Solid Chinese spot in Greenpoint area serving predominantly Sichuan style Chinese food. Went on a Saturday around 6:30pm for a party of 6. We called 15min or so before just to check if there was seating and they were kind enough to hold the table for us. At any rate our group ordered most of the items off the mains and some apps. All were really solid, but I'd say highlights for me were the Dan Dan noodles (always a hit) and the Sichuan spicy boiled pork. Both had excellent mala balance. The chicken steak with was also tasty with the ginger scallion sauce. Most of the items were pretty similar to what you can expect from other popular sichuan spots in the city. Service was solid and attentive despite there being really only one person working front of house. They definitely run a tight ship since there isn't actually that much seating (maybe 20 or so seats?). Definitely cozy spot. Overall, this is a really solid option in Greenpoint if you're looking for some good Sichuan food for a weeknight takeout or casual dinner. No frills, just solid food. Solid spot for sichuan!! They don't skimp on the spice. My favorite dishes were the Dan Dan noodles and mapo tofu. The sauce for the Dan Dan noodles was great, and I appreciated that it came on the side (and they give a LOT). Both these dishes also had good amount of spice, sichuan pepper, and ground pork. The eggplant was also solid, but it came out last so I was too full to enjoy it. The cucumber and string beans were solid but not the best (both have some crunch to it if you like that). I did not like the stewed pork (a bit too meat heavy) but a couple of my friends did. You have to order rice separately. Service is nice but the kitchen was a bit slow. It's a small space with just a few tables and a lot of counter seating (almost 50/50 table seating vs counter seating), but it didnt see like there was ever too long of a wait on a Friday night. Squeezing in close to closing after a long wait at the nail salon. Despite being 10 minutes out from closing the waitress seated us encouraging an order soon as possible. We went with the dan Dan noodles (beef) and eggplant with beef.... First time having Dan Dan noodles and not particularly something I'd reorder, the thick nutty sauce was good, but nit something I'd want poured over my noodles, thankfully it was served on the side. The eggplant was DIVINE!!!! Chinese eggplant with ground beef and chili garlic sauce, absolutely delicious, however it doesn't come with rice, you have to order on the side (I feel as if this type of dish should come with white rice always). Intimate vibe, dimly lit, and perfect for a quiet date. I can see returning to try out some of the other items on the menu. My rule of thumb is that restaurants that only serve a few things on the menu must be amazing - Chiko lived up to that bill! I got both the mapo tofu and the eggplant dishes with beef to go - they were deliciously spicy, warm, and just felt like a comforting home cooked meal. I was thinking they might be the same sauce, but the eggplant sauce was actually a bit tangier / sour (not in a bad way!) than the mapo sauce. The portion size is great as well, which honestly makes this place a pretty good deal as well. I will definitely be coming back to Chiko! A wonderful casual option. read more

GREAT PLACE def I'll come back!! modern feeling dining area and chic bar counter. It was Sunday they open at 2pm. It was not so packed we enjoyed our conversation. Chiko is a gem on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint. Although we only stopped in for a little taster, the dishes we ordered were showstoppers. The honey spicy chicken, Dan Dan Noodles and Marinated Cucumbers were all so delicious and wonderfully prepared. The room's aesthetic is very cool and relaxing. Excellent takeout joint in Greenpoint. They have a small menu which I'm guessing they experiment with from time to time. Their current menu has a wicked mapo tofu, might just be the best I have ever had. A tofu noodle( they have a chicken version too) which is heavy on the Szechuan peppercorn but also has a significant sour umaminess to it with the very familiar numbing feel which may or may not appeal to everyone. The tofu is large, soft and pillowy and soaks up the broth beautifully. I noticed the flavor actually getting better and better with every bite. The noodles have a good bite to them and stay consistently firm throughout the meal. The garlic green beans side was simple and also very delicious. Will most definitely order again! read more

