I was looking for something new in the area and rolling through Yelp when I came across this cute little diner so I decided let's go have dinner. I found it really whimsical, knowing that this was a place that's really low-key hidden in a neighborhood which made it even more enjoyable. They have inside and outside seating and it really looks like a diner from back in the day with a little hippie touch, we created it right away when we came in and asked where we like to sit and give a menu as well as a happy hour menu. The menu is small, but there's so many delicious choices on there unfortunately, we did not get to try the deviled eggs cause they were out of one of the ingredients so we definitely have to come back but we order the mac & cheese 10 out of 10 with hot sauce. The fries were nicely crispy and slightly over salted from my taste. the chicken biscuit was a 10 out of 10 and my burger was a 10 out of 10 I didn't make a edit to my burger because I don't like bread and butter pickles but they were more than welcome to give me the dill pickles. We didn't know that it was happy hour so we did get some Palomas which were a 20 out of 20 we definitely have to come back and try the eggs and many other menu items. We didn't get any dessert because we were way too full, but it looked very great on pictures. They will be seeing us in the future no doubt.
Found this place while searching the internet for Phoenix's best chicken fried steak. I will say it's definitely one of the best I've had in a while and I really enjoyed eating here. Service was great and the food was even better. They also serve mimosas by the bottle. This place definitely hit the spot for what I was looking for.
I have been a few times in the past but realized they moved and upgraded on my latest visit. Same great retro diner feel with yummy burgers, fries, and sandwiches. Cute for a date night in the downtown area or with family/friends. Service was great and helpful, and our picky eater gives it two thumbs up! We will be back

