave us time to snag some pasties from the bakery for later, and a pre-dinner drink at the cute bar next door. Everything was delicious, and reasonably priced. My favorite dish overall was their O-a Jian, a richly savory oyster omelette with a touch of sweetness in the egg that balanced the salty elements. This was a perfect 10/10. The Sesame Noodles and vegetable dishes were well executed, and suitable for vegans. Do not skip dessert. The ice cream stuffed bolo bao, topped with butter fried peanuts, was absolutely decadent. I loved my cocktail as well; a fresh take on an espresso martini with 5 spice vodka, forthave coffee liqueur, and demerara. Service was genuinely friendly and attentive. I had always wanted to try this spot out and by happenstance my wife and I lucked out with a table on a Thursday night. Tip for anyone trying to check out popular places. Go on a Thursday night. We made the trek from Chelsea and 9 stops later off the L we were a 5 minute walk from the restaurant. Their bakery was across the street but having met someone recently connected to the restaurant, we decided to check this spot out first and boy we weren't disappointed. Valentina greeted us at the hostess stand and showed us to our table. The vibe was great. There is something different about a NYC vibe that you get at certain restaurants and this place had it. You can tell and that's the main reason we have no plans of leaving NYC. We had several people watch over our table throughout the night. I started with a cocktail which was the vaquero chino and it was phenomenal. For food, we started off with the marinated cucumbers which was bright and refreshing along with the scallion pancakes. I loved that sweet soy chili sauce and asked for another to use on other dishes. The fly's head was good but wasn't our favorite. Nothing against the dish, it was great but didn't stand out. I would definitely order again. I would have to say my favorite dish of the night (not pictured) was the pea shoots. It had burst of umami and only lasted a minute on the table. We were really excited for this meal but every aspect of the experience left something to be desired. The service was ... we might as well been served by robots. Little to no hospitality. The stinger was the bill being unceremoniously dropped at our area (we sat at the bar) without asking we if we wanted dessert or a final drink. The food was fine, but my expectations were left flat. I came here on lunar new year. They told me I had a two hour wait so I put my name down and walked over to the bakery. It actually turned out to be about a 1 1/2 hour wait but the bakery does have snacks and cocktails so it was time pleasantly spent. They sent me a text message and I walked over and I will seated immediately. They have about 30 tables mostly for 2 to 4 people but they have some larger tables which will seat about 6 to 8 people. They only take reservations for parties six and more so those are the tables reserved for those reservations. They did have a couple of specials for lunar new year which were a bass and a roast duck but by the time I got there they were out of the bass. The wait staff is very quick and they remember your order very well, they recommend that you place your entire order with them as soon as you get there. I will say that the place is really loud and so you'll have to manage your expectations around that. The lamps are interesting they had one disco ball lamp and one lamp made out of recycled plastic bottles. Kind of a clubby scene I guess. Onto the food. We had the cucumber with roe, the o-a Jian (outstanding) the ramen broth (good) and the beef rolls (outstanding) and the nutritious sandwich (fun and creative!) We also tried the plant Daddy cocktail which was really refreshing and very well prepared. They only have one dessert but it was excellent. I loved the cilantro sauce as well as the peanuts in it. They only except reservations for parties with six people or more; I fortunately only had to wait 20 to 30 minutes. -fried eggplant - loved how the eggplant pieces were soft and chewy on the inside but crispy with a nice batter on the outside. Also very much enjoyed the peanuts, cilantro, and yogurt that it came with, but I felt this dish was even better with their homemade chili flakes. -big chicken & waffles - enjoyed the well seasoned and freshly fried Taiwainese chicken as well as the extremely chewy, almost-mochi like sesame waffle! Wish it had a little more syrup but still liked the dish! -sesame noodles - interesting take on your traditional sesame noodles with more flavors including a black sesame puree and smoked oyster mushrooms. A must in Brooklyn. Very popular eatery so reservations ahead of time are necessary. Not sure why but you need at least 6 people in your party to make reservations for time of choice. the food here is great! came here right around 5:45 on the sunday of memorial day weekend, we waited about 15-20 minutes for 2 to be seated which wasn't too bad. we had the lu rou fan and the big chicken bun. the lu rou fan was really delicious, the minced pork was so soft and well seasoned and the pickled vegetables were a perfect accompaniment. the soy eggs were so flavorful and melted in your mouth! the big chicken bun was very good too, with the perfect amount of breading. taste wise it was your standard taiwanese fried chicken (not a bad thing) but the furu mayo added another dimension of flavor. i also really enjoyed dipping this into the chili crisp at the table. had a really great meal here, would come back! read more

I've heard about Win Son many different times through the grapevine so I figured it was about time to try them and they did not disappoint. We ordered for takeout so it obviously wasn't the full experience but the food stood for itself. We ordered the chicken sandwich, the mushroom noodles, and the cucumbers. We had a 30 minute drive home and this chicken sandwich was still incredibly crunchy. It was so insanely good. It had a little sweetness to it and the toppings were insane. The mushroom/sesame noodles were so flavorful and delicious! The marinated cucumbers were absolutely perfect with the noodles and chicken sandwich. They were vinegary and punchy. I loveeeeed them. Only downside is that we had to wait 20 minutes from the expected wait time for pickup but they were busy and the food was worth the wait so it's not really a big deal. read more

