Disgusting the place was filled with dozens of flies! You could hear them zapping the flies in the kitchen with the electric fly swatter and the dining room too! As we were eating the infection would continuously be fly into you or your food! It was unbearable! I understand when you there might be a fly or two that might enter when a customer leaves the door open, but there is not reason for there to be well over 20-30 flies in the restaurant. read more

NO WAY - They now charge $2 for a basic hot drink (coffee, milk tea, lemon tea) for breakfast. They are the only one out of all HK style cafes out there that does this. They must be out of their mind (free hot drink with breakfast has been an unwritten rule; most places charge $2 for basic COLD drink but no place charges for basic hot drink). In addition, they increased the prices by A LOT. I know all other restaurants also increased their prices recently but Wechat Cafe's price adjustment is too much. For example their pork chop with eggs breakfast (香煎豬扒配雙蛋) is now a whopping $13 (it can be had with no more than $10 including a basic hot drink at almost all other HK style cafes). If you want a drink too, you pay a price of $15. This is ridiculous. I will never come back again. read more

They take credit card! As we walked in we wondered if they took credit card or not since it's a small cafe but we sat down anyways. We saw the sign on the cabinet and it said cash only but were seated so we were sort of in a rut. We then decided to leave and told the man who seated us that we didn't have cash, that's when he proceeded to tell us that that sign was just a joke. Haha, they got us good. We ate a family style meal, ordered some sweet and sour fish, cauliflower meat, pork knuckles and another beef dish. Pretty good portions for decent prices. This place is located in a older plaza next to auto shops. Food was not spectacular. Most items were too salty. Portion was not big. Not worth the cost. There were a few annoying flies inside that just wouldn't leave our food alone. I would not recommend. read more

I used to like this place a lot for few reasons. Their food used to be tasty and fresh. It was also traditional Hong Kong flavor. Their customer service used to be good too. But then in the past few months, things have gone downhill. Couple months ago, I ordered their red bean drink. The signature drink in Hong Kong. That was a hot day. I immediately drank it after receiving it from the cafe. The red beans tasted sour, more like they were spoiled after staying in hot weather. On that day, the customer service was good. I thought this food turning spoiled incident maybe just an isolation. Then several weeks ago, I went there to dine in. It was a weekend. The cafe was full inside. I had to eat outside in their canopy. The young male server was very very rude. He looked stressed over the constant ordering from customers. I got it, but why yelled at me? I was just telling him I will stay outside in their canopy. It took them 45 minutes to bring me the wonton noodles. And turned out the meat was spoiled too. With the repeated incidents of spoiled food and poor customer service, I will not return to this cafe. read more

My Mom insisted that there was this AMAZINGGGG place for Pork Knuckle. But as we drove deeper and deeper into El Monte, the skepticism grew. Fortunately we walked into WeChat, which shares a parking lot with the fast food place. And it was completely empty inside. But hey - the place had decent Yelp reviews so we decided to stay! We ordered the Baked Spaghetti, Pork Knuckle, Indonesian Fried Rice, and some stir-fried veggies. The Baked Spaghetti was pretty mediocre. I was a bit disappointed by how little meat sauce there actually was - the ratio was just so off and we ended up eating mainly congealed, oily cheese with our spaghetti noodles. The fried rice was what every review raved about, but again - pretty standard. It was slightly spicy, but nothing too memorable. The Pork Knuckle is where it's all at! The meat is super juicy and tender - seriously falls apart in your mouth (in a good way)! And the skin is wonderfully crispy and crunchy! Portion sizes are also super generous so as much as we liked the dish, we actually weren't even able to finish it! Overall, it was a decent meal with mainly misses but the Pork Knuckle was a surprisingly decent hit! By the time we left, somehow all the tables were filled already. We ordered a handmade beef ball noodle soup, very yummy. I am a Hongkongese so I can tell the smell and taste is very authentic Hong Kong style. German Style Pork Knuckle also taste good. Their food has perfect level of salty to me and no msg. Suggest you order those dishes they posted on the wall instead of on their menu which should be their specialty. New ownership over a year upgraded the food