I was super hesitant to try this place. Fact, I was a frequent diner of the original Wanfu on Oltorf circa the 90's. It was 5 minutes away from my mom's office. I LOVED this restaurant in it's heyday. Pass every Chinese restaurant from Driftwood to the east side of 35. Known about the North Austin one for some time but here's the ultimate question. Do you risk tarnishing the precious memories if it's terrible? I'd already read other Yelpers accounts stating it's not what it once was. Considered NOT going today; Tom Cruise from Risky Business made me say.. Nobody in the dining room just after opening. Anybody home? Hey! There's a staff; all two of them! GF was getting worried but we persisted. So, we went a little crazy on ordering and minus some Yelp cred for me as I didn't even get a photo my own dish. First bites were the dumplings. Yeah, think Sam's Club and fried too long. Eggrolls started the redemption reunion with a sauce that perhaps seemed familiar. Chicken wing pics on Yelp looked tasty and kiddo Rooster has been experimenting. Crispy, hot, unique toppings, and flavorful. Egg drop with a yellowish cornstarch glow? Check! Wanfu back in the day was famous for their General Tso's sauce. For this visit it was as close as my near 50 year old taste buds can remember. Other dishes consumed were Moo Goo Gai Pan and Combo Fried Rice. Flashback in my dining history I've revisited some remakes and always had some nice things to say. This visit was no different; not perfect but it was an excellent meal in tribute to the original. Sooooooo I really dislike writing negative reviews.... If you've lived in Austin for a decade plus you remember Wanfu in its hayday. The crab Rangoon used to be on point. The sesame seed chicken.... Well, I've visited their north location twice now and it's just very disappointing. The egg drop soup is basically just water. The egg foo young was way over cooked. The sesame chicken was mostly burnt bread. The green tea was mostly water. I took my partner and talked the place up but it just doesn't deliver. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to when it was awesome. read more

We enjoyed the General Tso's chicken, a cup of very tasty wonton soup and some very good crab Rangoon, and have enough Tso's left over another meal. We enjoyed visiting with the hostess and owner...very friendly and passionate about their food. We will be back for more goodies. read more

Decided Christmas night wouldn't be complete without Chinese food and learned Wanfu III was open. I ordered online and requested delivery. There was a hiccup with my order making it to the kitchen, and after a delay, I was able to call and check for status. Having said that, the staff made good, expediting my order and getting it right. The pu pu appetizer was a big hit, with people fighting over the spareribs and fried wonton. The ginger chicken tasted light and was aromatic. The orange shrimp and orange chicken were hearty and flavorful. Red bean sesame balls made a tasty finish to the meal. I can't imagine how crazy it is to run a Chinese restaurant on Christmas, but applause to everyone at Wanfu who managed to prep, cook and deliver exactly what I was craving. I was craving for some wings that wasn't from your mainstream food chain and Wanfu did not disappoint. I ordered a set of Lemon Pepper and a set of Teriyaki Wings. For $11 a piece, they definitely did not disappoint. I got 8 Wings each that were of nice size and had plenty of spices/sauces. I even ordered a side of Spring Rolls and they were plenty big. Thank you Wanfu for being open on Christmas Eve! Last night I ordered Wanfu because we had a terrible incident with Randall's having worms in their potatoes and it ruined our 2020 Christmas Eve dinner. We were able to order wanfu in the nick of time and they got here before midnight with our dinner! We will forever be grateful and always remember this as the Christmas Story Christmas! My fiance and I are so happy thank you guys so much for being so wonderful and delivering on Christmas Eve we will always remember this as such a magical wonderful Christmas!! Wanfu used to be one of my favorite ever. I was excited to see they were able to deliver to my work. Was disappointed however once I took a bite. I ordered the salt and pepper fish and asked for it to be mild. The fish was over cooked to the point everything a hard crispy or super tough depending on how thick the piece was. Same with the rangoons - they were just hard, not crispy and just disappointing for having spent $20+ on two items read more

It was alright. I didn't manage to go in but I believe I got ubereats that day. The noodles were way more veggies than normal and they where the thick noodles. I myself prefer the thin lo mein. I went there before last year and it was mediocre...Thought I would give them a fair shake give them one more shot a few days ago. Quite possible the worst Chinese food I ever had in almost my 50 yrs. of life. I feel bad for giving this rating but...I feel like people should know. They use sub par quality meats (tough and smelly). It has a smell to it that reminds me of the cheap Hill Country Fare meats the grocery stores sell...Horrible. The Thai noodle dish was a mess (all the thick rice noodles were just all folded and stuck like one big mass). The Pu Pu platter was so so. Placed an order for delivery at 6:30 pm and was told to expect it in 45 mins. After calling twice to check up on order, cold food arrived an hour and 30 mins later. We are calling back to get a refund on slow delivery and cold food and Wanfu is trying to be stingy about returning our money, and by stingy I mean its taken 4 attempts to be refunded. We're two miles away and I refuse to pay full price for cold food delivered almost 2 hours late. Edit: after finally being pushed to irate, where I heard them verbally abuse me & my opinions after being rudely handed off to what i assume as the owner. We were informed from grub hub the delivery would be an hour, no biggie or at least we thought. 2 hours go by with no call from the restaurant or any update on the delay. Finally get in contact with Grubhub to see what the delay is... Come to find out as the delivery guy was walking up to our door one of our neighbors says they actually delivered take out... FIRST OFF WHAT DELIVERY GUY DOES NOT CHECK THE F RECEIPT BEFORE JUST GIVING IT TO A RANDOM HOUSE!!! SECOND: Did you not put an address in your GPS on the way over??? The crispy duck and Thai noodles were on point. We've tried them all and this is the best Chinese food I've had in Austin.