What a gem of a sichan place! Constant rotating menu with their maple tofu being the only seemingly permanent staple so far. Everything I've had there is delicious. So far it's only been take out only and there's one table outside but i heard recently they started having indoor dining again. This is an absolute must if you live in Greenpoint for takeout. If they had eat in seating I'd recommend it to everyone but it's their loss! The prices are so generous for the quality of food. I'll be honest. I found Chiko through Yelp and it was such a good suggestion (woohoo!). I came here for my birthday celebration with the bf and it was just mind blowing. We knew it was not your traditional omakase with just sushi pieces so we were fully prepped and excited for the meal hehe. Omakase list: - Foie-rrero - Hamachi (this was really good, I'd want another plate of this if I can - look at the photo!) - Robusuta (this was also mind blowing omg. The taste of the lobster with the truffle was UNBELIEVABLE) - Negitoro - Akami (duuuuuude - this was bomb af. This really hit the spot because Chef Xiao actually smoked the piece of tuna and the smokiness worked EXTREMELY WELL with tuna. I think this was probably my favorite or second favorite dish in this entire omakase) - Hirame - Shima Aji - Madai - Uni (um ok. This is either my favorite or second favorite out of this entire omakase. And this uni piece had caviar on it.. the flavors were just so unreal and exploded into my mouth. I can't even explain it. The uni tasted so fresh too UGH. I love it and would've ordered another one if I had room lol) - Hotate (yum) - Oh Toro (very interesting because I've never had olive in japanese cuisine and it surprisingly worked well). - Wow-gyu - Sichuan Conclusion - 100% would come back when the menu changes. Such an amazing and talented chef! The food was excellent with every fish dish. Well balanced. Distinctive, and the rice temperature was consistent, which if you're a big fan of sushi you'd know it's hard to achieve. And my god, the flavors, each bite the mix of flavors, rice, freshness of each fish piece was just amazingly well done. The chef told us most of the fish was dry-aged, to overcome the distance from Japan. You can't always expect a fresh catch from Japan or from the west coast all the time, so he worked with each type of fish to bring out its best amount of fat, taste and texture. The result is that each piece is full of flavor and still tastes so fresh and yummy. I also really appreciate that he uses what is locally available and that he tries to work with different fish, to bring out the best of each fish. Most sushi restaurants in NYC pride themselves in getting the freshest fish from Japan or somewhere else, and they never use the constraint of the distance to work for them and make the fish taste even better. Creative, freshness, special, distinctive, ... are the few words I can think to describe this sushi restaurant. Twelve courses plus a dessert was plentiful. The only weak part of the entire menu is probably the dessert, they can definitely work on it. We had the Sichuan ice cream with chocolat piece and sea salt, but the ice cream does not taste spicy and the chocolate can be fresher as well. But to find such a gem in Greenpoint is just a treat. read more

Good service and very good food. You can tell the chef really put a lot of thought into the flavor combinations and some of the plates I thought were quite unique. There were a few home runs and a few average pieces. The ambiance is a little austere and had too much empty space. Why only 3 stars? Honestly, because we left very hungry. At this price point, it's not really forgivable to leave without being full. I would actually give 2 stars, but I really liked the chef and appreciate what he's trying to do; at the same time, I wouldn't recommend this place for that reason. Just one "filler" course of perhaps a rice or udon dish would have done it. Honestly, a bowl of fried rice would have helped. The pieces had very little shari which may have been partly why. What an underrated omakase sushi restaurant tucked away in Greenpoint! All seats are counter seats, and the restaurant doesn't really seat more than 15 or so, so you'll definitely have a more intimate and quiet experience. The interior is modern yet minimal, and had a nice amount of sunset light streaming in through the front windows. The starting bite was so good. It was shaped like a Ferrero Rocher, but was made of foie gras and chocolate. The rest of the pieces were really delicious too, and there was a good balance of creativity and fresh fish. We came here for the soft opening yesterday. We heard about this new spot from a family member who shared the menu with us. (I think there are changes to the menu every