and service! The owner is super nice and care their customers eat healthy, and love to see us enjoy the food. He even offer us the famous pineapple bun for free. We are going to try their breakfast and other specialty dishes he recommended next time. What can I say, this Cafe truly has the worst customer service but I can't blame them since they're a Chinese spot. I came here for their afternoon tea (happy hour) and I ordered their baked pork chop with rice. The dish itself was decent but the sauce was too watery and not enough tomato paste. With each meal you order, you receive a drink, which I got the iced lemon tea. You also get one free refill and when I asked for it, it took the workers 15 minutes to give it back to me; I had to remind them! As I'm sitting here, there's one worker in the back booth making dumplings, one at the cashier counting money and the other "server" is busy talking to the guy making dumplings. Its Chinese name (九龍冰室) has no connection to its English name, the latter being a Chinese messaging app. The restaurant was modeled to resemble a "冰室", or tea shop serving Chinese comfort food. Wooden bench seating is WeChat's attempt to replicate the setting of Hong Kong's original style tea shops from the 70's and 80's. The food at WeChat is Chinese fusion with heavy Western influences. Chef specialties included grilled sole fillet with shrimp, smoked salmon with herring roe fried rice, grilled New Zealand lamb chops, and German style pork knuckle, which is not Cantonese food. You won't find soup noodles or many wok/small fry dishes on the menu. WeChat fits into the "Hong Kong-style western fusion" category with thoughtful presentation that is trendy in the "80's and 90's after" generation. Positives: 1. Restaurant is family-owned, probably explaining why it closes before midnight. 2. Servers greeted and spoke exclusively in Cantonese. Very HK-feel. 3. Service was friendly and prompt, the exact opposite of a typical cha chaan teng. Servers are likely in their 20's, full of energy. 4. As of December 2013, prices are competitive to local HK-Western cafes, although the menus are very different. Baked pork chop rice, a popular HK-Western dish in the US, was prepared in a similar style as those found in HK fast-food canteens. 6. The dishes I ordered were cooked light and not too greasy. 7. I know everything is getting very expensive. I do not mind paying top dollar for the baked pork chop rice but when you are charging over $12 for an order, at least, you should give decent food. The portion is way too small. The pork chop is previously fried and when order came in, re-fried again and that makes the pork chop really dry. So dry that I can barely swallow. Wechat is a popular social media app in China and among Chinese. So the restaurant have a name wechat is very unusual. The restaurant serve Cantonese food and HK style. The selection is limited and the quality is mediocre at best. I been here number of times, it seem the quality and service is worst each time... I try numbers of item here, portion size isn't that big. The food are hit and miss and there seem to be more miss than hits.. The most standout food is the woodcase ramen or udon. It look nice and pricey not bad. But the broth is way too salty... The lamb chop was dry and actually one of the least tasty lamb chop I ever had or remember.. Their cofee and lemon drink is $1 and is refillable. They had TV showing sport game most of the time. WeChat (another relatively new place with a lame name) has only been open for a couple of months and at this point it's got a four star rating, probably propped up by all the fives it received early. I should have trusted my instincts as soon as we pulled into the parking lot on a weeknight. There are only a handful of cars in front of the cafe and all the surrounding businesses are closed for the evening and it feels deserted and sketchy. We could have went to R2 Ray Ray's down the street which at least looked more inviting... I don't know what was at this location before but remnants of a drive-thru remain. This borderline dive HITW is lined with booths on two sides and rectangular wooden tables in the center of a kitschy decorated but otherwise coldly stark room. There seems to be a mixed hodgepodge of lighting as there are ceiling recesses lined with psychedelic color changing led strings, alongside old style fluorescent tubed ceiling fixtures, and recessed can lights over the booths. The large windows wrapping around the dining area are etched with graffiti and only seem more pronounced at night. The three tv's overlooking the dining area were set to the NBA channel and muted while there was Cantonese background music playing over the in house speakers... The service was apathetic, that is unless they know you. HK Canto is the primary tongue spoken to you