Delicious malatang spot!! Took my dad to try malatang for the first time and although it was a very long wait (2 hrs ish), he really enjoyed it! It was a rainy and cold LA day, so I think the entire LA area came to eat some sort of hot soup. Ambiance was really busy and overstimulating tbh, but I guess I had the same idea to eat hot pot during this day so can't really complain. We're from Norcal and we don't really have as many malatang spots as LA. My cousins brought us here to try it. I thought they had good meat options but lacked some vegetable and noodle options (no enoki mushrooms, potato noodles, etc) that I usually add back home in Norcal. Bone broth was really comforting and delicious! I can't handle spice and prefer just a clean and simple broth and this place got it right! My dad got the tom yum soup and I dipped my free shrimp crackers in it and it was so delicious! He really enjoyed all the seafood/meat options and added practically every choice in it lol. He said do NOT add the little blue crabs because theres not much meat in it and it just adds weight to your price hahaha. I was here not that long ago, and came back yesterday, but unfortunately things have already gone downhill. It's pay-by-weight, and I grabbed roughly the same items as usual: my bill used to be $16-$18, and yesterday it came to $26. Same bowl, 40-60% more expensive. The bigger issue was the service. I was seated between two other tables, and both of them ordered a full 15 minutes after me -- yet all three of our orders arrived at the same time. The restaurant uses a robot for food delivery, and it seems they just loaded several orders onto the robot at once to save trips. As a result, my food had clearly been sitting around waiting: it arrived lukewarm, and the noodles had clumped together into a sticky lump. One more thing: they advertise a happy hour deal -- a free drink with any order over $18 -- but the staff never mentioned it when I ordered, so I only found out afterwards. My rating is for the food and not the service (which can use some work). It was my first time here just to celebrate my dad's birthday. You basically go in, choose the ingredients you want in your hot pot and then go to the end where your food will be weighed. You then choose a flavor for your soup, they hand you a number, and then you sit down and wait for your food. I got the Tom yum soup which was great - very tasty. My bowl came out to be about $17 and I was pretty full from it. After you finish eating, they give you a soft served ice cream (black sesame) which was so yummy! Anyway for the experience / service - Since it was my first time, the worker had to explain the process to me but she was sooo soft spoken, I can barely hear her so I just figured it out myself. We did bring cake to the restaurant and maybe it's not a traditional place to celebrate? But they were nice enough to help us store the cake in the fridge. However, when they brought it out for us, I guess I thought they would offer forks or a small bowl or plate for the cake. None of that was offered. We had to flag down someone and asked but the guy only gave us forks so we just looked at each other. And ended up grabbing the sauce bowls as our plates. My dad also some restrictions with biting large pieces of food so we asked for scissors and they did not have any. We ended up going next door to Daiso to buy a pair of scissors. Overall, this place is not extremely accommodating for these extra requests but the food is good. The concept is pretty efficient - you select your raw ingredients that are placed cafeteria-style, then choose your broth of choice upon payment. As lots of other Yelpers have indicated, there IS a way to "cheat" the system by prioritizing meats and veg over heavier carbs. On the day we went, I was a little disappointed that the restaurant was out of their miso broth, but the bone broth was surprisingly very umami. I've seen from the ranges of $15 to all the way up in the $40 range. As for ingredients, it's pretty much got all the usual hotpot foods selections you can think of. Many places have limited fish ball options but not this one, so choose what you like. The options are practically endless in my opinion including noodles. Very happy with the wide variety of selections. Parking here is in a underground parking lot, very spacious and plenty of spots. Can get packed so watch out for that. This specific restaurant can get very busy. From ranges of 20 minutes waiting time to an hour+. Make sure to join the waitlist on Yelp or in person to avoid wait times. Broths are plentiful as well, spice levels are plenty. My favorite turns out to be the Collagen and the Tomato broth. I believe the flavoring of both broths fits very well with the ingredients I get. However, it's not anything too special compared to other same style hotpot restaurants. The Worst Management Experience Ever! I have been a loyal customer of Big Way Hot Pot since it first opened, but honestly, this experience has made me extremely disappointed. The management is absolutely unacceptable. Previously, I visited on days when the restaurant was unbearably hot. I brought this issue to the employees' attention, but nothing changed. I tried to be understanding and patient, even though it made the dining experience uncomfortable. Then came Wednesday and Thursday this week, when it was raining--perfect weather for hot pot. I expected a good meal, but instead, I experienced another frustrating situation. Despite the restaurant being busy, there were only FOUR employees working. The waitlist was ridiculously long, and I had to wait about an hour just to get a table. The service was painfully slow, and after finishing my meal, I had to wait another HALF AN HOUR just to get my bill. Seriously? Waiting 30 minutes just to pay is ridiculous! I tried to understand the situation because I knew the restaurant was busy that day. But then I came back on Thursday, when it was raining again, and guess what? EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. Only four employees, extremely slow service, and stressed-out staff running around trying to handle everything. Honestly, I felt bad for the employees because they were clearly overwhelmed. They were trying to do their jobs, but how can anyone provide decent service when the restaurant is so obviously understaffed? MY BIGGEST QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE MANAGEMENT DOING? How can management repeatedly allow this to happen? If you know rainy days bring more customers, why aren't you scheduling enough employees? Why are your employees being put under so much pressure? And why do loyal customers have to suffer because of poor staffing and planning? A restaurant cannot run properly if management fails to prepare for busy days. This is not the employees' fault. They looked stressed and overworked, and management needs to take responsibility instead of leaving them to deal with the chaos. As someone who has supported this restaurant since it opened, I am beyond disappointed. Loyal customers deserve better, and employees deserve better working conditions. Sometimes, the estimated wait time is inaccurate since it really depends on how fast/slow the previous table eats. The 30 minute wait time for us was pretty accurate and when we got there, our table was ready for us! I will say that the service is definitely on the slower side. There's quite a few people that work in the kitchen and service bar but when it comes to trying to find someone to get water refills or grabbing the check, there was no one to be found. I did notice that there was only one girl that was working the tables and you can tell that she was really overwhelmed since there's ~15 tables and she was the only one on the floor. The base price is 36.99 per kg so don't be too heavy handed! After you grab everything, you place your bowl on top of a scale and choose your soup base. I opted for the signature soup base in mild and I'm 100% sure they gave me hot because wow I was blowing my nose every few seconds and taking heavy sips of water. They also have a sauce bar where you can make your own custom sauce like what a regular hot pot place offers! My favorite combo is satay bbq sauce, sesame oil, sesame peanut sauce, and garlic!
