I really liked the boboji's tasty broth but I do think the skewer portions are skimpy for the prices - would be more worth it to get the mala soup that will come with a lot of the toppings ready. I've been here three times at this point, twice for dine in and once for take out. This place is often packed at night (even on weekdays and especially during the colder months). I was going through a malatang phase from winter all the way through spring so this was literally calling my name. I love the options they have to build your own mala tang for a set price because over in Flushing, the options are quite limited unless you specifically go to the restaurants where you grab the ingredients yourself and pay by weight. So for the price and amount of ingredients you get in one bowl of soup here, I'd say it's pretty great. You also get to choose the type of soup base so if you're not a spice lover, you don't have to get the classic malatang. They also have a bunch of other things on the menu but my normal go-to is basically just a bowl of customized malatang with an appetizer to share and some drinks. read more

I caught up with a friend at Mala Town and it was my first time having skewers in hot pot broth. I had a very specific broth in mind, but the server described it differently, so it ended up being a different spice than I expected. Wanted to try this place out because of its name, assuming it specializes in all things mala. Not busy at all when we went so service was fast. We ordered the signature mala noodles with their signature spicy broth (you can pick the tomato broth if you prefer non spicy). I get choice of 4 ingredients to add so I picked beef balls, pork intestines, sliced fish and I forgot the 4th ingredient. Veggies like cabbage, tofu and seaweed are included already. We also ordered the Szechuan style wontons and Szechuan cold noodles. They give complimentary spicy seaweed as an appetizer. I was thrown off at first then started to enjoy the umami taste of the seaweed. The mala noodles was disappointing, considering it's supposed to be their signature dish. I've had better spicy noodles elsewhere -- nothing special. The cold noodles portion was small and only OK. I probably like the Szechuan wontons the most. We got medium and I thought it was pretty spicy, but my friend did not.
