The staff are great but the dirty chai latte was the most disgusting thing I've tasted - fake sugar and found out it was a concentrate. They don't even carry cinnamon or spices to try to make it feel more authentic. I got a descent cortado next time, but they short take the chai off the menu if it's as bad as their concentrate. read more

(3.5 stars) On paper, I should like Houndstooth far more than I actually did. It offers a clean, convenient location, courteous baristas, and fairly good coffee. I had a coffee julep (Americano with mint) during a recent visit, and it provided a welcome afternoon pick-me-up. True, it was overpriced, but the same can be said for much in Downtown Austin. Perhaps what puts me off Houndstooth is its lack of personality. This place didn't get the Keep Austin Weird memo. Honestly, the girls behind the coffee bar were kicking butt & taking names! They did such a great job of managing the Sunday rush, I really enjoyed watching them from the seats on the side of the bar. My fiancé and I got 2 iced vanilla oatmilk lattes and thoroughly enjoyed them. Very minimal flavors, so it makes me think that syrups are made in house. Overall, pretty disappointing for the Cold Brew. Service was good, standard coffee shop look and vibe. Ordered a large cold brew, and was dissapointed in the amount of water + ice added. It's a shame because the underlying flavor profile was good, but highly watered down on the concentrate. While I understand economic times could be tough, shafting your customer with an excessive amount of water without much concentrate would have to net a very rare, negative review IMO. Hope things get better, either training or management recognizes saving a few cents won't make for repeat customers. read more

After seeing the crazy amount of people at Desnudo, we decided to walk on over to a closeby Houndstooth. I was not expecting much, as they were located in a hotel/business building (?) tower. I think the gentleman making my coffee was having a bit of a rough time, because he seemed exasperated while taking the orders of the few people in front of us. I ordered a small vanilla latte, and it was on the heavily sweet side. I wanted to taste a bit more coffee in my latte, but I think it was heavily flavored with that vanilla syrup. Next time, I think I'd go with a plain latte. I wanted to take into account the rush and fatigue of the gentleman behind the bar, so I'm giving 4 stars, because I felt as though it was only fair. I got nervous because he didn't dial in the grind, but the new beans he added must have been from the same batch as the ones that had just run out. As a dine-in customer I appreciated the availability of ceramic cups (12 oz only). There was a small pastry collection by the register, and ready-made Tacodeli breakfast tacos to purchase too. The rush showed up around 10a on a Tuesday; before that was a lull in the line. This place was busy and bustling during the SXSW Film Festival, and I finally had a second between screenings to pop in for a coffee and a snack. I was happy with my experience here. The baked goods all looked so yummy, so I couldn't resist! I ordered a cappuccino and a scone from the busy and friendly employee behind the counter. The line was long and stretched back to almost the entrance, but it moved quickly and by the time I paid and moved down the line, my order was ready! Note that seating is tight here because it appears people like to come and camp out with their laptops and sit. And sit. And sit. It took me a while to find a stool for one, which was frustrating since I was just there to drink, snack and leave. It seems like a place that has regulars, which is always a good sign. My lemon poppyseed scone was fresh and delicious, with a burst of fresh and pungent lemon flavor! I loved it so much, and it was the perfect accompaniment to my creamy, rich cappuccino. I loved that my drink was served in a proper ceramic cup instead of the go-to paper cups that most coffee bars are leaning towards, and it was served at the correct temperature (not too hot and not lukewarm). Of course, you are paying for the quality, and this isn't a place for a cheap bargain! Love that it's open 7 days a week (but only until 5 pm on the weekend); weekdays you can get your caffeine fix until 7 pm! This coffee shop was near my hotel and open earlier than the surrounding shops. I had a house coffee. It was better the second day. I also had a bakery item, which was nothing special. You could order a breakfast burrito which appears to be from a close restaurant. And, there was a cooler with drinks and pre-packaged sandwiches. The vibe is industrial vibe (which I like) with concrete and wood. The seating area has good space with a variety of tables to work. There is an outdoor area. This must be a "get work done" place because the chairs are all stools. There isn't going to be any sleeping here. The counter staff was friendly. read more

The workers were friendly and it was pretty fast to get my order. The inside of the building was nice and there was lots of seating, so it would definitely be a great place to study. Unfortunately the coffee was pretty mediocre. The espresso tasted a little burnt. I could be wrong but it also came off as being more fruity. I prefer richer, chocolaty espresso; so maybe this just was not to my personal preference. Came here the day after X-Mas. Last visited: Dec' 23. After much deliberation, decided on the Vanilla Latte with a 1$ up charge for Oat Milk. The coat came to almost 8$ without tips, which in my case ended up as the same price with tips included. Latte was good and not hot enough. It was not piping hot. More like lukewarm. Not hot enough that you would stand a risk of burning your tongue. I wish it was a little hotter though. Taste was lackluster and somewhat underwhelming. Especially for the up-charge for oat milk. Cost was a little high for a single cup of latte. Not justifiable certainly due to bland taste. However will give it as a pass, plus as they were open on the 26th which most coffee shops aren't. All in all, passable place for coffee or latte. Good not great. Also slightly higher prices than expected. read more

Started my day with Houndstooth after leaving the airport. I was unfamiliar with this spot but I guess it's a pretty popular local chain around! While I enjoy coffee, I just enjoy matcha more. Definitely left a strong impression. Restroom and wifi are available. Matcha Latte - a classic matcha latte, nothing too crazy. Matcha was whisked well and led to a smooth taste which I appreciated. No clumps at all. Ice ratio felt a bit high at roughly half the cup, which would be a bigger issue if I had gone outside into the heat. Staying in however, the ice doesn't ruin the flavor. Building has a great vibe, and the outdoor seating under the cover of the building is fantastic- you can enjoy the open morning air rain or shine! Plenty of tables. Inside is cramped and on some days was busting at the seams with folks, so it is not a quiet place to work alone. Espresso has decent flavor, but is weak- if you're used to bold coffee get a quad for sure. Pastry options are sparse, and nothing special. Service depends on how busy the place is- chaotic and rushed during busy times, and a bit more relaxed when it's slow. read more
