The delivery took ~45min as expected (I'm .3 miles away, per seamless). The fish was fresh and tasty - 7pc sushi and one spicy tuna roll. Miso soup was small but great. No complaints on taste. The amount of food was fine but not super generous. But the delivery was TERRIBLE (see pics). It was in a cardboard box, which is in no way an improvement on plastic. If they're concerned for the environment, they should buy the fancy plastic containers you can reuse. This was a hassle to eat out of. Everything was jumbled together, the lemon got all over the fish... I didn't want ceviche... :-/ So overall, this is a terrible delivery value, but likely good in the restaurant. read more

The sashimi was very good for the value (including yellowtail, tuna, salmon, scallop, ikura, crab, striped bass) and the uni (add $7) was quite good for that price. I was actually impressed with the "spicy tuna" roll, which was made with thick strips of tuna instead of the typical completely ground up tuna, obviously showcasing a higher quality than the usual. The interior needs a spruce-up and our waitress could have been more friendly/talkative, but Wasan is definitely not a bad place for Japanese food if you're in the neighborhood and want to spend around $20-30 pp for a good meal. read more

I am truly blown away by Wasan Brooklyn. As an Asian-cuisine enthusiast, I can never decide if I want noodles, sushi, or ramen. The atmosphere is definitely more casual here, so do not feel like you need to dress up. Our waitress was extremely nice, and even provided us with a choice of cups when we ordered our hot sake. She was witty, funny, and most of all, attentive. When I asked for moderations to make a dishes vegan, and she happily did so, or asked the chef for recommendations to make my selection easy on everyone. Wasan is a favorite. Their lunch bento offers such a lovely variety of sides and entrees, each of exceptional quality. Their sushi and ramen are a cut above the typical fare. I often judge the quality (and authenticity) of a japanese restaurant based on their offerings. Wasan happens to have my favorite (Ume-shiso maki) and they offer it as a side. Speaking of which, their sides are so good! Once you've had their karaage chicken (boneless japanese fried chicken), you'll want it again and again with a cold Sapporo! I like to sit at the bar, because it's not a Sushi Bar, so you don't feel like you are being judged when you eat. It's minimalist, and not Gimmicky. My favorite dish has to be the Uni Lover. It is the Freshest Uni, on rice toast, with Avocado, and a Peanut sauce. It is HEAVEN! I also love the Yellowtail Sushi. The quality is so much better than other restaurants I have tried. How can a "Michelin-recommended" restaurant serve spoiled uni? As someone who loves all varieties of uni, I couldn't believe what we were served. It legit looked as if the chef shat it out onto our plate. We tried some of the top only to find the layer underneath was even worse. I paid an extra $7 for a stomach ache and diarrhea the next morning. Sushi: average for the price, it was not fresh but maybe because we came on a slow week night Shrimp tempura: light fry, light flavor. would not order again Pickles: japanese flavor meets local NY ingredients - sounded exciting but didn't deliver Tonkatsu: broth was delicious...but the noodles were overcooked and not firm the way they are supposed to be On a positive note, the bowls and plates here are beautiful. There were several items that were interesting, including the uni lover that I ordered. It came with a piece of uni on top of 2 pieces of avocado on top of a cracker. There is also some sort of asian sauce on top. Everything overpowered the uni. I wish the uni was more flavorful. My friend and I were both a little confused trying to decifer the flavors. We also shared the yuzu ceviche, which was ok considering that there was only two halves of a scallop and many chunks of salmon. The yuzu just tasted like lime juice in ceviche. We also ordered the smoked duck roll and a shrimp tempura roll. The reason for 3 star is the two rolls I ordered were quite bad. The rice was mushy and everything fell apart once picked up. Nothing stood out as I was expecting authentic solid Japanese food. If you do go, the prix fixe looked more promising. I would've done that if I had more time. read more

