This is a very sweet looking place. We stopped in after a long day of hiking. Immediately the server was pretty unaccommodating. If we hadn't been so hungry, we wouldn't have stayed. The space looks very relaxing and chill but the rude service just ruined that vibe for us. We did get a compliment on our phone case as she brought the check. Too little, too late - I wish she had cared to spread that joyful attitude during our service. The food is fine, nothing too special. We enjoyed our meal. We asked if we could leave our car parked while we wondered - they told us NO! Had the town been busy, perhaps I would have understood but there was very little activity in the restaurant and in the town itself. My advice, explore some of the other cute restaurants here, perhaps one that appreciates the business. read more

I think this was my favorite meal in Springdale. We came around 3pm hoping to beat the dinner rush and there was only a few other people dining at the time. The main reason for coming was the goat cheese chile relleno. It was so good. The way it's fried without being heavy works perfect with the goat cheese and sauce. It was pretty filling but I can understand why it's on the starters menu. We also had the shrimp tacos. They were huge and delicious. The rice and beans were a bit bland. But for $1, it was worth adding guacamole. This is the one place I know I want to come back to if I make it to Zion again. read more

I was really excited to come to Whiptail. My friend recommended this place and she said it looks like a run down divey Mexican joint but I wouldn't be upset with the tacos...or anything. This is s little hole in the wall place in a converted gas station. There were two of us that arrived in the mid afternoon. They wanted to seat us in the very back at a table for two, but we asked to be seated in one of the more front areas which happened to have bigger tables. The host seemed a little annoyed by this, but did move us. It's not like it was a main dining time when they were likely to get a big rush on tables. After that, the service was good and we really enjoyed the food. They primarily serve Mexican food. The restroom is outside and you need a key...just like a gas station. read more

Parking was tough and had to circle around a few times to find a spot...The place was packed on a Friday night and we waited about 20 minutes for a table to open. Noticed the menu in front and smiled, I always prefer restaurants with smaller menus, because it usually means everything is fresh and the kitchen isnt overwhelmed. We both weren't starving so we ordered the Green Chile Cheeseburger, which comes with grass fed beef, Jack cheese, anaheim chiles and guacamole. Burger was big enough for my Wife and I to share, we just cut it in half. Flavor was delicious and perfectly cooked, fries were fresh cut and tasty. I want to try the bbq gouda burger next time. The waiter rattled off some specials that sounded good like ribs and some special enchiladas... But, ya know. Oh yeah, the Ranch is delicious! I could drink that stuff! Made in house for sure. Went to lunch here after a hike through Zion.. the service was really good and the food was even better than we expected with delicious taste. We ordered for a group of 7 and the total was $150.. we didn't mind the price for just sandwiches because the flavor was worth and it was a touristy area. The only down side was for one of the meals (a wrap) they forgot to take the plastic wrapper off the cheese and we didn't notice until he bit it. Saturday evening: a few tables inside and lots of seating outside with heaters for warmth (opted to stay inside). Menu shows some pricey-options for Mexican food, albeit with the portions being large. Settled on the Whiptail Burrito ($17) and a brew ($6). All the beer is in tallboy cans - providing enough time for the meal to arrive. As mentioned, the burrito is gigantic - a heaping pile of wrapped meat/veggies/cheese covered in a thick cheesy gravy. Couldn't taste the tomatillo too much, yet the entire meal is filling (salad and beans are an afterthought). Service is friendly despite being towards the end of the day and still crowded. 3.5 star spot rounded up because of location/service. read more

First red flag - chips and salsa (chips were great) but the salsa seemed like it was out of a can. (Chunks of tomatoes with some corn). Definitely not a homemade tomato/Chile salsa. Ordered our main dish with "carne asada" All seemed great by presentation but once we started eating, we QUICKLY realized that the "Carna Asada" was in fact beef chuck roast. (Carne asada doesn't fall apart into carnitas style) Gave the whole meal a completely different taste. Did we finish it? No. Did we eat most of it? Yes (we were starving and paid a decent amount to not try to finish it) Will we come back? No. Why 3 stars you may ask? The service was amazing and everyone was very very nice. read more

