You absolutely get what you pay for and then some at this WeCafe. I don't understand the name but let's Chat about the food! Man that barbecue pork rice and the Thai basil minced pork was fire! I enjoyed every bite of both. The service was meh but that's exactly what I expected when I stepped into this restaurant. It's true to culture. When I say this is an authentic Chinese restaurant, I mean authentic. They still using plastic water cup. Which is not a dig. But also wouldn't be too bad if they upgraded a little bit to modern times? As far as their food goes, I saw that they had a little lunch special from my Facebook group that I am in- so I decided to stop by. Definitely did not disappoint. A fresh crispy fried egg on top of both dishes? 10/10. We didn't get to finish both dishes because the portion was big, and when we took it home and reheated it? It was even better. I came here since it is open pretty late on a weekday. They sat us in the back and was pretty standard. A fly kept flying around which was a bit annoying but nothing too out of the norm. So food is on the pricier side for HK style type food IMO, a porridge went for $12 while a wonton soup went for like $14. I will say though the food tasted very good, solid 5 at least for what I ordered. Service was totally lacking at night especially since the servers started to eat around 9 pm so it took us awhile to get extra bowls. Overall come for the food, not the experience. Hidden Gem Hong Kong Style Cafe! Discovered WeChat Cafe during COVID and loved their baked pork chop. I finally remembered to come back to try this place in person last week and came again this week! While this place offers a very similar menu as all the HK cafes in the area, the food is much more flavorful than other cafes I've been to. Everything is seasoned well, the beef stew curry was tender, the pork chop was very flavored with the lemongrass and well seared, etc. The prices are reasonable, not exactly cheap, but they give huge portions. I grew up eating at HK cafes in the SGV my entire life and this is one of the first times I've felt impressed. I haven't been to Hong Kong yet but I brought my dad here and he was also impressed and said that it tastes much more authentic than other places. The food took about 15-20 minutes to come out which seems a little slow but practice having patience! Like most other Asian restaurants, the employees here are not going to check in on you. I see a lot of reviews complaining about the service in Asian restaurants and I hate to see people docking off stars because of it. "Good" service is not a priority to people in different cultures, this doesn't mean they're rude. Our servers on both occasions answered our questions kindly, made recommendations, and were happy to help. Ordered directly from their website. Was charged on my card but did not receive a confirmation email. Due to the charge still going through, I went inside and asked the woman at the front if my order was in their system or if they received it. I also explained to her that I was aware it wouldn't be ready, as I had just placed it. I just wanted confirmation the order was received as I didn't receive an email. Alan is awesome host, he goes and talk to customers at each table. We talked and got to know where we grew up in HK. A lot of these old school Hong Kong cafes have been disappearing throughout the 626. My go to spot was Boston Cafe and it closed down a few years ago. I stopped by WeChat Cafe on a whim because it was close by and boy was I not disappointed. They got your basic HK Cafe foods like baked pastas and grilled chicken steaks but the thing they got me excited about was the lemon iced tea that the typical HK Cafes would have. I love Hong Kong food, so I knew I have to try this place. I ordered through Uber eats, and got the baked chicken steak with curry, peanut butter and condensed milk toast and coffee milk tea. I honestly thought that all of them were mediocre. The baked chicken steak rice had a strong curry taste, but the flavor got really heavy after a few bites so it was quite hard to finish. For the toast, I was expecting it to be another form of toast so it was quite disappointing. The drink was not bad, I could taste both the coffee and the milk tea. Came here on a Friday morning at 10:18am, they were not open yet, they waved from the inside of the locked door. On the door the earliest open time printed was 11am on almost all days that I can recall, but on Yelp it said they opened at 8am on all days. I am happy with this place as they have never canceled my order 30 minutes after receiving it like some restaurants (which is excellent as I work from home and I don't have to rush to order something else while I am working.) Baked chicken steak with sauce, baked fish filet, fish porridge, preserved egg porridge, toast with peanut butter and condensed milk are always my favorite go tos. The packaging is great, as everything always comes piping hot. I had one delivery order come 45 minutes late due to the train being stuck, and it still burned the roof of my mouth when I ate it lol. We had to go to WeChat Cafe, especially after using WeChat all day at the Asian American Expo. There's plenty of parking, though it does look a bit sketch, especially in the dark, but we had no issues at all. Outside, there's patio seating under some tents and of course, there's inside seating as well. Inside, there's some signs with what I believe to be big, famous cities in Hong Kong. They speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English here. Though I found it super amusing that when my boyfriend ordered in Mandarin he got hot water and when I ordered in English, I got iced water. Haha, might be a cultural thing. All the prices of everything in their menu seem to have increased , just an FYI. We got the: 1) Horlick: -I was curious to try this out since it's a staple that lots of my Cantonese friends enjoy. -It's a mixed malt drink and it came out in a huge glass. Super sweet and milky and even after letting it dilute a bit it was still sweet and yummy. -I don't think I'd pay for it again since you can find the powder in stores just like Milo and Ovaltine, but for sure, very yummy. 2) Toast with Peanut Butter and Condensed Milk: -I actually ordered the regular toast with condensed milk and butter, but I suppose they heard me wrong, but no matter! This dish was SUPER DELICIOUS. -I was closing my eyes and my taste buds were teleported into heaven. -It comes with large pat of butter on the top and it's fried with lots of egg batter all over. Loved the crispy edges. -With the sweetness of the condensed milk, the slight saltiness of the butter, and the creamy peanut butter, it was DIVINE. -Immediately started Googling recipes on how to make it at home (fingers crossed that I can replicate this) 3) Baked Mince Beef with Cheese: -You get an option for rice or spaghetti with this and I got the spaghetti. -Simple, delicious dish. We inhaled this since we were so hungry. -Lots of cheese baked on top and came with a good amount of minced beef. -Moist, well seasoned, and flavorful. The spaghetti noodles soaked in the sauce very well. 4) German Style Pork Knuckle: -You get the option of rice or spaghetti and we also chose spaghetti. -There also the choice of sauce: black pepper, mushroom, or garlic sauce. We got the black pepper sauce. -This also came with a side of sweet chili sauce and some veggies. -It's a MASSIVE amount of meat. The skin for the pork knuckle was very crispy and crunchy, similar to lechon. Meat was moist and flavorful. Some parts were a bit chewier than my preference, but to be fair, it is from the knuckles.
