I gotta give up to Wendy's! I'll admit I've always been a big fan of their foods.........I love the burgers, chili, baked potatoes, salads, and most of all........ the vanilla frosty!!!! Every since I had my 1st experience of eating at Wendy's, back when Wendy's was located in the Moanalua Shopping center back in the 80's...........I've been a loyal fan! When I was a kid, I've often though about how weird it was, that Wendy's hamburger patties were "square" shaped, verse the traditional "round" shape. Don't ask my why...........I guess I'm weird like that! Lol! Today was extremely hot, and since I missed out on getting some custard pie...........I decided to run down to Wendy's to get myself a Vanilla Frosty. Don't know why........but Wendy's Vanilla Frosty has a taste that just "does it for me!" Again, don't ask my why...........I guess I'm weird like that! Lol! Unfortunately for me............there are not a whole lot of Wendy's restaurants on the east side of the island.......most of the Wendy's restaurants are on the west side of the island. The closest Wendy's for me is still pretty far away, as it's located near the Moanalua/Airport area. This particular location is always pretty busy (anytime of the day), as the drive through really cranks out a line of cars, and the restaurant itself is pretty busy too. I walked in there this afternoon, and it was pretty crowded. But I gotta say the cashiers at the register were pretty efficient, friendly, & moved the line quickly today. Now don't get me wrong...........I've also experienced bad & slow service here also, so I'm gonna tell you it's basically a crap shoot! As I had mentioned before, as big of a fan I am about Wendy's foods............I found myself even a bigger fan of the founder - Dave Thomas. As a kid, I would see a lot of the funny commercials on T.V. that featured Dave Thomas, which led me to read a story about Dave Thomas. He was born to a single mom, then put up for adoption. He dropped out of high school to work & create his empire, and upon his death back in 2002, he left a legacy of the - "Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption". Gross! They may have remodeled the outside recently but apparently they didn't order new buns. So disappointed with this recent order. You guys are feeding people and have a basic obligation to the public to exercise basic food safety and food handling. I used to work in the food service industry as front of house and back of house and everything in between, to include being a cook at some point. That said, I would have NEVER allowed this item to make it to a table - or - in a bag for a customer. I know it's hard to find workers that care but this is on everyone from the top down. I often walk past this location during my lunch break walks as well as my walk at the end of the day to my bus stop, and it's very busy during those lunch and dinner times. The drive-thru wraps around the building, but there's usually plenty of parking for dine-in patrons. I decided to stop in for lunch during one of my walks and the order line stretched from the counter to the back door. I took my place in line and noticed that the restaurant appeared very clean and the furnishings in good shape. Local Hawaiian music was playing over the dining room speakers. The line moved along slowly due to only one of the two counter registers being open. During my entire visit, I never saw both registers open at the same time to help facilitate the line of customers that remained stretched across the dining room. Despite the crowd, the kitchen staff seemed to be well coordinated without the chaos and drama I've witnessed in other fast food eateries. Once I placed my order, I got my self-serve beverage and by the time I returned to the counter my food was available for pick. My order was correct and tasted great. By the way, the self-serve beverage and condiment areas were stocked and clean. I deducted 1 star for management not opening up both registers during a busy meal time, and for the Manager (Bernie?) who took my order failing to smile. My order included: $5 bacon double stack biggie bag (burger, fries, drink, nuggets), a large chili, a harvest chicken salad, and a North Pacific cod sandwich. I was a teenager when Wendy's first open, and the food was great. Based on this order, I can't say that anymore. The $5 bacon double stack biggie bag is fine - if you are looking for quantity. It certainly meets that criteria. Quality is another story. The burger patties and bacon were flavorless and dry. The soda (supposedly Dr. Pepper) tasted strange; I think maybe the mix on the tanks was off. The fries and nuggets were unimpressive. The harvest chicken salad was not bad - minus the chicken, which was tough and dry. The mixed greens were fresh and the candied walnuts, feta, and cranberry added nice flavor touches. The chili was the best of the bunch. Not as meaty as it used to be, but it still holds up. It comes with crackers. The cod sandwich, like the burger patties, was overcooked and lacking in flavor. Apparently, this Wendy's is the busiest one in the country! It's not a shock to me because every time I go here, the drive-thru line goes all the way around the store and almost into the main road. Super popular, especially because there are multiple highways near it. If you do have the time to sit in and park your car in their huge parking lot, it is a lot less busy. You can have your order in five minutes instead of waiting in the drive thru for thirty minutes. In terms of their food, so far, everything I've had is delicious... even their salads. I'm the type to always take out the lettuce and tomatoes out of my burgers, but I tried their Southwest Avocado salad. And I actually liked it! I also love that you can request to customize your food