The interior was spacious, and I love all the plants inside the restaurant. Though we were seated ridiculously close to the table next to us for some reason, so it was sometimes hard to hear my friend sitting across from me. The staff is nice and frequently checked in on us. The pork jowl is Hakka style and very salty, but very tender and soft. The beef noodle soup tasted fantastic, so flavorful, and beef just melts in your mouth. But the only thing I thought was a must-get is actually the fried tangyuan with ice cream. The chewy mochi with the sweet black sesame filling paired deliciously with the cold ice cream. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back!
sad that we didn't make it in time for their famous chicken but got to try the spicy beef fat noodles, pea shoots, and pork rice. the pork rice was probs my favorite, noodles and veg were good too and overall solid portion sizes! a fun taiwanese fusion spot overall.
Drinks were excellent! They seated us at the bar first because we were super early and the popcorn chicken app was very well fried with some yummy glaze. Faves at our dinner table were the cold sesame noodles, wontons, and pork jowl. IMO you don't need the fried rice so just get the jowl as an app, not a protein add-on. I wished the BDSM chicken had more dark meat, but it was also really well fried and flavored. My husband and I also both wished the fried tofu app fully went stinky tofu, but I get why that's not on the menu here. Pork hock croquette was just ok and the huadiao egg tofu could've been better served over rice vs with wonton chips. Pea shoots were solid but it's hard to mess that up. Husband wished the wontons were in more of a chili oil than the sesame sauce but the wontons themselves were really delicious. Want to try 886 next time!
Idk why I haven't been here before?? It was absolutely delicious!! Bf said they might have the best pork jowls in the city! Big words!! The beef oil noodles gave big chicken plate vibes (iykyk) but with beef Mushroom salad was a little different than the regular woodear salad - delish!! The main star of the show imo was the fried tangyuan - delicious creamy ice cream with a crispy mochi-y sesame ball of goodness!! Cant wait to come back and try their other items! Great cocktail list, great service, great vibes, smaller spot but has one bigger table to accommodate a bigger party! Also, didn't know but it's by the same team behind 888 in st marks!
Wenwen is a Taiwanese fusion place known for their BDSM chicken, where they only serve a very limited amounts of the dish each day. They open at 5 pm for dinner and I came to wait at 4:50 pm. I was able to walk-in right away and get seated. SM in the chicken dish stands for soy milk and it was definitely something I was able to taste. The portion size was pretty decent but I did had two issues with the dish. The dish was more of a Sichuan/Mala type of seasoning rather than something you expect to see from Taiwanese fried chicken. I did wish they use that kind of seasoning instead. With such a big portion of chicken, I also wish they had more of a variety of dark and white meat, as I had mostly white. I also ordered their minced pork over rice and their beef noodle soups - two classic Taiwanese dishes. I actually ended up enjoying Wenwen's take on the two dishes more than the chicken! They were also known for their fried Tangyuan desserts and that was something I enjoyed as well!
Sister restaurant to the lively 886 in Saint Marks, Wenwen in Greenpoint offers up comfort Taiwanese food with a variety of small bites, rice and noodle dishes, and specialty dishes. Service was good, and pretty quick. One of their specialty dishes that I've heard so much about is their BDSM chicken: their Brinded, De-boned, and Soy-Milk battered yellow fat chicken. As they only have limited quantity each day, I was surprised that they had it when I came in at 6:30p on a Monday. I paired it with their cucumber salad and some rice,and it was great! The chicken was crispy yet still juicy and the seasoning was delicious. Loved the sauteed greens and beansprouts that they added to the dish, and I thought that it was very well-rounded. Would love to come back to try some of their other popular dishes, such as their popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup, or tangyuan.
Beef noodle soup is delicious! I was surprised that it was brought out very quickly after I ordered. The broth is hot and flavorful, and after devouring the beef and noodles, I drank it all up! The beef was very tender and fell apart. The noodles were delicious and made me think of ramen. I sat at the bar, and the gal who was bartending was also my waitress, and she took my order and was awesome! Not the best beef noodle soup I've ever had (I'm Taiwanese, my standards are high), but it hit the spot on a cold drizzly December night.
Walked on a Wednesday night at 8pm and was seated about 10 mins later. Service was good and the ambience was nice. The bathroom had a disco ball and some very hip Asian music. The food: Sacha Hot Honey Popcorn chicken - great appetizer and was fried well and very juicy chicken. Beef noodle soup - the beef was super tender and delicious and the noodles were good. The soup was very savory. Cold sesame noodles - yummy dish as well. Very refreshing and it pair well with the popcorn chicken Fried Tangyuan w/ Ice cream - delicious and packed with flavor. I laughed a bit because it tasted like a drumstick ice cream cone . The peanuts and sesame really gave me that feel but the tangyuan was a great dessert. Pretty pricey tho Would come back for their chicken sandwich!
