The sushi here is actually fantastic. I loved everything I ordered. However, my boyfriend and I came in with a Groupon (being in the service industry ourselves, we do this so we can try a lot and tip well - we usually spend over double on our Groupon, especially when it comes to sushi places) and the staff didn't seem to like this. Service was terrible. SO SLOW and inattentive. On our groupon, it said "free sake included." Our server said management doesn't allow the free sake with a groupon. Um, ON THE GROUPON IT STATES free sake. He argued with us and didn't allow management to come to our table. I had to ask for water about 7 times. Our food came out little by little and took FOREVER. Every dish that came out we gobbled down and had to wait another 10 minutes for our next dish. We saw our sushi sitting at the sushi bar for almost 15 minutes before it was brought over to us. I don't understand why restaurants offer a groupon if they hate honoring it. DON'T DO IT THEN. In being so rude they lost two very spend friendly potential customers and tippers. read more

Ok 5 stars is bit too much but I can't help it! I love their sushi! I wish they were in Poland! When I'm in NYC I try to visit as muuch as posiible. The restaurat it's ok, I preffer to take my order to go and eat it at my place. The sushi is always fresh and very tasty. The prices are great 4-6 dollars a roll. They have great lunch deal $7,50 for 2 rolls + soup/salad and $10.50 for 3 rolls + soup/salad. I never tried anything else than sushi so can't really tell if it's good. Sure the choices of Sushi/Japanese places is limited in Greenpoint, but the food ordered is always just sub-par, a bit smelly, and when ordering take out, ALWAYS late and cold. i wouldn't recommend it for the cost of just "eh...okay food". A bit of a miss. Ordered a large selection of rolls for a sushi feast. Lots of variety, sure, but they are super tiny. Last night after seeing Mark Ribot, C. and I had a hankering for sushi. Luckily, there are two sushi bars on my walk home in Greenpoint. This is one of them. We splurged on the whole nine yards. Miso soup. Shumai. A piece of salmon and a piece of eel. And three rolls. I forgot exactly which rolls we ordered. One was a basic roll with carrot, fish, and other ingredients. One was more fancy and had "wasabi" in the name -- tons of wasabi in that one! And the last one was more sweet than savory. Its ingredients included banana, and it was drizzled with some sort of plum sauce. Amazingly good. The staff is super friendly and nice, and I'd come here again in a minute. read more

My husband bring me to go Sushi from this place and I love it so much that we decide to do a date night on a dead cold Monday. We noticed the big sign "Hot sake for dine in order" got me so excited and made me happy I came. The restaurant was empty but the deliveries guys busy. We order a lot of food. It was all fresh and tasty. The server never came back to see us after he dropped the food neither to refill of tea or offer water. Pick up empty plates etc... After looking for him and try to catch his attention 3 times (since he was prepping the delivery order in the back). A manager was on site at all time hypnotized by the computer. We ask about the special Sake offer and he look at us all surprised and make us feel like beggars for free stuff. The Sushi chef finally hear us and told us we could have it. We even order two items to go but the server got it wrong ( one tuna avocado roll became 2 avocado rolls) communication problem after we repeated 3 times. Not worth the tips... but too late we realized at home. We Call him 3 more time to get our check and it's only when we put our coats on that he finally rushed. He point to our to go order on the table next to him to come get it. lol. We are pretty patient and don't need a lot of attention ( we works in restaurant ourselves) but empty restaurant means descent service? I will stick to delivery or to go. Service was really minimal cause delivery was more important. Tips could have go to another roll (so good). The food was so on point. service could be better but we still love you a lot. read more

I discovered Wasabi during my last trip to NY and I have to say it wasn't that bad! I must admit I was a bit confused about the sushi wrapped in small individual plastic bag (not eco friendly at all) and the interior design is not really my type. Wasabi has a decent lunch special that includes soup, salad and a free drink. I have to agree with Ray though I found out the chef/ owner is from Indonesia and studying at the French Culinary Institute so there is hope for improvement. The sushi was tasty and the two fish lunch dish in a bento was slathered in sweet terriyaki. The chef from Silent H was in the house and we all chatted as he described some of his dishes(Vietnamese cuisine) and I was enticed to go as I have always wanted to eat there. Back to Wasabi, the chef whipped up a special salad for me with crab(fake), salmon, lettuce, tomatoes and grapefruit which was quite yummy. read more

I am reviewing this in terms of a medium run of the mill sushi place. It is not in the same category as amazing places like Bozu but it is good for the no frills class of sushi it obviously is. The uni was fresh, which is always a good sign. The sushi chef was so nice and chatted with me and gave me a little extra "special" sushi with my meal. I ordered a taco salad which I expected to be just octopus, but it was actually very large and had a lot of octopus on greens. The rest of my sushi was good for the price. I will return. read more

Like just about everywhere else, Wasabi seems to be hurting for money in this economy. They've giving out free sake with dinner entrees & lower prices for a few menu items have been written next to the printed versions. Also, the place seems near-deserted every time I walk by. None of the four sushi bars clustered around the Bedford L stop are outstanding; all are adequate. Wasabi does get props for having a decently varied lunch special menu, with a number of bento & roll combo & other options. Their hand rolls were generously stuffed, even if the flavours weren't necessarily anything to write home about, and their hot baby octopus appetizer was a good bargain for $5.50, if alarmingly red. I have no objection to returning, but I also can't really see why anyone would seek Wasabi out. read more