The Lil Birdy Chicken Biscuit and Brussels Sprouts were part of the Happy Hour menu and were only $5 each, making them an incredible value. The Big Jim was over $14 and was hearty, satisfying, and packed with flavor. At first, we were a little surprised by some of the menu prices, but once we discovered their Happy Hour specials, it made a lot more sense. Happy Hour is available: All Day Tuesday Monday-Thursday from 3 PM-6 PM Friday & Saturday from 10 PM-Close The staff was friendly, attentive, and helped make the experience even better. Overall, Welcome Diner is a family-friendly restaurant with fresh locally sourced food, great accessibility features, a fun atmosphere, and excellent Happy Hour deals. I just ate the best breakfast I've had in Phoenix. I'm not kidding. On a whim I crossed seventh street and found a very hip corner in the Garfield district. I have been wanting to check out the welcome diner and it's a quiet weekend in Phoenix so here we go. First, it was busy; I'm guessing it typically is. We found our favorite bar spot quickly though and got to it. You get a great view of the chefs hard at work when sitting here and the show was awesome. Old school diner meets modern culinary fare (chicken livers are the first thing on the menu) and these gentlemen were putting in the work! Watching them put together chicken fried steak, perfect eggs, the best breakfast potato's I've ever had and more was a treat. It also made for some serious anticipation and I was not disappointed. Best chicken fried steak in town I would bet money on it. Potatoes roasted and seasoned to perfection and a melt in your mouth biscuit served with homemade jam. It was wonderful and surreal simultaneously. Our hostess was charming and greeted us with a huge, infectious smile. Am I coming back?? Silly question. The chef even complimented my hat! A nice reminder that the Welcome Diner, like myself, is LOCAL! Do not miss.
Food was a 10/10 and always keeps me coming back. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We tried the fried chicken sandwhich, Mac and cheese (to die for), and the pancakes for a little sweetness. Service is quick and all the staff is very personable. All this food and drinks for $36 which is a steal. Cute little restaurant and can't wait to come back!
Solid 4. Here's the honest truth. I was a solo diner and sat at the bar. I was approached when my order was taken and when I paid my bill. Service was friendly - just not attentive. I ordered the chicken biscuit and some fries. The taste was good. I would recommend giving wet naps with the meal (like a barbecue place) because my hands were so so sticky with honey. Sitting at the bar gave me a window on the kitchen. Can't say I loved seeing the eggs for deviled eggs had a 2/28 label on the container and it was 3/6. Also - the "Mac" for the Mac and cheese was cooked and came out of a bag. Would return. Probably would order something different.
In a word: amazing. Fantastic food, great service, and killer vibe. Everything we ate was awesome - from the Caesar salad to the fried green tomatoes sandwich to the house made ginger lemonade, all were excellent. Vibe was throwback at 100%. Would definitely recommend! Also great for kids!
I enjoyed the feeling overall, very family friendly. It had a great feel and I liked the theme/vibe. The bathrooms were okay, like the theme but not the cleanest. The hostess and the waiter were amazing. We had the pleasure of talking to a cool gentlemen who was a cool native of Phoenix. I traveled from Tucson and wanted to give this Diner a try. Overall I would give this place a 3/5 stars. Huevos rancheros- disappointed it wasn't the traditional salsa bandera (onion, tomato, Jalepeno) but it was good. Different twist with the rib with eggs. The chips were soggy when I got my food. I liked the red onions, it added a little kick to the food on top of what the food offers to begin with. 6/10 Eggs over medium- not too runny how I like it. Velvety, the eggs weren't burnt crispy and was delightful. Meat was umami, savory and tender. Different than what I expected, had a little kick of spice. Beans were dry and bland. Not very impressed. 3/10 Pancakes were okay. A little dry for my taste but they were fluffy. The syrup with it was tasty. 5/10. I enjoyed this restaurant but I think it was a bit pricey for everything we ordered.
Good food, spoiled by bad service. We have been curious about this place ever since we stopped and talked to the person seating people while we were waiting for our reservation across the street. He mentioned a pickle martini, which I ordered at lunch and was very good. My wife ordered the welcome burger and enjoyed it except for them getting the toppings wrong. Our granddaughter really liked her mac and cheese and there was a generous serving of sliced fruit. And my Jose Burger had just enough spice and was very tasty. That what's the good. So we stopped here for lunch on a Friday about 12:30 with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Our initial server barely said two words to us and we felt like we were an imposition. When we ordered my wife asked did they have Pepsi or Coke products he said we have bottles and cans of everything, so she ordered a Coke. It was Mexican Coke which is fine, but $5, and it wasn't until we noticed other people had cans of regular Coke and realized he did not give us a choice. When we ordered our burgers, again he barely said two words and did not ask us how we wanted them cooked even though the menu says cook to order. When we got them they were very rare, see the picture, which we're okay with although we would have ordered them a little more done. My wife said no onions on hers, and of course there was onions on her berger. Later we were served by a waitress who was much more friendly and we realize was probably just not there yet when we sat down, so the initial waiter didn't really care what we thought since we weren't going to be his customers at the end. So sadly what could have been a very pleasant lunch was spoiled by the initial waiter, even though the food was good we may not be back.
** 1 STAR ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SERVICE. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!** If I could give zero stars for service, I would. My friends and I are five women of color visiting from California, and we decided to stop at Welcome Diner around **8:07 PM** because it looked like a cute spot to grab some food. Unfortunately, what we got was an experience that made us feel anything but welcome. Our server, Antonio had an attitude from the start and acted like doing his job was an inconvenience. The restaurant was NOT busy, so there was absolutely no excuse for how poorly we were treated. We ordered mac and cheese, fried chicken livers, two steak frites, a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and Brussels sprouts. By 8:53 PM, we STILL had not received our food. I politely asked Antonio where our order was, especially since the restaurant closes at 9 PM. Meanwhile, a group of approximately six WHITE men who arrived AFTER us had already received their food. Then a single customer who came in around 8:30 PM also got their food before our table. At that point, we were sitting there watching everyone else eat while wondering what exactly was happening with our order. Then our food finally comes out--and guess what? **THE STEAK FRITES WERE COLD. LITERALLY COLD TO THE TOUCH.** So we waited forever just to receive food that clearly had been sitting somewhere instead of being brought to our table. And again, the restaurant wasn't even busy. I told Antonio the steaks were cold and that I didn't want them. I asked him to take BOTH steaks back and simply remove them from the bill. His response? "You guys want a free steak." No. We wanted the food we ordered to be served properly. I repeated that I didn't want the steaks and just wanted them removed from the bill. His response: "More for us." EXCUSE ME?! literally WTF. After already receiving terrible service, waiting nearly an hour for our food, watching other customers who arrived after us get served first, and then receiving cold food, THAT was his response? That comment was incredibly disrespectful and completely unnecessary. It turned an already terrible experience into an absolutely unacceptable one. And somehow it gets even better: THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS WE ORDERED NEVER EVEN CAME OUT. And as five women of color, sitting there watching groups of other customers who arrived after us receive their food while we continued waiting, the treatment absolutely gave us the impression that something was off. I'm not going to tell anyone else what their intentions were, but i know how the experience made us feel, and it did not feel welcoming. We were visiting from California and were genuinely excited to try this place. Instead, we left feeling disrespected and completely disappointed. Welcome Diner? More like Welcome... if you're willing to tolerate terrible service. Management needs to seriously rethink how customers are being treated and retrain Antonio on basic customer service, professionalism, and how to speak to paying customers. Management itself needs to learn how to properly handle a customer complaint instead of standing by while the situation gets worse. We came for dinner. We got cold food, missing food, an attitude, and disrespect. Never again
My husband and I stopped by during happy hour... loved the atmosphere, service and food. Will definitely return. $1 beer can't beat that. The brussel sprouts were delicious!!!
Absolutely incredible. The service was amazing everyone cares about what they do multiple staff checked on us and made us feel right at home. The food was incredible the sauce was so consistent and had such deep flavor profiles starting off as a beef gravy into a deep dive peppercorn and shallot. The steak was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender. Don't forget to order a biscuit it's almost got a sourdough taste and the jam they made was such an incredible compliment that flirted with deep sweet and tart flavors absolutely worth returning for alone. The small diner feel and the fact that it was nestled in a small family neighborhood made it feel like a true hidden gem. I'll definitely be coming back. As a former server and cook these are the places I love to visit.