The food was good, but the service left a bad impression. My friend surprised me with a birthday cake, and no one told us there was a $5 per person cake fee until after the staff had already put a candle on it. Once they mentioned the charge, we told them we'd just take the cake home instead. They removed the candle and never gave it back, which felt unnecessary. I attached a photo of the cake--you can even see the holes where the candle had already been placed. After we finished dinner, we stayed for a few minutes to chat. The server kept walking by and giving us looks that made us feel like we were being rushed. Then a woman, who I think was the manager, came over again to remind us about the cake fee, even though we had already said we weren't eating it there. I completely understand if a restaurant has a cake-cutting fee, but it should be communicated upfront. I've never felt so unwelcome while celebrating a birthday. It's a shame because the food was good, but the service made the experience disappointing.
Came here on a sunday night at 6:30 PM and didn't have to wait to get seated. I liked the lighting and asian decorations inside. Favorite dish was the peashoots and tofu skin! It just had such a unique flavor. The beef and chicken were both cooked super tender, and the msg and black pepper flavors were very strong. It seemed a little pricey for the portion sizes at first, but the dishes were very filling!
Came here during a snowstorm because I was so confident in loving it! However, the BDSM Chicken Sandwich + Tater Tots was unfortunately overpriced and underwhelming. To be fair, the food isn't bad at all. The chicken is fried well, crispy on the outside while tender inside. The tater tots are also crunchy like a tater tot should be. But for $24 price tag, there's nothing special here at all. The chicken sandwich itself is very small (literally about the size of my palm). It has a savory popcorn-chicken style seasoning, but it's not bold enough at all. It also has "spicy sauce" on it but it pretty much tastes like Kewpie and is not spicy in the slightest. Worst part is that the rest of the plate (about 2/3 of it!) is just plain tater tots with regular ketchup. There was no seasoning, no special sauce, no twist; just standard tots. Overall, it's fine food, it's just not worth the price nor trekking out during a snowstorm for (though the latter point may just be me). At that price point, I expected something more filling, flavorful, or memorable. Service was knowledgeable and friendly and they played nice old school Chinese songs. It was also nice and homey inside, though the tables were packed closely together so you can eavesdrop on your neighbors if you're bored.
This place has been on my to-go list 5ever and im happy to have come on a friday night with a friend. We sat by the bar and it was chill. Love the vibe in there. Very cozy for a cold night. Friendly service as well. We ordered hot sesame noodles and it was good! Very light hint of pb. The popcorn chicken were huge! Not no tiny pieces. The mocktails we got were also tasty! As for the tongyuan omg it was my fave! The were pan fried maybe? But the crisp on it then with ice cream was delicious! Just be sure to eat it in one bite or itll get all over you. Don't make my mistake! Overall id come back even though it is a bit pricy but i get it. Its ny. Lol
Loved my lunch at Wenwen! I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I looked at the menu, especially as someone who grew up in a large Taiwanese American community and went to Taipei every year as a child. But I was very pleasantly surprised at 1) how well all the food was cooked, 2) the creative aspects added into some of the dishes, and 3) how affordable it was. I really liked the way they used red yeast paste and tianmian sauce in dishes that would not traditionally have them. I would definitely recommend their lunch, and I will be back to try brunch or dinner!