My wife and I really enjoyed dining at the Wanfu III food trailer near UT campus, and after Sara (the owner) told us she was closing it down and opening a restaurant, we were excited to try it. The food was good -- classic American Chinese executed very well. I got the General Tso chicken, and it was crispy, spicy, and flavorful. My wife got the basil fried rice, which was pretty tasty, if a bit bland and lacking in vegetables. The portions were fairly generous for both dishes. So why only three stars then? In the age of fast casual and the Chipotle model, this place feels like an anachronism. It reminds me of the Chinese restaurants I ate at as a kid in the Midwestern college town where we lived. The problem is that when I think of American Chinese food, I don't think of a sit-down meal with table service; I think of something cheap and quick, and this isn't it. With two entrees and a bowl of soup, we're at $30 with tip. Price notwithstanding, if I'm going to do the full "eating out" experience, there are plenty of other places in town I'd rather go. To sum it up: A good bet for lunch and take-out. You can do better for dinner. read more

Overall, it was okay. Maybe 3.5 stars but not 4, so I stuck with 3. This was my first time here, so I wanted to try several things. I got Wanfu Duck, Szechuan Beef, and Thai Lemongrass Chicken. The Wanfu Duck was good...sliced duck sautéed with mushrooms and baby corn in a brown sauce with rice. It had been a while since I'd had duck, and I had forgotten how fatty it is, so I'm not sure I'll order this again. Maybe though...the flavor was good. The Szechuan Beef had good flavor and spice level, but there were way too many carrots in the stir fry mix. The veggie mix was almost all carrots. The Thai Lemongrass Chicken was good. I really enjoyed it and would order it again. The beef and chicken entrees were from the lunch special menu, so they came with soup. The hot and sour soup was a little bland. The egg drop soup was not good. It was sweet and tasted like corn. It even had some pieces of corn in it. I wouldn't order either one again. The lunch special is supposed to come with an egg roll, so I should have gotten two but I got none. I wish I could have tried them. I also ordered wonton soup and it was okay, but it didn't have wontons. Instead, there were full size dumplings in it which was a little different. I used a coupon to get a free order of Crab Rangoon which were average. So all in all, it wasn't bad. I just wasn't very impressed. The service was very friendly though. The almond chicken had rancid almonds in it and although i had tried some of the chicken, I threw the whole thing away as I did not want to get sick since all of it was contaminated with rancid almond. Yuk! My husband's sweet & sour pork was too dry. Portions were way too big for nasty food. read more

I had the orange chicken, my kiddo had the pork delight. Both were amazingly fresh and very delicious. We also had crab rangoons and found them to be very tasty as well. Reminiscent of the original wanfu in food selection and taste. So happy to see they've reopened again and very excited to not be let down. :) read more

Ever go to a place where the staff and management are wonderful, but the food is not? That's Wanfu 3, I really like the welcoming hospitality of the staff, but the food needs help. I ordered the beef sticks, egg roll and a lunch Mongolian Beef. The beef was extremely tough and smothered in a sauce that was way too sweet. The beef was so tough that it hurt to chew it. If you go, order something like soup or some other item that is safe to chew without injury. If the food were to improve, this place would be great! read more

I stop by Wanfu about once every two weeks. Every time I go, I get something new, have never been disappointed, and have enough food to share with one plate. The price is right and the portions are really good. Dishes that I can confirm are good: Salt and Pepper Chicken, General TSO Chicken, Orange Beef, Thai Spicy Chicken, Chicken Curry, Mongolian Beef, Combination Fried Rice, Beijing Rice Noodle, Singapore Rice Noodle, Thai Spicy Lomein, and Bangkok Fried Rice. The $2 upgrade to add soup, egg roll, and sweet biscuits are really nice. The owner has a crazy good memory and gives me suggestions about what I should try next when I go in. The place is always empty, but I suspect the majority of their customers are like me and get it to go. Great Friday lunch experience! Happened to be going by and was familiar with another Wanfu restaurant. Sure enough, same food! I had the lunch Spicy Chicken with Hot and Sour soup. Also came with steamed rice and an eggroll. The soup was a little salty, but tasted very good and was served hot. The food came out before I had even finished the soup (great for my short lunch.) The Spicy Chicken was recommended by the owner and it was a very good choice. The veggies were cooked well and the sauce tasted wonderful. Also, ice was under 2 bucks. I used to frequent the Wanfu on the south side when my sister lived there. We loved it and the food was top notch. I was disappointed when it closed and was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this one up north! I was underwhelmed. The delivery driver's are always great and even though they say 60-70 minutes for delivery, I think we have always gotten ours around the 45 minute mark which is great. I'm very picky about my Chinese food as I grew up on NY style Chinese. This is good, they have standard Sesame Chicken/Tofu, the sauce is a little watery but I like to drizzle it on my rice. The white rice is very tasty. They might have my favorite white rice. Their Hot and Sour soup is not amazing, but it's good too.