week). We were impressed by chef Xiao's creativity. The fish were super fresh. I believe most of the fish is flown in from Japan. Some of the fish was aged to perfection for the courses. My favorite course was the "home run". This piece consisted of the three types of tuna, which melted in my mouth with caviar on top. How fancy? The entire menu has some fusion...Italian and French influence. For example, mackerel with shaved cheese. That's a first! This is not your traditional sushi spot. It's different in a good way. Service was good. We came as a party of four and had the entire restaurant to ourselves, probably due to the long weekend (labor day). The restaurant is quite spacious. Glad I finally tried this place! I picked up a little menu a while back and was reminded today on Instagram that today was the last day to try the Three Cup Chicken before rotating their menu. Writing a review on two things. Firstly food taste. I could've made better rice and tofu at home and I was floored at the price. It wasn't a good spice combo and just left overtly peppercorn taste in my mouth. Portion size was good but for the price the taste is really not up to par. Secondly I witnessed someone who manages or works at the business follow one of my neighbors around the block and start screaming at them. I'm sitting there confused. All to find out the woman was yelling that the person let their puppy pee near the establishment. For those that know.. you can't know exactly when and where puppies will pee. And from what my neighbor explained to me, the pee was on the sidewalk feet from the doorway. To follow and ridicule someone who's just going on a stroll is pathetic. Really interesting and creative take on omakase. The dishes are all uniquely prepared with very robust flavors. The chef and server are both incredibly hospitable and share their obvious passion and knowledge of each dish very deliberately and delicately. I would say the atmosphere while lacking a bit of nuance is very well kempt and unpretentious. The quiet environment demands your attention at the bar and focused on the performance. My review is a bit dated as I dined at Chiko about 3-4 months ago. At the time there were only 7 other people dining while we were there (it was still during the soft opening I believe) and it felt very intimate. Not sure if it's still the case but at the time it was BYOB. We were highly impressed by Chef Xiao and his team. Chef Xiao was very attentive, explained each course and answered all of our questions. The fish was very fresh and flown from Japan. The place is not traditional sushi and had some very interesting twists (e.g. mackerel and shaved parmigiano). Came here with my sushi lover friend but left kinda disappointed. I personally is a big fan of traditional omakase but my friend really likes creative style - we have been to more than 20 omakase places in NYC and this place is not the one we will come again. Walking into this place we got a very warm welcome. I like the decoration on the wall. The light here is very dim and the ambient music is somewhat "Starbucks Jazz" style... the first impression I had was that it didn't look like a Japanese restaurant - everything in the open area/kitchen you saw all the preparation equipments in metal/stainless steel. Only 6 people in the counter seats. The first dish we had was the Foie-Reero, made with goose liver, walnut and chocolate. The piece itself tasted great but it's little odd to be served at the very beginning- it's like dessert and very heavy. Then we had a few "fish in broth" dishes which were very special and delicately prepared. The sushi nigiri was a big disappointment to us. I understand each place has own recipes on rice and flavor. But the rice here was falling apart- not tender not fluffy... and it tasted a bit too sour to me. I believe the fish itself was good but the flavor of soy and other ingredients and spice were too strong that mask the original freshness. Overall I feel it's a bit like mixture of several good ingredients but the outcome is special and odd. So if u are a fan of traditional sushi omakase, I won't recommend u come here at all. I don't know how to describe it but Chef Xiao's menu is exquisite. He perfectly blends different flavors to produce a kaiseki that is out of this world. It's a blend of sublime ingredients such as aged tuna, Kumamoto oysters, and Tiger's milk. I've known Xiao since his days at Dojo but this menu extends way beyond typical omakase. Honesty, Xiao was probably under-utilized as a sushi chef at Dojo. Now at Chiko, he can implement his own creative direction on a menu that tells an entire story, wave by wave. read more