Great grub spot! We decided to go here after a search on yelp and recommendation from friends. The vibe is very chill here and the staff are wonderful, along with the good foods and drinks. Situated in a corner spot, surrounded by homes, this place provided the perfect amount of cool chic and hipster vibe. The menu delivers an array of great comfort food with a whimsy flair. Worth checking out if you need a place to escape from the corporate world and enjoy a good meal. Say hi to guys at the grill, if your sitting at the counter. American Diner is all around an amazing restaurant! The customer service was amazing and so was our food. Our food did not take long and it was cooked to order, and fresh. There are desert options readily available. The 60s music vibe was relaxing. The restaurant was full of creative wall art. This restaurant is pet friendly, kid friendly, and family friendly. The history behind the restaurant is appreciated. The dedication towards its employees, and service to their customers is outstanding. I will say this restaurant is very good in the category of good restaurants, the menu is limited so you have a selection of about eight things you can get. However, when you do order, you are surprised because it is very good food. The drinks are abundant. And the food is good portion. One thing that is a draw is that there is a good amount of wait time at any given time of the day, which is good for the restaurant but bad for the patrons.overall I would recommend this place as one of those places you have to try, but you may only try it one time because of the time and limited menu. The ambience is small but quaint, which is fun. read more
11/13/2022-Almost a year ago, we return to the Welcome Diner, this time for dinner. We were not disappointed! Our first time at the Welcome Diner we had brunch. Before we headed back to Yuma, our family decided to eat first. Our dinner choices were--a couple of burgers, a chicken sandwich, and a couple of fish and chips. I attached a copy of the menu (my apologies for the imperfect shots), as well as pictures of our food, for your reference. Delicious, delicious, delicious! Service was quick this time. It also wasn't that crowded at about 6 o'clock in the evening. It was nice to come for dinner, especially because the garden patio was illuminated by festive lights. I just loved the ambiance. Perfect for small groups like friends and families. And wouldn't be too bad of a choice for a nice, romantic dinner without trying too hard to impress. It's very rare for me to return to the same place for a meal. What with the many choices available around town! Having come here twice is a statement by itself. I'm still recommending it, for brunch, or for dinner. read more