the way you want it. I can have my guacamole on the side, or request to have no cheese since I'm lactose intolerant. They also have a new limited time only sandwich called Bacon Maple Chicken, and you can have it grilled, spicy, or homestyle. It has bacon, cheese, their special maple sauce and of course chicken. You can also request for additional ingredients like lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, or everything!! I'd like to applaud all the workers here, because despite how busy it is, the employees always treat their customers with a happy smile! The workers here are so generous and accommodating. I can put up with the flys because I can shoo them away and it's not their fault that the automatic doors don't always close or they do t have the people to wipe the sticky stuff off the tables. However if you want quick service this is not the place to eat in. I have literally stood in front of the counter for 15 minutes while the single counter help is scurrying around putting together the orders, refilling the salad tray bin from the refrigerator or restocking paper and other thing. The manager of course is at the drive in station serving the line of cars outside. I guess if you have to come to the only Wendy's in Honolulu, my suggestion is to order from the drive in and then come into eat. Drove to the closest Wendy's at 0630, before work, which is approximately 15 minutes from my house. There were cones blocking the drive through so I parked my car and checked their hours online. It said 0600 so I called, first I got an answer and a hang up, I proceeded to call again and a women said they were under new management and they would be open in 10 minutes. I waited 15 minutes and saw several workers outside so I drove up and asked them when they would be open. Two men proceeded to tell me they were closed because they were cleaning. Not telling me when they would open. I left and called to speak to a manager. The manager answered the phone not giving his name, I asked when they would be done cleaning and start serving food. He stated they are cleaning the restaurant because they are open 24/7. He said they had been cleaning for the past 24 hours and then asked me if I wanted dirty food. He then hung up on me. Very confused why the first person told me 10 minutes and then the manager could not notify me what time they would be open to serve. Also very rude he hung up the phone on me. There is not a Wendy's closer to me but looks like I will be going out of my way in the future if I want to eat there. There customer service was very poor. So every once in a while, we like to run out for a little fast food. It's a guilty pleasure. We know that it's not fine dining, but sometimes, some Wendy's chili and a frosty is just what you need. I have not made it a habit to review many fast food places, but this one was noteworthy for the great service. The cashier was friendly and helpful, and they actually provided service to the table. Excellent. The food was... acceptable, which is about what one can reasonably expect. Mostly, it was fine, but the chili too saucy -- not enough substance -- and that's a no-no for me. Gotta have plenty of meat and beans. Otherwise, everything was passable -- the burgers, the fries, the chicken nuggets, and of course, the Frosties. By the way, a word to the wise: stick with the classic chocolate. Do not be drawn in by the vanilla, which simply isn't as good. Parking was plentiful and free in their lot. Nestled on the slopes of moana lua just outside the airport is the resting spot of good old Wendy's. Wendy's is home of fresh cooked burgers, chili, frostys, and good deals! I came one evening with my Friend Kristie M. I told her I would buy her dinner and she could choose anyplace and she chose the place of her birth, good old Wendy's. The dining area is clean and comfortable, there was the subtle sound of the Kaau Crater Boys playing from the speakers above. If I were writing this review solely on value they would get a 5 star high five! My friend Kristie got a jr. Bacon Cheesebuger, 5 piece nugget, small fries, small chili, a medium drink, and a small frosty all for about $7! As this is her first dinner for the night, our goal was to keep it under $10, MISSION COMPLETE! One tip I did learn fro watching Kristie order is that Frostys are only $0.50 during the summer! I don't worry about being that person paying in change, my friend Kristie paid in almost all pennies she dug from the bottom of her purse and the worker took it with a smile saying she no longer had to call for change! This is definitely not an establishment I would recomend if you are in any sort of a rush. I mean, I stood in line for about 20 min before it was my turnto order. They seem to be adequately staffed as you see workers zipping too and fro in the background like busy bees making the food. The fact that they only had one person on register and like 15 people in line however was disheartening. Service here was terrible it felt like the guy taking our order in the drive thru was trolling us having us repeat our order 5 times and when we pull up to receive our food and drinks, the same guy who took our order was making our drinks & ALL 3 of our drinks were not even filled 2/3 of the way the girl handing them over to us even looked at us weird when giving them over thinking we'd ignore that fact but didn't correct it till we asked them to please be filled properly. She didn't say anything and " fixed " it but tasted like she definitely filled the rest with water bc the 2 soda were flat and watery and I know what Powerade should taste like and it was super watered down she even filled it way too much that there was zero air space between the drink and lid and it was pouring out the top when she was handing it over.
