I was looking for something new in the area and rolling through Yelp when I came across this cute little diner so I decided let's go have dinner. I found it really whimsical, knowing that this was a place that's really low-key hidden in a neighborhood which made it even more enjoyable. They have inside and outside seating and it really looks like a diner from back in the day with a little hippie touch, we created it right away when we came in and asked where we like to sit and give a menu as well as a happy hour menu. The menu is small, but there's so many delicious choices on there unfortunately, we did not get to try the deviled eggs cause they were out of one of the ingredients so we definitely have to come back but we order the mac & cheese 10 out of 10 with hot sauce. The fries were nicely crispy and slightly over salted from my taste. the chicken biscuit was a 10 out of 10 and my burger was a 10 out of 10 I didn't make a edit to my burger because I don't like bread and butter pickles but they were more than welcome to give me the dill pickles. We didn't know that it was happy hour so we did get some Palomas which were a 20 out of 20 we definitely have to come back and try the eggs and many other menu items. We didn't get any dessert because we were way too full, but it looked very great on pictures. They will be seeing us in the future no doubt.
Found this place while searching the internet for Phoenix's best chicken fried steak. I will say it's definitely one of the best I've had in a while and I really enjoyed eating here. Service was great and the food was even better. They also serve mimosas by the bottle. This place definitely hit the spot for what I was looking for.
I have been a few times in the past but realized they moved and upgraded on my latest visit. Same great retro diner feel with yummy burgers, fries, and sandwiches. Cute for a date night in the downtown area or with family/friends. Service was great and helpful, and our picky eater gives it two thumbs up! We will be back

