This was our go-to Hong Kong style cafe in L.A.. Recently we went there for lunch but the food was not as good as before. We ordered beef chow fun with dark soy sauce and beef stew curry. Beef chow fun with dark soy sauce is the most iconic dish to tell if a Hong Kong cafe is up to standard, while beef stew curry is also iconic as Hong Kong style curry is very unique in taste and mouthfeel. Both dishes were not good. The chow fun was not thoroughly fired, quite wet, and were not well stained with soy sauce. The bean sprouts were cold, which meant they were put onto the dish instead of stir fired together with the other ingredients. The taste was too mild. The beef stew curry was the worst. The taste and mouthfeel of the curry was totally not right, and the beef stew was extremely salty.....How come most of the Hong Kong style cafes in L.A. have gotten worse after the pandemic?! My mom said it's close enough to authentic breakast in Hong Kong. I got the satay beef instant noodles with egg and it comes with either pineapple bun with butter or toast (I got the pineapple bun). For an Asian/Chinese restaurant, I am very surprised at how great the service was! My family have been coming here infrequently for the past couple of years, and we all really enjoy the food here. There's usually not too long of a wait. Being a cross between a full-on chinese restaurant and a cafe, this place serves food very quickly and for very reasonable price. What we like most about this place is that once you order $40 worth of food (JUST FOOD!) when you dine-in, you have the option to pay $2-4 dollars more for another entree (there are 3 options). There are also other Chinese breakfast snacks such as cheung fun or bo lo yau. The only downside about this place is that you have to pay cash, and that it's hard to find parking sometimes. The parking lot is relatively small and you have to be careful where you park since some spots are marked to be only for other stores. Each of the parking space itself is small as well so just be careful when you're driving a van or a fancy car to this restaurant! read more

Haven't been here for a while and all of sudden I missed their baked pork chop rice! It's always flavorful and the top just baked perfectly! Never too burn! Love it! Also we tried two new things, we ordered the salt & pepper chicken wings and lamb pot. Surprisingly the salt & pepper chicken wings were super crispy and tasty! When I drove pass this café, I thought the name was pretty unique. I thought it would be an Internet café since it's named after the texting app, but it's just a Hong Kong café located in El Monte, which doesn't seem to have much of those! My dad was really excited to come here since he had heard from his friend that the food was pretty good, so we came for lunch on President's Day. The place was packed at around 1 PM! The restaurant itself isn't too big and still has the wooden furnishings from the last restaurant (Liangs Kitchen) - there's a small room with two tables and a Karaoke machine and in the bigger dining area, there's probably around ten tables more or less. We weren't greeted when we walked in and nobody came to help us even after a few waiters had seen us standing by the door looking clueless. We waited for about five minutes before somebody finally came to take our name. If my parents hadn't wanted to try this place out so much, I would have just left. We waited for almost 15 minutes before we were seated. A group also came in after we had entered and were seated before us. I was quite disappointed that they didn't have their complimentary borsch soup. Apparently they had just run out and the few tables prior to us had received it, and when we asked the waiter, he said they normally have it but not today ... which was oddly worded since we obviously saw other tables get it. Oh well ... My dad ordered what seems to be WeChat's specialty, the German styled pork knuckle which isn't served in many cafes (I only know of Garden). And it seemed like every table was ordering this same dish! The pork knuckle has a lot of meat and a big huge bone (great for dogs!) and they fry the pork knuckle skin to be crispy and there's a bed of sauerkraut and a few vegetables as well as two slices of potatoes. Overall I thought that was a great dish. There wasn't the weird smell that I usually get from Garden. The price is a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for! My mom ordered ramen in a wooden tin pot. She said it tasted eerily similar to Garden's ramen. Overall it wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't come here for ramen myself. The noodles, soup base, the meat and seaweed all blended well together, but I would honestly go to Shin-Sen-Gumi if I wanted ramen so much. And I ordered the baked pork chop rice. This is pretty much my go-to dish at all Hong Kong cafes. I think if a restaurant can perfect this dish, the other dishes must be pretty good haha. WeChat's pork chop rice is a little small, but the rice is lightly fried with eggs (rather than just using plain white rice) and the pork chops seem to have been fried also before being cut and baked with the rest of the dish. The pork chop and rice were good, but I didn't care for the sauce. I like my tomato sauce more sour-y sweet and WeChat's was too salty for my liking. The dish wasn't bad, but I would say JJ's baked pork chop rice is still my number 1. The drinks were just okay. They cost $1 extra if you order an entrée, and my mom tried the iced lemon tea and my dad had the iced milk tea. Both of them told me that the drinks were just okay, and not worth the extra $1. For me, the lemon iced tea was quite watered down and didn't have enough sweetness to it. Service was better after we had been seated. Ambiance is okay; TVs around the restaurant, a few modern pictures tacked up against the wall, but I feel like they should remodel it to make it look more modern. It's not bad though. I really like