This place is awesome!! I went there around a month ago with my family while after visiting Zion national park. After a full day of hiking, we were very hungry, and this place did not disappoint!! They have vegan options that don't taste like cardboard (I got the stuffed avocado salad with tofu and their house dressing and it was the best thing I've ever had :) they also have many other Mexican entrees like tacos and enchiladas that my family enjoyed as well. Overall, Whiptail Grill has wonderful service, cool atmosphere, and amazing food! At first appearance you might think this retired gas station is just faking it as a restaurant. Well they are a legit restaurant that serves up big flavors from a diverse yet simple menu. The servers are honest and down to Earth. They make sure you know what the menu items are like, and provide solid insight into their favorites. The chicken is good in sandwiches, enchiladas. and tacos. The side salads were great with avocado dressing. The seasoned fries were spot on. Drinks are fairly priced, and the beer is local to Utah. Why not a five star? Downsides were the smaller sized plate of nachos we had as a starter. Another layer would have better served the $12.99 price tag. We had the asada tacos, Mahi Mahi tacos, and the Anaheim green chili burger. Be ready for very generous servings and very tasty, tender, fresh food! Our service was quick and friendly. Wow, what a great way to end a full day in Zion! The food was superb! We all loved our orders from the whiptail nachos with beef tenderloin, to the chicken enchilada, and the tacos (carne asada, fish). Best mexican food I've tried. The creme brûlée did not look appetizing but it was interesting and good as well. The place was tiny I was thankful they were able to seat our party of 5 together. It rained at that time so we couldn't sit outdoors. If I ever find myself in Zion again, I will return to the Whiptail Grill in a heartbeat. read more

We came here to grab a quick bite to eat while visiting Zion. We waited a few minutes outside since they were busy - they had heaters which was really nice. I was thrown off my their pricing because vegetarian enchiladas were $18!!! So we ordered a quesadilla to share and some drinks. They had reasonable pricing on drinks, though one we ordered from the 'on tap' menu came in a can.... The worst part was when the quesadilla came, it was open faced - which can at best be described as a pizza with a tortilla for crust. It's surreal sitting outside this place with Zion mountain ranges in the background looking like a green screen (grew up with too much Hollywood influence, what can I say??). Regardless, it's a beautiful view and the location can't be beat just outside the entrance to Zion National park. Food overall was deelish. As other reviewers pointed out, it was a bit odd/atypical to be at a Mexican restaurant where you had to pay extra for chips and salsa, but that is not a deal breaker for me necessarily. I was looking forward to the oft mentioned (in reviews) goat cheese chili relleno, but was slightly disappointed that it seemed to be deep-fried twice, maybe three times over?? The batter was hard and a little overkill. But everything was tasty and our service (I wish i would've gotten her name) was excellent--a shorter, older hispanic lady (I'm not dissing short or old people...I'm only 5'2" myself and closing in on 50, LOL!!); but I wanted to call her out because she was SO friendly and accommodating after sort of being ignored by the other younger gals coming and going when we first rolled in. Talk about surprises! This cafe, just outside Zion Park South Entrance, used to be a gas station in the 1960's (cool pictures on the wall to confirm). The vibe is laid back for the customer, but the energy in the kitchen will knock your socks off! Food quality and preparation of everything is top-notch. As good as any top-scale bistro in LA or Manhattan! 50/50 pork/beef hamburger, dressed, is a surprising pleasure. But the chef's true experiments is what brings back the guests. Goat and Jack-cheese filled Anaheim pepper, lightly breaded and fried, with cucumber salad, pico de gallo and tomatillo sauce. OMG- this dish is a culinary delight. Don't miss this dish and this cafe if you're in this part of Southern Utah. Worth a speci drive from St. George or Cedar City. Yum! read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years for their famous goat cheese chile relleno. The food has always been excellent and the waiter Freddy has always been slow but never openly rude. This time, we had a gift certificate to use. After we requested the check we showed Freddy the gift certificate and gave him our credit card. In a very loud voice he publicly schooled us for not giving him advance warning of the gift certificate and he said it was too late for him to call to verify it. We apologized, not knowing that phone verification was necessary or that we needed to notify him of having a gift certificate before we had even received the check. We did let him know that we had called only 10 minutes before we came for dinner to confirm that they would take gift certificates and they had said yes. However Freddy continued to berate us loudly in front of other customers, which was demeaning and embarrassing. He asked us to come back the next day to speak with the manager to get reimbursed for a gift certificate after paying the full amount now. When we explained that we could not come back the next day, Freddy expressed his frustration loudly again and said he would need to speak with the manager. When Freddy returned he said that they would "take the hit" now and give us the discount then call to verify the gift certificate in the morning. I thanked him very much, said we were very appreciative, and pulled up the gift certificate on my phone to show it to him. Freddy said he needed to take the phone back with him into the indoor area of the restaurant to take down the info. Needless to say I was not very comfortable with giving him my unlocked phone at this point, so I suggested writing it down. When this suggestion upset him, I offered to go in with him and bring my phone so he could write it down in the restaurant. He told me he could not let me in the restaurant. At this point Freddy said he would have to get his manager, who turned out to be the extremely reasonable and polite head chef, Brandon. We were impressed with the way Brandon handled the situation very professionally. He had no problem writing down the confirmation code off the phone at the table and honoring the gift certificate. We reiterated to Brandon that we have been to Whiptail several times and always come back for his excellent food. We had never been treated so poorly by a waiter at Whiptail in the past or, frankly, at any other restaurant. We thanked Brandon for helping us come to a resolution, told him we loved his food so much we even ordered a second round to take with us. We left a full tip specifically for Brandon's wonderful food and the mature way in which he handled this situation. I hate to write any kind of negative review about this restaurant that I have visited so many times. This is a wonderful restaurant and I hope this feedback will only help ensure no one else has the experience we did this time. We have always had fond memories of this place. read more