The Lil Birdy Chicken Biscuit and Brussels Sprouts were part of the Happy Hour menu and were only $5 each, making them an incredible value. The Big Jim was over $14 and was hearty, satisfying, and packed with flavor. At first, we were a little surprised by some of the menu prices, but once we discovered their Happy Hour specials, it made a lot more sense. Happy Hour is available: All Day Tuesday Monday-Thursday from 3 PM-6 PM Friday & Saturday from 10 PM-Close The staff was friendly, attentive, and helped make the experience even better. Overall, Welcome Diner is a family-friendly restaurant with fresh locally sourced food, great accessibility features, a fun atmosphere, and excellent Happy Hour deals. I just ate the best breakfast I've had in Phoenix. I'm not kidding. On a whim I crossed seventh street and found a very hip corner in the Garfield district. I have been wanting to check out the welcome diner and it's a quiet weekend in Phoenix so here we go. First, it was busy; I'm guessing it typically is. We found our favorite bar spot quickly though and got to it. You get a great view of the chefs hard at work when sitting here and the show was awesome. Old school diner meets modern culinary fare (chicken livers are the first thing on the menu) and these gentlemen were putting in the work! Watching them put together chicken fried steak, perfect eggs, the best breakfast potato's I've ever had and more was a treat. It also made for some serious anticipation and I was not disappointed. Best chicken fried steak in town I would bet money on it. Potatoes roasted and seasoned to perfection and a melt in your mouth biscuit served with homemade jam. It was wonderful and surreal simultaneously. Our hostess was charming and greeted us with a huge, infectious smile. Am I coming back?? Silly question. The chef even complimented my hat! A nice reminder that the Welcome Diner, like myself, is LOCAL! Do not miss.
Food was a 10/10 and always keeps me coming back. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We tried the fried chicken sandwhich, Mac and cheese (to die for), and the pancakes for a little sweetness. Service is quick and all the staff is very personable. All this food and drinks for $36 which is a steal. Cute little restaurant and can't wait to come back!
Solid 4. Here's the honest truth. I was a solo diner and sat at the bar. I was approached when my order was taken and when I paid my bill. Service was friendly - just not attentive. I ordered the chicken biscuit and some fries. The taste was good. I would recommend giving wet naps with the meal (like a barbecue place) because my hands were so so sticky with honey. Sitting at the bar gave me a window on the kitchen. Can't say I loved seeing the eggs for deviled eggs had a 2/28 label on the container and it was 3/6. Also - the "Mac" for the Mac and cheese was cooked and came out of a bag. Would return. Probably would order something different.
In a word: amazing. Fantastic food, great service, and killer vibe. Everything we ate was awesome - from the Caesar salad to the fried green tomatoes sandwich to the house made ginger lemonade, all were excellent. Vibe was throwback at 100%. Would definitely recommend! Also great for kids!
I enjoyed the feeling overall, very family friendly. It had a great feel and I liked the theme/vibe. The bathrooms were okay, like the theme but not the cleanest. The hostess and the waiter were amazing. We had the pleasure of talking to a cool gentlemen who was a cool native of Phoenix. I traveled from Tucson and wanted to give this Diner a try. Overall I would give this place a 3/5 stars. Huevos rancheros- disappointed it wasn't the traditional salsa bandera (onion, tomato, Jalepeno) but it was good. Different twist with the rib with eggs. The chips were soggy when I got my food. I liked the red onions, it added a little kick to the food on top of what the food offers to begin with. 6/10 Eggs over medium- not too runny how I like it. Velvety, the eggs weren't burnt crispy and was delightful. Meat was umami, savory and tender. Different than what I expected, had a little kick of spice. Beans were dry and bland. Not very impressed. 3/10 Pancakes were okay. A little dry for my taste but they were fluffy. The syrup with it was tasty. 5/10. I enjoyed this restaurant but I think it was a bit pricey for everything we ordered.
Good food, spoiled by bad service. We have been curious about this place ever since we stopped and talked to the person seating people while we were waiting for our reservation across the street. He mentioned a pickle martini, which I ordered at lunch and was very good. My wife ordered the welcome burger and enjoyed it except for them getting the toppings wrong. Our granddaughter really liked her mac and cheese and there was a generous serving of sliced fruit. And my Jose Burger had just enough spice and was very tasty. That what's the good. So we stopped here for lunch on a Friday about 12:30 with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Our initial server barely said two words to us and we felt like we were an imposition. When we ordered my wife asked did they have Pepsi or Coke products he said we have bottles and cans of everything, so she ordered a Coke. It was Mexican Coke which is fine, but $5, and it wasn't until we noticed other people had cans of regular Coke and realized he did not give us a choice. When we ordered our burgers, again he barely said two words and did not ask us how we wanted them cooked even though the menu says cook to order. When we got them they were very rare, see the picture, which we're okay with although we would have ordered them a little more done. My wife said no onions on hers, and of course there was onions on her berger. Later we were served by a waitress who was much more friendly and we realize was probably just not there yet when we sat down, so the initial waiter didn't really care what we thought since we weren't going to be his customers at the end. So sadly what could have been a very pleasant lunch was spoiled by the initial waiter, even though the food was good we may not be back.
** 1 STAR ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SERVICE. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!** If I could give zero stars for service, I would. My friends and I are five women of color visiting from California, and we decided to stop at Welcome Diner around **8:07 PM** because it looked like a cute spot to grab some food. Unfortunately, what we got was an experience that made us feel anything but welcome. Our server, Antonio had an attitude from the start and acted like doing his job was an inconvenience. The restaurant was NOT busy, so there was absolutely no excuse for how poorly we were treated. We ordered mac and cheese, fried chicken livers, two steak frites, a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and Brussels sprouts. By 8:53 PM, we STILL had not received our food. I politely asked Antonio where our order was, especially since the restaurant closes at 9 PM. Meanwhile, a group of approximately six WHITE men who arrived AFTER us had already received their food. Then a single customer who came in around 8:30 PM also got their food before our table. At that point, we were sitting there watching everyone else eat while wondering what exactly was happening with our order. Then our food finally comes out--and guess what? **THE STEAK FRITES WERE COLD. LITERALLY COLD TO THE TOUCH.** So we waited forever just to receive food that clearly had been sitting somewhere instead of being brought to our table. And again, the restaurant wasn't even busy. I told Antonio the steaks were cold and that I didn't want them. I asked him to take BOTH steaks back and simply remove them from the bill. His response? "You guys want a free steak." No. We wanted the food we ordered to be served properly. I repeated that I didn't want the steaks and just wanted them removed from the bill. His response: "More for us." EXCUSE ME?! literally WTF. After already receiving terrible service, waiting nearly an hour for our food, watching other customers who arrived after us get served first, and then receiving cold food, THAT was his response? That comment was incredibly disrespectful and completely unnecessary. It turned an already terrible experience into an absolutely unacceptable one. And somehow it gets even better: THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS WE ORDERED NEVER EVEN CAME OUT. And as five women of color, sitting there watching groups of other customers who arrived after us receive their food while we continued waiting, the treatment absolutely gave us the impression that something was off. I'm not going to tell anyone else what their intentions were, but i know how the experience made us feel, and it did not feel welcoming. We were visiting from California and were genuinely excited to try this place. Instead, we left feeling disrespected and completely disappointed. Welcome Diner? More like Welcome... if you're willing to tolerate terrible service. Management needs to seriously rethink how customers are being treated and retrain Antonio on basic customer service, professionalism, and how to speak to paying customers. Management itself needs to learn how to properly handle a customer complaint instead of standing by while the situation gets worse. We came for dinner. We got cold food, missing food, an attitude, and disrespect. Never again
My husband and I stopped by during happy hour... loved the atmosphere, service and food. Will definitely return. $1 beer can't beat that. The brussel sprouts were delicious!!!
Absolutely incredible. The service was amazing everyone cares about what they do multiple staff checked on us and made us feel right at home. The food was incredible the sauce was so consistent and had such deep flavor profiles starting off as a beef gravy into a deep dive peppercorn and shallot. The steak was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender. Don't forget to order a biscuit it's almost got a sourdough taste and the jam they made was such an incredible compliment that flirted with deep sweet and tart flavors absolutely worth returning for alone. The small diner feel and the fact that it was nestled in a small family neighborhood made it feel like a true hidden gem. I'll definitely be coming back. As a former server and cook these are the places I love to visit.