it here. The food is quite fulfilling and the prices are very reasonable. This Hong Kong style cafe isn't quite like the others. I like that at least half their menu leans toward Western cuisine. You won't find wonton noodles or congee on their menu but they do very well with the classic chicken steak. My family and I came here for Mother's Day brunch. The service is always efficient and friendly. The most important thing though is the quality of the food. Here's the review: Grilled chicken steak ($8.95, I think--forgot to take the receipt with me): This isn't grilled. It is definitely pan-seared. The skin is always very crispy. The meat is a moist darkmeat section cut into boneless steak. I have had this with a black pepper sauce and a garlic sauce before. Other options include the mushroom sauce and something else I don't recall. The plate comes with perfectly steamed carrots and zucchini pieces and a couple of pieces of scalloped potatoes. You can choose having a plate of steamed white rice or spaghetti with meat with tomato on the size. I don't know why I always order the spaghetti because I really don't like the meat with tomato sauce. In fact, next time, I should just get rice that I can mix with the awesome black pepper or garlic sauce...or just plain spaghetti that I can toss with the sauce. Ramen ($9.50 or so): My mother ordered this with the angus beef. It literally comes in a wooden bucket container. The broth is white in color so perhaps it is miso. The order also comes with half of a seasoned hard oiled egg, seaweed and other things. Baked rice with fish filet and spinach ($10.95): My grandmother ordered this and it was delicious! She's been dealing with some intensive dental issues and for the most part is on a soft food diet. This dish was perfect. I had a taste of it and it was far tastier than j expected. The fish is likely sole. The sauce is a cream sauce that reminds me of cream of mushroom but lighter. The spinach pieces are scant though. The whole thing is topped with some cheese and probably put in a broiler as the top was lightly toasted. I'm going to order this for myself next time. Spicy salt chicken wings ($6.95, I think): These wings were really, really moist and flavorful! I love me a good fried chicken wing that isn't covered in breading. They were crispy on the outside and bursting with juice on the inside. The wings were tossed with a scallion and jalapeño mixture. I'm totally ordering this again next time and might even have it as an entree with a side of rice. Ginger seasoned chicken with scallion and ginger sauce ($1): You read that right. This dish cost $1 and would have been enough to feed an adult. There's a sign in restaurant in Chinese that says if you spend $30, you can have this chicken dish for $1. The cut of chicken is similar to the chicken steak except I think it was steamed. I had just a piece of chicken from this plate. It was tender but not as flavorful as my chicken steak. We brought this home. Drinks with each entree: You can add a lemon iced tea, milk tea or coffee for $1 with the order of each entree. These are refillable. I had the lemon iced tea which was refreshing but just a tad bit sweeter than I like. My grandmother had the iced coffee and she said it was really good. Glass jelly slushy: My mother ordered this drink/dessert. It is black grass jelly with coconut milk and ice. She loved it. I have no idea how much this cost but I'm guessing it is around $3. It is served in a mason jar. I have been there before when there was no parking in the lot and we had to wait for a table. It isn't too big inside so I imagine they can get pretty busy although for our Mother's Day brunch, several booths were still vacant by the time we got up to leave. I prefer eating here over Cafe Spot, Tasty Garden, Garden Cafe and all the other HK-style cafes I've tried throughout the years. Finally had the chance to check this place out for afternoon tea time. Parking is usually limited, which is why I have never gotten a chance to try until now. Upon walking in, the name of the restaurant is written in Chinese on the walls, along with some of the well known cities within Hong Kong. My parents were suggesting this place after having been here. We ordered the Beef Chow Fun, Baked Pork Chop Rice and Satay Beef Instant Noodles. Their afternoon tea includes a drink with the meal and we went with the lemon iced tea, which came with one refill. The lemon iced tea was good and sort of resembles the one from U2 Cafe. The Beef Chow Fun was pretty good and flavorful, but looked and tasted undercooked. It was also very oily as well. The Baked Pork Chop Rice was more on the plain side without much sauce, but I liked how they had the pork chop in slices and the parts that did have enough sauce were pretty good. The Satay Beef Instant Noodles looked as plain as they tasted, but the noodles were soft. The best dish would probably be the Beef Chow Fun (minus the excess oil). Overall, service was okay and the server gave us one refill and apologized a couple of times for bringing out cold milk tea that should have been steaming hot. Try to bring a party of 4 or more here because they offer deals if you spend more than $35 (eg $1 chicken rice, $3 pork knuckle, or $3 lemongrass pork chop). We ordered the chicken rice, the pork knuckle, the lemongrass pork chop, and the Singapore style fried rice noodle. The portions are massive, but you are paying about $1-2 more per dish than other HK cafes. Chicken rice was so tender and they took out the bones. Probably the best place to get chicken rice, besides Savoy in the SGV. The other dishes were solid as well. Lemongrass pork chop was seasoned well; tender and juicy with a unique hint of sweet flavor. And the pork knuckle is delicious; just make sure you eat it as soon as it comes out (it hardens and gets chewy once it cools). My family and I tried most of their menu and you won't be disappointed with any of their dishes.
