I still stand by my earlier review of another Urban Plates location. The quality isn't quite what it was five years ago. But this San Jose spot won me over. We bought the annual pass, which takes 20% off everything, and ordered the Moroccan braised chicken with mashed potatoes, the sea bass, and the banana cream pie. All of it was top notch. The fish is excellent, and that pie is SUBLIME. Even with the pass, it's a great deal, especially when everything in San Jose is so expensive. The food is healthier and not greasy. We're they bigger before? Yes, but that's everywhere. My only gripe: it saved my credit card automatically. For an annual pass, I don't get why they need to keep it on file, and it wore me out a bit. The ambiance is nice sitting outside on Santana Row but I didn't think the food was that good. The chimichurri steak was kind of small and left me hungry afterwards. The parm truffle fries were just ok. The Mac & cheese was kind of watery. I would only eat here for the location probably a waste to get it doordashed. It has a more modern, contemporary feel that emphasizes customization choices and friendly customer service. You walk in and order at the counter, where there's a clearly displayed menu with all the choices above the register area. The prices are pretty typical, but they do have chef specials that are discounted and rotate. The day we went, it was the roasted chicken that was the chef special, so we tried that. They make a point of bringing the food to you, which is nice, and they make sure you have everything you need. The food was well prepared and tasty - it felt like effort was taken to make it delicious home-cooked feeing type of meal. The Brussel sprouts were very good, as was the chicken. Portion sizes were fine, though not what I'd call generous. The garlic bread was a little lacking - just not really toasted enough, and perhaps as a healthier restaurant, they didn't butter and salt it up too much, which is fine. Had the Moroccan Chicken and Salmon. Moroccan chicken came with basmati rice and toast. The sauce had cumin flavor, like peppery cilantro mix. The salmon was good and well seasoned. Not fishy at all. A lot of the bites I had were filled with massive salt crystal chunks. But the real meal and dish killer was the brussels sprouts. First off, it looked nothing like the pictures on the website. He specifically said if he sees his name, Erik, mentioned in a good review, he will bring me a cookie. What?? He was not our server. In fact, I have not interacted with him ever before. Had a grilled steak salad delivered for lunch. In the picture of the salad on the DoorDash menu, the steak looks nicely cooked medium rare. When I received my salad, most of the pieces were well-done with a few medium. It was disappointing. There is an option to select well-done when ordering, but I didn't select it. The salad itself was pretty unexciting, too, with just mixed greens and coconut roasted cashews. That was partly my fault because I had them hold the mango salsa and jicama. I added red onions and avocado from my own kitchen and that helped liven it up. I also discovered if I dipped the steak in the salad dressing it tasted better. The salad dressing was honey Dijon, but it tasted more like thousand island. That's okay, I like thousand island. The best part of the salad was the coconut roasted cashews. Wow, they were delicious. There was no line, however, the two workers at the front just ignored us while they were busy working behind the counter. We waited for about 10 mins before someone acknowledged us and asked if we were ready to order. Not good customer service to begin with. We ordered the Grilled Chicken plate (with chimichurrii sauce) and the Roasted Barramundi Seabass plate. The grilled chicken is moist and the chimichurri sauce is very good. For the harrisa lime cauliflower, it's a bit too salty and too much lime. The roasted brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze is pretty good. My friend said the roasted barramundi seabass is good but the rainbow carrots and golden beets side dish is greasy. It's pretty pricey for the portion size. For adding a side of protein to a salad (that doesn't come with any protein) such as grilled chicken, it's another $10 that is expensive. The cashier named Vonya didn't have good customer service. I was ordering and after naming one entree, she cut me off to ask my partner what his order was and immediately told us the total of the order. My daughters chose this place after visiting the other restaurants nearby and peeping menus. This one appealed to them so we went inside. We waited in line to order and then took our number to find a booth to sit at. Service was quick and our food arrived shortly after. The salad was so good with a mixture golden and red beets. Came to pick up our pre-ordered Turkey Family Meal yesterday. We got it once the year before