but I'm sure they understand English just fine. One of waiters was chatting it up with the party in the adjacent booth all night, being attentive and offering them tea and refills, whereas we had to order hot tea (which incidentally we had to PAY for) and was never offered a refill. We had to flag them down when it was time to order and also when we wanted the bill. They only cleared away our dishes once just before they brought out the complementary dessert which turned out to be just the custard portion of an unfinished creme brulee without the caramelized sugar layer... I ordered a Baked Pork Chop Rice dish and it was fine. It was a boneless breaded cutlet sliced and incorporated with a creamy, almost ketchupy sweet, baked tomato and cheese sauce over a bed of rice in a casserole. The portion size was generous enough to share, but not as nicely presented IMO as say a Sunday Cafe, just simple and typical. My wife was less enamored with her WeChat Pork Rib in (sic) Hong Kong Style served with steamed rice, which seemed like an over-glorified sweet and sour pork dish. It was very sweet from the canned pineapples and needed the rice. We were also each served a complementary bowl of soup, a tomato broth with cabbage; she said she scored a tiny bit of undefined meat in hers while was graced with a tiny bit of potato. A touch on the oily and salty side suggesting a little heavy-handedness in the kitchen as some reviewers have mentioned... Unless you're an NBA fan I can't see why you would come here. My first and last impression is that they don't offer anything greater than other places that I've been. After reading some yelp reviews and looking at the photos, we decided to give this place a try. Verdict: this place was a disappointment. We ordered the curry beef stew and baked pork chop rice. What we received was a plate of curry sauce with only a few small pieces of beef inside. What a rip off for just under $10. The curry sauce was quite tasty but definitely not worth it. The baked pork chop rice was also a let down as the size of the dish was so small. I don't know if there was even one bowl of rice at the bottom of the dish. Cute HK style cafe that seemed promising, but unfortunately many details fell short... First off, the decor was super cute with HK mtr signs everywhere. The service was great, there was an older gentleman (probably the owner), that was very attentive. Food on the other hand was mediocre. We ordered the: +Pineapple bun with butter (bor lor yau), probably the worst thing i have eaten...It was sooo dry and tasteless. +The raved about pork chop fried rice was good, pork flavored well and sauce on top was hot. However the fried rice in the bottom was cold and dry. +Seafood baked rice (or spaghetti ), a milky tasteless sauce with seafood" which was mainly frozen squid to be honest... +Spicy pepper wings. Avoid this place. They did a total bait and switch on me. Called in for a to-go order. When I asked the man on the phone if they still have their "WeChat Cafe All Day Special" menu that I saw here in yelp, he was confused at first, then later said "oh yeah we do!" So I proceeded to order 4 items, 2 from the special menu. When I went to pick up the order, each of the 4 items were at least $3-$4 more than you see here on yelp. When I questioned the prices of the special menu items, he said "oh right.. we need to update the prices on the web (meaning yelp probably)." They basically don't have that daily special menu anymore. What he should've done was told me over the phone that they still have the items that were on that special menu, but prices will be different. Instead he left that out because he was desperate for business. The food is okay but they definitely do not justify the prices, not to mention their portions are tiny. Long story short, skip this place and go to another HK style cafe for similar food at lower prices. read more

I'm beyond ecstatic they made a Hong Kong style cafe near my house in el Monte.=) I don't have to drive far now to get Good food now. The other local places are good but I get a overwhelming guilt from to heavy processed food after I'm done. We ordered German pork knuckle and Thai style ribs. It was purely Devine with the right amount of flavors to the well done presentation. The ingredients are fresh and unlike the regular cafes. It's not plain mash potatoes but the scallop potatoes and fresh vegetables cooked to perfection. Time and quality is dedicated to each dish. I'm excited to explore the menu without fear. The passion fruit tea was so so good. I'm not a fan of passion fruit teas at all. Most are too sweet or artificial which never captures me enough to want to order it. Lol I just took my guys drink. I believe I had the Singapore coffee? It was good but didn't sweep me off my feet like the tea did. The service