My favorite Yelp feature? Bookmarks! Are you using it? When you hear about a place that you must try, go to their Yelp page, hit Bookmark, and you've created your bucket list. The best part about it is how it sorts by distance. So when I'm out and about and want to try something nearby, I go to my bookmarks. And that leads me to Welcome Diner. I don't remember where I heard about it, but I added it as a bookmark, and then when I was nearby, I knew where I was going. #LifeHacks First and foremost, what a cool exterior. This whole place is just special. From the neighborhood to the vibe, this is a gem. Even if you don't decide to eat here, just go look at it. I was so surprised that Phoenix had something so retro hiding in a quiet neighborhood. Being from Albuquerque, it reminded me of a place there called Route 66 Diner, but this is more for the cool kids (wait till you see the staff). What I really liked about the design was that they didn't overdo it. Some retro eateries go overboard with Elvis and Marilyn Monroe cutouts to prove their yesteryear authenticity, but Welcome Diner does not need to do that. It is not overwhelming. Likewise, the outdoor patio is huge and inviting and I liked the help yourself water dispenser. The cocktails are GOOD. We tried the Moscow Mule and Old Fashioned and these were potent and expertly mixed. We refrained from dessert but the pies looked enticing. Service is distant but responsive. Where does Welcome Diner have room for improvement? Unfortunately, when it comes to the lunch/dinner menu, the food. When the so-called Welcome Burger arrived, it was not welcomed. Honestly, a McDonald's burger would be more filling and visually appealing and cheaper than this $10 greasebomb. The BLAT (Bacon Lettuce Avocado Tomato) was slightly better but I made the mistake of not upgrading to the sourdough which would have improved it immensely. The soft baguette was gross. The mac and cheese was unremarkable. Overall, these choices were largely uninspired. Having said that, the breakfast/brunch options look excellent and that is the next daypart I will choose when I come back. Honestly, when you have a location like Welcome Diner (and this is clearly part of the Phoenix tourist trail), they don't have a lot of motivation to improve the menu or culinary skills. I understand that. But just a few tweaks would make the food as excellent as everything else. Bottom line: come for the scene, the drinks, and likely brunch. read more

Late night find that was amazing! Flew into Phoenix, and staying downtown, needed something to eat and found this place about 9pm Friday evening. Super quirky yet inviting little diner that had a very welcoming vibe. We sat inside with wait staff, or there is a walk up window to place your order and sit outside. Ordered and our daughter wanted just a PB & J and the chef fixed her right up. Fast, fresh and delicious dinner followed up with yummy pie. Definitely will make our way there again! I am sure the brunch would be amazing. read more

It has a hipster vibe coming here. The neighborhood seems to have been gentrified too. No reservations accepted unless for groups 6 or more. We went here for brunch. We had the large chicken biscuit, country fried steak with sunny side-up eggs, and French toast. Everything we had was delightful. Service was good at the beginning but I was a little perturbed at being handed a bill before we even finished our meal. I understand they have to turnover, but one of us was not finished eating yet. read more

We walked from Downtown Phoenix and it was worth it! The biscuit, fried chicken & brussels were cooked fresh to order. The fried chicken is cooked in buttermilk. Absolutely delish! It's a cute little old fashioned diner located in the Roosevelt Arts District. We sat outside and it was a perfect setting. The staff is wonderful and very attentive. There is also inside seating. My friend and I arrived in Phoenix early morning so, of course, we were seeking breakfast. I wanted to ensure she had vegan options so we headed here shortly after landing. It's in a neighborhood with just a few other businesses so it was bustling or noisy. Got a parking space right in front which also made life easy. The yard is fun and has outside seating but we opted to dine inside. The hostess/server was nice and helpful and the inside was decorated like a cool throwback diner. We ordered and waited on the food with adult brunch cocktails which were delish. However, the food was just okay for me. My friend actually had more vegan options than me since I was in the mood for a hearty breakfast. I will say the biscuit was good but not enough to make me want to return soon. read more
Great little spot! My friends visiting from DC actually picked this place. They wanted somewhere that server vegan food. Using an app called happy cow that shows vegan spots. Cute little decor. Welcome Diner is one of the best breakfasts in town. We are from San Diego, and this restaurant reminds us so much of our little neighborhood in South Park. Trendy, welcoming, small menu with a big taste. We always bring our out-of-town guests here, and it's a great intro to the Phoenix food scene. There's a private parking lot and always plenty of street parking. Walk-up to order window with plenty of Indoor and Outdoor seating. It took me so long to try this place out that I understand they moved from their original location into this new location. The building itself has a great modern diner vibe and plenty of outdoor seating. There are several booths inside and seats at the counter. I was a fan of the vibe. Three of us sat inside and took our time ordering. It was 5pm on Monday so it wasn't too crowded. Our server was nice and let us take our time after letting us know what the specials were. They have happy hour during the week from 5-7 with a few food and drink specials. The menu isn't too large but has a good mix of offerings. There were several items I wanted to try but I landed on the bumblebee biscuit (fried chicken, honey, beer mustard, pickles). It came with a small side of watermelon. I thought flavor wise it was great and it definitely hit the spot. My girlfriend got a welcome burger and fries and my friend got the champion burger with fries (bacon jam, cheddar, thousand island, tomato, arugula). It's a large portion of food. The fries are crispier which is my preference. They both needed to go boxes. Overall it's a cute spot and a solid menu. I would definitely return, especially when it's a little cooler outside to hang on the patio. read more

