Cheese burger with hand cut fries and homemade ketchup
    Laura H.

One of the better burgers in the South End! Mine was perfectly cooked, served with hand cut fries and homemade ketchup - extra napkins are a must! Very friendly waitstaff. Lively crowd and colorful lights throughout make for a happy party vibe. I wasn't aware of the cash-only policy so had to use the in-house ATM, but at least the fee was low. I'd definitely go back with cash in hand.

Delux Cafe was an amazing experience. I came here on a Saturday evening around 8:30 for a romantic dinner. The greeter was affable and pretty consistently informed everyone that the restaurant is cash only. No surprises! Our server came around several times during the meal to refill our water and make sure we didn't need anything else to enhance our experience. And as for the food, I had the tomatoes with homemade ricotta for an appetizer. It was perfectly seasoned and prepared with some deliciously toasted nuts. The star of the night, though, was the grilled cheese. The jam inside perfectly complemented the savory notes of the cheese, and I was left wanting a second serving. I will definitely be coming back.

Absolutely delicious restaurant with a really fun vibe. Reminded me of a restaurant in Providence or Brooklyn. The grilled cheese was amazing. The guava jam tasted sweet and complimented the sourdough and cheese so well. Ordered the dirty bird and the vodka tasted a little off but got a bit better after a mix with the jalapeño. The service was great. A little slow but understandable since they were busy. The host at the front was incredibly outgoing and super kind!

Love the ambiance of this place. Nice decoration and comfort interior. Service was good and fast. Food was good overall, i had a burger/fries and i enjoyed the thick patty cooked to my liking-medium rare! However, the fries came with ketchup and i asked for a side of mayonnaise. I did not enjoy any of the sauce and even though they might be home-made, the strong vinegar/citrus taste was overpowering. Also, not a fan of Cash only!

Our friends were eager to take us to one of their favorite local dinner spots, Delux Cafe! It was easy to tell how much this cash only dive bar is loved by locals. We were enthralled by the bright lights and vintage records. Deluxe Cafe offered not-your-average bar food. From tacos to quesadillas, roasted chicken to salads, there is something on the menu for everyone. They also offered a unique cocktail and beer selection. The burger was awesome. Deluxe Cafe certainly left a mark on our weekend trip and we would love to be able to go back.

Kitschy hipster dive bar vibes - very popular spot in the downtown area that transported me back to Portland OR. Cash-only and very limited seating, only a few tables can seat more than 2. The door guy was friendly and the bartenders were quick. The space is very tight and if you're standing near the bar you're pretty much always in the way of the servers, but there's not much you can do about other than move when they need to pass. For drinks I started out with a Lamplighter IPA and then moved to some cocktails. I had the Nick and Nora, which was gin-based and citrus forward. It was refreshing, but small. I liked the La Bamba better, which was tequila-based and had a bit of spice from the ginger and black pepper and was balanced from the slight sweetness of the carrot. About 1.5 hours later they were able to seat our group of 4 for food. Chips and salsa are okay - the chips are lightly toasted tortillas cut into triangles and the salsa is a bit fruity. Most of us got the burger and one person got the half chicken. Burger was very thick and extremely mustard forward, which overpowered the shallots and other toppings. It was okay but I didn't finish it. I think they change out the condiments regularly cuz my friend said it was different last time. I really liked the thick fries with the crisped cheese and house made ketchup that came with the burger, but there weren't many of them. My friend loved the half chicken and the broccoli rabe. I'd return, but probably at an odd hour to avoid the long wait.

cash only but worth the trek to the atm due to the good atmosphere and fun vibe. it is a bar so it is expected to get a drink. the beach party was a yummy cucumber-pinapple-mezcal treat and the chips and salsa were not true chips but still yum nonetheless. grilled cheese was good. overall great vibes and quick service - need to come back!

When we checked in with the hostess and asked for bar seating, she said they have two reservations that requested bar seating and those seats are being held for them. I informed her we are probably one of those requests. She checked again and simply replied "we have a table for you". Ok, fine. When we get to the table, it is wobbling back and forth. The place was crazy busy and we didn't feel like flagging someone down to deal with it, so my wife and I just sat with our feet on the base the whole time and that held it steady enough. We then ordered a couple glasses of wine. They are NOT shy about the prices here. Each glass costs between $15-19, and the pours were small. We'd guess either 4 or 5 ounces. We ordered Foie Gras as an app. When it arrived, we asked for some bread to go with it. To our surprise, when the bill came, they charged us an extra $3 for the bread. When you order a $27 app, and two dinners each costng over $50, to add $3 for bread seems a bit petty. I ordered the skirt steak medium rare and it came out bloody rare. My wife ordered the scallops. They were served in a broth that was loaded with salt. Ruined the whole dish. All in with tax and tip, we dropped $250. For that price, this was a disappointment and we had wished we dined elsewhere.

Salty Pig Pizza: A pizza with the same name as the restaurant! Who was the genius who came up with the idea of salted pig and beer caramel? It's brilliant! The salted pork appears to include Prosciutto di Parma from Langirano, Prosciutto Cotto, and Salcissia. Baking rendered the prosciutto's fat, which blends with the caramel to create a beautiful golden syrup that flows across the pizza's surface. The prosciutto was savory, oily, and tender; the minced salcissia retains its coarse texture and rich meaty aroma; the caramel was sweet and mellow with a honey-like sweetness, forming the top, middle, and base notes respectively. The arugula was slightly warmed, losing its astringent and raw taste while maintaining its crisp texture, helped to cut through the richness together with the Parmesan cheese powder. The crust was crispy, while the inside the dough was soft and chewy. The cooking time and seasoning were all just right, and the restaurant's proud wooden oven added a charming smoky flavor. Affogato: I had high expectations, but it was just okay. The espresso was too sour, and the vanilla ice cream couldn't balance it out. The almond biscuits had an overpowering almond flavor, and the flavor of plant-based protein was terrible! (Oh, this should have been a plus...)

The linguine was on the smaller side portion-wise, but it came loaded with mussels and shrimp. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the sauce had a nice tangy, flavorful profile that really stood out. The Salsiccia pizza was good--plenty of toppings for its size and a well-balanced amount of cheese and sauce. What kept it from being great, if I'm being a bit hyper critical, was the crust. It leaned too doughy and lacked the crispness and airy texture you'd expect; the closest comparison I can think of is something like an Olive Garden breadstick. Service was okay--nothing particularly impressionable--but the ambience made up for it. The space felt warm, trendy, and like the perfect spot for a casual dinner. Overall, a solid spot with well-executed dishes, especially the pasta, and a pizza that's definitely enjoyable with just a small detail holding it back from the next level.

To start I had the tater tots. Pretty basic but it had a good seasoning to you! Not just salt and pepper! For the main dishes we had the Southern fried chicken sliders. It was a nice sweet and spicy blend. Not too spicy, just the right amount of kick to you! Also we got the chicken and waffles. As soon as we gave the menu back to them, not even 10 minutes later the food was at our spots. Piping hot and fresh. Mind you, the place was packed! So I'm not mad at that! The chicken thighs were seasoned well and juicy! The only thing I didn't like, was the waffle was kind of soggy and thin. Not like a Belgium waffle that is thick and crispy. But still, not bad. I would recommend trying them out but make reservations for a table.
