This is one of my favorite lowkey japanese places to visit. Its small and intimate but they use the space really well to not make you feel cluttered on other people. The service is always good too, the waitress we had was great. This time we had nigori soju (which got me just right), chicken curry, wagyu beef curry and sushi which all tasted really good. I love Wasan-- I've been coming here fairly regularly since they opened and it's always solid. The staff are friendly (family vibe!), they recognize regulars and can make recommendations about specials that they know you'll like based on previous visits :-) Don't sleep on the corn fritters when they have them, or the hiyashi chuka cold ramen when it's hot out! I love the cold ramen with the cedar sake, personally-- it's a go-to for me on all but the coldest of days. I love all their rolls and all of the appetizers I have tried over the years. Meanwhile, my husband loves their curry dishes, their fish collar dishes and their fried chicken. We find them fairly priced, especially for the neighborhood. I also love how they offer specials that reflect festivals and celebrations in Japan-- the variety showcases the chef's skills and passions, and even though i definitely have my staple go-to dishes that i love, the variety is delicious to explore. They've reduced the outdoor seating, but unless something wild is going on in the neighborhood and every restaurant is packed, you can usually get seated pretty quickly. read more

Great hidden gem in Brooklyn! Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night and it slowly filled up throughout the night. We had a reservation and were seated immediately around 6. We came here because I remember the first time we dined here long time ago it was very good. But this time we felt we were being ignored. After we stepped inside nobody came up to us. Even a single phrase "we'll be right with you" will make us feel more welcomed. Finally a waitress spoke to us and we were seated. Food and service were ok. We got the Wagyu Toban Yaki and was ok. I've had US beef that was better. And we got Gobo, Fried Burdock which was cold! That's like ordering French Fries and they're cold! They should have wrote "Pickled Fried Gobo". It was misleading. At least our server was friendly. Maybe that's why they have all day happy hour which was the only highlight of that dinner. This place is 5 stars just for being open so late! Late night, post-drink eats are somewhat limited in the surrounding neighborhoods outside of pizza or street meat. I stopped by Wasan with my cousin for a light and quick bite before going to an event at the Barclays. The place itself is clean with both indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated quickly. The staff was friendly enough. I wanted to get a toro roll but was disappointed to hear that they did not have any toro that day. My second choice was the Wagyu beef tendon dish. My cousin ordered the smoked duck & cucumber roll. We got the brussel sprouts to share. The wagyu beef tendon was decent but to be honest I wouldn't be able to tell if it was wagyu at all. It didn't taste or feel significantly different to me. It was good beef and it was cooked well, but I was disappointed by the amount of tendon in a dish called "Wagyu Beef Tendon". I got maybe a couple pieces of actual tendon and the rest was lean meat. The tofu in the dish was good and so was the egg (the I would've preferred it more soft-boiled). I tried a piece of my cousin's smoked duck & cucumber roll and was underwhelmed. I am a fan of duck though admittedly 99% of the time I have it is in the form of Peking duck. The duck in the roll was certainly smokey, but I was not really a fan. My cousin wasn't either. It wasn't terrible, but I don't think I would have it again. The brussel sprouts were pretty good. They were lightly fried and came with a side of curry salt and pepper. While they were tasty, I think the order was around $10 which makes it a little iffy to me. The service was nice and attentive though there were only 2 other parties while we were there. I'm not opposed to coming back, but I'm certainly in no rush. read more