alone is more then 5 stars. Most, if not all the cafes are rude, not attentive and just plain bad. We usually go since it convenient and open late but not anymore. Mom discovered this place on a newspaper ad and wanted to try it so yesterday before picking up my niece we came here to have lunch. It was Friday and the place was pretty slow...the first thing I noticed after looking at the menu was wow it is definitely a lot more expensive here than other cafes in the area - It was at least $2-3 more for the same dish - say Chicken Steak at Garden Cafe or Ledo Cafe or KT cafe is like $6.95 - $7.95 well here it was $10.95...so definitely there is a huge price difference. We only ordered two dishes - the Beef Chow Fun with Soy Sauce and the Indonesian Fried Rice - plus an iced coffee and lemon iced tea - bill was about $21...so about 9 dollars per dish and a buck for each drink. To me that was pretty expensive since the portions weren't like super huge and I could have gotten the same thing at another cafe for cheaper. The food was pretty good though. My iced coffee tasted a little weird though. The waiters were very nice and welcoming. Greeted us when we went in and thanked us when we left. The location of this place though is kind of out of the way for us to go to...it wasn't near a whole lot - like markets or plazas...it seems to be kind of isolated even though it was on Valley Blvd. Overall I liked the service, the food was pretty good but probably just the prices wasn't very appealing since it's definitely not very cheap. read more

I came here with my parents today for the first time thinking it would just be another Hong Kong style cafe in California. However, much to my surprise, the workers were really friendly, helpful, and polite. The food was also very good with great quality. They waiter came to our table and asked if this was our first time dining here and how did we hear about it. My dad said that he watched a commercial on the Cantonese TVB channel. He recognized the waiter because he was actually in that commercial which was pretty interesting. Since it was our first time, the waiter explained and gave great suggestions of what to order on the menu. We wanted to order rice and pasta and he gave very great suggestions. They suggested the salmon and fish roe fried rice, which we ordered. It was amazing since I've never had any similar dishes to that. The restaurant had unique items on the menu many other places do not serve. The salmon comes in small cubed shapes and it was tasty and not dry at all. Overall, the fried rice tasted great and went well with the fish roe. We also ordered the baked pork chop with pasta, which the waiter also suggested. You can either choose it with rice or pasta. This dish was also great since the portions of pork chop was very generous. The meat was not full of fat like how some places serve it. It wasn't overly oily so it was just perfect. The pork chop was still crispy after being covered in the pasta sauce which meant it was very freshly made to order. The waiter also suggested a couple more items on the menu that I would definitely try next time. He praised highly of the lamb chops so this is something that I want to order next time. The table next to us ordered a pan sizzled pork chop and a steak which looked amazing. I'm not sure how great the Japanese ramen would be at a Hong Kong style restaurant (and plus the waiter didn't suggest it) but I've seen people's pictures and it comes in a cute little wooden bucket-looking bowl. Lastly, they give you free tomato soup in the beginning of the meal and they end it with a free egg custard creme brulee. Both were great and all the waiters were very attentive and polite Locattion wise, it is in a random plaza next to some auto shops. I would say it is a bad location and I wouldn't have known about this place if it wasn't for my parents hearing about it. I guess the commercials do help though for those who watch the Cantonese TV channel. The amount of people that came here wasn't bad but if it was in a better location, I think they would have more customers coming. Also, I tend to want this type of food late at night after going out or something. Hubby and I came to WeChat because of its Chinese name 九龍冰室. There is a restaurant that had the same Chinese name in Irvine, but it is definitely not related. This one is so much better. The servers in this restaurant spoke Cantonese! So it made you felt like 'back in Hong Kong'. We had the baked pork chop over rice and it almost tasted like the one in Hong Kong, just missing pieces of tomato, but the taste brings back childhood memory in Hong Kong. Milk tea and lemon tea are with unlimited refills and very tasty. My only concern was cleanliness because there were flies inside the restaurant and the bathrooms were not clean. One of the