First off, some background: I am (or was) a Video Only customer, having purchased a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD TV last year, and I am planning on buying a new 52"+ LCD or Plasma TV before the end of the month. We bought a house in July, and we have been slowly and meticulously building a home theater room over the last couple months. Today I went to the Video Only in Bellevue to review several models that I'd researched online, as we wanted to get my home theater up and operational before Thanksgiving, which we're hosting this year. We've been to this location a few times before, and having had good experiences, even referring some friends and associates to this store because of the excellent customer service we'd got back then. Well, I guess things have changed...
Today I perhaps experienced the worst customer service of my life there. The salesman that was helping us was a nice and helpful guy, if a bit inexperienced, but the store manager was very rude and disrespectful, which caught me completely off guard. After browsing the selection, we decided that a 52" HDTV was the optimal size, and were trying to decide whether we should purchase another LCD or to switch to a Plasma, but we were having some difficulty discerning some of the subtle differences between some of the similarly sized LCDs and Plamas. One model in particular - a 52" Mitsubishi - was playing a Blu Ray disc, and I noted that it was curious that only a few select models were connected to an HD source, and that I wished all of the displays were hooked up to the same HD source (as opposed to non-HD split coaxial), as that would allow us to observe some of the subtle differences between the models. This is particularly so as I have limited vision in one eye and the color contrasts (i.e, greens) can appear drastically different to me between models when coming from a true HD source. While we were sitting down talking between ourselves regarding the various 52" models in one of the areas, the store manager came up to us and very rudely implied that it seemed we weren't seriously looking to make a purchase and that we might as well leave his store. This came as a complete surprise to us, as we didn't understand what he was implying, and so I explained to him our corncern that we were having difficulty discerning some of the subtle differences between the models as we did not have the liberty of viewing them through an HD source. He apparently took offense to this and got very defensive, raising his voice and making insinuations that we were somehow trying to cause problems for him and his store, which we found very insulting and disrespectful. Perhaps it was because we looked quite young and were casually dressed, having come there directly after taking our dog to Marymoore dog park, but it was very obvious that he was profiling us as unlikely customers based on our physical appearance and our critique of the store's display practices. Regardless of how he tried to justify his actions, this was horribly disrespectful and rude, especially considering how respectful and helpful the staff at Magnolia Video was to us earlier today (it used to be the other way around). There was NO excuse for his behaviour. In addition, it was obvious the salesman seemed at odds towards his manager's behaviour, as we were planning to come back in the next couple weeks to make a purchase with him once we did a bit more research on the 4-5 models we were interested in, as he was pleasant and helpful.
Unfortunately, we will NOT be coming back, as the manager's rude and disrespectful attitude has persuaded us to take to take our business elsewhere. I am a person of principle and I am loyal to businesses that treat me well and appreciate my patronage. I thought Video Only was one such store, but it seems like I was rather mistaken as this establishment clearly did not have our best interests in mind. In these tough economic times, one would think that businesses such as these would focus on providing excellent customer service, but from today's experience we saw nothing but the opposite from the store management. So, if this lack of customer service is part of some new business model for this establishment, congratulations, it worked exceeding well, losing upwards of $2,500+ in revenue for November that will now go to one their competitors. read more