I was here at this place with I believe five others back in August last year. They have a strict reservation policy only allowing for larger groups sizes which makes sense as this is a very popular place. The waiter was fine and the food over all was good with some dishes being excellent and others being just alright. They have a very notable drink menu including several cocktails with baijiu. I went with the Kinmen White Lightning which consisted of Kinmen kaoliang 58°, Cocchi americano, Forthave red, and lemon. In other words, it consisted of a strong baiju as well as two different aperitifs and lemon to balance and of course I liked it and I would recommend it heavily for fans of bitter cocktails. Very good stuff. In terms of food, we shared a bunch of dishes and as they came out in rather random order, they will be listed from best to worst. Excellent: Fried Eggplant: Black vinegar, labne + spiced cashews In the sea of all the tasty pork dishes, of all things the best dish was a vegetarian one. It had a wonderful texture and the black vinegar went quite well. I couldn't exactly taste the labne in it but I have no complaints. Lu Rou Fan: Minced heritage pork belly, pickled jie lan + soy egg Very tasty pork with a mix of pickled vegetables and said egg. I wish there was a little bit more of the egg to go with the pork but no complaints otherwise outside of the high price but it is Williamsburg. Good: Sloppy bao: Minced heritage pork, chili + peanuts. This was a nice variation on the usual bao with some good flavor. Similarly good pork to the prior dish. Sesame noodles: Black sesame and trumpet purée, oyster mushrooms, snow pea leaves + peanuts. This dish had some nice umami which is to be expected from the ingredients. There was perhaps a bit too many peanuts but overall it was tasty but very different from any other sesame noodle I've ever had. Alright: Pan-griddled pork buns: Herbs + chili vinaigrette These were perfectly fine but overpriced. Fly's head stir-fried red wattle pork shoulder, garlic chives, yunlin black beans + bird eye chili. This was the only pork dish that we found to be just okay. There wasn't much texture and we found it bland even with the chili and the other ingredients. Not recommended: Guohua Street Salad: Grilled shrimp, smoked tofu, peanuts, golden raisin + mango The shrimp on top didn't really add much to the dish and it didn't really pair well either. The shrimp weren't particularly sweet either and it feels like it just exists for the price point rather than flavor. Overall it was good outside of the street salad with two notably good dishes. I would go back and get a cocktail and one of those two and I would be very happy. I can see why they're crowded even if one or two dishes were a bit subpar for the price point. read more

Great place for some fusion type Taiwanese food but the only downside is the insane wait of the place. Food definitely reminds me of when I'm visiting Taiwan but with all the social media posts, this place can get insanely busy. This was an INSANE brunch. Arrived around 1 on a Saturday and waited in line for ~20 min. Had a fresh pork soup dumpling in line then got inside and ordered three sandwiches and three sweets to try everything. Staff was very helpful. We weren't expecting to get a table so got everything to go (hence the photos) but ended up getting a spot inside and DEVOURED everything. The milk bun sandwich was delicious and perfect if you're vegetarian. Both scallion pancake sandwiches were gooey and delicious - very unique flavors. Absolutely LOVED the mocho donut, which had sweet and salty flavors. Too sweet item. The nian gao was fresh and the berries hit the spot. The twice baked bolo bao was also unique with an almond flavor. Need to go back and try ... the rest of the menu. Also enjoyed the winter melon milk tea as a special refreshing treat! The food was okay and the price is insane. I'm Chinese and I've had a lot Lu Rou Fan growing up as a kid. I did some research, avg cost of Lu Rou Fan in Taiwan is from $0.6 to $3 USD. Here at Win Son it's $31. The dish was good, but not for this price. read more

As a half-Taiwanese vegetarian, I always regret that so many Taiwanese restaurants in the US are almost entirely meat- and seafood-focused. It's true that Taiwan's most famous dishes are rarely vegetarian, but the island has an incredibly rich vegetarian culture, with hundreds of palatial plant-based buffet restaurants. That's all to say that I was very pleased with Win Son's rich vegetarian offerings. Our favorites were the shrimp-free rendition of the Guohua-jie salad (named after a famous food street in Tainan), the vegetarian flys head, especially with a healthy healing of chili oil, and most of all the super-crispy fried eggplant paired somewhat unusually with labne. But everything we ordered was very good, even the ice cream sandwich with cilantro. And no Taiwanese meal would be complete without a glass of that famous, ever-present mediocre Taiwan beer. read more

Came on a Tuesday night. The place was pretty empty when I arrived there around 7:45PM, but the hostess said the wait was an hour and 5 minutes! I was shocked since we only had a party of 3 and there were plenty of open tables. We put our names down, walked out annoyed, and they updated the wait time to 40 minutes. My boyfriend then directly asked the hostess why the wait was so long and she shared it was because they didn't have enough waitstaff. After 25 minutes of enjoying drinks at Win Son Bakery (highly recommend) we were seated. The food was mediocre. Solid 7 out of 10 dishes. The chicken sandwich upset my stomach and it was too filling to finish. I enjoyed nibbling on my boyfriend's sesame noodles, though. I left disappointed. read more