This place was literally one of the only restaurants open between lunch and dinner! After a day of hiking in the rain in Zion (Angel's landing, come on somebody) I was ready to EAT even if it wasn't a traditional meal time. I was really surprised more restaurants in the area weren't open because of people like me! Whiptail is right off a trolley line, so convenience is key here. This place is like Mexican fusion with Americana, so my boyfriend got the steak tacos extra spicy. I got a chicken sandwich with fries. My boyfriend really liked his tacos, but my sandwich wasn't really much to remember. The service was also kind of slow considering this place maybe had 10 tables. An unseasonably cold Zion in May might have contributed to this place being busier than expected mid-day. read more

I'm sorry to do this but they toasted my husband's burrito and ... who toasts a burrito?!? We were so confused. My spaghetti squash enchiladas were okay -- way too much goat cheese. That being said, everything near Zion is expensive, so just double check that you got what you paid for, and I'd say this is a place worth visiting. There were people sitting down to eat, but given COVID, my husband and I ordered to-go, which was fast and wasy. We got the fresh chips w/salsa & guac - the chips were not fresh or warm, but the salsa & guac were tasty. I had the stuffed avocado salad w/tofu which was good but not great. The tofu was deeply fried and oily, and they forgot to give me dressing so the whole thing was dry. Honestly I was just happy to have a lot of greens after eating out every day while on vacation. My husband got the fire pollo tacos. He loved the flavor, but they also forgot to give him dressing for his side salad, so he had the same sad dry salad experience as me. read more

I had the excellent avocado salad. Veggies were crisp and fresh. There was romaine, bell peppers, corn and half an avocado. Salad was topped with tortilla strips, grilled prawns and steak. First time in utah and this is the first returant I picked. So glad I picked it! They had outdoor and indoor seating available and I had to sit outdoor to see the amazing view of the mountains. DISGUSTING! Food was tasteless and cold, I called twice to confirm that I was receiving a side of beans and rice and the lady said "yes, it comes with it." I drove across the street to La Quinta and no rice and beans and the food is cold, not even warm, it's literally across the street. The shrimp had a rubbery feel and taste to it like when it's over cooked, the enchiladas are a joke, no taste to them. Save your money and time. After a long hike, and at the price we paid for this, ridiculous for the service and food. Step your game up and quit cutting corners. $40 for 2 plates. Excellent Mexican restaurant! Chips and salsa aren't free, but fine! My husband and I split the nacho plate and added tenderloin. They were huge and plenty for both of us.