from a different location and liked it a lot. While I enjoyed cooking for my family last Thanksgiving, I missed how much more relaxed it was when someone else did the cooking and I could spend more time with my family doing other things. We had ordered Thanksgiving meals from a number of other places over the years, but they would all require re-heating. It's a no-brainer to order from Urban Plates again this year as their meal was hot and ready to eat and it would be just for 3 adults. Price of the family meal had only increased slightly compared to 2 years ago (about $118 after surcharge and tax). I placed a separate order for two slices of pie to be picked up at the same time, too. Street parking was easy a little before 6:30pm. There was no line for pickup and the food (one big bag for the family meal, and one small bag for the pie slices) were already on a table near the back inside the restaurant. The bags were clearly marked with my name. The food smelled really good in the car, and was still warm when we got home. The turkey breast was moist, the Brussel sprouts were really tasty, and not bitter at all. The mashed potato was not bad. The bread and the stuffing were a little brand, though. Adding gravy to them did help, fortunately. We had enough leftover for another person as the meal was supposed to serve 4. We warmed up the apple pie slice, and shared it with ice cream. A perfect sweet ending to our meal. We're too full to even try the pumpkin pie slice, and had to save it for another day. The gentleman behind the counter kindly welcomed me and explained how the ordering works. I decided on the seared wild ahi tuna. It came with my choice of two sides. I chose the hummus and pita chips and a side salad. I also ordered an iced tea. I was given a number to place at my table so that they can deliver my food to me. I chose a comfy booth inside. They do have outdoor seating, but the sun was hitting that area pretty hard, so I chose to sit inside. They have an area for self serve drinks and silverware. I filled up my iced tea and got my utensils and waited for my food. My food came out fast. The young man who brought my food was very kind and attentive. He also got me a to go cup to fill up when I left, which I thought was so nice. They have the best customer service. My food was excellent. 4.5 rounded to 5 For a casual place located on Santana Row, Urban Plates actually exceeded my expectations, which were influenced by my previous experiences of Santana Row. You can order at the front counter near the entrance or use the QR code on the table (or the website) to do so. I chose to order from the table since I was waiting for the rest of the party. The website is straightforward and easy to use, and note there is a subscription available for frequent diners to purchase that enables them to order menu items with a noticeable discount. We tried the grassfed steak (with fries and caesar salad (extra $1 for that option) and the pork ribs (half rack). The steak was ok but I felt it needed some additional seasoning (chimichurri is $1 extra, and can be ordered either as an add-on or through the separate menu option of chimichurri grassfed steak). Keep in mind that grassfed beef will usually taste different from beef raised or finished on grains. I don't think I would order the steak again. The pork ribs though earned a high rating for the restaurant. Note that this is listed as a seasonal item but I hope they make it a permanent part of the menu, as I would return for it. The meat is very tender, you can say it falls off the bone. The sauce is all right and rather sweet; I actually think the ribs didn't need as much sauce on them, and the sauce on the side was more than enough. The two sides a friend ordered for his pork ribs plate were brussel sprouts w/balsamic dressing and carrots and beets, and he liked both. The pork ribs can be ordered by themselves as a protein side; if you order the pork ribs plate with an extra side of ribs, that's about a full rack and comparable to a full rack plate that you would get at the bbq places around here, and the ribs at Urban Plates are comparable in taste, if not better. A friend's ice tea order was a bit late but eventually brought to the table, but only after we had already asked the young lady who brought our food the table about it and she had brought one to the table for us. Great customer service and attentiveness from her. (The staff taking orders at the front counter take care of drink orders.) There are three bathrooms; the one I used was ok though the toilet could have been cleaned. I don't know how often the bathrooms are serviced. The faucet can be tricky as the sensor is located on the wall and you may need to wave your hand in front of it at a closer distance than you would think necessary. This is a good, (more) economical dining option at Santana Row. (Though fountain beverages will be at Santana Row prices.) It is a nice casual place for eating and hanging out with friends if it's not too busy, but keep in mind that parking at Santana Row is free for only the first two hours. read more

