1 star Very disappointing experience. The host was extremely unprofessional and arrogant, and the way he spoke to customers was completely unacceptable. He was actually yelling at customers, which made the whole experience very uncomfortable. The bar itself was also a huge disappointment. There were only a handful of games, maybe around seven, and most of them felt old and uninteresting. I expected much more from a place advertised as a retro arcade bar. On top of that, the atmosphere felt heavy and uncomfortable rather than fun and welcoming. Unfortunately, there was nothing about the experience that made me want to stay or come back. The place is split into 3 sections: traditional box arcade games, dining/bar/board games and more physical arcade games like basketball connect 4 and skeeball/ice ball (short ramp). Fun spot for a group! Came for a work holiday party. The staff were all very outgoing and definitely contributed to the atmosphere. There were tons of apps and hordeurves passed around (sliders, pizza, cheeseburger egg rolls, the usual), finishing with several different desserts (large brownies, butterscotch popcorn, cookies). I was looking for a decently sized bar near my office and ideally one that we haven't been to a million times already, and stumbled on Versus. What a fun place! A cross between a dive bar and an arcade (and to top it all off, the bartender was wearing this absolutely fantastic cat sweatshirt). It may be because we came on a Monday early evening but we were the only ones at the bar for a while, a nice change of pace from the usual downtown watering hole where you're just shouting in each other's faces the whole time. There's a $5 cover fee (cash, credit or Venmo) but it covers any and all the games and it's a flat rate for the whole evening (I also appreciate that, judging from reviews from a few years ago, they haven't raised that price). Drinks are all named from various games. The loaded tater tots and waffle fries were a crowd favorite. Truly a unique place. Small barcade, $5 for unlimited play and they are open late. They have pinball machines, driving simulation games, and several vintage games like Mrs. Pacman. Not a whole lot since the place is small, but enough to pass an hour. We came on a Thursday night and there was a Tekken tournament happening at the bar. We spoke to some of the organizers and players at the bar and were told walk-ins could play soon when the competition was over. Unfortunately, soon never came, between the winners league and the losers league playing each other. It would have been great to rotate a free play round for walk-ins after a few rounds. This is a great place to go and right in downtown. There's a $5 cover to get in. They have a variety of games from single player to multiplayer as well. The was very friendly at the bar helping to decide on drinks. For my drink I got the birdo bath and it was one of the most unique drinks I have gotten. Lots of games but also a good amount of ones that were out of service or were finicky and you could tell were old. Sticky surfaces and floors, there were also some board games/card games which we thought would be our saving grace but there were cards missing or mixed and matched with other games (and also sticky). I really wanted to like this spot, the vibe was very gamer friendly and I'm sure if you get there early enough, you could nab a table and maybe play Smash or Tekken at the bar, but I'm assuming any later than 7:30pm on a weekend would make it hard to really enjoy bc it's a small space and gets full quick. Didn't try the food but it smelled and looked pretty good. TBH, cleanliness should be the priority of the arcade they should focus on if they'd want people to not be scared off. read more

I came here on a Saturday night and the cover was just $5 per person. Seems like a great deal for unlimited games, especially compared to Roxy's in Cambridge. However, I will say, it was quite crowded and a bunch of machines were broken. I guess you get what you pay for. The bar was packed, with tons of people grabbing drinks. I ended up going elsewhere for a drink after, so we could find a spot to sit. If I came back again, I'd probably try for a weeknight. Manic owner who went out of line definitely seems air headed and loves to dominate customers without a conversation for something that he didn't agreed with. Brought a half drink beverage that obviously didn't cross my friend's mind that it would be a problem and we paid to go in and ordered food and was planning to get drinks. But this guy came up to us in a very aggressive way, saying slurs and touched him snatching the drink and bringing bouncers to kick him out. Never in my life seen a person try to act tough and tempered he could have asked you can't bring drinks in rather then make a scene and be touchy without. Honestly kind of a disappointing place. I went today and probably 1/4 of the machines were out of order. Far too many for a normal weekend day, and the selection of games was very limited. If games are out of order, they should be fixed asap. You cant tell me its normal to have several broken games without any urgency to fix. I dont see the same issues if i go to dave n busters. Tl;Dr - a cool spot for a night out with friends with great staff and fun games Ambiance - this is where this place shines. Really well decorated with large pop art pictures. Arcade games spread out through multiple rooms (pinball, Time Crisis, XMen, The Simpsons, Skeeball, Shuffleboard. The list goes on and on!) They open at 5p and I believe from 5-7 they are kid friendly, 7p on is 21+. (We got there at 6ish and there were only a few children. Def not overrun with kids) Service - they charge a $5 cover for every patron (I don't know about kids) and you get to play any game as many times as you want. Honestly a great deal? The front door guy was funny and personable. He made entering a new space feel like going over to a friends house. Food - we didn't primarily go for the food but did get some snacks. Fries and egg rolls were both cooked well and hot/crispy. The dishes other patrons had also looked well made. I took one star away as a good few of the ganes were broken/out of service. This didn't impact out evening but was bothersome when you play a game and it glitches, doesn't have necessary pieces (pinball without balls, shuffleboard missing pucks etc). That. Being. Said. I had never been to an arcade bar before, but my sister and her boyfriend were visiting Boston and they suggested we spend a night out here! Cover is $5 and you can play as many games as you'd like