Honey walnut shrimp had the perfect glazed crisp to it, although if you order it to-go in the same box as other warm items, such as their combo meals, it will lose that crisp from the heat. I wouldn't say that's the restaurants fault though. It's a perfect no frills spot for dinner or lunch. read more

I liked the Cantonese Chinese Comfort food on the menu and the portions, price and quality makes this one of the best options for Chinese food in the area for family styled eating or take-out. It's a great find on Ocean Avenue, near City College in the Ingleside. Parking can be a challenge for meters but if you go to adjacent residential neighborhood street parking for free and are willing to talk a little, it's not that bad. Overall, this place had friendly staff. I can tell it's family run, and they care about their frequent customers, but the food just wasn't that good in my opinion. Sweet and sour chicken was fatty and dry and had too much batter. The complimentary seaweed soup was so horrible, a lot of starch and just hard to drink. Homeless people kept coming in to keep warm, so it was uncomfortable seeing not one, not two, but three homeless men come in at different times asking for food or spare change. But the woman working there was friendly (she's been at it since 1985) and it's veg-friendly, so I gave it a go. We got mixed veggie chow mein, General Tsos tofu, General Tsos chicken, and beef chow fun. When I first ordered the mixed veggie chow mein, unfortunately we didn't receive noodles and were left essentially with a veggie dish. It wasn't the end of the world but I would double check when you receive your order. As for the beef chow fun, it wasn't anything different from beef chow funs I've had at other Chinese restaurants. The stars of the show are the General Tso dishes! I absolutely loved the sauce and whether you're going vegetarian with the tofu or want to eat meat such as the chicken, you won't be disappointed! The food, the smell coming from the kitchen, even the way this place looks reminds me of my aunt's house where everyone got together. That was the place I would take my shoes off, wear someone's ugly sweater, drink some random soupy medicine stuff I'm forced to drink lest I die a premature and painful death before laying on the sofa with the "clink clink" sound of MJ tiles on the tables lulling me to sleep before waking to an abundance of lovingly cooked food on the dinner table. The meals I have had here transported me to that place. Certain types of home style cooking does that to me. Interestingly enough, this isn't my home, and these wonderful people aren't my family. My photographs speak to what I ordered. It was really affordable despite ordering ala carte instead of their inexpensive pre-set menus for groups of 2 or 4. This isn't a fancy restaurant by any means. The food will not resemble mass produced gross Panda Express or Westernized watered down weird versions of Chinese food. No, this restaurant does it the way it should be done. I like that. I like that a lot DON'T ORDER THE WON TON SOUP! It wasn't good, which makes me sad because the owner gave us an extra family sized bowl while we waited for the whole fried fish. I'm so happy I found this place. Tried this takeout place to mix up our routine of ordering from small businesses in the neighborhood. We ordered: Beef and vegetable pan fried noodle - very good. Tons of veggies. Beef was tender. Ask them to box the noodle separately so you don't have super soggy noodles when you are ready to eat. Shrimp and vegetable pan fried noodle - same as above except with shrimp. Shrimp were a tad overcooked (rubbery) but flavor was good Walnut prawns - very good but could be so much better fresh (the shrimps were soggy and lost the crispy texture) Hot and sour soup - nice portion size. Vinegar flavor on point. Lots of ingredients including all traditional items like tofu. Very good. Beef stew clay pot - very flavorful. The beef was tender, juicy and included some tendon/ gelatinous pieces that I enjoyed. Lots of bean curd too - which soaks up the sauce. No rice is included on the side, so order or make some rice for this dish! Salt and pepper chicken wing - wings were good but I prefer more salt and pepper flavor. A bit bland for my liking but fried well and priced nicely for 9 wings ! Pros: Price - very competitive Taste - food is flavorful given no added MSG. Food is also cooked to order and hot! Menu - large menu with lots of options Portion size - generous especially with vegetables! Its nice to get a good amount of fresh veggies :) Cons: Although the menu mentions no added MSG, there is in fact MSG in some items. Full disclosure: I went to school with the children of the owners, so I may be a little bias. I ordered from them recently for a party I was hosting. It was really easy to call in the day before, and they can work with you on the amount of food. When they say enough for one person, they make the assumption that's all their eating. So if you order noodles for 15 people, you're literally getting enough noodles to fill 15 people up. I worked with them to make vegan noodles (rice noodle chow mien with no egg), as we had a vegan attending. It was cooked pretty well, and was very filling. Salt and Pepper Chicken wings: they're really good, but you need to eat them fast. Or maybe I needed to open the tin foil so it didn't steam. The fry is a little more like a thick batter (think beer batter). The chili peppers were delicious. Mixed Veggies: I did say we had a vegan, right? They were really nice at figuring out how to make this one more substantial, and ended up adding tofu in the mix. Overall, it was a pretty easy process. We had a ton of leftovers, though people were happy to take the rest. It's one of the best Chinese food spots on the Ocean Avenue corridor. Again, might be bias because I spoke to the owner in Chinese, and she kind of knew who I was because of her children. But. The owner lady gives suggestions when you order and she is pretty spot on. She also greets usual customers by first name and knows the usuals and their orders. This is one of those places where you can't judge a book by its cover. From the outside, the Golden China aka Wang Wah doesn't look like much, the inside isn't impressive at all either. However this place is very affordable (about $5.00- $10.00 pp) and the food and service were great. My friends and I went out for Chinese last night. One of my friends yelped the neighborhood looking for restaurants on her phone and we were off to try the Golden China restaurant. We ordered Honey Walnut Prawns with Chicken Fried Rice, Beef Chow Fun and Kung Pow Chicken. They served us complimentary Won Ton soup and tea while we waited. The dishes came out and they were huge! We ended up taking home two big boxes of leftovers. We could have served 5 people for the amount of food and that was a great value. I'm giving this place 4 stars based on the taste and value. The one you'll pickup on the way home from after a long Monday at work, or on Saturday night when you're just lounging around in your pajamas and don't feel like cooking or changing out of your pajamas. . Golden China is average-good, inexpensive food in a run-down kinda restaurant. Normally that's my cup'o'tea but I've only been to this joint once. Why? Because on our first trip, we ordered 2 plates to eat there and 1 to go. We ate, paid, took our to-go and left. Then when he went back the next week with his roomie, the waitress told him he she forgot to add our to-go order to the check on our first trip and charged him for it! Wtf?! I think I'd have noticed if there was something on the bill missing... he paid because he wasn't sure and didn't want any problems. That's bad business. We haven't been back.