I've been to or ordered from Wasabi over 10 times. I do like it, but they have some issues that I think could be remedied pretty easily. Truth be told, I would like to leave a review of 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. First, the staff. For the most part, the waiters and waitresses have been inattentive to my girlfriend and I when we've ate in the restaurant. There is a younger waiter that is newish there that has been great, but the waitresses are blah. Second, the takeout. I ordered pickup recently, waited 25 minutes and walked over. It wasn't ready yet, so I walked home and walked back in 15 minutes when I was told to come back in 10. My order still wasn't packaged in a bag when I showed up, and getting them to put it together took another 5 minutes. I didn't complain, but I can't help think they could've been a little bit more on top of their game. The sushi selection for the lunch special is also poor. Less than a block away at Sapporo Haru, you can order basically any normal roll with the lunch special. At Wasabi, the selection of rolls for the lunch special is poor. Which is fine, I just go to Sapporo, but they're losing a lot of business because their maki lunch specials aren't great. And I generally like getting Salmon Avocado, Tuna Avocado and maybe Spicy Crunchy Tuna if I'm hungry. I can't get any of those at Wasabi in their sushi lunch combo. Fix the takeout, the staff and the lunch menu and you guys would do so much more business. I live right door and I'm there enough I'm pretty sure the staff recognizes me when I walk in because my girlfriend and I go regularly. Used to order a lot from this place, which was recommended by a former roommate. And that was good. However, I had the crazy idea of going to the source and eating there myself. The place was full, so I decided to sit at the bar with my date. 10 points of gross right there. The bar was filthy. I think I even saw a bug crawling underneath it, but because I wasn't sure, I stayed. After that I had the audacity of going to the bathroom. God awful disgustingness lords were there. I mean, I've seen bathrooms so clean that you can eat off of. You would not do that in that bathroom. I mean you can't even use the bathroom as a bathroom. But in any event, not the point. The food in this place keeps getting worse, exponentially. For every order it gets ten times worse, well, I'm not here to teach you math. Greenpoint has a surprising number of Japanese restaurants, and so far all of them are pretty unexciting. I found Wasabi to be a little below average for the neighborhood, but in all, not bad. From the vegetarian perspective, we tried a few rolls. The mango/avocado/cucumber was the best. The yasai roll contained various pickled vegetables and squash, and it had a weird flavor but was interesting, at least. The sweet potato roll was very subpar, and the zenzen (seaweed, shiitake, mushroom) was not great. The sushi meal comes with salad, which is pretty lackluster and has a creamy dressing rather than the typical carrot ginger. The miso soup was fine. I was glad to be here with a groupon for the reduced cost. Overall, the service was fine and ambience okay, plus the ubiquitous free hot sake was happening. This place has gone downhill. Got some terrible delivery here last week. Ordered a maki combo to be delivered. Sushi rice was soggy and fish tasted off. Also a sharp bone in the California roll. You should not come here with expectations of some amazing fresh from japan fish as it clearly does not cater at that price point. Went here for a friend's birthday party with about 12 other people. Coming into it I wasn't impressed by the aesthetic, and was expecting mediocre sushi. However, I was pleasantly surprised--the fish was fresh and the special rolls were flavorful and well-presented. It also turned out that they served above-average size portions, so I ended up ordering way too much food! The best part about the place was that they served us sake on the house; I'm not sure if this was just because it was a birthday party or what, but it certainly made the cold walk home afterward a bit more pleasant. That for us was not a problem the groupon it self is a great deal an most places do not offer u 2 deals at the same time after all they are running a business an they do want to make money, so I don't blame them.. Either the employees are lazy or the management is horrible because I came to the restaurant at 11:00pm on a Saturday night. Advertised on their takeout menu and on Google, it says that they close at twelve. It's not like I walked in the store without knowledge of the time they closed, I did research, went out of my way, and specifically chose to drive to that location only to be told that they're closed. They need to hire new employees, rearrange their shifts so they have people that are actually able to work until midnight, or have the manager order new take out menus and call Google to fix their store hours. I decided to go to Sapporo Ichiban right down the block, the interior was way better, had more seating options, and they took my order at 11:20 when they close at 11:30! They had great service and next time I will go straight there and save myself the trouble. read more

We eat here a lot. Probably too much. The sushi is always fresh. The guys working the sushi bar are nice and knowledgeable and tell us what is good and what is not honestly. I get the spicy girl roll a lot, but they are all good. They don't over do the rice in their rolls. They have a lot of rolls to choose from and a great revolving list on the specials. read more

i have never been disappointed by any portion of my wasabi meal except the cost. some rolls seem to be overpriced by a dollar or two, but oh well, it's the best sushi in the neighborhood. i order delivery every now and then and they usually show up within 30-40 minutes. and the delivery man could not be happier to bring you your food - what a great smile! just dined there for the first time and the service was great - they brought us out free soup & salad, and made our experience great! i don't really have anything funny or clever to say about wasabi. it's just good sushi. the end! read more

We've used their online ordering service 3X now. The first two times it was perfect, and you have that extra confidence that your order was exactly what you wanted. The third time, we called after an 90 minutes (on a Monday night) to see where the food was, and they said "oh, here it is. we start it now" and hung up. No apology, no anything.