The food here is bomb!!! I brought my mom here for a weekday lunch date and she was so impressed. We ordered two bentos (one eel and one miso salmon) and they each came with miso soup, a side salad, a hard boiled egg, a veggie spring roll, two piece of fried sweet potato, a few pieces if eggplant and something that I believe is burdock root. I was torn between giving a 3 or 4 star. Here's why: Went here on a Friday eve with a buddy. We got some sake shots and individual drinks to start. For food, they ordered some small dishes and me, the veggie ramen. The wait for the food was very long, nearly 50 minutes. Most tables were full but you could see not many people were eating. Kitchen was very backed up. We even attempted to order additional food and the poor waitress seemed so distressed and warned us it would take at least 30 mins. Not a great experience waiting long for food, then still being hungry but can't order more. Womp! But back to food. My friend's Salmon and Tuna sushi was tasty - I even grabbed a few pieces while I waited for my ramen. The ramen was underwhelming - and seemed thrown together in a rush. The veggies were randomly cut with no uniformity and were all different temperatures. A red flag for me but I was too hungry to overthink it (food safety). Noodles themselves were well prepared. The broth was good as well but the entirety of the dish didn't feel harmonious, if that makes sense. The staff was very touch and go. Never asked us if we needed anything after ordering. Our water ran out and I ended up drinking the water in my bag. The staff definitely needs more support to be sustainable. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. It's been a few years since we last visited Wasan. I am so glad that it continues to remain a solid option for Japanese food in the neighborhood. We arrived on a windy evening and decided to order some ramen and udon to warm us up. The ramen was decent, though not comparable to ones from ramen specialists nearby. On the other hand, the udon was forgettable, especially with the once-crispy shrimp tempura turning soggy on top of the broth. The highlight of our meal was hands down the chirashi bowl. I actually liked that they presented the sliced sashimi pieces in a separate bowl from the rice, so that I didn't have to push away the sashimi in order to get to the rice usually found at the bottom of the same bowl. Although I wouldn't consider Wasan a sushi restaurant, the quality of the fish here was great! Every type of sashimi we tasted was fresh and sweet. For dessert, we ordered the pumpkin ice cream and the matcha Panna Cotta. The matcha taste from the Panna Cotta balanced well with the azuki beans. read more

Found this spot because in addition to takeout and delivery they offer outdoor heated seating! A friend generously treated us to a delicious meal including the eel set which came with buns that were soft and delectable. Wasan is our neighborhood spot. It's an authentic almost hole in the wall place, and the basic inside decor gets the job done. What really stuns is how fresh the fish is for the price point... we are essentially robbing them for the quality of food you get. We've been there with 4 people and ordered multiple entrees, appetizers, and rounds of drinks for less than $40pp. We first came here after a long day of moving into the neighborhood. We stumbled across it and could not believe how lucky we were to find an authentic Japanese spot like this down the street. Since then we've been back more than two dozen times and the fish never fails to disappoint. The sushi and sashimi are true winners. For $5, you can get a shot of the sake of the day, including the sake imported and made especially for this restaurant, not to mention an array of Japanese beers. The tempura and eel are also winners. If you get there early enough in the day to get the toro, be prepared to taste fatty tuna that will melt in your mouth. The menus a few months back announced they had to make a (likely long overdue) increase in prices due to inflation, and they may have had a management change because the music leans slightly club-like now rather than the calmer music they used to play. They also did away with their paper and wood menus and display QR codes. I haven't noticed any differences in the food, luckily! read more

Wasan Brooklyn is a hidden spot for authentic Japanese food recommended by my Japanese friend. We had their Bento box with a reasonable price (from$13) and different combinations of entree and sides. Their food was delicate and you can tell how the chef care about what they serve from all the details. My favorite was the grilled yellow collar, amazingly delicious and juicy. Their sashimi was also great, fresh and cut in a not-traditional but satisfied way with great portion. We definitely will plan to visit again for their dinner menu shortly. read more

A cute little authentic Japanese restaurant located in Park Slope area. The service was great - everyone is super friendly. Everything that we ordered was fresh and delicious. There were a few items that we ordered but they didn't have (toro & uni roll, yuzu mimosa, yuzu sake) - lots of supply chain issues. The hotpot that we ordered was surprisingly really flavorful - the broth had such sweet flavors but still felt very light and crisp. They saw that we had finished our broth and asked if we wanted a refill on it - of course we had to! I hate to write such a negative review during such a challenging period for the food and restaurant scene in NYC... but this spot was just so underwhelming and disappointing that I felt compelled to. Service was inattentive and clumsy at best. Our server barely checked-in with out table throughout our meal. We intended to order dessert, but we were left stranded for 30 minutes after completing our meal. So, we just left and went to a nearby pastry shop to satisfy our sweet tooth. The crowd and atmosphere was not to our liking (people really need to learn better manners). You don't need to yell to converse in a small restaurant space and excessively use curse words... especially with a lot of children around. The quality of fish was low; the rolls we ordered were bland and tasteless; and the appetizers/small plates we ordered were mixed. The miso soup was the highlight of our meal (if that is any indication of what's to come). Their signature Corn Agedashi arrived at our table mushy.