We came here after discovering it on google and were blown away. Everything we tried was phenomenal.. poutine fries, welcome burger, Mac and cheese. I also had a cocktail that was the special that evening and it was incredible. Cute little place with great service. They will be seeing us again!! read more

Service was amazing and food was good. Classic diner vibe but the food is so much better than what you'd expect. We had the honey chicken biscuit (wish they used hot honey for this instead) and the fried green tomato sandwich. Both good but I'd pass on any of their cocktails - they're meh. Such a cute space though. Although smaller on the inside than I expected. I'd imagine fall/winter nights here are much more tolerable as even the indoor space gets verryyyy warm! read more
We came by here on a Saturday for an early dinner. The decor of this place is super cool and the ambience is casual. I ordered the chicken biscuit but asked for pimento cheese and jalapeños on it. This was off menu but the server was super accommodating and made it happen. My partner got the fried green tomato sandwich with the jackfruit fries. We both loved our entrees and thought they tasted great. However, I didn't like the jackfruit fries very much. There was too much acidity and sourness in the dish and no fat or spice to balance this out. All in all I highly recommend stopping by for drinks or a quick bite! read more

This place is so cute and different from a ton of the Phoenix style places I've seen. It looks like an old school diner on the outside. Kinda not near a bunch of stuff but the place itself is super cute and good food. They have the cutest outdoor patio with multiple bench & tables and fun seating. The inside is booths and is pretty simplistic but unique decor and murals on the wall. We sat by the bar which was a ton of fun to watch the bartenders make drinks and ask for recommendations while visiting. The food was great, fried chicken 10/5. SO GOOD!!! So juicy and not greasy. Just pure fried yummy hot chicken. We also got the poutine and it was MASSIVE so definitely plan on sharing with 2-4 people. I love this place. read more

Worst customer service and I believe it was because we were from out of town to watch the Dodgers vs Diamondbacks. It was 104 degrees outside and there were no tables available inside. I asked to be seated inside when a table became available. The waiter seemed annoyed I wanted to sit inside after making my order from the outside, but it was so hot outside. He said he would let me know when a table became available but he never did. 3 groups left but he sat other people down that came after us. Got our food and we just ate outside while sweating like crazy. There 7 seven of us and all of the potatoes and fries in all of our orders were extremely salty. We got the chicken steak and it was hard. My daughter got the French toast and the syrup was like water, not natural like it said on the menu. Another large party was seated next to us and waiter came out to check on them and offer them boxes. For us they never came out once after they brought out our food. Don't come here, food is not that great and waiters are rude. If I could I would give them 0 stars o would. And I paid before receiving my food and tipped and wish I hadn't. I should have known not to tip until end of my meal which I wouldn't have since I had an awful experience. read more