for as long as you want. We all shared a pitcher of Downeast and ordered dinner before we played anything. We were on our way to another bar next door when we came across this barcade. We called an audible and went to Versus instead of our original plan. When we got in we realized there was a cover. We were debating whether we wanted to still go in because we only planned to stay for a short amount of time. In that moment, they guy said, because you have an amazing beard, the three of you can go in for free. He made my night and I felt like a celebrity! He should have mentioned that the games are free and that's what you're paying for. The reason we were hesitant is that we thought there was a cover and then also pay to play. The games are pretty old so you may not recognise a bunch of them, but we had fun playing for a bit and having a couple drinks before heading out. Pretty reliable though I like it here. Bar tenders are nice just have a lot of people to get to. We absolutely love this place! We came here for an hour and a half before a dinner reservation and we're surprised to find it was five dollars for entry and unlimited gameplay. They even offer a free self coat check. It's not super big, there are two rooms with arcade games and the main bar was hosting a Mario kart tournament as well as some other video games. The games were pretty basic, several pinball machines, Pac-Man, Simpsons, Galaga, and your old style arcade games on one side and then Skee-Ball, air hockey and basketball connect 4 on the other side, which was more exciting for us. I tried a watermelon spicy margarita made with a ghost pepper tequila I knew and loved from home. It was delicious. After playing a few arcade games, we sat at the bar and play Yahtzee, They had a stack of board and card games available as well Although the place wasn't super elaborate or fancy, it offered a lot of fun for cheap on the drinks are good. Versus is a pretty neat spot to hang out with friends. I initially swung by with friends after dinner one night and wasn't thrilled about the idea of paying cover to go into a bar, but $5 cover to get unlimited games is a steal! For anyone who hasn't heard the concept, you pay $5 when you enter, but once you're inside, all of the arcade games are free! There are a good amount of pinball machines, classic arcade games, and newer carnival style games (skee ball, etc) inside, as well as a few stations to play modern video games too. At the bar they have a few consoles rigged up to play modern games and it's a nice mix up from the vintage machines whenever you can grab a seat. If you happen to nab a spot at the bar and start playing on one of the systems, you'll notice that it'll only be moments before someone comes up to ask "Can I get next?". The only downside of Versus is that the cocktails can get pretty expensive -- the cocktail I got was over $15... it was good but definitely pricey. Ultimately, I'd still recommend checking out Versus as a place to hang out with friends or bring a date! Just be prepared and know that this probably won't be the spot where y'all pick up the majority of the drinks for the night (unless you're high rollers lol). read more

Decided to spend my last night on a recent trip checking this place out near my hotel. I had visited a similar barcade in Philly that I was not impressed by, so I had a low bar of expectations. But I was pleasantly surprised by this place and wish I had something similar where I live. For a $5 cover charge, you get unlimited access to pinball machines, arcade games, and behind the bar they have TVs with consoles hooked up where people can play various games together (Smash Bros, Tekken, etc). They also have a good menu of drinks (I just downed a couple "Nuka Cola" drinks). I also got some wings as well which were good, not the best wings I've ever had but for a bar they were good. Versus is amazing! I've been there four or 5 times now and every time I go it just gets better. A perfect blend of 80's vintage arcade games (INCLUDING STAR CASTLE! This is a DEEP CUT legendary cabinet game that demonstrates their authenticity!) I also enjoy they mix it with modern games including 4 player TMNT, a good selection of pinball machines (including the new Foo Fighters one which is limited edition!). Great bar including these amazing Chartreuse jello shots, great selection of taps and they make one hell of a Manhattan (shout out to Ryan the bartender!) The menu is pretty typical bar food but actually great quality - the wings were certainly on point, good burgers, and the spiked shakes are great. The other thing that is overwhelmingly impressive is the staff. Everyone was courteous, extremely knowledgeable, and strived to ensure everyone had a good time. The manager Mike had to ask a customer to leave because he was a little over drunk but instead of being rude Mike asked this guy to think about what kind of customer he wants to be. Classy move. I'm from Denver, where the barcades are pretty much just coin-operated pinball machines and a pool table. So, when I came here, I was surprised to see not just one but quite a few TVs with different gaming consoles at the bar. And it's all included in your $5 unlimited play! My brother and I joined two other people and played the classics on the Nintendo Switch -- Mario Kart and Super Smash. It was such a fun time. There are three different "spaces" of games at this barcade. If you go farther into the barcade, you'll be in the space with skee ball, basketball, and multiplayer arcade games. The pinball machines I detest so much are on the other side of the barcade. (They did have a Time Crisis-type game on that side though, so I can't complain.) At first, I was a little worried about not getting to play much if people were going to be hogging the machines. However, everyone was super nice about it and let us have our turn. We got to play all of the games we wanted! I also gotta give major props for the decor and ambience here. Don't get me wrong -- it's still your typical rowdy bar with drinks left everywhere. $5 for unlimited game play! Can't beat that! Versus has a bunch of games and people are pretty good about taking turns. Faves are connect4 basketball, skeeball, shuffleboard, and Mario kart. A4cade requires coins for each game so it costs a lot more to play for a night, especially for several hours. Versus is cheap and if you come a bit earlier (5/6pm) it's not as busy. The food is not good but fine if you need a snack. Beers are around $7. Prices are a little high for what you get so I'd recommend stopping elsewhere for food! read more