Apparently this is one of the "lively" places during peak season. Week of thanksgiving we were the only people in the place. I had the chicken enchiladas. Not bad. Chicken itself was kinda bland but the green sauce was flavorful and had a little spice to it. Husband had the specialty goat cheese stuffed chili relleno, added carne asada. Definitely better. Bigger than expected, great crunchy coating; they used bread crumbs not a batter like most rellenos, more like a jalapeño popper. Go for the chili relleno! Walking back to our room from the park during lunch and looking for something to eat to satisfy that craving. After walking by several places that didn't seem to grab our attention we came upon a repurposed gas station turned restaurant named Whiptail Cafe. After a once over on the menu we took the plunge. We were seated in the shade on the "patio" where cars used to pull up for fuel. It had a cool vibe and played great music and you simply cannot beat the view. Nothing really remarkable or redeeming about this place. The food was very bland and had almost no flavor. We had to put Cholula on everything. The chips were cold and store bought, the salsa was basically bruschetta with corn in it, and everything else can very loosely be considered Tex-Mex. I had the chicken tacos and the roasted peppers and toppings on the chicken was very tasty. Portions are large and the service was the best in all of Springdale. Highly recommend this business. It started to downpour and their staff took care of us outside eaters. They even went the extra mile to walk us under an umbrella to the bus stop. One server Sami, even offered to drive us to our hotel if the Springdale shuttle did not show up! What a terrific experience. I'm telling everyone about this great business! Tired from hikes and stuck in a touristy town where prices are high but taste not so much so, we were lucky enough to find this spot open over the holidays and had our first fulfilling meal in days. Stopped in here on an October Wed at 6:30 pm and got the last outdoor table. Guests continued to arrive the whole time we were there and all tables were reseated. Point being, not really in season, but still a lively business on a weeknight, they were running a wait when we left. After the sun went down, heaters were turned on which made it very comfortable. If you're an out of towner, even if it's warm while the sun is up you need to bring a jacket for after it goes down. Service was attentive and friendly. We were invited to place food and drink orders promptly and when we said we hadn't looked at the menu yet there was no pressure at all. Our table ordered the Southwest Taco Salad $12.99 (Served in a grilled soft flour tortilla with mixed baby greens, black beans, and rice. Topped with house made vinaigrette, salsa fresca and tortilla strips). The grilled soft flour tortilla was enormous and freshly well grilled. Such a nice change from fried tortilla bowls for taco salad!! Whiptail Pineapple Porker $13.99 (Loaded with delicious sweet pulled pork, stewed in our pineapple bbq sauce, finished with chipotle cabbage slaw and onion straws. Served on our gourmet brioche bun). Stuffed Avocado Salad $12.99 (Choice select avocado stuffed with marinated corn, onion, cucumber, peppers and cilantro. Served atop baby mixed greens with crispy tortilla strips and house dressing. Add your Choice of Asada Style Tenderloin, Fire Braised Chicken, Sweet Pork, Shrimp or Tofu for $5.00) so $17.99 because I added chicken. We split this because we'd had a late lunch and the kitchen thoughtfully sent it out in two portions. Very much appreciated. The chicken was moist and was tasty and the homemade tortilla strips are delish. House dressing was excellent, I was a fan. I'd love to come back here on a night I was hungrier and try more items, I suspect they do many things well. My only gripe is that if you're here with another couple and split the check they pre-add the gratuity to each bill. I've never come across this before and don't see a reason for it. If you're chatting with your friends and don't pay attention you may end up double-tipping and that's not going to make for repeat customers. As an out of towner that won't affect me but as one who's never stiffed a server in my life, it doesn't present well. read more

My husband and I walked here from the other end of town a few nights ago. We were told it would be an hour wait, and it was a bit over an hour. There were many families waiting, and all seemed to be frustrated with the wait. However, we noticed several open tables. The hostess explained that they have a small kitchen and therefore cannot seat all of their tables at once (to which I wonder, so why are there so many tables?). No drinks were offered during our wait. We finally were seated on the outdoor patio, which did have a cute, laid back, and festive atmosphere. Our server was efficient. Food- eh. The Chile relleno appetizer was indeed delicious, but my chicken burrito was nothing special. My husband liked his carne asada tacos.