I came a bit early just to wait and there were already a couple people that were waiting for their orders. We all stood around and there only seemed to be 1 person manning the register to take orders and apparently bag to go orders as well. There just seemed to be a lot of dysfunction of not knowing what to do. There were times where they would check on orders but then leave the register empty so customers coming in just stood there until they came back. I got a text that my order was getting bagged but it just never came out and no one was there to check. Everyone was just in the back bagging up orders and seemed like patrons dining in were a bit ignored as well as I saw multiple people have to go back and ask for their food or other items. I finally got my order along with about 4/5 other people at the same time not knowing when they actually placed their order. This was about 4:50 before I got my food. My feedback is to have a better system for this as I had my wife and child waiting and this isn't what I would expect from an online ordering system with an ETA on when to get my food. read more

When getting our sodas ice was empty we had to wait 10 minutes for someone to refill it. When food was being prepared we noticed a horrible fishy smell and when plates came out what we had been smelling was the shrimp on the steak and shrimp plate. The fish smell was so strong and foul the steak was cold and as if boiled. The Brussel sprouts were cold and soggy tasting like old fart. We had burgers as well they came out completely cold and were disgusting. We also ordered the grilled chicken Cobb salad and the chicken looked and tasted like rubber it also looked boiled. They are located in Santana Row near Maggiano's and Palmetto. They have a wide variety of menu options, but we got the braised beef and mushrooms and the chimichurri grilled steak. I pay, we take out number and drinks and we go to find a table. We came at a busy time and only a couple tables in not-so-optimal spots were available. We spot a table that is more comfortable for us, but it hasn't been bussed yet. A gentleman comes up behind us, and says, "I can clear this for you." He stops what he's doing, takes the dishes and as we go to set our stuff down, he goes even further and says, "let me wipe that table for you." All I can say to this is, THANK YOU ERIK. After witnessing that start contrast between service, we enjoy our food. Close to the end of our meal, my S/O sings praises about the corn. I ask her if she would like me to order more corn for us to take to-go. She could not resist. I go up to the counter to order, and am met by Vonya. She says, "Hello, are you ordering for here or to-go?" I tell her "to-go. I just want to order two orders of the corn on the cob please." I am then met by the driest sigh she could have ever let out in front of me. "Your total will be _____." I pay, take the receipt, and she says TO MY FACE, "we will call your name when it's ready." I go sit down and wait for the corn while we finish up our meal. Our table is right next to the front counter. We can see the side where the to-go orders are placed for pick-up. 20 minutes goes by, and I see Vonya place a bag down on the counter. WE MAKE DIRECT EYE CONTACT, as she physically TURNS HER HEAD TO LOOK AT ME, and says nothing. I remember what she said to me. They will call my name. I sit for about 5 more minutes. 25 minutes for some corn is ridiculous, right? Has to be. I go up to the counter, speak to a different gentleman, and ask for a follow up on my corn. Vonya steps in behind him and says "oh it's over there on the counter." It was the bag I watched her place down. I think at this point, when I come back, if I'm greeted by Vonya again, I might just leave and try again later. Or just ask for someone else. read more

Urban Plates is a solid spot if you're looking for something that feels a little upscale without the big price tag. You order at the counter, choose your protein, sauce and sides, pay, then grab a seat and they bring the food out to you. Super easy. I went with the grass-fed steak plate, which comes with two sides and a piece of bread. The steak was actually more tender than I expected, which was a nice surprise. The chimichurri sauce had good flavor but was a little on the oily side. The bread tasted a bit burnt--not terrible, just kind of took away from the rest of the plate. For sides, I got the Caesar salad and broccolini. Both were really good--the salad was fresh and the broccolini was cooked perfectly. I also like that they offer sauces like California Pepper Plant, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. Nice little touches like that go a long way.
