It's a really nice steakhouse. Not too stuffy or overly classy, but at the same time clean and modern. It's definitely where well-paid techies of the area come to congregate when feeling primal.
Interestingly, we didn't even notice until after sitting a while at the bar that there's actually a live DJ!--I love how they were playing dance music, but somehow it remained subtle and upscale...
And about sitting at the bar--we came early on a Fri night, but it was already a 2hr wait without reservations! So, don't expect to sit at a table unless you made prior arrangements.
And the food...
1. Pimm's Royal $12 "pimm's no. 1, ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice, strawberries, cucumber, prosecco": I thought the flavor was quite interesting. Almost savory. Tastes almost like a salad meets lemonade, but in a good way........ well, I guess that don't make sense huh? 7.5/10
2. 2017 Comartin R Bar R Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains, Chardonnay $10: Very classic Chardonnay. Dry, buttery. 6/10
3. Meaty Cheesey Rolls $12 "braised short rib, provolone, grilled onions and bell peppers, horseradish thyme aioli": Absolutely totally not what I was thinking. There's this Italian food truck that I always get cheese rolls at, which were basically bread balls drowned in oil and topped with an inch of melted cheese. So, I totally thought this was that... and look, I'm Chinese--no self-respecting Chinese orders egg rolls at a Caucasian restaurant, right!? Anyway... that's basically what this was, but thank God it did not taste Asian whatsoever. Yes, it looks like some, and is wrapped and fried the same way, but these pretty much are straight BBQ sandwiches fried. Not bad. 7/10
4. Ginger Ponzu Bone-In Ribeye $44 "our 18oz certified angus beef bone-in ribeye, topped with a ginger ponzu demi glace, shitake mushrooms, crispy onion strings and toasted sesame seeds"..... NOW we're talking. So, this here's a steakhouse, so their steak better be GREAT. And, well... it wasn't bad. Kinda weird actually. But hey, they called it ginger ponzu so I guess expecting a traditional steak would be silly. That said, it still wasn't anything like I expected (seems to be the theme of the night)--for one, I can't taste any of that ginger or ponzu. But secondly, there's a mountain of onion rings on top--maybe a bit too much cause it kinda covers up the steak. And then I'd have to say, as usually I asked for medium-rare, but I think they slightly overcooked it to maybe medium or medium-well. But still, they must have used high quality beef because it was still tender and juicy. Anyway, it was a good effort, and I'm happy they tried. 7/10
5. Grilled Kurobuta Bone-In Pork Chop $26 "beautifully grilled chop topped with apricot chutney, accompanied by crispy brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes, balsamic drizzle finish":...
...EVER SINGLE RESTAURANT where we order pork chop, I ALWAYS tell the waiter to please not overcook the pork and make it dry. EVERY SINGLE TIME. If they allow it, I ask for medium, leaning towards medium-rare. This was no exception... Most restaurants still screw this up. It's like asking for a medium burger--even those that ask will just ignore you and make it well done...
......and yes, you guess it, cooked WELL DONE here, despite all that. Damn shame cause man everything else on the plate was so amazing! The apricot preserve was so dense and intense with amazing texture and flavor. All ruined by that dry-as-f pork chop. Come on. 3/10
6. Tri-Cauliflower $9 "roasted, tarragon vinaigrette": WOW! I guarantee you've never had cauliflower like this before!... well, okay, maybe you have ha ha, but I haven't. That intense anise star flavor (like licorice) strangely really works! It's almost like Chinese fusion as it has all the familiar flavors, but without being obvious. 9/10
7. 2016 Seghesio, Sonoma, Zinfandel $12: Almost like a Cabernet, being so spicy and bold. Also taste currants coming through at the end. 8/10
8. Key Lime Tartlet $9 "lime custard, lime zested whipped cream, graham cracker crust, candied lime zest, honey, powdered sugar": Like everything else so far, again, totally not what I was expecting. In this case, I was expecting a pie but got a cake instead. I can't remember much else though except that it wasn't great, sorry.
So, I think if you work around here, or live in the area, it's a good place to come once in a while. I wouldn't drive from out of town just to eat here though.