We ordered the unagi pie, crunchy spicy salmon roll, and the sashimi chirashi box. The unagi pie was interesting, never had eel on puff pastry before. The roll was not something I would order again - strangely sweet and not much crunch. The sashimi chirashi box was the best dish. It had a good selection of sashimi - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fluke, crab meat, salmon roe, and scallop. The rice itself has seaweed, mushrooms, and egg. I got the tonkotsu ramen that comes with a sushi roll ($16) and my friends either also went for the ramen or the bento box. Ramen broth was surprisedly good, not overly rich. Noodles on the other hand, are not my favorite. It's the wavy type of noodles but feel like it could've been cooked a bit longer. Next the sushi roll, it wasn't rolled tightly so when I pick up the sushi, it started to fall apart. But other then that, it was really good and fresh. The ratio of rice and fish was reasonable, in fact quite generous with the fish. Everyone was satisfied with the meal and service was amazing. I got the fish (salmon) + sushi (also salmon) set. The rice was cooked perfectly, and the SALMON WAS AMAZING. Hands down the best meal I've ever had in Brooklyn in terms of value. Corner Delhi along the same street is super good but it's expensive. The way that salmon collar was cooked was... chef's kiss. The service was also good - didn't think we waited long for anything and frequently had our dishes taken away and our waters refilled. I was really, really impressed. This is a quiet hidden cozy sushi ramen place. Very nice decor and great for dates. It has a nice dim atmosphere. I really like their menu items. I've never seen ramen or bento courses but they have a variety selection of it. I didn't eat anything too special. I only had two salads.: Wasan Brooklyn Salad and the Grilled Scallop Salad. The salads were very good even though I wish they were larger. These were very tiny salads. I do like that they put konbu in the salads. I enjoyed the dressing very much. Their scallops were very rare and I didn't like that so much but that's just my preference. This place was pretty quiet and empty on a Thursday night and the staff was pretty attentive. I'm so happy I live near Wasan. Their food has a wonderful, delicate flavor, is elegantly presented, and is served by kind and friendly staff. I come here every other weekend because they have an incredible lunch deal ($13), which includes: - Choice of protein (I always get the shrimp tempura, it's excellent) - Choice of side (white rice for me, but sometimes I'll add an extra $3 to get a negitoro roll) - Miso soup - Salad - A variety of little sides, including a slice of egg topped with ikura (salmon caviar), burdock root, roasted potato, and grilled eggplant -- my favorite Everything else on the menu looks great too, but I love the shrimp tempura bento so much that I keep ordering the same thing every time I come here. Boyfriend and I serendipitously showed up at Wasan on Setsubun Day, and the restaurant was serving a special "ehomaki" to celebrate: a sushi roll filled with shrimp, eel, avocado, tobiko, egg, and more (!!!). This place reminded me of one of those 3D illusions where everyone sees the image within the squiggly lines except you...like George in that Seinfeld episode. I was turned off immediately upon perusing the sake menu. Least expensive choice was $13 for a 6oz carafe. Tasted like any other generic rice wine. Yuzu salad dressing had zero Yuzu and I know my Yuzu since I order it from Japan regularly. Jalapeño ponzu had no jalapeño which was disclosed by a gentleman who appeared to be the owner. They have no house chili paste...they offered sriracha from the plastic bottle. Japanese fried chicken nuggets were raw. They were taken back; refried and dropped down in front of my teenage daughter as if it never happened. I love dark meat chicken but these nuggets were all sinew. Maki rolls were 6 tiny pieces cut from half of a normal size maki. The cooked salmon and black cod were ok but in no way make up for the creative deception going on here. read more

While searching for an authentic sushi place Wassan caught my eye. Im still fairly new to the sushi eating, but a friend told me to avoid the Chinese owned sushi places because they weren't as authentic. Wassan was highly reviewed on Yelp and other reviewers vouched for its authenticity so I gave it a shot. My first impression: The interior left more to be desired for. I came with a friend and as we were sitting down she noticed her seat was dirty. So she replaced it with the one next to her and that was dirty too. To be fair, they were cloth seats, so it looked like they were stained but were probably clean. Maybe time to invest in some new furniture? Our initial concerns were quickly forgotten as soon as our food came out. I ordered the sashimi bento box lunch set with tuna, salmon, yellow tail and one more type that I can't recall. My friend got 3 types of rolls (shrimp tempora, spicy salmon, spicy tuna). The presentation was nice. Everything looked great and fresh, there was no fishy smell. The cut was a bit chunky I think I would have preferred it in smaller pieces so I could savor it more. I couldn't wait to try the salmon. I must say each and every time I have sushi it grows on me more. This time was no different. I dipped the salmon in there spicy soy sauce, then I sampled the remaining fish. The texture was spot on, it wasn't mushy or overly chewy. My friend liked it too, this was her first experience eating sashimi and I'm glad it was a good one! We loved the rolls. From other experiences usually the shrimp tempura is the first to finish and the other ones are slowly eaten. Mainly because the raw fish rolls aren't as good as the fried shrimp. But at Wassan we were truly impressed with there tuna and salmon rolls. Dare I say it it might be the best ones I've had so far! One thing I loved is that they aren't cheap with the meat. You can really taste and chew a large chunk of salmon/tuna in each bite. They finished our meal off with some warm tea which was great to have on this cold day. Excellent bento boxes, so so ramen. There are several Japanese places within a few blocks but none of them compare to the bento boxes here. They also have lunch special menu which make the boxes pretty good deals. More recently we tried the sashimi chirashi bento box ($28) with uni (add $7), which came with thick slices of sashimi, even including 2 pieces of big scallops. They put pickles and seasoning and cucumbers on the rice, which makes the texture a bit crunchy and balanced the richness of the sashimi. The grilled fish bentos are equally good with interesting roasted root vegetables on the side (Salmon $13). Although the cod tends to be too rich with the flavoring. The ramen is decent with chewy noodles but not as flavorful. Finally, the homemade yuzu sorbet sounded better than it tasted because it was too icy and tangy. read more

Awesome lunch specials! Came in on a Saturday around 2:30pm with my fiance. I got one of the seasonal special menus - the striped bass bento ($16), and my fiance got the aji-fry (mackerel) bento ($13). Both of us got white rice for the second choice, because how the heck do you eat grilled/fried fish without rice?! I will admit that I was tempted to get the $3 add-on negi-toro roll but you just can't forgo rice with grilled fish if you're a decent human being. My seasonal special bento came with agedashi tofu and a tempura sweet yam (?). Everything in the bento was great - I especially loved the grilled shishito peppers and ikura-topped boiled egg half. My striped bass was a very generous portion and had quite a strong flavor. I wish there was more ground radish to balance it out. I'm a lover of grilled fish, so picking through bones is fine by me, but for those who struggle to navigate a boney fish, I wouldn't recommend getting the striped bass. The aji-fry, however, was boneless filets, fried to perfection. After finishing our meals, we were served some piping hot barley tea. I felt so full and relaxed!
