The interior was so inviting, but I wish I could say the same about the gal working there. It was very much a no-fluff, no-frills experience. I got one Homer and one blueberry cake donut. Maybe it was because I went in during the afternoon so they weren't as fresh (there was no one else in the store, so maybe all the locals know to go earlier in the day), but I thought they tasted just ok. While visiting Austin, I was excited to see they had one of these right in downtown!!! I've been to the one in Portland several times, pretty much every time I go down there. To my surprise, although the line was to the door, it was not past that and around the building (which it seems to be every time I've gone to the one in Portland). The staff was patient, helpful and very friendly. It was my friend's first time there, so it wasn't the quickest order and check out, so I appreciated that. The doughnuts are plentiful, fresh and as always original and creative. Although I can't say this is the absolute best doughnut place (which is the reason for the 4 stars), but they are very good. I usually try to get a whole, or a half a dozen. Also, this place only takes cash, so be prepared for that. The place was clean, lots of seating, which although we didn't stay there to enjoy the doughnuts and went back, but it was nice having options. Also, I should mention this was late at night, which could be part of the reason it was fairly empty. All in all, this place is awesome, with lots of options, different doughnut varieties, for all flavors, types and styles, that you may or may not have even thunk of. The wife and I were in Austin, why not go to Voodoo Doughnuts :) It's our first time here, so we decided to get 6 donuts :) got 3 Voodoo Dolls, 1 grapeape, 1 Neapolitan and 1 ol' dirty bastard. Voodooo by far was our favorite!!! OMG, that raspberry filling and the fluffy donut was a match made in heaven...on point for the nation! Ol' dirty bastard was a little too sweet for our taste and the Oreos were a little stale. Neapolitan and grapeape were both equally delicious. Wowza - the donuts make me go nuts! We got a couple different types, but the classic glaze and classic chocolate were probably the best. Very fluffy and light and sweet. The captain crunch was so good but couldn't do a full one and destroyed the roof of my mouth. The chocolate Oreo peanut butter was rich, likewise would be tough to finish one on my own. I'm not a sweets person but I feel I need to add my two cents about Voodoo Doughnuts. The place itself is clean, inviting. Menu is self explanatory and it's efficient. The cashier was very friendly. This is a CASH only location but ATMs are available. Last time I went ordered: the old dirty bastard, oh captain my captain, grape ape, glazed and the famous voodoo doll. They are really good, not greasy but too sweet for me. The coffee is nothing extraordinary but it pairs well with the donuts and it don't have an aftertaste that some generic brews have. I discovered the original Voodoo Doughnut in Portland years ago and I fell in love with the buttermilk bar and peach fritter and to this day they are both 2 of my favorite choices. I have tried a few others, but they were dry/stale and turned me off. I was happy to see that Austin gained a location as Voodoo definitely helps keep Austin weird and let's be honest, everyone needs to be able to show off a pink box at least once in their life. I was worried about coming here on a Saturday morning as I know Voodoo usually commands a long line, however, due to the emptiness of 6th street we were in luck! While they did not have the peach fritter, they had an apple fritter, my illustrious buttermilk bar, powdered sugar donut, Homer Simpson (which my son loved), and a couple of chocolate donuts and we were set. After trying great artisan donuts over the years, I have to say that Voodoo is good and if you have never tried them, they are worth at least one try. read more

This was a nice place to come to in downtown Austin! It's decor is very colorful and bright! They have an inside seating area for you to enjoy your treats in a cool area. The doughnut menu has a large selection and the names are pretty funny. They are probably not the best doughnuts I've had but they are the most creative! I was afraid that this place wouldn't live up to the hype. I was definitely wrong. It was just as I imagined. All the donuts looked amazing! We tried the Chuckles and Raspberry Romeo. They were both very good. The raspberry filling inside the Raspberry Romeo was one of the best filling I've ever had inside a donut. Voodoo donuts are well known donuts from Portland. I've heard a lot about it over the last several years, and there's been a lot of hype around it. Unfortunately, Voodoo donuts does not live up to the hype. Donuts are pretty hard to get wrong. The donuts here, while very creative, aren't very great. They're tasty (of course - they're donuts!), but the quality of the donuts themselves don't seem any better than other donut shops. Sure, you might have fruit loops or crushed oreos on top - but the novelty wears off fast. Honestly, give me Shipley's or Krispy Kreme over Voodoo's any day. Also when I entered, there was live music playing, which would normally be a good thing. Unfortunately, the music here was unbelievably loud and deafening. It was actually painful to go inside, and we immediately left after getting our donuts to get out of the noise. If you've heard a lot about this place, I'd say don't believe the hype. Best suggestion: Keep it simple. We tried a variety of doughnuts from Voodoo and we found that the simpler the better! The portland creme, Mcminnville, mango tango, dirt doughnuts were all meh. The dough to filling/topping ratio was very off. Way too much filling/toppings and all too sweet. Yes, yes, I know doughnuts are supposed to be delectable, sugary goodness, but their dough is SO good and its a waste to see it overpowered by heavy amounts of fillings and toppings. Their simpler donuts like the classic glazed, cruellers, and blueberry cake were all good. The dough is nice and soft and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Warning: Lines are LONG and its cash only! Be prepared to be told that the flavors you want are out of stock! My friends and I were smart enough to check their online menu in advance to write down all the flavors we wanted... but were so disappointed when we discovered they only had 3 flavors in stock out of the 7 or 8 we had written down. Not to mention we were sweating our butts off in line. For some reason they didn't have the AC on and all of the guests in line were fanning themselves miserably while waiting to order. 50+ Girls Trip Sept 2022. Trying to hit all the hotspots in a weekend. Stopped by VooDoo Donuts Sun afternoon. About 3 people in line. With no clue, I ordered their 'most popular'. When she set the Capt Crunch donut in the box I said, "oh I'm sorry- that one isn't us". She was disgusted and threw it in the trash. I felt awful. Had I realized, I would have kept it or paid for an extra or something. I was so bothered by the homeless situation in Austin and to have them throw away food that I hadn't touched broke my heart. I have heard of Voodoo Doughnuts and their almost cult following and had to try it out. The store was brightly lit and employees were friendly at about midnight on a Monday night. We waited in line and debated doughnut choices that were twirling in front of us in a spinning glass case. When we got to the front of the line they still had most of the doughnut choices and the girl at the register helped us with some recommendations. The doughnuts were so good! Very different and interesting, our favorites were the oreo & butterfiger topped and the hibiscus. They are a little pricier than others and some of the doughnuts we weren't as impressed with as we hoped. The décor was so cool here! Very bight and colorful with murals on one side and an American flag made up of basically sting lights on the other side. The inside was pretty clean and comfy. Downside was the bathroom. The code they gave me didn't work and thankfully a girl walking out held the door for me. The bathroom were so dirty, they were smelly and had toilet paper everywhere. Kind of reminds me of campus bar bathrooms on a busy Saturday night, just gross. read more