What happen to this place!!! We use to love to come here and enjoy the great food. Well we happen to be in the area and decided to come back. What a huge disappointment to say the least. The burgers use to be WAY bigger and much better tasting. The hamburger patty is like a McDonald's patty now. The hurricane was nothing more then juice. Not sure if the ownership has changed but I know the original owner took pride in her fresh grown ingredients. Delicious! Went with three other people with two of us never being here before we did not leave hungry or in satisfied. Friendly staff and there is indoor and outdoor seating available with misters outside. Some shaded areas as well. Plenty of street parking and a small lot at the back of the restaurant. I got the fried green tomato sandwich and upgraded tot he jackfruit fries as a side. The sandwich was delicious and apparently wins best sandwich pretty often. The fries were even better. The fries themselves are this and taste great, but adding the jackfruit and spice to them made them my favorite part of the meal! Within our party we also got the chicken fried steak and those biscuits are perfect. Because of those biscuits I'm trying the biscuits and gravy next time. Also got two different hot dogs. I don't remember which but no complaints on either. If you buy a hot dog you can get a second for $5. These aren't just hot dogs, but more gourmet hot dogs that pile on the toppings. If you can't decide on a side, upgrade to the jackfruit fries OR the Mac and cheese. The Mac was great! Toasted on the top (which is always a plus for me), creamy and cheesy! Welcome Diner has been on my to-eat list for awhile. I've heard good things about it, but never really had an opportunity to drop in for a meal or drinks. My boyfriend used to live literally down the street from the original and current location, so the menu is imprinted on his mind. Nothing has changed since then with the exception of a few new additions. I. Love. This. Neighborhood. It is totally reminiscent of my old stomping grounds in hipster downtown Indy - I could see myself living in this Phoenix hood. Welcome Diner fits in with the area. It wasn't terribly busy the evening he took me there so we were able to grab seats at our choosing. The girl taking window orders was so sweet when he mentioned I'd never been- she shook my hand, introduced herself gave and a warm welcome. He has told me over and again about how awesome the house hurricanes are so we each got one... and second for myself! I figured the jackfruit sandwich would be sufficient for a meal, but it wasn't. I feel if you're paying $10 for a sandwich, there should be more meat & slaw than bread and be dripping in sauce (or some extra on the side). But it wasn't. The flavor was there but the portion size wasn't. So we got poutine which made up for the lacking sandwich. His chorizo meatloaf was delicious. Hopefully another we'll have another dinner date there in the future, those hurricanes have me hooked! read more