The food is pretty good and so is the service. The inside is well decorated. The drinks here were good as well. I was definitely skeptical of the cilantro and ice cream combination initially, but I was pleasantly surprised. Their take on the popcorn chicken is good as well. Would've loved to try the BDSM chicken but it was alresdy gone by dinner time. read more
Wenwen in Greenpoint is a Taiwanese restaurant serving unpretentious and punchy Taiwanese dishes. Our friend rented out the alleyway downstairs for a family style meal. Our favorite dishes were the hot honey popcorn chicken, crispy pork terrine, lo ba beng, rich beef noodle soup, Lily Fleming fried rice top with pork jowl and their famous whole BDSM fried chicken (of which they only make 5 a day). We finished off with fried tangyuan with ice cream which made for a satisfying savory and sweet ending. The food was all amazing and we left absolutely stuffed to the brim. The Lo ba beng was good but it felt like just an upscaling of basic Chinese food. The bdsm chicken sandwich was my favorite as the chicken was juicy and flavorful and the tater tots were really crispy. Food 9/10 Solid Taiwanese food. 卤肉饭 was so gas and the portions were quite large too. The shrimp toast was also very unique, I liked the consistency of the shrimp inside paired with the crispy crunch of the exterior. The popcorn chicken was also quite a delight, with the right amount of seasoning that makes you want to keep on eating more. Atmosphere 9/10 Plenty of natural lighting in the restaurant, with a good number of seats. I thought the menu was super cute too. Service 9/10 Friendly! read more
We were able to walk in on a Friday night and get seated at the counter. The inside is dimly lit, the service was attentive, and the food came out pretty quickly. We ordered the popcorn chicken, the pea shoots with tofu skin, lily flemming fried rice and added shrimp, the lettuce cup, and got the fried tan yuan dessert. My favorite item was the popcorn chicken! It was crispy on the outside with a good portion of chicken on the inside and seasoned well. Everything else was good too, but did not particularly stand out. read more

we walked in around 1:30pm for brunch on a snowy day and we were quickly seated at the bar. i really liked the savory soy milk with triple fried youtiao, my friend liked his lo ba beng, and we both enjoyed the tater tots with taiwan dust. overall, all of our dishes were quite tasty! i loved the music that was playing in the background - you could hear it but it wasn't overwhelmingly loud. read more
Get the BDSM Chicken Burger! This chicken burger is not your normal patty, very juicy and spiced well. Definitely need to unlock your jaw to take a bite and a top chicken burger contender in NYC. The Popcorn chicken was similarly spiced well and delicious. The Skirt Steak fried rice was very good. The skirt steak add-on may not have been worth it, I'd skip it next time. The front end and service staff were friendly appreciative of our patronage. We didn't have a rez but we're seated quickly. Ordering was a breeze and food appeared shortly thereafter. I'd definitely go back for the BDSM burger and Popcorn Chicken. read more
The BDSM Chicken - a bird is deboned and deep-fried whole, is an obvious centerpiece for any meal at Wenwen, but the restaurant's kitchen mean only does five birds a night and are available each day; they're usually sold out by 5:05 P.M. Get there for a 5pm dinner reservation if you'll like to have one for the table. I highly recommend it with a beer or two. Super delicious. 3.5/5 Came here at around 2 on a weekend with my boyfriend. We made a reservation so we got seated right away. The restaurant was around 90% filled when we got there. We got a few things to share: stuffed shrimp toast, popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup, and Lo ba beng (which is braised pork belly with rice) We really liked the stuffed shrimp toast. It was very crispy and not heavy at all. The flavor of the popcorn chicken was good but some of the chicken was a little dry. Both of the entree was only okay. While the beef in the beef noodle soup was very tender, the whole dish was a bit under-seasoned and needed more salt. I like runny egg yolk with rice normally but the egg yolk to rice ratio in the Lo ba beng was off to me. There was just way too much egg yolk and I could barely taste anything else. Food came out fast and service was pretty good. It was a good one time experience but I don't think I will come back unless I'm already in the area. read more
BDSM chicken is a must. Very tender meat, crispy skin, and an amazing spicy crust that hits all the notes. Complement this with pea shoots +tofu skin , cold celtuce w numbing spice for veggies. There was a steak noodle dish special which we opted for, but wish we got something else (maybe a second chicken?? ).The steak was grilled medium rare, but quite tough and sinewy. The thick noodles were nice and chewy, but quickly congealed under the steak grease. Liked the idea, but maybe needs another iteration (or different cut of meat). Definitely finish with the tangyuan dessert - deep fried tangyuan (mochi balls) with molten black sesame paste curbed by some ice cream. Topped with peanuts and cilantro - seriously a creative twist on a traditional dessert. Apart from the steak noodles, would definitely be back to get the BDSM chicken. Honestly, if they've run out of chicken for the day, I would consider skipping until another time. read more