After bar hopping downtown this seemed like the ideal last stop. I originally had it on my mind because a FEZ employee recommended it to me and she was right, they've got some good stuff here. I had the "Big Jim" which comes with fried chicken, in-house gravy, bacon, biscuits, cheddar, and sausage. I wanted turkey bacon but they didn't have it so I opted for Andouille instead. They happily made the substitution. I loved it, especially their rich gravy and flakey biscuits. It also comes with a side of watermelon which satisfied my sweet tooth afterwards. My friend ordered the "Mac N Cheese" with brussel sprouts, and she liked hers as well. That one is huge and could easily serve 2. She could only finish 1/3 of it. What we especially loved was the service. We found everyone (particularly Marcus) to be extremely helpful and they anticipated everything we needed despite us coming in one hour before closing. At 1 am on a Friday night it was not packed. There was parking right in front or you can park in the small parking lot in the back of the building. read more

What a nice spot! Outdoor patio is huge and dog friendly. The staff was fast and friendly. We ordered the prickly pear lemonade with vodka. We ordered the French omelette and the chicken fried steak. Hardy portions with nice flavor. The crust was on point for the chicken fried steak even having a light kick. The biscuits were flaky and the potatoes were crispy. The gravy was nice and think and packed with sausage and seasonings. The decor is Eclectic and fun. The music was more on the alternative side but still chill. The prices are reasonable. Best time to come on a Sunday at 1pm. I guess you can it's a welcoming spot! read more

Great local spot! Everything looked delicious but we couldn't turn down the homemade biscuits with fried chicken. They are huge and definitely shareable! The Mac and cheese is definitely a must-try. It's creamy and flavorful plus, they don't overdo it with the bread crumbs. read more
We flew into Phoenix and had some time to kill before our hotel check in. We decided to have lunch, in which Welcome Diner was one of the first places listed. The place is one of those small neighborhood style diners. It's scorching during our visit I'm AZ, so we had lunch inside; they have a pretty large outdoor dining area setup that looked to be a nice options on a cooler day. The service was really good and the wait staff is super attentive. I ordered the No Way Jose hamburger cooked medium rare with a side of fries. The burger came out medium well, but was still pretty good. The beef patty was pretty thick and juicy for being a bit over cooked from what I was expecting; the peppers and the cheese complimented the beef well. The fries came with the meal and was perfectly crispy with a bit seasoning. The dish was served with two cubes of yellow watermelon, which was the perfect way to cleanse the palate when you are done with your meal. They have a few drink options where you can have them sparkling or even spiked for a few dollars more. I chose the regular Hibiscus Limenade, which was quite refreshing given the triple digit weather outside. The only issue I had with the Limenade is that the price charged for it didn't match what was printed on the menu. Prices may have gone up, and it was only a few dollars, but I was expecting what I saw on the menu. In any case, I didn't raise a fuss and we paid through the QR code option. The wait staff printed out a receipt for us without being asked, which was thoughtful. My coworker tried the PBB burger and said it was pretty good. I didn't want to take the risk of having a beef hamburger with peanut better smothered all over it. Overall, the food was pretty good and the wait staff was friendly and attentive, but this visit had a couple of small faults. read more

Is there gluten free options available on the menu?
There are a select few but they are very rooted in their current options they don't have Dr. Pepper either.
Is your patio dog friendly?
Yes! Lots of seating outside and all dog friendly on the patio. There's a walk up window you can order at from outside
Do they have gluten free buns available for burgers?
No. But you can get a burger patty on a bed of argula
It appears this is only an outdoor venue. Is this true?
There is ample seating inside both at tables and a counter. I think the other answers may be outdated.