A very hip diner you will find along with hospitable service. Welcome Diner is situated in a casual neighborhood. A ton of seating is available in their outside patio, otherwise there are some booths and bar seating inside as well. I did not like how closely some of the booths were lined up though; the very drunk, ratchet girl sitting directly behind me basically kept whipping her long blonde hair at me. :/ Other than that, comfort food seemed to make up most of the menu, some more Vegan friendly. We opted for a version each of their biscuit sandwiches. I had the *Koko Biscuit* which included more lighter ingredients than the *Big Jim* biscuit. The former had arugula and tomatoes along with their very crunchy and juicy fried chicken. The helping of sauce was a chipotle ranch which offered a nice kick to the meal. Biscuit we both felt could have been more fluffy and perhaps milkier in texture; these were a bit too crumbly. I did like the helping of watermelon on the side as a sweet finish to a very hearty meal. I'm a sucker for cornbread so I did also order the *Heirloom Cornbread*. I immediately could taste how Vegan friendly this was; it definitely was missing butter, so the texture was a bit more airy and ultimately dried out. On that note, the butter offered on the side was a sweet addition (literally). I think it was an apple butter of some sort. An eclectic menu and I did love how they sourced their ingredients from local businesses and farms. A worthy spot to visit while in Phoenix! read more
Talk about a hidden gem ! I love how they are up to date on Covid and make sure everyone feels safe, sitting outside is perfect with a bar for some mixed drinks and great food! If you have not been definitely head down and have their KOKO sandwich as well as the fried green tomato ones for you vegetarians out there like me !! Yummm! The cutest, most pleasant diner where you'll surely feel welcome (see what I did there?!) This was our first meal after landing in PHX and it was a great spot at which to start. This isn't one of those dirty, greasy diners that you typically think of, but it's very bright, clean, and airy. You order at the window outside and then seat yourself either outside or indoors (and since it was HOT, we opted for indoors). I got the brass donkey to drink (which is a fruit punch highlife, and honestly reminded me of a summer shandy) which was refreshing and slightly sweet. For food, I chose the mac n cheese, which was delicious! Very cheesy and flavorful. It could've used a bread crumb topping to add some depth to the textures, but I was satisfied nonetheless. One of my friends got one of the chicken biscuits and said it was the best chicken biscuit he's ever had! I'd love to come back someday and try some of their other many dishes. Stopped by for dinner before leaving town. I ordered the Champion Burger because it has bacon jam and I am such a sucker for that! It was pretty good. My husband had a grilled cheese sandwich which had a fun combo of cheddar, muenster and gouda cheeses with smoked tomato. Welcome Diner is apparently pretty famous around downtown, but I hadn't heard of it until my friends dragged me here on a weekend night around 11pm. I think the open from dinner until 2am is a great concept (especially with its proximity to ASU and UA), and I find the menu options interesting. The open seating is fine, but it gets really full really fast. The service was friendly, and parking is street. Hibiscus lemonade: Gorgeous color and amazing tartness. This was super refreshing and not too sweet, which I appreciated. If it were me, I'd have loved a slight more floral flavor from the hibiscus, but I'd have this any hot, sweltering, typical Phoenix summer day. Macaroni and cheese: The "secret blend" looked like a mixture of pale cheeses to me, and the cheesiness was mediocre. I thought the top was toasty and had that nice cheesy crust with the breadcrumbs, but the overall dish just erred on the side of under salted to me. Pulled "pork" fries made with jackfruit and cabbage slaw: These pulled pork fries were pretty good! The sauce was tangy and rich, and I thought the texture was pretty similar to slightly dry pork. It's definitely an interesting alternative to meat, and when paired with the tangy slaw, the combination definitely had a nice kick. The fries were fine, mostly just a starchy vessel for the other ingredients. Cornbread with butter: This was unfortunately pretty disappointing. The cornbread was served in a cute cast iron pan, but it was definitely over cooked and bone dry. I could taste some of the caramely corn flavor, but it was stuck on the bottom of the pan and a pain to get off. The butter was also light in flavor, and I couldn't really distinguish what it was flavored with. Overall a miss for me. I might stop by Welcome Diner again for some late night munchies, but I might try other dishes next time. Maybe the shrimp toast? read more

Came here late night because we heard the fried chicken sandwich was bomb. Alas..it was only alright. In all honesty, I wouldn't go out of my way,our breakthe speed limit to grab a table or stool at the counter. It seems to be a hipster hangout, with no super tasty food to enjoy. Maybe we came on an off night, but my chicken sandwich was..meh. My drink..the lavender something had more ice than anything else. I should have stuck with the glass of water they brought. My friend ordered old fashioneds. At least someone really enjoyed something they ordered. Not my cuppa tea. Don't think I'll be back. read more
Wow, such a cool place! Came here for a late night snack and drink and a late flight. Drink: Manhattan. I would definitely get it again, and would recommend it if you like bourbon. Food: Champion. This is one of the best burgers I've had in a while. Definitely mouth watering even thinking about it haha. Service: Our waitress was super nice and helpful. Our expectations were exceeded with this meal! I started with the Hurricane Cocktail which was a fruity rum based cocktail. It was perfectly balanced, not too sweet which I loved. I had the Koko chicken biscuit. The chicken was fried to perfection, crispy but not oily, and not dry at all. My girlfriend ordered the Steak Frites special which she loved. The Chimichurri sauce was so fresh and tasty. We also tried the pulled pork fries which were served with a hefty portion of tender pulled pork. If we had been in Phoenix 1 more night, we probably would have returned to this spot as the menu has so many good options to try. read more

This place is a hidden gem. We went on a whim and had the poutine, bourbon pecan pie, and peach cobbler. Odd combo, but I had to have the dessert special and wouldn't have been able to finish it if I also order the biscuit on my mind. Wait staff was patient with us, jovial, and overall just fun to chat with. The inside is small so I imagine they can get busy very easily. Great experience all around. read more

It was really good until the undercooked chicken came out. New chef learning the ropes so hopefully this was the only one that slipped by. The spiked lemonade was good. Disheartening experience. The glove box on the bar counter in front of me was unpleasant. read more

There are a select few but they are very rooted in their current options they don't have Dr. Pepper either.

Yes! Lots of seating outside and all dog friendly on the patio. There's a walk up window you can order at from outside

No. But you can get a burger patty on a bed of argula