Came here for brunch/lunch. Decent food, but slightly overpriced in my opinion! We got the popcorn chicken (my favorite of the things we got), the beef noodle soup, and the Lo ba beng (basically Lu rou fan). Popcorn chicken smothered in a hot honey sauce, a fusion take on a traditional Taiwanese popcorn chicken. The beef noodles were just ok, the beef was super tender with generous portions but the broth could have been a bit more rich in my opinion (tasted slightly watered down). Lo ba beng had good flavor but a bit expensive for what it is. I do like the fusion aspect to the menu, but overall I think if you're looking for good value Asian food, there's probably better elsewhere! But I think this was still good regardless. Cute spot, so you're definitely paying for the ambiance a bit as well (compared to the mom and pop shops in Chinatown) read more

All I can say is wow!! This place serves up some Taiwanese classics with huge portions and amazing flavor. Came on a Sunday for lunch - we didn't have reservations and the tables were all full so we sat at the bar (which was totally fine!) We split the popcorn chicken app, which was 10/10 (huge moist chicken with crispy outside and some sort of magic seasoning). Next my friend and I split the Lily Flemming fried rice and the pea shoots with tofu skin. The fried rice looked simple but was bursting with flavor and the pea shoots were tender and well seasoned with garlic and ginger. My other friend got the beef noodle soup and loved it as well (note that it comes with steak-like portions of beef so be ready!) Exceeded expectations and definitely will be back. read more
Came here around 4:45 on a Friday and was first in line since we wanted to get the BDSM chicken. Got seated and immediately told the waitress to put in an order for it since they only sell 5 a day. We also got the You Fan, Shrimp Floss, and Tang Yuan dessert. BDSM chicken was good, I felt there were maybe some dry pieces which was a little bit of a let down, but it was extremely crispy and I did enjoy the five spice and other seasonings. Shrimp Floss was nice and refreshing. Didn't have any super strong flavors, but the lightness was good to accompany with the chicken. You Fan was probably my favorite dish. The meat had some serious wok hei. I am also just a sucker for sticky rice. Opted to not get it with uni since that would've been an extra $38. Tang Yuan was a nice dessert although I do think it's something you can pretty easily make at home with some frozen tang yuan, vanilla ice cream, PB2 (or similar powdered peanut butter/crushed peanuts), goji berries and cilantro. Still solid though! Everything was quite pricey (BDSM chicken was like $62), but portion was decent and this isn't the most egregious prices I've seen. Overall it's a cute restaurant good for casual date nights or friends. Would probably recommend 2-4 people in your party. Probably 6 max. Really the main egregious part of this restaurant that makes this a hard 4, maybe 3.5 rating is the service. It just is not good. I felt like the workers couldn't be bothered at all to check-in on us the entire time. Seemed like they were just chatting with themselves and laughing and barely paying attention to us or any customers really. But if you're aggressive in flagging them down it shouldn't be too bad. read more

Good: - The food was all really good - the popcorn chicken was solid and I liked the flavor of the fried rice as well. - Chili noodles were tasty but not very spicy so it's more a mild kick, great chewy texture - Food all came out really quickly Bad: - A little cold inside, round tables were hard to make conversation at - We were charged incorrectly (actually were charged only for 40% of our meal) and we decided to go back to the restaurant and tell them about the mistake. Instead of thanking us or acknowledging it, they took 10 minutes to charge us the full price with no apologies or gratitude for waiting or coming back, which made us feel bad for doing the right thing, and now don't feel great about customer support here. Just left a bad taste in the mouth Overall, the food was decent but felt bad about doing the right thing. read more

I finally made it to Wenwen this weekend. I was going to be in the area and made myself a reservation to sit at the bar. This was the move. Between Valentines Day and a long Presidents Day weekend the restaurant was very crowded and they couldn't accommodate walk-ins [LOL to the party of 7 thinking they could walk-in]. The hostess, though, was extremely kind to everyone and friendly to me. The portions at Wenwen are on the larger side. I had the numbing celtuce salad [$14], which really lives up to its name. It wasn't very spicy but there was a bit of a kick to it and I'm assuming the "numbing" sensation comes from the sichuan peppercorn. I also had the beef noodle soup [$21] which was really what I needed on a cold, rainy day. It gave me life. The beef shank was so tender, it fell apart in my mouth. The broth was super flavorful and complex. I actually finished the whole thing. Sadly, I skipped on dessert as I was pretty full. I had the Pink Venom [$18], which is a vodka based drink with lychee. It's pretty fizzy. It wasn't my favorite but it was nonetheless tasty. I have to say, the bathroom is something to behold with its disco ball and all around party vibe. I'd recommend checking it out even if you don't have to go. $67 after tax and tip. read more