better cafes in the SGV in my opinion and also one that's hidden. I don't think a lot of people know about this cafe located in El Monte. Been here a couple of times and never had to wait long. Service was good and the staff here are very nice. Cafe is a good representation of how Hong Kong cafes usually are not because of the staff but the food as well. Ordered their Baked Chicken with Spaghetti and plenty of tomato flavor. It kept me wanting for more though I was full. Milk tea and iced lemon tea tasted like authentic Hong Kong style drinks. Prices are decently priced for everything on their menu. Wasn't too expensive but comparable to other cafes. There are additional parking in the back. When first coming here, it looks like there are only about 6 spaces up front but check the back for more spaces. If you want to try a new cafe spot, this is the place to go. read more

What i like about theirs is that they had diced tomato and carrots in this dish. Most places just have minced pork and tomato sauce, you're lucky if you see some tomato skins. But WeChat has actual tomato and carrot chunks! It adds a touch of freshness and make it less meaty, so i really liked it! Baked porkchop rice (3/5) it's not bad. The pork chop is pretty good when it's hot, but then when it got cold, the pork chop is very chewy and dry. but the sauce is good. Only had carrot diced carrots, not tomato haha. Seafood pasta (4/5) served with 2 slices of garlic toast. YUM~ There's so much seafood in this dish it's quite surprising. 2 shrimp, 1 mussel, a bunch of baby scallops, some fish, and some snow mushrooms. They are all really fresh as well. Good but nothing special. - Baked Chicken over Fried Rice - $7.95 - Tomato sauce was surprisingly good, Chicken was very juicy and the skin was still pretty crispy even with the sauce over it. The fried rice was not good, I think I would have perfered plain white rice. There was no free creme brule at the end incase that is what makes you want to come here. Came here with the family tonight. The staff were very accommodating especially since my family couldn't really make up their mind on what they'd like and my uncle misunderstood some of the specials deals available. Decor-- I'm confused by it. The name "wechat" cafe makes it sound like a hip place for people to hang and connect. However, there are HK street signs all over and It's neither a family restaurant or a comfy tea house. They seem to have more families tho, maybe it's bcus I went during dinner time. Food-- I didn't have high hopes walking in due to the extensive menu that spans from Chinese to German to Japanese foods. We ordered a variety: baked pork chops with marinara sauce over rice, curry chicken, lemongrass pork chops, German pork knuckle, and beef stir fried udon. I'm surprised by how well the proteins were cooked. I didn't try any meat that was over done. The udon has a great chewy texture to it. We very much enjoyed the lemongrass pork chop. Overall, nothing special but it was satisfying! As for drinks, we all ordered milk teas and my husband tried their passion fruit ice tea. I thought the milk tea was pretty on point! I love this place! I think the food is amazing and I sure can't complain about the price. I work right by here and my coworker had told me about it. We went one day for lunch and I had the Baked Pork Chop with Tomato Sauce and it was delicious! The service was really good. The servers were really attentive and nice. I expected more from this place upon entering but was disappointed in the end. Our table ordered six different dishes and only two of them were worth getting. The sand chicken and the Indonesian fried rice were the only ones we liked. The filet mignon rice was just OK. I guess you just have to know what's good here and not diverge or you'll be disappointed. The sand chicken was the only dish on the chefs special menu that was good. It is dark meat chicken similar to Hainan chicken but you don't get the special rice. Dipping sauce is similar, with ginger and green onions. Indonesian fried rice was very flavorful! Definitely recommended. DO NOT get the Japanese wood case ramen, the Japanese wood case cubed pork with rice, or the baked pork chop. Personally I would never get ramen at a place that does not specialize in it but someone in our party wanted ramen. Tasted super funky! The cubed pork with rice had mushrooms in the picture on the menu but there were no mushrooms in my dish! Only tofu, corn, pork, egg, and a whole lot of rice. Lots and lots of rice! Totally not worth it and did not finish it. Another disappointment was the baked pork chop. I did not try it but everyone else that did said the sauce was not good at all and did not finish it. Lemon tea, milk tea for $1! Free refills but to-go cups are 50 cents. Service isn't that great but not too awful.