We reserved for a party of 2 at 12:45, and they still seated us even though we were a bit late :) server was nice and gave good recs. the food was an interesting take on Taiwanese food. Both of us found the ground pork for the lettuce cups to be a bit too salty (we had to order rice). I wish they gave more lettuce or at least it would be free to ask for more lettuce.. The popcorn chicken was so delicious! Blew me away- chicken was cooked so juicy and seasoned so well. The hot honey added such a nice touch. It was airy and Cristy and honestly perfect. Definitely my favorite menu item I tried. The tater tot Dan bing was a bit mediocre but very straightforward (eggs, cheese, scallions, and tater tot) flavor. Overall I'd say we ordered all oily dishes so trying something fresher for more variety would've been nice. Good experience! read more
A Taiwanese restaurant worth the trek to greenpoint in brooklyn! GET THE BDSM CHICKEN I went for dinner at 4:30 pm to wait on line to be one of the first out of 5 for the bdsm chicken. i recommend making reservation at 5 for the bdsm chicken because they only serve 5 a day. the BDSM chicken was crispy on outside, tender on inside and just enough fattiness. the spicy vegetables on top complimented the saltiness and crispiness of the chicken. worth the wait. sacha hot honey popcorn chicken was my favorite, because it was crispier than the BDSM and you could taste the basil and honey flavor along with MSG and salt. this was one of the best fried chicken I have had. beef noodles was a bit dry, but we had the lily flemming fried rice and the pork was perfectly fried and there were tons of seasonings in the rice. this is fried rice done correctly. we had the fried tangyuan for the dessert and the cold ice cream contrasted with the warm and squishy tangyuan. the texture was amazing. wenwen nailed it on their frying technique and seasoning profile, and i want to come back for their brunch menu read more
100/10 spot! Highly recommend if you are in the area and craving elevated and authentic Taiwanese food. We were lucky enough to snag a fried chicken (only 5 a day!). And it really delivered! The skin was crispy and the dry rub was one of the best! Chicken was moist even though it was white meat, which is a feat in of itself. The broth of the noodles was stewed with care and tasted exactly like the ones from Taipei (yong Kang streets). I loved this place and would definitely come back for the chicken. The hype around Wenwen has died down a little, which means it's a bit easier to get one of the limited-to-5-per-day first-come-first-serve BDSM chickens now. We were the first party at 5pm on a weekday but based on our visit I'd say you'd have a solid chance arriving at 5:30 or even 6pm on a weekday and scoring one. The chicken didn't disappoint - it was juicy, crisp, and intensely flavorful, a really creative take on fried chicken. Was it worth $62? I wouldn't be clamoring to come back for it, but if a group of friends wanted to come again and split one I also wouldn't be opposed. Other dishes were enjoyable as well - good luroufan is so surprisingly hard to find in NYC that Wenwen's $18 "lo ba beng" version seems like a good find. I also enjoyed the diced shrimp-and-youtiao lettuce cups, although it came with 6-7 small romaine lettuce leaves, not nearly enough to use up all the filling, and the waitress said it would be $5 more for an extra order (of raw romaine lettuce leaves). Seriously? I do actually like that there's only one dessert option - they know it's a winner. If you come to Wenwen, just get the fried tangyuan dessert. read more

RATING: 8.3/10 PRO TIP: They only have 5 BDSM chicken but try your luck as we got the last one around 9pm! BDSM CHICKEN Probably their star item, costing at a whopping $62 (Nov 2023) and comes with around 8 pieces of chicken. The dry rub on this is quite reminiscent of taiwanese fried chicken with a bit of heat. I think I've def had juicier chicken, and it was tasty overall but not sure if it was worth the price tag tbh. FLY HEAD A taiwanese classic, with a boost of heat from the peppers in there and def needs a bowl of rice to get the full experience. I would say that this was a great fly head, but nothing so different or outstanding that you have to try if you're used to fly head. But for those unfamiliar highly recommend this authentic taiwanese dish. FRIED TOFU** Probably my fave dish of the night as someone who grew up with a lot of Taiwanese food, this was beautifully soft inside with a bold, aromatic, intensely savory and even slightly floral outside rub with a delicious tangy saltiness added by the sauce. What a unique flavor journey and, while reminiscent of lots of great Taiwanese tofu dishes, is novel and inventive. Def get this. My favorite Taiwanese fusion place in New York City. Try their weekday lunch menu. I love their pork chop Bento box and cold sesame noodles. Best I've had in New York so far. Vibe is fun. Would recommend as a casual hang out with friends with the cool hipster ambience. Service never disappoints. read more

The food is generally very good--I especially loved the pork terrine, which was perfectly crispy on the outside and packed with flavor. Another standout was the fried tangyuan dessert, a unique twist on a classic Taiwanese treat.
